By Julian Treasure

THE HUMAN VOICE.
THE HUMAN VOICE.
The most powerful sound in the world.
THE HUMAN VOICE.
The most powerful sound in the world.
Probably the only sound that can….
…start a war…
…or say I love you.
And yet when people speak…….
And yet when people speak…….
…..others don’twant to listen.
Why is that?
How can we speakpowerfully to make change
in the world?
We can start by dealing with…..
We can start by dealing with…..
the 7 deadly sins of speaking.
We can start by dealing with…..
1. GOSSIP
We can start by dealing with…..
2.JUDGING
3. NEGATIVITY
4. COMPLAINING
5. EXCUSES
6. EXAGGERATION
7. DOGMATISM
So here they are.

DOGMATISM
But is there a positive way to think about this?
Yes, there is.
There are 4 really powerful foundations that we can stand on if
we want our speech to be powerful and make change in the
world.
And thankfully these things make a word…..
And thankfully these things make a word…..
HAIL
No, not this…..
….this.
HAIL

Honesty AIL

Now the human voice can be thought of as a toolbox.
Now the human voice can be thought of as a toolbox.
A toolbox that very few people have ever opened.
Some of these tools can increase the power of your speaking.
Let’s take a look.
1. Register
This refers to the range of tones in the human voice. These registers include modal voice, vocal fry,
falsetto and the whistle register.
2. Timbre
This refers to the quality of tone that distinguishes different types of sound production such as
voices and musical instruments.
3. Prosody
This is concerned with those elements of speech that are not individual vowels
or consonants but are properties of syllables and larger units of speech.
4. Pace
This is the speed with which somebody speaks. For example sometimes speaking quickly and then slowing down
can emphasize what is being said.
5. Pitch
How high or low someone’s voice is , is usually referredto as the pitch. Sometimes higher pitch can be used to
add exclamation to a point.
6. Volume
Volume can be used to get the audience’s attention byraising the volume at a point to show excitement or
lower the volume at a point to stress focus on something.

Of course, where all this comes into play is when you have something important to do.
It might be……
…..standing on a stage and giving a talk……
…proposing marriage…..
…asking for a raise…
Or whatever it may be…
If it’s really important, you owe it to yourself to look at this toolbox and the engine it’s goingto work on.
And no engine works wellwithout being warmed up.
And no engine works wellwithout being warmed up.
So always remember to warm up!
So in closing….This is where we are.

Not Listening
Noise & bad acoustics
But if we were speaking powerfully,
Powerful Speaking
Conscious Listening
Designed Soundscapes
Or to make it a bit larger,
Conscious
Creating Receiving
Designing
What would the world be like if we werecreating sound consciously, consuming sound
consciously and designing all our environments consciously for sound?
That would be a world that would sound…
That would be a world that would sound…
………beautiful.
And understanding…
And understanding…
….would be the norm.
Thank You
