Christmas is coming! For many people, sending and receiving Christmas cards heralds the start of the festive season and helps to stave off winter blues with steady reminders that
family and friends are thinking of each other during the cold, dark weeks ahead. Sending a charity Christmas card not only helps brighten someone's day but also helps support one of the many brilliant organisations
working tirelessly to improve lives across the UK. ‘Cards for Good Causes’ helps over 250 charities by selling their cards in 300 popup shops across the country. It offers an unrivalled selection of charity Christmas cards, wrapping and stocking fillers and promise
to return at least 70p in every £1 to the individual charity you have chosen to support. Buying from Cards for Good Causes is a great choice for both you and your chosen charity. You can see a selection at Central Methodist Church
Launceston from 1st November to 8th December. 10am - 4pm Monday to Friday 10am - to 1pm Saturdays Lavinia Archer
Love in a Box
There is still time to make up a shoe box for this year's Love in
a Box appeal. (Please see last month's diary for all details or
give me a ring) They are being collected on 12th November,
so if you could get them to me by Saturday 10th November,
then I can deliver them to the collection point in Altarnun.
Make a child happy this Christmas.
Ring on 01566 775676 or 07867 905645 or email [email protected]. If
you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Many thanks! Janet Wild.

Front cover: A picture of a bloomery furnace. Fuelled with charcoal and using local iron ore, it is kept burning at a high temperature by the use of bellows; the ’bloom’ it produces is a messy lump of iron and slag which has to be further refined by heating in a hearth with more charcoal and bellows again. The end product is wrought iron which can be made into things like spears, ploughshares and the like. This method of making iron came from the Roman world almost 2000 years ago.
Finding one of these furnaces at the bottom of a post hole being dug in our garden was what last month’s cover was about… Fe is the symbol for iron — like the iron used by the smiths of Trekenner Shop. Irene Woods had a very close guess as to what it was about, suggesting the phrase ’strike while the iron is hot’ - a phrase with real meaning in the art of smithing. Andrew Hudson realised that the other element symbols related to metals which had been mined in the Parish or could be found as placer deposits in the rivers. There is the earthwork of a Romano-British settlement only 350 yards from the furnace, so who knows…? Currently waiting for an archaeologist to take a look at it!
Editorial
As I write this, we seem to experiencing something of an ‘Indian Summer’ which is great if you want to get those last minute jobs in the garden completed. Or should I say ‘in the waspo-hornetarium’? Three hornets drinking the sap seeping from a shrub I was attempting to trim became quite anxious about the movement of the pruning-saw inches from their perch. Not as anxious as me when they started circling my head, I have to admit. I let them be… they were European hornets judging by their yellow thoraxes, and despite their fearsome reputation they do a lot of good in the garden. A couple of months ago I watched them predating on the wasps which were in their turn predating on aphids. Everything has its place in nature.
Spot the shield bug in my photo of the hornet. Must have been a confident one… Rob.

TREBULLETT METHODIST CHURCH (contribution by Jill Price)
Our month began with our Harvest Festival on 7th October when we
welcomed Revd Roger Greene to lead our morning service. The chapel
had been beautifully decorated by the ladies and there was a good
attendance at the service which was enjoyed by all. Following the service, we served a hot lunch in the hall of various casseroles followed
by the usual delicious sweets. Over 40 came to the service and lunch,
some being new to our events and a special welcome to them. We hope
that they come again. Donations given at the lunch were for Farming
Community Network in Cornwall and the non perishable goods donated
were passed to Launceston Foodbank. We are beginning to plan our Christmas events. Our annual meal and
entertainment will be on the evening of Saturday 24th November – this
is always an evening of fun and laughter as well as a delicious supper so
mark the date in your diary. Tickets will be available from members at
the beginning of next month. (Advert below) Our Carol Service and Nativity will be on the evening of Sunday 23rd
December and all are very welcome. This is usually followed by tea and,
weather permitting, carol singing around the village.
Please do join us for these events, all are very welcome.

LUNCH CLUB REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER Beetle Drive! Lezant Lunch Club met on Wednesday 26th September at Trebullett Hall. Everyone was welcomed by Veryan Milne-Home who announced that sadly, this would be her last Lunch Club meeting, as she would be moving away with her husband to be nearer to their family. Veryan has been involved in the lunch Club since its inception in 2002 with Val Bugden Causey. Veryan read out the advertisement which Val had written at that time ending with “that she was sure that the meals would be excellent and very enjoyable!” So they have proved to be. Ruth Burden told the diners that at their age they knew everything, now all they had to do was to remember it. And so the meal began. Our gentlemen cooks, Gary and Dave, had produced an excellent dinner of roast loin of pork and gravy with a sage toad-in-the-hole and apple sauce. As side dishes, roast potatoes, parsnip, potato and apple mash, carrots, French beans, braised red cabbage with red wine and sultanas were served. For dessert there were homemade individual fruit trifles. Then followed a hilarious game of Beetle Drive organized by Christine Stone, with Michael Prettejohn as Master of Ceremonies. Many players were unsure of the rules and some made up their own. After quite a noisy exchange, prizes were awarded to Beryl Knight, Mary Lambert-Boyton and Barry Higgins. A vote of thanks was given and the diners responded in the usual way. Anyone who would like to join the Lezant Lunch Club please telephone Ruth on 01566 782286 or Audrey on 01566 773062 for more details and to reserve a place. Joy Holter.

have a form that he will complete. You sign the form and pay the reduced rate to the driver. Please note
that the single fares quoted below are for guidance only, if you live outside one of the villages the fare
may differ slightly:

Become a governor? About two years ago (almost to the day) I saw an advert in the
Lezant Parish Magazine for Governor vacancies at Trekenner Primary School so I decided
to volunteer. This has been a fantastic decision: volunteering as a governor (and now
chair) has made a difference to me personally.
The impacts on me have been that I now feel socially connected to the community in a
way that I wouldn’t have otherwise done; I have made some great friends among the
other governors and I take personal satisfaction knowing that I am contributing to the
school’s success. In addition it’s allowed me to use my work acquired skills and that
means that I feel better about myself overall. As the saying goes, ‘doing good, does you
good.’
Being a governor sounds like a massive commitment but it’s not as onerous as people
imagine. At Trekenner we have 6 meetings a year plus occasional visits to see the
school in action. And you will receive training and support too, which means that anyone
can contribute. The truth is anyone can be a governor: professional or student (18+),
retiree or young mum and those in between!
I am particularly keen to hear from people who could contribute to legal, finance, health
and safety (buildings), communications, H.R. or education (if you’ve ever been to a
school, that’s you.) Please contact [email protected] (Chair of Governors at
Trekenner Primary School) or school Secretary Julie or Delyth on
[email protected] or ring 01579 370435.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING TRIP TO TRURO FRIDAY 30
TH NOVEMBER 2018
Arrangements for our Christmas Shopping Trip to Truro this year are well under way. There are just 5 seats still available on the coach so why not join us for the day?
The date is Friday 30th November, with the coach leaving Lezant, Trebullett and Treburley at about 10am. We will stop at Launceston or Plusha to pick up anyone who needs that stop and arrive in Truro at about 11am. We will leave at 4pm (which will give plenty of time for shopping and/or visiting the Cathedral , Museum etc) and, depending on traffic on the A30, arrive home about 5pm or just after.
Hopefully the coach will be full so the cost per person will be £10 but may be slightly more if there are vacant seats. If the booked coach fills and there are more people wanting to come, then I can book a bigger coach! Please bring your family and friends. Please let me know if you would like to come along calll me on 01579 370835 or email me on [email protected].
Remembering loved ones at Christmas with Cornwall Hospice Care
Cornwall Hospice Care’s Christmas remembrance event; Light up a Life returns again this year with
seven services across the county. Light up a Life offers people the chance to remember their loved ones
at what can be a very busy and sometimes lonely time of year.
At the heart of the events are our beautiful Books of Remembrance. Each venue has its own book and there is a special service at all the locations, which are open to everyone. The pages are also available
to view on our website from November. If you would like to take part in Light up a Life, to remember
someone special, forms can be found in all our hospice shops and at both hospices, alternatively go to
our website www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk and Light up a Life can be found within the ‘Support Us’
section.
