Self-Assessment: FirstSteps In Identifying Your

Attorney BrandJ. Nick Augustine J.D. is the principal of ALR/PRA, Inc., a full service law practicemanagement agency. Nick advises and assists attorneys in transition in public relationsand marketing. Nick also shares recruiting and staffing experience and tips for legal jobseekers.

Self-assessment is a tool you can use to develop your brand and market your credentials, experience and skills sets. Many attorneys pause and think when asked to describe theirprofessional services brand. Attorney branding is the process by which your personal andprofessional attributes are received and recalled by others. Have you ever heard someoneask for an attorney referral by describing the desired characteristics of the perfect match tothe client’s needs?

Self-assessment begins with the honest examination of your past professional, academic andpersonal achievements and struggles. Sometimes we experience tunnel vision in law andforget about our most obvious strengths and weaknesses. Our strengths can often beinferred from compliments. At times, we receive compliments and brush them off, trying tomaintain a sense of humility. It is a challenge to accept and learn from compliments.Accepting and thanking others for their comments we moves us closer to learning how toobjectively assess how we are received by others.

Continue your assessment by making a list of activities you least enjoy. This exercise mayhelp you avoid certain practice areas where you know you will be unhappy. It isn’t news thatwe perform best when we enjoy our work. Next, try reading your resume out loud to yourself, imagining that you are talking about your education and experience in an interview setting. Inyour mirror, or pretend audience, describe a few times you have taken pride in someaccomplishments. Write down those accomplishments and focus on why you think you weresuccessful. As you highlight credentials and experiences on your resume you have theopportunity to market your attorney brand.

Social networking sites contain plenty of assessment clues. If you are on LinkedIn, take alook at your recommendations and note a few of the qualities others have noticed andconsidered when supporting you by making the recommendation. Similarly, take a look at thetype of compliments you receive using other social media, what do people “like” about you?Consider this when you review your friends and contacts’ impressions of you and why theywould recommend you as an attorney.

You can also take self-assessment to the next step and engage with a business coach withassessment software. One of my clients is a business coach and I took her assessment aspart of a leadership management course. As I reviewed the assessment results, Iexperienced a feeling of reinforcement that my work habits complimented my skills andhabits.

The process of personal and professional self-discovery is ongoing. At many stages in ourcareers we have the opportunity to reflect on the past. By revisiting the past we can gaugeour progress as we move forward in our career transitions. Self-assessment is a tool touncovering your potential and most salient skills necessary to landing the next client or job.

5—LEGAL EMPLOYMENT WEEKLY

HERE’S WHY

PARALEGALS

ATTEND THE IPA

EDUCATION

SEMINAR AND

ANNIVERSARY

DINNER

BY: Caren Mansfield, a

member of the Illinois

Paralegal Association

On November 4, 2010

the Illinois Paralegal

Association will hold its

Annual Fall Education

Conference. The IPA cel-

ebrates its thirty eighth

anniversary as an associa-

tion with the Anniversary

Luncheon. Featured

speaker for the luncheon

is Edward C. Carter,

Assistant Attorney

General. The purposes

for the IPA hosting the

Education Conference

and Anniversary Dinner

are several-fold.

For many years the IPA

has been hosting educa-

tional conferences. With

the passage of years the

Education Conference has

expanded to multi-track

sessions of substantive

continuing legal educa-

tion. In an effort to reach

as many paralegals as

possible who are practic-

ing in different areas of

the law the sessions range

in topic from corporate

law to family law to real

estate law, just to name a

few. Technology sessions

are also provided so para-

legals have an opportuni-

ty to be right on target

with the newest and most

recent software and hard-

ware.

The luncheon speaker

brings timely issues to the

Education Conference

attendees. This year Mr.

Carter will discuss his

work as a supervisor of a

staff of prosecutors in the

Attorney General’s office

that works with federal

and state law enforcement

agencies in the investiga-

tion and prosecution of

economic crimes perpe-

trated against Illinois citi-

zens, business and state

government.

A reminder here. The

IPA was formed to pro-

mote communication

between the paralegal

profession, the legal pro-

fession and other organi-

zations as well as to

encourage continuing

legal education for parale-

gals in their areas of

respective specialties.

Also, the IPA was formed

to inform members of

developments in the para-

legal profession. The

Education Conference

and Anniversary

Luncheon provides the

IPA an opportunity to

engage in all of the pur-

poses for which it was

formed. The Education

Conference allows mem-

bers and non-members

alike the prospect of cred-

ible, often innovative con-

tinuing legal education. It

also allows paralegals to

meet other paralegals and

lawyers. Networking is of

primary importance for

paralegals. It allows for

the exchange of new

ideas, good old ideas, and

a chance to make

acquaintance with indi-

viduals who one might

not otherwise meet.

The Anniversary

Luncheon is a chance for

paralegals to network,

socialize and learn. The

IPA makes this lunch

event a time to recognize

efforts by members on

behalf of the IPA and the

profession.

There is still time to sign

up and attend. Don’t miss

this opportunity to learn.

Visit the IPA

website at

www.ipaonline.org for an

Education Conference

brochure. You can sign

up online. Contact

Yvonne at 815-462-4620
