J. Pettersen, (2009) "Defining lean production: some conceptual and practical issues", The TQM Journal, Vol. 21 Iss: 2, pp.127 - 142
Conclusion: no consensus on a definition of lean production between the examined authors. The authors also seem to have different opinions on
which characteristics should be associated with the concept. Overall it can be concluded that lean production is not clearly defined in the reviewed literature. This divergence can cause some confusion on a theoretical level,
but is probably more problematic on a practical level when organizations aim to implement the concept. This paper argues that it is
important for an organization to acknowledge the different variations, and to raise the awareness of the input in
the implementation process. It is further argued that the organization should not accept any random variant of lean, but make active choices and adapt the concept to
suit the organization's needs. Through this process of adaptation, the organization will be able to increase the odds of performing a predictable and successful implementation.
Feiten…

Nurses currently spend less than 35% of their time in direct patient care (O'Neill, S. et al 2011)

Jeffrey Liker
I have visited hundreds of organizations that claim to be advanced practitioners of lean methods. They proudly show off their pet lean projects. And they have done good work, no
doubt. But having studied Toyota for twenty years it is claer to me that in comparison they are rank amateurs.

Winst/ besparen was nooit de drijfveer (“Nice to have effect”)

The key to the Toyota Way and what makes Toyota stands out is not any of the individual elements… But what is important is having alle the elements together as an integrated system. It must be practiced every day in a very consistent manner – not in spurts.
Verschillende productiesystemen
Craft Production
Mass production vb Ford T
Lean Production volgens Toyota (TPS) => “One Piece Flow”
Massaproductie • Hooggeschoolde ontwerpers,
laaggeschoolde arbeiders
• Grote series = weinig input klant
• Kostbare productie goederen
• Gedemotiveerde productiemedewerkers
• Hoge voorraden, hoog werkkapitaal
• Lopende band werk
• Grote reparatieruimtes
• Veel indirecte medewerkers (kwaliteitscontroleurs, schoonmakers, …)
Lean productie • Goed opgeleide operatoren
• Gestandaardiseerd en toch flexibel (Agile)
• Uitdagende taken, bestaande uit meerdere deelgebieden
• Produceren in kleine series (Pull principe)
• Beperkt werkkapitaal
• Teamwork (cel-werking)
• Iedere medewerker voegt waarde toe
• Weinig opslagruimte
• Gemotiveerde medewerkers
• Continu verbeteren
Belangrijke uitgangspunten “Lean management”
Wees geduldig… “For this organizations lean was just not fast enough…” (Burgess and Radnor
2012)
Lean is een continue verbetercultuur => “Continuous Small Improvements”, not in
spurts.
Continu in transitie fase Veranderen vs Verbeteren
1. Base your management decisions on al long-term philosophy even at the expense of short-term financial goals
2. Create continuous (one piece) process flow to bring problems to the surface
3. Use “pull” systems to avoid over production
4. Level out the workload (heijunka)
5. Build a culture of stopping to fix problems, to get quality right the first time (Jidoka)
6. Standardized tasks are the foundation for continuous improvement and employee empowerment
7. Use visual control so no problems are hidden
8. Use only reliable, thoroughly tested technology that serves your people and processes
9. Grow leaders who thoroughly understand the work, live the philosophy and teach it to others
10. Develop exceptional people and teams who follow your company’s philosophy
11. Respect your extended network of partners and suppliers by challenging them and helping them to improve
12. Go and see for yourself to thoroughly understand the situation (genchi genbutsu of go to gemba)
13. Make decisions slowly by consensus, thoroughly considering all options; implement decisions rapidly
14. Become a learning organisation through relentless reflection (hansei) and continuous improvement (Kaizen)

Enkele kritische reflecties
Wij zijn Toyota niet!
Elke patiënt is uniek!
Lean Paradox
Hoe inventariseren we de “Voice of Customer”
Noodzakelijk Niet noodzakelijk
Waarde Toevoegend Waarde Waarde
Dank u!
