Section 1 Comprehension I (13 marks)
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions in complete sentence.
Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber has skyrocketed ((如火箭般)急劇上升) to fame over the last 4 years and is now
one of the most popular young singers in the world. Bieber is an example of a new and modern
type of pop star; he was discovered by a producer (製作人) through his videos on YouTube – an
avenue (途徑; 大道) not available to singers from previous generations (年代).
Although many people assume (假設) Bieber is from the USA, he is in fact Canadian. He was
born in 1994 into a single parent family and was raised by his mother Patricia, who was just 17
when Justin was born. She has frequently stated in interviews that she worked hard in
low-paying jobs when Justin was a child to support him. At school, Justin threw himself into the
same activities that his friends enjoyed, including hockey ( 曲 棍 球 ) and football. He kept his
musical aspirations (抱負) to himself for some time and taught himself to play the piano, drums,
guitar and trumpet (喇叭). It wasn’t until 2006 that he decided to try singing in public at a talent
show (達人秀). He was awarded second place and his mother uploaded a video of his
performance onto YouTube.
It was purely (純粹地) by chance that Bieber gained the international recognition (認識) he now
enjoys; in 2008, a record producer from the USA clicked on one of his videos accidentally while
searching for another singer. He was so profoundly (深刻地) impressed (留下印象) that he
contacted Bieber’s mother to ask if he would come to his studio and record a demo (錄音樣帶)
tape. He was soon signed to a record label and his first single achieved (達到) platinum status
(白金地位).

attracted criticism (評論). At a concert in London in March 2012, he didn’t appear on stage (舞
臺 ) until 10pm, which provoked ( 激 怒 ) anger from the audience and later from the media,
