PROGR AM COMMITTEE UPDATE

Sean P. Cleary MD, MSc, MPH 2020 Program Chair

Congratulations and thank you to Dr. David Kooby, the 2019 AHPBA Program Chair, who suitably helped us celebrate 25 years of AHPBA with record breaking attendance with over 1,000 meeting attendees from 45 countries and 6 continents, and 361 scientific abstract submissions.

The AHPBA 2020 Annual Meeting promises to deliver breakthrough scientific content from experts around the world, and is themed “2020 Vision – Focus on Evidence and Integrated Care.”

The 2020 meeting will include the Pre Congress Symposium planned by AHPBA President Elect Dr. Timothy Pawlik, “State of the Art” lectures and named lectures including Professor Norihiro Kokudo (Japan) and Professor John Neoptolemos (England/Germany), new “How I Do It” sessions and more!

We will also continue collaborations with ASTS (American Society of Transplant Surgeons), ILLS (International Laparoscopic Liver Society), SAGES (Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons), and CCF (Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation) with co-sponsored symposia, and will continue the successful partnering with HPB Advocacy groups with the second year of the Advocacy Corner. Various other groups will have the opportunity to meet and discuss key issues pertaining to them such as Advanced Practice Providers, Women in HPB Surgery and expanded programming for Community Surgeons, as well as an AHPBA favorite – Fellows Jeopardy! In addition, you won’t want to miss two exciting video sessions – Masters Disasters and Masters Videos.

Finally, the program would not be complete without the AHPBF 5K Fund Run and our famous Congress Banquet, giving us a chance to kick back, relax and enjoy food, cocktails and entertainment with friends and family.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel March 5-8, 2020 to fulfill our mission ofAdvancing HPB care to improve patient lives.

“The AHPBA Research Grant helped enable me to spend dedicated time during residency doing basic science research, and to join an international community of clinicians and researchers devoted to treating HPB disease. This unique opportunity is invaluable to me at this point, early in a career that I hope to build as a surgeon-scientist.” – Dr. Joshua Leinwand

2019 Research Grant Recipient

“The AHPBA Traveling Award afforded me a great opportunity to witness some of the best master-surgeons at work, and I’ve gotten to know and became friends with a great number of people.  The experience has galvanized my resolve to become a stronger advocate for my patients, many of whom have limited means.”   – Dr. Quyen Chu

2015 Travel Grant recipient

“I very much enjoyed the whole meeting. I really liked the presidential speech ‘Get Better’ by Dr. Vollmer and the symposia such as the one regarding biliary duct injury. I think the greatest benefits of my attending the meeting was, first, the update on the current management of HPB diseases and, secondly, the possibility to get together and spend some time with the experts in this specialty and experience the camaraderie of the AHPBA members.” – Dr. Rodrigo Figueroa

2019 Travel Grant recipient

“Funding challenges and shifting priorities have curtailed the entry of young surgeons into careers incorporating basic science and laboratory work. This is unfortunate, as surgeons have the unique privilege of seeing, treating, and studying the diseases they specialize in. The field of pancreas cancer, my area of interest, has seen a remarkable increase in the number of researchers studying the disease; however, this also means that the competition for limited funding has also grown. The AHPBA 2019 Training Grant helped to fund another year in the lab to delve into the mechanistic features of how diabetes affects the initiation and progression of pancreas cancer in patients. The generous funding provided allowed me to establish myself as a more independent trainee capable of building my own surgeon-scientist research group in the future.” – Dr. Lawrence Delrosario

InstitutoGuatemalteco de Seguridad Social led by Dr. LeonardoDouglas and David Porras.Hospital Privado Nuestra Señora del Pilar led by Dr. ErickSoto and Dr. Estuardo Paiz.

3. Biliary drainages were carried out with local surgeons andradiologists and a Duodenopancreatectomy was plannedbut it was finally cancelled due to logistical problems. Also, a hands on course on ablation therapies (RFA andMWA) was organized by the Chapter where surgeonswere able to practice these techniques.

The mission was very successful in supporting the local Chapter and integrating it with the general surgeons community. It was also very useful for young surgeons to be in contact with modern surgical procedures and techniques.

Honduras Outreach | Makati Medical CenterOctober 2018

Our team comprised of Dr. Quyen Chu, Dr. Awe, Ms. Christen Lummus and me representing AHPBA in collaboration with World Surgical Foundation. In brief, our team arrived in Honduras on October 6th. On Sunday, October 7th we screened more than 200 patients and scheduled surgeries for the coming week. Our team comprised of 24 members: 3 general surgeons, 1 pediatric surgeon, 1 oncologist gynecologist, 1 hand surgeon together with 3 residents (1 from Japan, 1 from LSU and 1 from Philadelphia) We had 5 anesthesiologists & 5 CRNA’s and we also had social workers, ICU nurses & ancillary staff. We ended up doing 147 surgeries during this week comprising gynecology surgery, urology surgery, general surgery, pediatric surgery & hand surgeries. While there, medical students were great help, they were involved from the very first day translating and documenting in the charts. Later, they accompanied patients to the operating room and acted as the translator between surgeons and personnel, they made rounds with us every day consistently. We taught them how to put sutures in patients & minor part of surgery and they were extremely happy with this experience.

This was a wonderful and gratifying mission, and everyone came back happy and looking forward to the next.

AHPBA & CB-CHPB Mission Trip | Imperatriz/Maranhão, BrazilAugust 2019

Our mission trip took place on August 15-17th in the city of Imperatriz, in the State of Maranhão, Brazil. The trip was held at the public hospital run by the state government, known as Dra. Ruth Noleto Macrorregional Hospital. Five surgeons, Dr. Mariano Gímenez (from Buenos Aires and Strasbourg), Dr. Alessandro Diniz, Dr. Heber Salvador (both from São Paulo), Dr. Orlando Torres (from São Luís), and Dr. Eduardo Fernandes (from Rio de Janeiro), kindly donated their time and talent to come and perform surgeries at the mission trip.

In the days before the humanitarian mission, AHPBA made the local news with radio and television interviews which gained visibility for the outreach mission as well as AHPBA. On the first day, a clinical session was held with discussion of the cases that were selected for the following day. The visiting surgeons, local surgical team, radiologist and senior students from the Medical School of the Federal University of Maranhão collaborated. On the second day, 11 HPB surgeries were performed. We had three operating rooms available for us at the hospital and the surgeries were performed by the invited surgeons with the participation of the local surgical team. The teams shared experiences for the purpose of improved surgical skills. On the third day, a half-day mini-meeting was held which included participation from other general surgeons in the community, as well as several medical students.

It is also important to highlight the collaboration of private entities for the accomplishment of the Outreach Mission. Ethicon Johnson & Johnson donated surgical supplies, SAFE and Cirúrgica Fontelles (local dealerships) donated supplies for invasive hemodynamic monitoring, and the C-Arm radioscopy was kindly loaned by the Hospital das Clínicas de Imperatriz, another private hospital at the same town.

CHAPTER SUPPORT AND OUTREACH

Drs. Jorge Lyra, Heber Ribeiro, Alessandro Diniz, Orlando Torres, Eduardo, Fernandes, and Mariano Gimenez led the team alongside a local multidisciplinary team.

The Outreach Mission was succcessful. It helped arouse health managers to the importance of having a specialized treatment team, as demonstrated by the patient demand. Additionally, we were able to convince the health managers to buy a C-arm radioscopy for the hospital. The trip also provided an atmosphere for the exchange of knowledge. We performed several surgeries which was much needed since there were some patients who were waiting for surgery for over one year. And last but not least, we promoted the AHPBA brand among local surgeons who were unfamiliar with our association.

We at Imperatriz give our most sincere thanks to AHPBA, as well as CBCHPB, and the invited surgeons, who gave their time and expertise to such a worthy cause.

Kind Regards,Jorge S. Lyra MD

AHPBA & CB-CHPB Mission Trip | Mato Grosso, BrazilDecember 2018

Dear colleagues,

It’s my privilege to report the successful outcome of our first Brazilian AHPBA’s Outreach Mission (December 13th - 14th, 2018).  The Brazilian College of Hepato Pancreato Biliary Surgery (CB-CHPB) merged with AHPBA fully supported the mission and helped the HPB team from the city of Cuiabá, in the state of Mato Grosso / Brazil to receive our team of surgeons. It was locally coordinated by Dr. Michelli Daltro.

The main goal was to help promoting local progress of dedicated HPB surgical care to local patients in need.

Those patients were operated on at the Hospital Geral de Cuiabá, and the surgical teams included local surgeons and residents. Operative procedures included HCC radio frequency ablation, giant hepatic cyst resection, lap cholecystectomy, percutaneous biliary drainage and iatrogenic biliary injury repair. All cases were discussed in detail on the second day, during an HPB Symposium. Also, our surgeons provided small conferences regarding HPB topics and had a very nice chat with the attending surgeons, residents and students. Fortunately, all patients did well after surgery and all participants interacted in a very friendly atmosphere. Local hospital and surgical teams could improve their skills regarding treating complex HPB diseases. AHPBA and CB-CHPB will continue to support these and other dedicated HPB teams. We thank Dr. Felipe Coimbra for the initiative to start these mission efforts in Brazil. We also want to highlight the local leadership of Dr. Michelli Daltro’s and give thanks for the very kind hospitality.

Philippines Outreach | Makati Medical CenterFebruary 2019

Dear Colleagues,

I am very happy to report our fact-finding mission to Manila, Philippines was very productive. They were great hosts and went out of their ways to make sure everything went well. Our colleagues from the Philippines are very interested in establishing a Liver Transplant Program and I gave the following lectures; ”Establishing a Liver Transplant Program: The Essentials”, “Pancreatic Resection in the Era of Minimal Invasive Surgery” and “Update in Liver Transplantation”.

During our stay we visited all major institutions in Manilla. Also, we visited with the Philippines Undersecretary of health and who oversees Transplantation and Organ Recovery.

In summary, there is significant surgical talent and potential in Philippines. I believe that with adequate support, we can help the people of Philippines to become independent in area of HPB and Transplantation Surgery.
