Letter from the Executive Director
Thank you for another great year filled with awards, great arts and
science, and most importantly— reaccreditation with the
American Alliance of Museums. The Board of Trustees, staff, Mayor and
City Council, members, sponsors, and visitors all contributed to this
distinction. The site visitors were impressed by the passion that everyone
feels for the Center.
We began the year with a ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion when we
received the Governor’s Arts Award for Art Education. We next earned
the Arkansas Museums Association’s award for conservation of artworks
from the African American art aspect of the Permanent Collection and
we won the Pine Bluff Chamber of Commerce’s Non-Profit Business of
the Year.
As we approach fifty years, in 2018, we are stronger than ever and owe a
debt of gratitude to those who made us an institution for arts AND
science. They could not have foreseen the juicy intersection between
arts, engineering, and technology that ignites interest in young people
and keeps ASC relevant in today’s whirl of coding, Arduino,
Makey Makey, Scratch, Alice, and the myriad other programs, gizmos,
and gadgets that we offer.
Your participation and financial support provide a solid foundation and
we especially appreciate those who have
included ASC in their estate planning. Your
financial support, especially larger gifts to the
Endowment, will keep The Arts & Science Center
as one of Arkansas’ premier educational and
cultural institutions.
Thank you for your years of dedication to the
Arts & Science Center and know that we are
financially stable, devoted to serving this community, and we see
a bright future— thanks to you.
See you at the Center,
Lenore

Support for the Arts & Science Center for
Southeast Arkansas is provided, in part, by
the Arkansas Arts Council,
an agency of the
Department of Arkansas
Heritage and the National
Endowment for the Arts.
Letter from the 2016 Chairman of the Board of Trustees
Bravo! Encore! 2016 was a great year for the
Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas.
Highlighted by prestigious awards, reaccreditation,
impressive performing arts, astonishing exhibits,
and a very successful Potpourri, Dr. Lenore Shoults,
the ASC Staff, and many volunteers put in countless
hours making the Arts Center something in which
Southeast Arkansas should be proud of.
Always keeping the mission in mind– serving as a
cultural crossroad: engaging, educating, and
entertaining through the arts and sciences– ASC
has excelled with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math)
programming. ASC has collaborated with local schools and children’s
programs to offer awesome experiences to our local youth. These
experiences, however, are not simply to provide entertainment, but to also
serve as a foundation for employability skills in the ever changing,
STEAM-driven workplace.
As industry-related organizations have recognized, the work being done by
ASC is nothing short of phenomenal. With Dr. Shoults’ leadership, the ASC
Staff’s passion, a dedicated board of trustees, and the overwhelming
community support, The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas will
continue to thrive.
It has been an honor to serve as your chairman in 2016.
Nick Makris
