DPS Dubai – The School with a Loving Heart
Mufti Day Garners Funds for Nepal Earthquake Victims
When the quake hit Nepal on April 25, 2015, it was as if the tremors resonated in the hearts of the
students of DPS Dubai. While the outpouring of grief, shock and empathy for the people of Nepal
still wracked the students, they were already making plans on how to help the devastated nation.
We are glad to say that our students collected Dhs. 20,000/- for the Nepal victims and donated the
amount to the Nepal Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. We hope our help will go some way to bring
relief to our friends and neighbours of India.

The DPS family sends their love, help and goodwill on the wings of a prayer to our brothers and
sisters in Nepal.
KHDA and DPS Dubai Partners in Imparting Holistic Education:
At the KHDA workshop our school was one of the eight schools and the only CBSE School, whose
presentation was voted most popular. We were invited as facilitator to present on the topic 'From
concept to reality – how we plan, implement and assess' in early years on 18 May 2015.
The presentation showcased the journey of planning, implementation and assessment while teaching
important concepts to ensure learning is enduring. It also included interesting activities and projects,
which simulate real life.
Disaster Mitigation – “School, Projects at Display at What Worked”
DPS Dubai to the Rescue!
In our presentation we exemplified how our students created awareness, collaborated to find
solutions, generated empathy and raised funds during disasters.
A 3-D demonstrative model of the MUN conference, puppet show of evacuation procedure, and a
collage depicting the student led initiatives showed how it is done in DPS Dubai.
They emphasized on how,‘Radio shows’ in our school were used to organize effective campaigns,
followed by the role played by class assemblies in spreading the word. Practical demonstration in
assemblies and regular evacuation drills was another aspect that they focused on. They also
showcased MUN@DPSD as an initiative where the broad student community was involved. It was
flagged as an important platform to showcase innovative solutions for the very topic in discussion
and others in general. Finally, they put some light on the fact that, as students they have been
continuously sensitized towards such a cause and when the Nepal Earthquake occurred, the student
fraternity were able to respond empathetically.
It was an exemplary learning experience as the students got to interact with individuals belonging to
different organizations who complimented the facets of our school, encouraged us to keep up the
good work and gave us an insight on some new ideas which we could try and implement. We also felt
proud when we were commended on the initiatives taken by our school in this regard and appreciated
of the fact that our student council takes up such causes in such a lively and enthusiastic manner.
We Can for Good!
Can Collection Campaign DPS students enthusiastically participated in EEG ‘Can Collection Campaign’. A ten member Can
Collection Committee, comprising of students, was formed to motivate all the students to contribute

were crushed before packing.
Due to the sincere efforts of our students a total of 25 Kgs of used Cans were collected. Two teachers
went to the Can Collection Campaign site (Al Barsha Pond Park) to deposit the collected cans. In lieu
8
of the collected cans, a receipt proclaiming the collection of 25 Kgs cans was issued in favor of DPS
Dubai. The Can Collection Campaign sensitized our students about the protection of our
environment. DPS Dubai, which sensitizes its students towards the environmental issues, will work
tirelessly to save the environment.

Dr. Terry O’Brien Interacts with DPS Dubai
Dr. Terry O’Brien the prolific writer, quiz enthusiast and motivational speaker extraordinaire, visited
DPS Dubai on the morning of 26 of April. His talk was peppered with witticisms and everyday
homilies, told in his ever inimitable, humorous style. His interactive session with the students of
Grade VIII was a wonderful learning experience and was received with huge appreciation.
The students asked pertinent questions, which Dr. Terry O’Brien answered; quoting examples from
the Haadith and Bhagwad Gita. His quips on the usage of the English language brought the house
down. His answers were prompt and truly relevant as they were bolstered by examples taken from
real life situations – many times from his own life.
Later, our enthusiastic students bought the books penned by our favourite author and had the
privilege of having them signed by him. The students were enthusiastic listeners and participated
whole heartedly in the session.
About the author:

The Test4Good – A Giving Initiative
Test4Good is a KHDA initiative run by schools and students in Dubai. It gives parents the
opportunity to revisit their school days by taking a sample version of the international assessment
examinations currently being taken by students. It is Invigilated and marked by students.
DPS Dubai actively supported Test4Good. It coincided with our student led initiative – ‘Exam Stress
Management Campaign’.
The Test4Good was held at DPS Dubai on April 30, 2015. The upside of the test is that parents and
teachers were put in students’ shoes, having to face the brunt of an examination and the terror of
being strictly invigilated.
It’s a reminder to parents of the stress that students undergo while doing tests and exams. The PISA
exam is also conducted along the same lines, where students have to use lateral and critical thinking
skills to crack these International Bench Tests.
Parents can rest assured that their papers will be corrected fairly by the students! Weren’t the
students’ invigilators absolutely cute?
Test4Good is the first giving initiative in Dubai that all school are taking part in, it is about the
parents connecting with their kids to read for fun, and it is about increasing awareness of autism and
donating to a good cause (Dubai Autism Centre). It is about making parents sit a test that is managed
and marked by students.
Judging by their smiles, we are sure that the parents scored a 100% in the happiness quotient. The
test must have made them realize that their children are very clever and precious and deserve the very
best in life.

Themes:
The Wonderful Themes at DPS Dubai:
We are pleased to inform you that this year we have two themes which we will explore via activities
and programs. They are:
1. Beyond the Moon and Mars
2. High on Happiness.
DPS Dubai recognizes that the future belongs to Science, innovation and enterprise. We appreciate
that we must inspire our students to think, to be creative and ambitious. We would like to sow the
seeds of futuristic ideas - of interstellar travel, inhabiting other planets, alien life and solving the
mysteries of the universe. In the not so distant future such research is what may be required to
sustain humankind. The truth is out there! Ever wondered what is there ‘Beyond the Moon and
Mars”?
Yet, we also understand that our world needs peace, good health, harmony, tolerance, inclusivity and
understanding, for these, too, are a prerequisite of survival.
Thus we spark off ideas on how to be happy, the importance of well being and discussions on what
truly makes us happy. Let’s get ‘High on Happiness’!
The school has already initiated many fruitful programs that explore the ‘High on Happiness’ factor
and we are pleased to note that the students of DPS Dubai are a happy lot and have a wonderful set of
values that recognizes that the best things in life are free; like friendship, advice from the teacher, the
love and laughter within the family and the spirit of goodwill throughout the world. The Theme
Beyond the Moon and Mars has been explored as a sign of our times which talks of breaking the
glass ceiling, pushing ourselves beyond boundaries, exploring new avenues, being innovative,
creative and enterprising. The scientific temperament and entrepreneurial skills have also been given
free rein and we were privileged to witness this aspect in the recently concluded Citizens Forum -
11
Future Forward which brought the student fraternity of Dubai together to explore the wonders of
technology and its ethical and innovative usage in all walks of life.
Off to a Flying Start:

that we offer them all through the year. Ours is a school that believes in Holistic Development and
hence the new media initiative is to reach out to the parents and student community and also make
connections with the wider World community.
DPS Dubai is working on the G’s of happiness – Growth, Gumption, Giving, Grace and
Gratitude. The Students’ Council have taken it in turns to talk about one of the G’s of Happiness to inform and
instill the positivity of these wonderful values. For example, as our students explained Growth is all
about pushing yourself to do better or recognizing and rectifying your flaws, to give yourself the
ability to lead a happier more fulfilling life. Gumption refers to your guts or to your ability to endure
through difficult situations. It is your robustness in the face of problems”.
