Leadership Wilson Class of 2013

Page 4: Leadership Wilson 2013

Page 4 • Leadership Wilson 2013

It’s all about being involved and work-ing together as a group for the benefit ofour Community. That is how I would sumup my year with Leadership Wilson.

I had heard great things about Leader-ship Wilson. Enough to spark my interestand know that I wanted to be a part of itbut of course did not fully comprehend theentire scope of the organization. I think itwould be safe to say that the rest of theclass as well as all past graduates wouldagree they felt the same going into it at thebeginning.

We started out with our overnight re-treat last September. This is organized towhere basically 32 strangers go up on aThursday morning and get home on Fri-day afternoon where you at least remembereveryone’s name in the group and a littlebit about each other and their jobs and in-terests. Now I can say it was also the begin-ning of a group of new lifelong friends! And I would be remiss if I left out our“Best Mascot Ever”, Santa! Sorry, you willhave to ask someone in the class of 2013for the inside scoop.

From there we had a monthly meetingthat focused on different areas of the com-munity. We traveled and visited different

places within Wilson County from 7:30till around 5:00. Each month was focusedon a different segment such as Agriculture,Business, Education, Government, and soon. When returning home from each ofthese days I would share the daily agendawith my wife and little girl. She calledthese “Field Trips”. So I would go into along discussion trying to explain to her thebest I could on how these were importantbusiness trips where I was learning a lotabout the community. After further debateI simply had to give in to her that, yeshoney, these are field trips! If you have alittle girl you understand what I mean.

Each of these monthly “Field Trips” wasjam packed with anything to do with thattopic that existed in Wilson County. Thesereally enlighten you to everything we haveto offer here not to mention the addedsense of pride it gives me for our commu-nity. I realized there were so many thingsin my own backyard that I had no clueabout but am now proud of.

Additionally we had individual tasksthat we had to complete as part of our pro-gram but none more important than ourgroup projects. This is where the rubber re-ally starts to meet the road. Everyone was

broken into 5 groups by individual talentsand you must come together and createand complete a meaningful communityevent. I found that many important andwell known civic events in Wilson Countyactually began as a Leadership WilsonProject. Our class of course contributed noless. There were projects that worked withthe Red Cross on community blood drives,A Leadership Wilson Alumni Luncheonand a Special Needs Beauty Pageant whichwill actually occur at the Wilson CountyFair this year. You don’t want to miss it!There is also a project that started called“Wilson County Help Quest” where thosein need can go to find the many availableresources here in our county. Lastly therewas our group Project where we teamed upwith the Wilson County Adult LearningCenter. Our group is called the “OpenBook Society” and our focus has been tohelp eliminate adult illiteracy in WilsonCounty. The adult learning center focuseson helping people obtain their GED.Problem was that so many people showedup that could not read well enough tostudy and take the tests. That’s where wecome in. We set up a program with volun-teers to help people learn to read so they

can get their GED.Probably one of the things that made

me most proud of each group is the factthat each one reached out and got otherleaders in the community involved. As awhole, we had the Red Cross, CumberlandUniversity, area churches, county chambers& rotaries, county politicians, the WilsonCounty Fair, High Schools and past LWAlumni all involved in these projects whichultimately help Wilson County. This iswhat makes the program so successful andsustaining after each class has graduated. Iam proud to say that our group has made acommitment to stay together and have de-cided to start a 501c3 organization so wecan continue to help not only the illiteracyproject but other non profits in WilsonCounty.

So all in all Leadership Wilson has notonly helped me understand the benefitsand pride of being a resident of WilsonCounty but how I and others can benefitfrom giving back to the community. Oh,and did I mention…..2013 is The BestClass Ever!

Leadership Wilson“Drain the Vein” Team’s project report:Dan Midgett, Sandra Bond, Katy Biddle, Dennis Mitchell, Stewart Knowles, Shawn Smith, Debbie Joines

“Every two seconds someone in the United States needs a blood product. Additionally, 38% of the population is eligible to donate but only 5% of thosequalified bother to give.” Wilson County has historically consumed more blood than donated according to the American Red Cross (ARC). Our “Drain theVein” Blood Drive will make an impact on Wilson County and hopefully become an annual event. Permission was granted by Mr. Mike Davis, Director ofSchools, to coordinate and promote blood drives in every public high school in the county including area businesses. After meeting with each school’s HOSArepresentative and our ARC liaisons, dates were set. On April 30 we will assist the American Red Cross in a blood drive at Wilson Central High School from 8am until 2 pm with openings to the public, and concurrently at Lebanon High School from 8 am until 2 pm. On May 22 Mount Juliet High School will havea blood drive from 8 am until 2 pm and concurrently Watertown High School will have a blood drive from 8:30 am until 1:30 pm with slots open to the pub-lic. Our team has secured (in addition to the t-shirts given to donors by the Red Cross) buy 1 get one free coupons from Baskin-Robbins, and from McDon-alds for every donor, and we are coordinating with local media to get the word out in the local papers, and on the Coleman & Company Radio program toadvertise the blood drives. Posters are being prepared to give to the schools to advertise “Drain the Vein.” These will be distributed to the schools to encouragestudents to Give the Gift of Life.

Wilson County HelpQuest?Shelly Barnes, Gail Proctor, Mike Ripski, Jim Gibbs, Helen McPeak, David KimbleWilson County HelpQuest is an internet based database for detailed information about community services in Wilson County, TN. Wilson County HelpQuest can help you find information regarding:

• Clothing Services• Disability Services• Disaster Relief• Educational Services• Financial Assistance• Food and Meals• Furniture• Government Assistance Programs• Housing Services• Legal Services• Medical Treatment and Healthcare• Senior Citizen Resources• Support Groups• Transportation• Violence Services

Why was Wilson County HelpQuest Developed? The goal was to provide a free, centralized, online database of social services, organizations and community resources. A community needs assessment con-ducted in 2012, revealed the need for access to such information by both those seeking help and those who help those in need.

How did Wilson County HelpQuest begin?Wilson County HelpQuest was created in 2013 by Cumberland University students. The idea for HelpQuest came out of a discussion between the UT Exten-sion, Wilson County Community Coalition and the Wilson County Health Council. Leadership Wilson’s Executive Director, Dorie Mitchell, created a projectfor the 2013 class that focused on community services. The 2013 Leadership Wilson HelpQuest team worked diligently to bring this vision to a reality.

Mission Statement of Wilson County HelpQuestThe mission of Wilson County HelpQuest is to provide the necessary tools to help individuals and families find help related to community resources in WilsonCounty, TN.

2013 Class ProjectsThe Open Book SocietyTina Winfree, Brian Abston, Virginia South, Alesia Burnley, Terry Burn, Joni Cochran

Our Leadership Wilson Group, The Open Book Society, is working on a project to eliminate adult illiteracy in Wilson County with the goal of helpingthese people earn their GED. We want to help the community in Wilson County become part of the solution to reduce the number of illiterate adults. Re-ducing illiteracy will ultimately improve the quality of life in Wilson County for everyone by increasing the number of people who are fully functioning, pro-ductive contributors to the community.

Partnering with the staff at The Adult Learning Center, we held an informational event in March at Charlie Daniels park, which yielded 15 volunteertutors. Two training sessions ensued on April 6 and April 8 to begin the process of developing those tutors. Terry Burns spoke on the Coleman show atWANT radio about our project. Our next phase is to create a public information campaign to inform adults who cannot read that the opportunity exists tolearn to read. Providence United Methodist Church has adopted our cause and has committed to providing tutors, meeting space, and other support for thelong term.

Our motto, “Open books, Open minds,” speaks to our ultimate goal of improving the quality of life for Wilson Countians on many levels. We are only asstrong as our weakest link.

Alumni LuncheonAdam Bannach, Paul Johnson, Jack Pratt, Cathy Rhodes, Jay Cameli, Leslie Steele

The Alumni Luncheon Project Team set out to create an event to bring twenty years of Leadership Wilson classes together to reminisce, network and provewho really is the Best Class Ever. Our secondary goal was to raise a little money for future Leadership Wilson projects.

Several versions of the event were considered before we settled on an Alumni Luncheon. Our biggest hurdle was putting this on without a budget. The venue was easy, Jay Cameli offered us the use of the Mt Juliet Community Center and helped

rally the alumni to attend. Leslie Steele was able to get our tables from Cumberland University and coordinated decorating them. Paul Johnson took care ofprinting and mailing our invitations through US Community Credit Union. He also took care of email reminders and our event programs. Jack Pratt, YOURWilson County Property Assessor, worked on getting the alumni classes fired up to attend and prove who really is the Best Class Ever. He provided a trophythat will be passed around to the attending members of the winning class and t-shirts for the entire class. Adam Bannach, principal at Lakeview Elementaryand Wilson County Commissioner, created donation cards, a small presentation and was an amazing emcee for the event. Cathy Rhodes, owner of Town Plan-ner Community Calendar, provided lunch and kept the group organized with meetings and reminders. She coordinated the four alumni speakers to presenttheir group projects and how they have benefited our community.

We look forward to this becoming an annual event to bring alumni together and raise some funds for Leadership Wilson. Our inaugural event raised almost$2000! Thank you to all who attended.

Celebrating Beauty: A Special Needs Pageant Lynn Cable, Helene Singer Cash, Jill Booker, Jennifer McGlothlin, Hannah Melton, Veronica Mallicoat

This special needs beauty pageant will be directly aligned with this year’s Wilson County Fair. It is an opportunity for girls with moderate to severe disabili-ties a place to shine! There will be four divisions serving girls in preschool-high school ages. One winner and three runners up will be awarded flowers, sash, and trophies in each division. All participants will receive two fair passes as well. The data for this great event is Saturday, August 17, 2013 and will take placeon the community stage (Winfree Bryant Middle School will serve as the location in the event of rain) Mr. Andy Brummett has agreed to be the master of cere-monies. The committee has met several times and is currently seeking donations/sponsorships from community members. All funds will flow through the fairboard’s budget.

I cannot believe Youth Leadership Wil-son is already over. I remember driving tothe very first meeting wondering if itwould be any fun.

Now that I have graduated I cannot ex-press how much fun it actually was. I amso grateful I was selected from WatertownHigh School. Because of this experience Ihave made many friends and I have learnedmany different things. I have been givenmany opportunities that I otherwise wouldnot have be given. A few things we got todo was walk through the county jail, sit ina State Representative seat, meet GovernorBill Haslem, ring bells for the SalvationArmy, take a tour of the Cracker Barrelhome office, and walk through an Amazonstore house. All of these were unique andonce in a lifetime opportunities. I want tothank my principal, Mr. Luttrell for lettingme attend, and also Ms. Dorie Mitchell forputting up with all of us.

I truly am going to miss it and all of myYouth Leadership Wilson friends.
