It’s always a good time to learn about the unique species that call Catalina Island home. From blooming

Catalina Island Fox

TM

The Catalina Island fox is found only here on Catalina. These small foxes are omnivores with a diet that includes berries, insects, and mice. Help keep our

foxes healthy and happy by not feeding them human food. A natural diet is best.

Bald Eagle

The Catalina Island Conservancy partnered with the Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS) to bring bald eagles back to Catalina Island after their populations were

affected by the pesticide DDT. Because of this work, today you may see an eagle soaring overhead or hunting with its sharp beak and talons.

Another way to spot eagles is to visit www.iws.org/livecams.html and watch live video of bald eagle nests on Catalina Island.

Catalina OrangetipButterfly

This beautiful buttery is only found on Catalina Island. Look for their white wings with bright orange tips near the rocky slopes and ridge tops they call home.

Catalina Island Quail

The Catalina Island quail is native to the island and is larger than its mainland relative the California quail. Quail are social and can often be seen in groups

called “coveys”. These coveys can have hundreds of individual quail.

Malva Rosa

This plant has a pink and white ower that is both beautiful and a tasty treat for plant-eating animals. It can be found on Bird Rock at Two Harbors, and

other spots where hungry herbivores cannot reach.

American Bison

TM

Bison have been residents of Catalina Island since 1924 when they were brought from the mainland to be in the background for a western lm.

Did you know bison can run as fast as 35 miles per hour? That’s faster than the speed limit for cars on Catalina Island!
