Show students the bar chart and ask them if they can compare the crime rate in West Midlands against the National average.

I will show the students ‘crime mapping’ on the West Yorkshire Police website to identify the crime rate in the Bradford area.

I will explain some of the advantages and disadvantages of using official crime statistics.

I will ask students to work in small groups (3), to consider why all crime are not reported or recorded. I will use questioning to assess their answers.

I will play the ‘dark figure of crime’ clip. And after ask students view on this.

I will give students a key term sheet which they need to learn for next week sessions. As I will assess their understanding of this by giving them a test.

Students will look at the chart and compare the crime rates, they can work with the person next to them.

Students can identify the crime rate around the Bradford Area, and then they can explain to the group why they think certain types of crime take place in particular area of the city.

Students will also give some of their reasons why official crime statistics are at a disadvantage or an advantage.

Students will work in small groups and write why they think all crime is not reported or recorded. Students will give their answers in a class discussion.

Students will make notes whilst watching the clip and give their feedback to the class of the clip.

Students will take the Key Term sheet, and they can leave, or stay and ask any questions if they wish about the session or any other concerns they have.
