CULTURAL INSIGHT
Even if you really don't like something, it can be considered rude if you simply say "I hate it" in Indonesian. For example, it's not a good idea to say Aku benci daging sapi to mean "I hate beef." It’s better to say Aku tidak suka daging sapi, meaning "I don't like beef." Or to be more polite you can just say "I like something better." For example Aku lebih suka ayam, which means "I like chicken better."

One problem you might have in Indonesian is when you ask a question that has various possible answers. For example, "Which is your favorite one?" In this case, you have to use Mana, which is in fact the literal translation of "which" or "which one." So, Kamu suka yang mana? means "Which one do you prefer?"

When using the verb Datang, be careful since we can’t use it to say "Come in!" like in English. You can’t use it when you invite someone to enter a room, for example. In Indonesian we don’t use datang, but the verb Masuk instead. In that case it will be Silahkan masuk! That means "Please come in!"

CULTURAL INSIGHT
In the old days, when everyone was still using landline phones, people would answer the phone by saying their name, or their family name. But nowadays, the majority of households rely solely on mobile phones, and so people can usually see who’s calling on the phone screen. That’s why people no longer answer with their names. Most often people will answer the phone by just saying Halo.
