THE EPISTLE !A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Romans Chapter 4 beginning at the 1st verse. What then shall we say about Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness." Now to one who works, his wages are not reckoned as a gift but as his due. And to one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness.  The promise to Abraham and his descendants, that they should inherit the world, did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.  For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants -- not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham, for he is the father of us all, as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations" -- in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.  Reader: Here ends the Reading All: Thanks be to God.

At that time, there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicode'mus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him."  Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God."  Nicode'mus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, `You must be born anew.' The wind blows where it wills, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know whence it comes or whither it goes; so it is with every one who is born of the Spirit."  Nicode'mus said to him, "How can this be?" Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand this?  Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen; but you do not receive our testimony.  If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?  No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life."  For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings, !As we journey through the season of Lent we must keep our gaze fixed on the renewal of Baptismal Vows which takes place within the liturgy at the Great Easter Vigil on the evening of Holy Saturday. !It is to this service that Ash-Wednesday with the imposition of Ashes leads. The Easter Vigil It is a sacred and profound rite beginning with the lighting of the new fire and from that fire the Paschal Candle is lit. !The light of the Paschal Candle is the symbol of the resurrected Christ in the world. It is to the world that Christ comes and this is seen powerfully in today’s Gospel reading, that God sent his Son into the world in order that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:17) !The lenten movement from Ashes to light is also a refection of the illumination that comes through faith and knowledge. !The christian is called upon to be knowledgeable about the scriptures in addition to the discipline and doctrine of the church and its practices. !In the early church the lenten season was used as am opportunity to grow in the knowledge of Christ and in the understanding of what baptism and living the life of Christ meant. !This is why Paul could ask the rhetorical question in Romans 6 !

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were

baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:3-4) !

Paul was aware that they were so instructed so as to receive knowledge of the way of Christ. !We too have been instructed; but there comes a time for that instruction to be renewed. The annual observance of Lent provides a time for us to grow deeper into our faith. It is necessary therefore that we attend the Christian Education sessions. !Without these sessions we run the risk of there being an inadequacy in our sacred our knowledge and so because of this we may not necessarily move on spiritually. !This year in our parish we examine the great heritage that we have in our musical tradition. Our music is theology set to particular rhythms to help us to remember the church’s teaching. !Let us keep the Easter Vigil before our spiritual imagination this Lent and let us participate in yet another Lenten growth series. !!Your friend and priest, !Noel A. We extend greetings today at our 10:00 a.m. Family Service to Members of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. We continue to lift them up in prayer as they participate in their work. !

CONGRATULATIONS Shannon Clarke was part of a Barbadian team ( the other members are Samora Reid and Lybron Sobers) that took the top prize in the Expert Developers category of the Digital Jam 3.0 competition in Jamaica recently. There were more than 50 teams from the region and 160 applications that made it to the finals of the competition. Shannon is the son of Bradston and Brenda Clarke. Congrats to all. !

DESKTOP PUBLISHING COURSE There are still two places available on this course which runs from on Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. over the next three months. !

Health Corner Exercise Prescription for Individuals with Hypertension!!IMPORTANT: Persons with severe or uncontrolled blood pressure should add exercise training to their treatment plan ONLY after first being evaluated by their physician and being prescribed antihypertensive medication. !The following exercise prescription is recommended for persons with hypertension:1 !

!Research shows that aerobic exercise training can reduce resting BP by 5 to 7 mm Hg in individuals with hypertension.2 !REFERENCES

FREQUENCY Aerobic exercise on most, preferably all days of the week; resistance exercise 2-3 days per week

INTENSITY Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise

TIME

30-60 mins per day of continuous or intermittent aerobic exercise. If intermittent, use a minimum of 10-minute bouts accumulated to total 30-60 mins per day of exercise. Resistance training should consist of a t least one set of 8 to 12 repetitions

TYPE

Emphasis should be placed on aerobic activities such as walking, jogging, cycling and swimming. Resistance training using either machine weights or free weights may supplement aerobic training. Such training programs should consist of 8 to 10 different exercises targeting the major muscles groups. Flexibility exercises should be performed after a thorough warm-up and during the cool-down period.
