  • Verbs in the lyrics :

------------------------------- This is a board game to practice the past tense of the different verbs used in the lyrics. You move around the board according to the number you get on the dice. The number of the dice will also tell you the person you need to conjugate the verbs with. Example: (I get 6 on the dice. So I make a sentence using (holding & You): Couples holding hands/ then I get 5 on the dice So I make a sentence using (sealed & They): I signed my letter that I sealed with a kiss.

  • ------------------------------- Teachers Notes :

You can use this board with different verbs and nouns as you need for your different classes and with different songs, it can be applied for adjectives prepositions or whatever you want the students to practice.

To modify the board Xerox and cut up then write a document with the words you need to practice with font Ravie (size 16). You can also put white dough, and write with your own hand the new words.

The purpose of the activity is to put these words in context . Students can practice one specific tense or all the ones they already know. In this chart the verbs are written as they appear on the lyrics.

So some are in past, others in gerund, or base form.

------------------------------- The sentences may vary but these are some examples of what the students can say depending on your instructions

If the student gets one on the dice at the start point he/she has to make a sentence with come and I: Please make my wish come true / Santa will make my wish come true / Santa didnt come . (depending on the tense you want them to practice of the tenses they already know). If the student gets two after the previous point he/she has to use you and sleep: I just cant sleep/ I wont be able to sleep/ can you sleep? (as you can see students will have to make sentences that make sense with the words they are using ). If the student gets three after sleep he/she has to use holding and he/she or it/: couples holding hands / Were you holding hands? / Santa will be holding everyones presents ( you can also ask them to use affirmative or interrogative for that you can add on the chart cards with (+ for affirmative) (- for negative) and (? for interrogative)

  • 12. You dont need to be alone on Christmas NSYNC

I don't know when we fell apart The love that we had was like a work of art I used to see Heaven in your eyes The angels have fallen from your skies Things we said were so wrong And I haven't held you for so long My foolish pride turns me inside Why did we tell all those lies? You can reach for the phone You don't have to be alone Outside the winter seems so cold Your heart is frozen like the snow And there's no one home to keep you safe and warm Your eyes are red because you've cried You fell asleep by the fireside But there's one thing you should know On this Christmas baby You don't have to be alone And I had only one wish on my list, oh For me you would be the perfect gift, oh yeah There's nothing colder than an empty home, oh no (empty home) And holidays were never meant to be alone, oh (to be alone) The smiles we gave when our hearts were safe By each other's love and warmth That's subsided now with happiness around If I can only find the way to your heart

Outside the winter seems so cold (so cold, so cold) Your heart is frozen like the snow (frozen like the snow, oh so cold) And there's no one home to keep you safe and warm (no one home, keep you safe and warm yeah) Your eyes are red because you've cried (you've cried) You fell asleep by the fireside (by the fireside) But there's one thing you should know (one thing you should know) On this Christmas baby You don't have to be aloneyeah, uh You don't (no, no) have to be alone You don't have to be (no, no) all alone at home Ohhhh on Christmas You don't (you don't) have to be alone You don't have to be(alone) alone You don't have to be alone Outside the winter seems so cold (so cold, sing it baby) Your heart is frozen like a storm (frozen like a storm yeah like a storm) And there's no one home (no one home) to keep you safe and warm (to keep you safe and warm) You don't have to be alone Your eyes are red because you've cried (you've cried) You fell asleep by the fireside (by the fireside) But there's one thing you should know (one thing you should know) On this Christmas baby, you don't have to be. Alone. Yeah

  • Answers may vary just make sure students use properly need to/ have to and should.

    Follow up activity :

------------------------------- This song can be perfect for conversation. Students can practice modals in general and family issues. Students can also practice expressions like : I agree/ to my mind/ I dont think so/ so do I/ I dont either/ I do too/ neither do I. You can play a Christmas movie for the students to get the feeling of Christmas and family, and see how family conflicts are a shadow for happiness in Christmas.

    -------------------------------

    Pedagogic Notes :

------------------------------- Students get the input through the song. They get a situation, some vocabulary and grammar. Make sure they understand the lyrics. You can get the class in teams to do reading comprehension and get the main idea of the lyrics. You can ask some comprehension questions to check students understanding. If they dont understand important facts then get them work in groups with the dictionary to get the main ideas described. Once they understand very well the lyrics you can play it then give the hand out for them to use the grammar point. Finally they can either write a paragraph ; if they are in basic level or have a conversation if they are in intermediate or advanced levels. It is important to have a discussion with the whole class at the end using should/ need to/ have to / and if possible expressions of agreement or disagreement. For lower levels these can be as simple as me too, or me neither. Intermediate and advance level can use more complex expressions.

  • Follow up activity :

The words are taken from the song. Some are synonyms of the words used in the song. Once they complete the words, ask the students to identify them in the lyrics. Ask them the meaning of them. Ask them to try to identify the meaning by context.

You can select other words from the song and give only the vowels ask them to write the consonants on the following blank chart provided for you to use. This time you can use six-letter words.

    ------------------------------- Pedagogic Notes :

The words are taken from the song.

This activity is ideal to make help students memorize vocabulary, check the spelling and identify the syllables per words. Students should work with the words in context to find out the meaning. If they cannot find it by context you can give the translation to Spanish, but after that it is important that they make sentences using the vocabulary or they read it again in the lyrics. Vocabulary should not be learnt in isolation. Words in context will help them think in English, and communicate ideas properly. Here they can also identify synonyms or antonyms of some of the words used in the song.

At the end you are provided with a blank form for you to change the exercise according to the

words you want them to practice. You can use this format with any song.

  • 14. Don't Save It All For Christmas Day

Celine Dion Don't get so busy that you miss Giving just a little kiss To the ones you love Don't even wait a little while To give them just a little smile A little is enough How many people are crying People are dying How many people are asking for Love (Chorus) So Don't Save It All For Christmas Day Find a way To give a little love everyday Don't Save It All For Christmas Day Find your way 'Cause holidays have come and gone But love lives on If you give on Love... How could you wait another minute A hug is warmer when you're in it And Baby that's a fact And saying "I love you's" always better Seasons, reasons, they don't matter So don't hold back

How many people in this world So needful in this world How many people are praying for love So Don't Save It All For Christmas Day Find a way To give a little love everyday Don't Save It All For Christmas Day Find your way 'Cause holidays have come and gone But love lives on If you give on Love... Let all the children know Everywhere that they go Their whole life long Let them know love Don't Save It All For Christmas Day Find your way To give a little love everyday Don't Save It All For Christmas Day Find a way Everyone, everywhere Don't Save It All For Christmas Day Find your way 'Cause holidays have come and gone But love lives on If you give on Love... Love........

  • Rules of the Game & Cards: Participants can play in pairs or in groups of three or four. There are four teams. Each team is allocated a color (blue, green, purple or yellow ) and its given three counters in their allocated color. One person (student or teacher) must act as Referee. They throw a dice, and move up either to the right or left ( following the arrows ). When they stop in a given letter, a member of the team seated opposite will give a vocabulary word starting with that letter and they must give the definition, if you want you can also ask them to spell the word or phrase. It is also possible for this role to rotate around the players in a team. If there is more than one player per team, a Speaker must be elected. This role can also rotate around the team members. Choose one player/team to start and then work clockwise around the board. The objective for each player/team is to hop towards the center answering questions along the way about the vocabulary of the songs in this manual, finally reaching the finish.

    Gloria Estefan

If I could only have one wish this holiday Without a second thought I'd have to say

That you can't find what I want in any store I just want you to be mine and nothing more

No brand new clothes could fill my lonely soul When the snow falls on the ground and it gets cold

No expensive gift you put under my tree Will keep me warm this holiday if you're not holding me

I don't want diamond rings, perfume or brand new shoes Baby all I want for Christmas is you

Santa bring, on your sleigh, just for me this holiday

The one I want and make my dreams come true I'll be good every day, I'll put some love on layaway

And spend it all this Christmas on you La la la la la la la la la la lay

Gonna put some love on layaway for you La la la la la la la la la la lay

Gonna spend it all this Christmas on you

If I could win your heart and show you how I feel Ain't no way you're gonna find a better deal

I've been saving all my loving for so long And after Christmas is over it still keeps going on Everyday would be like Christmas from now on

Santa bring that love to me where it belongs

Santa bring, on your sleigh, just for me this holiday The one I want and make my dreams come true

I'll be good every day, I'll put some love on layaway And spend it all this Christmas on you

La la la la la la la la la la lay Gonna put some love on layaway for you

  • 16. It Must Have Been Old Santa Harry Connick Jr.

I think I saw ol' Santa through my window Christmas eve My eyes were really droopy but I really do believe It must've been ol' Santa 'cause I saw his big red hat And I know my mom and dad can't fly like that And then I heard some footsteps in the hall outside my door The same ol' Christmas trick my dad had played since I was four He stands outside my bedroom yelling "Ho! Ho! Ho!" because He knows I don't believe in Santa Claus I think my daddy sees me Peeking from my door But he pretends he's Santa anyway Every year he tries to fool me But I'm a big boy now I don't believe in Santa or his sleigh... No way! So I went back to bed and I curled up nice and tight I stared out my window and looked into the night And then, all of a sudden, through my window I could see Santa Claus was flying by and smiling at me Chorus: Santa Claus, Santa Claus It must've been ol' Santa Claus Santa Claus, Santa Claus Happy "Ho! Ho! Ho!" to you Then I heard ol' Rudolph tellin' me to come outside He told me that ol' Santa wanted me to take a ride I climbed out of my window and I jumped onto his sleigh Then ol' Santa took me up up and away Santa took me up up and away We flew high above the rooftops of my sleepy town below I saw my big red school house and the town square picture show It was really past my bedtime and so ol' Santa said "Little boys like you should be in bed" So I hollered "Ho! Ho! Ho!" And I put on Santa's hat Then he let me hold the reins a while We pulled up to my window And I jumped back in my room And I waved goodbye to Santa with a smile When I woke up Christmas morning it was clear and bright My parents said my window had blown open in the night I smiled as I told them that it must've been the cat And they asked me where I got my big red hat Chorus

  • ------------------------------- Modals ( Necessity ) Must, have (got ) to, neednt, mustnt Necessity means that you cannot avoid doing something. You must buy a ticket = You cannot go without a ticket. Use the Negative forms of have (got ) to when there is no necessity. It is also possible to use neednt when there is no necessity. Ought to , should Use these modals when something is the right thing to do. There is little difference between ought to and should but ought to is sometimes a little stronger than should. In Something to Sing and Speak Part 3 you have exercises to practice the Modals of

    Certainty.

Notice that adjectives and adverbs can often be used to paraphrase the logical uses but only rarely the social uses, of modals: Must necessarily, very (certainly) High certainty Will fairly certain Should probable, probably, likely May perhaps, maybe, quite possible Could, might possible, possibly Low certainty

  • ------------------------------- Wonderful Christmas: The purpose of the activity is to make students use the correct word order for adjective + enough and too + adjective and understand that they use too with a adjectives that have a negative implication : like too expensive, too ugly, too stupid. Using the adjectives plus enough and too is very appropriate to describe Wonderful Christmas time. Students have to identify the word in each pair that will be used with too and the other will be used with enough and the negative form in order to say the same thing:

This present is too expensive / This present is not cheap enough Instructions to use the Chart: Divide the class in groups of 3 or 4 ( maximum ), Photocopy the Chart and give every team one chart One member from team 1 will give a letter and a number for team 2. For example: (Letter c, Number 3 ) One member from team 2 has 5 seconds to make two sentences with the same meaning using both words, too and

enough. (She is too stupid/ She is not intelligent enough ) Now a member from team 2 picks a number and a letter for team 3 and so on until all teams have made up their

sentences. Very frequently theres one student in a team who wants to give all the answers, dont let the same student give the

answer. Everyone should participate. The typical mistake will be to use the wrong word order or the positive idea with too like she is too intelligent or

she is not stupid enough. If they have a mistake they dont get the point. If one student who already answered gives another sentence the team doesnt get the point. If they take more than 5 seconds they dont get the point. (You can decide if 5 seconds is enough, depending the level

and the class, when the student starts saying the sentence you stop counting to let the student concentrate on the answer).
