ReunionWeekendSchedule

Dear Grinnellians:

On behalf of the entire Grinnell College community, welcome to the 134th Reunion Weekend!

Reunion Weekend brings together students, alumni, families, faculty, staff and friends for four days of events, entertainment and celebration of the places, people and programs which make us uniquely Grinnell. Dance the night away on Saturday at the Harris Center to Checker and the Bluetones. Celebrate and honor the 2013 Alumni Award recipients at Alumni Assembly. Bring your family to Friday’s Carnival. Gain fresh perspectives throughout the weekend at a wide array of receptions, forums, and performances.

This weekend is the result of months of work by many in the Grinnell College community: alumni volunteers, staff members, faculty, and students. I especially offer thanks to our dedicated Reunion Planning committees, who have worked diligently over the past year planning this reunion with the goal of providing you a terrific opportunity to reconnect with old friends and experience firsthand the many campus transformations since you graduated.

By returning to Grinnell for this milestone weekend, you are actively participating in a process that will help strengthen and enhance Grinnell College. Alumni are an essential part of this community when actively engaged with the life of the College and committed to its success. Your participation in the 2013 Alumni Reunion is a clear demonstration of your love for Grinnell and your desire to help improve the educational experience for all Grinnell students.

Thank you again for your continuing interest, enthusiasm and devotion to Grinnell. We are honored to welcome you home this weekend.

With warm personal regards,

Beth Halloranvice president for development and alumni relations

Stop by our kiosks next to the registration desk and be one of the first to take a sneak-peak live tour of Forum, the newly named replacement to the current Loggia. All alumni are welcome and encouraged to join us, and can help play an important role in the testing of our new product. We’ll have staff available to help current Loggia users claim their Forum account and assist new users in Forum account creation. Emergency and Non-emergency Assistance For emergency, 24-hour assistance, please call the Office of Safety and Security at x4600. From a cell phone or off campus, dial 641-269-4600.

The Reunion registration desk (641-269-3715 or x3715) is “Reunion Central” on campus and can assist you with all non-emergency matters.

Name BadgesPlease be sure to wear your name badge at all times, as it is your entrance pass to all events.

Telephone Use The phones in the residence hall rooms are set up to allow free local calling and will access any of the on-campus phones. To call another campus phone, either another dorm room or campus offices, just dial the appropriate four-digit extension. To dial a local, off-campus number, dial 7 first (there will be no dial tone after pressing 7; this is normal). If you wish to use long distance service, you will need to use a toll-free access option (phone cards, personal 800 numbers, or the ever popular CALL-ATT types).

Art Exhibitions

Animals Among UsBucksbaum Center, Faulconer GalleryAnimals Among Us takes as its premise that we define, structure, and connect with the animal realm in a wide, complex network of relationships that inform our understanding of ourselves as humans. Developed by 10 student curators in the seminar Captured Creatures (fall 2012), the exhibition uses works of art and other artifacts from Grinnell College collections to unpack the connections between humans and animals, and to address — or call into question — the binaries we often think about in relation with animals (wild/domestic, biological/cultural, self/other, human/animal). Drawing on their majors in anthropology, art, biology, history, and literature, the juniors and seniors in the course selected the art, designed the exhibition, shaped its themes, and wrote a catalog exploring our lives among the other animals.

From a Distance: The Art of Lorna BieberBucksbaum Center, Faulconer GalleryPhotographer Lorna Bieber builds her monumental installations from the vast array of images that activate contemporary culture. Through an intense process of taking and remaking these found images, Bieber creates a visual language that evokes memories of past worlds while stoking the imagination to conjure new ones.
