As we next week celebrate the First Sunday of Lent, I would like to list our parish services as well as our diocesan procedures for this special season of preparation. I can think of no better way to prepare for the feast of Easter than by receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion. And I urge you to take advantage of these two God-given gifts and to also allow our local procedures for abstinence, fasting and Way of the Cross to make this Lenten season a fruitful one.

So please remember that our St. John weekday Masses are celebrated each day at 8:30 am. If you need to plan for work schedule, you can figure that our daily Masses normally conclude by 9:00 am. Also please call any of our neighboring parishes for their Lenten weekday Mass schedule as well and during this season of Lent, we will likewise add a 6:30 a.m. Mass each Thursday.

At the same time, regular reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a key part of observing the Lenten season. Our Confessions are offered each weekday from 8:15 am until Mass time. And then Confessions are likewise offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:00pm. In the meanwhile, the Annual Lenten Communal Penance services, with several priests available at each gathering, will be scattered between March 13 and April 11 in all six of our neighborhood parishes. The complete schedule for these services will be listed on this bulletin cover in the upcoming weeks.

Finally, all Lenten Fridays are designated as days of abstinence (no meat). And then Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are not only days of abstinence but also days of fasting for those ages 14 to 59 (nothing between meals and only one full meal with the other two snacks not equaling a full meal). Also, Way of the Cross will be offered each Lenten Friday (except Good Friday) at 9am and at 6pm.

We hope, above all, that you will use this season of prayer and penance to deepen your love relationship with Almighty God.

Everyone is invited to St. Mark’s Lenten Mission to be given by Abbot Justin Brown of St. Joseph Abbey on March 11th, 12th and 13th, 2019. The sessions will begin at 7:00 p.m. each evening and Confessions will be heard nightly prior to each presentation. It is St. Joseph Abbey which hosts St. Joseph Seminary College, the main college seminary for our Baton Rouge Diocese and 21 other dioceses. We are certain that Abbot Justin’s monastic and seminary experience will make for a delightful background to his spiritual reflection.
