PART B
For questions 2–9, choose ONE question and write about 400 words in the space provided on pages 8–12.
Indicate which question you are going to attempt in the question number box on page 8.
2. Learning English through Sports Communication
You are a regular contributor to the school magazine. The editor has asked you to interview a local
sports celebrity for the next edition, which will be published before the Swimming Gala. You have
decided to approach a popular local swimmer who represented Hong Kong at the Olympics.
Write a letter to this sports celebrity asking if you could arrange an interview and explaining why
this article would be beneficial to students at your school.
3. Learning English through Workplace Communication
You work for a telecommunications company. Your boss has asked you to write a report about the
pros and cons of an open-plan office.
Write your report giving reasons for and against implementing this layout plan in the office.
4. Learning English through Social Issues
The government is planning to organize a publicity campaign that features a series of print
advertisements and television commercials to better educate the public on three environmental
issues. It is inviting the public to make suggestions on what issues to be highlighted.
Write a letter offering your three suggestions and explaining why these issues should be highlighted.
5. Learning English through Debating
Your principal has announced that the school will be introducing a brand new uniform in the coming
academic year. As a student leader, you have been approached by a number of your schoolmates
who are unhappy with this decision.
Write an email to your principal arguing against this decision and giving reasons why the school
should reconsider changing the uniform.

6. Learning English through Popular Culture
You were visiting your grandparents at the weekend and had a long conversation with them about
their teenage years.
Write an essay discussing three ways in which your grandparents’ teenage life was different from
yours today.
7. Learning English through Drama
You recently watched a play with an all-male cast despite there being a number of female roles in the
story. As you were leaving, a group of women were protesting outside the theatre, saying it was
unacceptable that no female actors were cast.
Write a diary entry about this experience and whether you agree with those women.
8. Learning English through Poems and Songs
You have recently joined an online interest group for music lovers. Not only has this introduced you
to music from different countries and cultures, it has also given you the opportunity to learn more
about music and chat with other members.
Write a blog post about the online group and why you are pleased you joined.
9. Learning English through Short Stories
As chairperson of the school Book Club, you want to encourage fellow students to read more. You
would like to propose that the school library create a website where students can borrow e-books for
free. They will be able to download e-books onto their devices or read them on the website.
Write a proposal to the principal making this suggestion. Give reasons why students would be
attracted to this scheme and explain how it would benefit them and the school.
