Chair's Report

Everyone knows rambling is not just for keeping fit but it is also an embedded part of our lives where we make lots of like minded friends, who we also socialise, experience funny walking experiences and have great fun with. Over the years we have sadly lost many rambling friends and I thought it would be nice to have a memorial walk on Saturday, 6 July around Hornchurch Country Park, when we can remember everyone we lost, so I would encourage everyone to put the date in your diaries. By the time you read this we will have had our March social at the Ardleigh in Hornchurch. The next social will be in September but also please put in your diaries the AGM and our Christmas dinner which has been booked for Tuesday, 10 December at the Cranleigh, Hornchurch.

We are on the threshold of Summer and looking forward to the sunshine on our faces as we ramble through the countryside and streets of London. The new programme starts with a wonderful New River walk, so don’t forget to put the sun cream on.

I will end with welcoming new members and as always saying a big thank you to all our walk leaders and committee who put a lot of work into keeping our group running. Happy rambling. Ellen Secretary’s Report Essex Area are keen that we maintain the state of our footpaths as much as possible. Having been informed of a problem on a path in the Noak Hill area, as well as the one on the London Loop, I wondered if there is anybody out there who could form another Working Party. Cutting back vegetation and reporting anything more serious to the Council would be a great help. Any committee member will give more details. Ken

Havering Footpath & Walking Environment Officer Vacant - can you fill this role?

Maintenance being done by our group in the past - more photos on our website.

Walks Secretary Gaps in the programme can be filled by emailing the details to: [email protected] If not filled, perhaps use the day to pre-walk a ramble for another time? Summer Evening Walks

These walks usually take place on Thursday evenings during the months of May – August. Each walk starts between 7 and 7.30pm and will be around 4-6 miles in length. These are very social walks with a chance to enjoy the long Summer evenings and maybe a beautiful sunset. A drink at a local pub afterwards is always a possibility if this is of interest. One is already planned for June, please check for further dates nearer the time. Marion N.B. Advance Notices of dates for your diary are at end of the July walks. Information and Web Master We all like to save, and we are all aware of the cost of things, not just financial, but also environmental. A few years ago we launched our ‘green initiative’. The aim being to reduce the impact that paper programmes have on resources by using electronic versions. If you are reading this on your PC or Mobile device, do you need a paper copy? If the ‘electronic’ programme meets your needs, do you need the printed version? Many of our members have opted not to have a paper copy. Could you join them? Just drop me an e-mail saying you no longer require a printed copy and you will make a difference. Peter

Dogs on Walks

Walks: Information for Walk Leaders and All Ramblers Check our website (see page 1) for up-to-date walk information. Check the web calendar, found under 'Our Walks' on our website,

to see what days are available when booking a day to lead a walk. Walk Leader's Checklist leaflets are available from the Walks

Secretary. Remember to tell the Walks Secretary when submitting your walk if you don't want it to go on Walkfinder (no reason is needed, it's your choice). Information to help you decide whether you would like your walk included or excluded from Walkfinder entries on Ramblers.org.uk. As a general rule, London walks are added as Members Only (to

keep numbers to a manageable level), with country walks going Public (unlikely to get too many walkers to be a problem).

When we meet somewhere for forward travel (by car or train for example), these also don't get added (we can't give an accurate walk start time).

No walk leader names or phone numbers are added on Walkfinder, instead we use the group name / email / mobile (see page 1) for the contact options.

To comply with the Disability Equality Act (2010), we must allow registered assistance dogs to participate with their owners e.g. guide, hearing, service, therapy and seizure alert dogs. We will continue to let Walks Leaders decide whether to allow non-assistance dogs to participate in their walks.

Car Share Please car share where possible, as parking is often quite limited. Walking with the Ramblers All sporting activities have inherent hazards associated with them, and rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the paramount concern, accidents will occasionally occur. It is therefore important that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity, and take all reasonable steps to eliminate or minimize the potential for an accident to occur. The Ramblers Association is a company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales. Company registration number 445892. Registered charity in England and Wales Number 1093577. Registered office, 2 Floor, Camelford House, 87-90 Albert Embankment London SE1 7TW. Incident Report Forms Good forward planning helps to reduce the likelihood of a reportable incident happening. Walk leaders are provided with an Incident Report Form (spare forms are available from the Walks Secretary). The form has sections on When and How to fill in the form, and other guidance to assist.

Visit the TFL web site (tfl.gov.uk) to check your route and the availability of public transport before travelling, especially at weekends, to allow for the planning of alternative routes.

The Havering and East London Ramblers group has joined The Walking Partnership. This partnership, supported by Ramblers Walking Holidays, provides direct financial contributions to local walking groups to help with organising group walks, encouraging people to get out walking, helping to clear and improve footpaths, providing equipment to help walkers etc. Over the past 65 years, Ramblers Walking Holidays has given many millions of pounds to assist walking charities and conservation projects in Britain and the countries they visit on their worldwide holidays. Now our group can benefit directly. Ramblers Walking Holidays operate group walking holidays in the UK and all around the world. Each holiday is accompanied by a qualified walks leader, so you can leave all the organising to them and just enjoy meeting like-minded people and of course, some fantastic walking. Holidays are graded in terms of difficulty, and there is a full range from sightseeing right up to hut-to-hut mountain treks. Take a look at their website on www.ramblersholidays.co.uk or give them a call on 01707 33113 for more details or to order a brochure. Remember when you book to quote the name of our group, and we will then receive a contribution of £10 per person on UK holidays, £20 per person on short haul holidays, and £30 per person on long haul holidays. This extra funding could really make a difference to us.
