Article abstractSegmentation studies are an auspicious point of convergence for thepreoccupations of sociologists of work and analysts of structured socialinequality. However six conditions are essential for such studies to reachbeyond mere descriptions of situations in the labour market. Following thislogic, we propose that two theoretical principles be joinlly used in segmentingeconomic activity : economic segmentation, which pertains to the economicpower of the firms in their product and capital markets, and to their ability topay their workers; and work segmentation, which refers to the powerrelationships among the various protagonists present in the enterprises.Results from a study in Québec are briefly presented.
