I’d like to take the opportunity to talk about The Innovator magazine. Many of you are already familiar with this publication, while others will discover it for the first time. The magazine you’re currently holding in your hands is making a big comeback to the residences with a new format and even more content and information specifically chosen for you, our valued readers.

It’s no coincidence that this magazine’s name is The Innovator. After all, innovation is one of Le Groupe Maurice’s fundamental values. It inspires creativity in us and signifies our commitment to being ahead of the curve. For my team and myself, it also represents our desire to make a genuine difference in seniors’ residences.

I believe that in 2018, it’s no longer enough to simply respond to your needs with high-quality service. That’s a given for any company, whatever its line of business. What I’m talking about is anticipating your needs and wishes and exceeding your expectations.

You’ll experience innovation from the moment you step into your new home at one of our residences. Innovation will help you stay socially active thanks to the THÉIA communication terminals, and it will assist with your activities based on your leisure profile.

You’ll experience innovation in your residence’s dining room thanks to the Fresh Traditions program.Innovation will also benefit your health thanks to SOFI, a powerful electronic tool that securely manages your health records. I could give you endless other examples of innovation at Le Groupe Maurice.

So why put out a magazine in paper format, you ask? While new methods of communication do help us interact with you more effectively, nothing replaces the feeling of having a real, printed publication in your hands. That sensation, which I believe is very special, is particularly powerful when it comes from a newspaper or magazine. I believe this format can be adapted to the times and even convey a sense of change.

I like doing things differently and pushing imagination and creativity to the limit. And the key to all this, in my mind, is to seek out new ideas and be drivers of change, not be driven to change.

The Innovator embodies this spirit and emotion.

Enjoy reading!

Louise and François Boileau from the Ekla residence in Quebec City came up with a brilliant idea: organize events inspired by the classic TV game show Génies en herbe (“Reach for the Top” was the English equivalent).

The trivia tournament, which took place over a period of 13 weeks, helped build connections and generate discussions among residents. It was also a great mental exercise. Every week, teams of six engaged in friendly competition before audiences of 130 to 150 residents.

The initiative rapidly piqued the curiosity of some of the more reserved residents, who spontaneously

volunteered to join the competing teams. The competitors motivated one another. Some started learning the currencies of all the countries in the world. Others pored over the news for ideas of questions to ask and to refresh their knowledge of current events in preparation for the competition. The tournament quickly became an unmissable event, often continuing late into the evening and generating lively discussions between the participants and the audience.

Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Boileau, for this wonderful initiative—which, by the way, will be back next year!

Will the consumption of cannabis be permitted within residences? While we must respect the independence and freedom of choice of each individual, we must also ensure the comfort and well-being of all our residents. Therefore, we cannot ignore the potential for problems stemming from the use of cannabis, including odour. Accordingly, we’ve decided that the consumption of cannabis in the form of rolled cigarettes (“joints”) will not be permitted in residences. This rule applies both to common areas and to apartments. However, residents who have prescriptions for medical purposes may consume cannabis in other forms, such as transdermal patches, as long as it does not adversely affect the comfort and well-being of others.

Do your residences offer charging stations for electric cars? All residences by Le Groupe Maurice opened in 2015 or later are equipped with electric charging stations for vehicles. The stations are located within indoor parking areas. To claim a station, an additional monthly charge of approximately $30 applies on top of regular rental fees for indoor parking. For occasional charging needs, stations can also be reserved on a temporary basis (one month) for a fee.

For the fourth consecutive year, Deloitte named Le Groupe Maurice one of Canada’s 50 best managed companies, placing it in the Gold Standard category.

The awards program, which is celebrating its 25th year, recognizes excellence among Canadian-owned and managed companies. Hundreds of companies are considered, but only those with the strongest capacities, most innovative approaches and best management practices are chosen.

In April 2018, the leaders of the winning companies assembled in Toronto to take part in various activities organized especially for them. We asked Luc Maurice to share with us what he took away from the presentations.

SIMPLICITY WINSTo facilitate the lives of clients, technology and simplicity must go hand in hand. “Technology is the future, but we need to make sure technology makes life easier for us. That’s the goal of the applications and IT systems we’re developing to better serve our clients”, says Luc Maurice.

THE HUMAN FACTOR IS KEY TO SUCCESSClient satisfaction is an integral part of success, but organizations must also focus on their employees. “Since we’re a service company, these two complementary factors are very important to us. And because our clients live in our residences, we serve the same people day after day. Therefore, developing relationships based on trust and affinity between residents and employees is vital. If we want these relationships to be positive and beneficial, we need satisfied employees who believe deeply in our values”, adds Luc Maurice.

Les Mercuriades, a prestigious business competition, held its 38th Gala on April 19, 2018. This year, Le Groupe Maurice was honored in the Productivity Growth category.

Created in 1981 by Quebec’s federation of chambers of commerce (FCCQ), Les Mercuriades has become Quebec’s most prestigious business competition. Every year, it celebrates the innovation, ambition, entrepreneurship and performance of Quebec companies. Other winners include Agropur, Telus Québec and Bombardier.

SOFI, our software solution for residents’ health records, was what earned Le Groupe Maurice the award. The Mercuriades award recognizes the efforts

ONE OF CANADA’S 50 BEST MANAGED COMPANIES

of our entire organization, which is always ready to push the limits, raise standards and reinvent its approaches with the ultimate aim of improving quality of life for Quebec’s seniors.

“If something doesn’t already exist, we create it! Even in a regulated industry that has historically been connected to the public sector. We’ll stop at nothing to improve the quality of life of the elderly”, says Luc Maurice. “SOFI has undeniably enabled us to optimize operational processes, reduce the risk of error, empower and mobilize employees, facilitate communication and collaboration with all stakeholders and maintain up-to-date client records at all times. Ultimately, the residents stand to benefit most.”

“As I recall, it all started in May 1998. I was attending a meeting of the ARPAQ (the predecessor of the Quebec Seniors’ Housing Group/QSHG) at the Hôtel Gouverneur on Île Charron. That day was a turning point in the history of Le Groupe Maurice, as it was during that meeting that I decided to finally take action on my long-time dream of creating residences for seniors.” LUC MAURICE – PRESIDENT

Shortly after, Le Groupe Maurice was officially registered as the company’s name. The construction of the Résidences du Marché in Sainte-Thérèse also started in 1998, marking the beginning of an exciting adventure!

ELDER ABUSE: ZERO TOLERANCE!

Abuse against the elderly is sadly more common that many people realize. The United Nations marks World Elder Abuse

Awareness Day annually on June 15 to educate the public about this unfortunate reality. Le Groupe Maurice has longstanding

measures in place to prevent this problem from occurring within the walls of our residences. What are these measures?

Here’s an overview.

WHAT IS ELDER ABUSE?The United Nations defines elder abuse as “a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person.”

By 2030, all the countries in the world will see a considerable increase in their elderly populations, and consequently a rise in cases of elder abuse .

“It’s extremely important to look at elder abuse as a real societal problem and to find solutions now to stop it from occurring”, says Luc Maurice, Founder and President of Le Groupe Maurice. “Abuse against those who gave us life should never occur. That’s why, at Le Groupe Maurice, every effort has been made to prevent such situations in our residences.”

CODE OF ETHICSIn addition to having their rights and needs respected, every individual deserves to live in a safe, calm and peaceful environment. Le Groupe Maurice’s code of ethics, a copy of which is provided to every new hire, was devised to reflect the needs of residents and clearly set out the attitudes and behaviours to adopt when interacting with them.

“Respect toward residents is the foundation of our values and our corporate culture”, says Anne Grenier, Vice President, Human Resources. “It has guided our daily actions for as long as the company has been in existence, with the single purpose of contributing to the happiness of seniors. We all have the responsibility to always look after the residents’ welfare.”

Le Groupe Maurice’s code of ethics stipulates, among other things, the obligation to respect residents’ privacy, the obligation for all employees to maintain cordial relationships with residents and the supreme importance of protecting residents against any form of exploitation, abuse, intimidation and violence. BENEVOLENCE AND WELL-TREATMENTIn formulating the code of ethics, benevolence and well-treatment toward the elderly were emphasized. A list of key behaviours expected of all employees is also displayed in the common areas of care units in each residence. In this way, employees, friends and family are informed of the values advocated by Le Groupe Maurice.“Benevolence and well-treatment are often

key words that we use, as they’re a much more positive counterweight to the notion of abuse”, explains France Morissette, Assistant Vice President, Healthcare. “As nurses, we’re very involved in the daily lives and well-being of residents. That’s our job, after all! Since we work with a more vulnerable group, we always have to be attentive and on the watch for cases of abuse.”

MONITORING AND PREVENTION PROGRAMThere’s also a program in place to identify healthcare needs in each of our residences. The program involves voluntary annual meetings with all residents to evaluate the state of their physical and mental health. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about their reality and their day-to-day lives, and to detect any risky situations that sometimes lead to abuse.

The program also invites local police to speak to residents and meet their families. These exchanges help raise awareness of abuse and provide resources.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT“The mission of the Luc Maurice Foundation is to improve the well-being of seniors. Therefore, the fight against abuse underlies every decision made by the Foundation”, says Matias Duque, the Foundation’s Director.

Specifically, the Luc Maurice Foundation supports multiple initiatives including Un vélo une ville (community transport assistance for the elderly), the On sort-tu ? initiative and the Little Brothers organization, all of which fight social isolation among the elderly.

It also supports research by the Fondation de l’Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (IUGM), workshops by Clinique Juripop, which offers training to seniors, and the Tel-Écoute Tel-Aînés helpline, which lends an attentive ear to people in distress.

This involvement by the Luc Maurice Foundation aims to make a difference by supporting organizations that offer various types of assistance to seniors so they can enjoy a better quality of life.

“Standing shoulder to shoulder is what allows us to make things happen and really fight back against elder abuse”, concludes Matias Duque. “The well-being of seniors is what the Foundation is all about.”

NEW LEGAL PROTECTIONSOn May 30, 2017, Quebec adopted a new law aimed at fighting abuse against the elderly and other vulnerable adults. New regulations also entered into force on April 5 strengthening certification requirements for private seniors’ residences, which must now include anti-abuse provisions in their codes of ethics.

“It’s unfortunate that our society needed a law to react against elder abuse”, says Isabelle Nantais, Vice President, Legal Affairs at Le Groupe Maurice. “Our company didn’t wait for rules to be imposed. Our code of ethics has always been more comprehensive than what was required. We’re pleased to have a strict policy on display that is precisely worded and targeted so we’re able to respond swiftly to non-compliant actions.”

INTERIOR DESIGN– THE ART OF DETAIL

Chantal de Bellefeuille has been designing the interior decor of Le Groupe Maurice’s residences

since the foundation of the company in 1998. What’s the creative approach behind each of her

creations? Here’s our portrait of a true pioneer in the seniors’ housing community.

INTERVIEW WITH CHANTAL DE BELLEFEUILLEINTERIOR DESIGNER

For nearly 20 years, Chantal de Bellefeuille has been working closely with Luc Maurice to create interior designs for Le Groupe Maurice’s residences. It’s been a longstanding collaboration between two visionaries who share a commitment to listening to the needs of the elderly and evolving to meet these needs. Thanks to this commitment, the company’s projects bear a unique signature, with every residence designed to be a distinct space with its own identity.

Chantal, what’s the most noticeable difference between the kind of interior design you did for the Group’s first residences and what you do today? When I first started working with Le Groupe Maurice, only three people were involved in making decisions regarding the design of residences: Luc Maurice, François Tisseur, the company’s only employee at the time, and myself. Mr. Maurice always told me, “Chantal, what matters to me is for people to feel at home.” He wanted the residences to be more like houses. That meant no massive lobbies or large corridors like they make today, because that’s not what clients were looking for 20 years ago. This approach was continued through the first generation of Le Groupe Maurice’s residences, until the development of LES VERRIÈRES DU GOLF.

But in recent years, clients’ expectations have changed. The reasons why seniors choose to move into a residence are no longer all the same. In other

words, they’re not all leaving their homes because of health problems alone. More and more seniors are staying active longer and want to enjoy life to the best of their abilities. It’s our duty to offer them a living environment that aligns with their needs and expectations.

Where do you draw your inspiration when designing a residence? My creative approach changes from project to project. Often, the inspiration comes from the history of the place where the residence will be built. The building’s architecture also provides us with ideas.

For example, for LA CITÉ DES TOURS in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, we drew inspiration from the fact that the residence would be built on the site of a former Singer sewing machine plant that had existed on the exact same spot for a century. At ORA, located in the the Ahuntsic district, we were inspired by limestone because the site is the former location of the Miron limestone quarry. Its design is therefore more urban and characterized by shades of grey.

Why are some elements, like indoor gardens, present in only some residences but not others? The configuration of a building can give us possibilities that would prove unrealistic in other circumstances. I pay a lot of attention to architectural plans when planning the design of a future residence. And because Mr. Maurice knows his clientele very well and understands the local market for each project, he gives us guidelines. His ideas always influence what we create. That’s why an atrium, a walking route or an indoor garden may be present in some residences but not others.

What’s the difference between designing a residence for seniors and designing a more “standard” apartment building?Residences must be equally practical and aesthetically pleasing. The way we look at details is different because the details make an enormous difference for our clientele. For example, all flooring should be level, non-slip and made of non-reflective material.

In common areas, it’s important to have strong lighting, as people with cataracts need four times the normal amount of light. Furniture must be spacious, stable and made of a specific kind of fabric that must look elegant while being armed with antibacterial properties. Details like this are essential to the well-being of the elderly. There’s a fine line between aesthetics and practicality. Everything is in the small details.

How do you see the future of design for seniors’ residences? In my view, there’s been increasing demand for environmental awareness both in the construction of buildings and in the design of residences. I believe we’ll increasingly need to choose materials that have the least possible impact on the environment. The next generation of seniors will be a lot more aware of environmental issues, and they will expect the same of us. That’s why residences similar to CALÉO, a candidate for LEED Certification, will be very popular. It may be more costly to complete, but it’s extremely beneficial for everyone involved. Le Groupe Maurice is constantly on the lookout for technologies that can give seniors as realistic a glimpse as possible inside their future residence. For the ORA complex, currently under construction in Ahuntsic-Cartierville, virtual reality has raised the bar when it comes to real estate development for retirees

and to providing a new visual experience for clients.

For someone who’s considering moving to a residence, the ability to actually see the breathtaking views from each floor and in each direction is a major asset in deciding where to live. Whether you’re using a computer, a tablet or a smart phone, virtual reality lets you see and interact 360 degrees around the condo or apartment building that interests you.

What follows is a step-by-step explanation of how a multidisciplinary team brought our vision to life, creating the amazing interactive experience that Le Groupe Maurice is now proud to offer clients and future residents of ORA.

STEP 1: REAL IMAGE CAPTUREFirst, experts in aerial photography with drones visited the site, armed with a permit from Transport Canada. The drone, equipped with precise GPS positioning instruments, was flown by an experienced pilot. Using the project blueprints and a pre-established flight plan, the pilot positioned the drone in the exact locations needed to capture the desired views. For each floor, the pilot/photographer pivoted the drone’s camera to capture the entire panoramic view in a rapid series of images. It took at least a dozen photos to capture the 360-degree view from each floor.

STEP 2: IMAGE PROCESSINGThe photos were then given to a graphic designer to adjust the contrast and colours, and stitch the photos together to produce realistic panoramas. To make sure the immersive experience achieved

maximum impact, the graphic designer also had to edit out certain unsightly elements from the photos, such as cranes, which are hard to avoid on construction sites.

STEP 3: PROGRAMMINGOnce the images had been processed, access to the panoramic views had to be programmed in a logical way in order to create the online experience. The navigational features had to be programmed into the tool, linking the interface buttons to the interactive feature that lets the user change the viewing angle of the panoramic shots.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?Already used by several well-known companies and organizations, such as the Fondation Maurice Tanguay (for Maison Tanguay), virtual reality in real estate is booming, but what the future actually holds for this technology defies belief! The endless possibilities are limited only by our imaginations. You need only open YouTube and type “National Geographic 360 virtual reality” for a glimpse of the incredibly diverse and stunning locales that virtual reality can take us!

Inspired by THEIA, the Greek goddess of sight and piercing light, this new interactive information terminal is meant, first and foremost, to offer you a new perspective on your living environment. Equipped with a touch screen, THÉIA is there not just to inform you but also to interact with you and help with many of your daily activities.

MULTIPLE COMMUNICATION CHANNELSThere have always been a variety of communication channels in use at the residences, from bulletin boards to community channels, mailings and internal newsletters. Whether they’re managed by the residents themselves, by recreation professionals or by management, each of these channels delivers specific messages to a target audience. However, these messages lack overall harmony.

The residences by Le Groupe Maurice needed a tool that could improve the coherence, consistency and quality of the information provided while being fast and easy to centrally manage. In other words, a more modern approach was needed.

A COMMUNICATION TOOL THAT FACILITATES SOCIALIZATIONDeveloped especially to fulfill the needs of and to benefit seniors, THÉIA interactive information terminals meet Le Groupe Maurice’s need to improve the sharing of information and to better

inform and entertain residents while enabling them to participate, be heard and socialize through the emergence of new discussions.

“Today, digital technologies make it possible to set up accessible and enjoyable solutions that provide seniors with useful, interesting and engaging information. That’s why we seized this excellent opportunity to enter a new era of communication, enrich our valued relationships and strengthen the emotional attachment of residents to Le Groupe Maurice.” Rita Kataroyan, Vice President, Marketing and Sales

DYNAMIC INFORMATION THAT IS ALWAYS ACCESSIBLEA true all-in-one tool, THÉIA allows you to view daily menus, check the local weather and stay

informed of upcoming activities, movies and projects, among other features. It also lets you read the latest news and browse photo albums of events in which you may have participated. This new communication tool is updated in real time and features content that is targeted, adaptable and fully modifiable: an advantage not always shared by traditional forms of communication that rely on paper. In this way, THÉIA expands the communication tools at your disposal.

We invite you to consult THÉIA frequently, as the

information it provides is updated very regularly.

A MAJOR PROJECT IN SEVERAL STAGESAt the time of writing, the two initial stages of the project are already complete. All of the terminals have been installed and their content is also accessible on your TV set via the community channel (Vidéotron subscribers: tune in to channel 941).

The next step will be launching a mobile app for tablets (iPad and others). Thanks to this new tool, in addition to the content already offered, we want to give you access to even more useful information:

more news and photo albums, more comprehensive texts, archives and even new sections with entirely new content.

The app launch will be the highlight of the THÉIA project and will help bring us into the digital and connected age. We’re confident that this solution will enable us to interact even better in the future.

THE LUC MAURICE FOUNDATION

TAKES ITS FIRST MAJOR STEPS

The Luc Maurice Foundation, created in November 2017, has entered an intense development stage. It’s getting organized

from an administrative standpoint. It’s implementing its procedures and donations policy. Its board of directors is

engaging in consultations, and several months ago, Matias Duque was appointed its director.

prioritizes organizations whose work aligns with its mission of promoting the dignity, health and socialization of seniors, as we’ve observed that these three factors most influence their well-being. In other words, the concerns of the Foundation’s members go beyond the causes of seniors’ health conditions: they’re also dedicated to helping the elderly live long and happy lives.

According to current estimates, we will distribute approximately $2 million to various organizations in 2018. However, there is no annual target. The amount contributed each year is an important figure, but our primary mission is to meet the Foundation’s commitment of distributing $10 million over five years.

Le Groupe Maurice and Luc Maurice himself have been involved in philanthropy for 20 years now. By creating this foundation, Mr. Maurice wanted to make an even bigger impact. While remaining committed to offering financial support for projects and initiatives that align with the Foundation’s mission, we will do more than simply distribute money.

BUILDING SOLIDARITY FOR THE WELL-BEING OF SENIORS

Matias Duque has been involved with philanthropy since late 2004. His many years of experience in this field have earned him the qualifications to help charitable organizations successfully campaign for donations. His career path has also involved direct fundraising, as he believes it’s important to lead by example.

Matias is delighted to have been chosen to help achieve the vision of the Luc Maurice Foundation, which is Luc Maurice’s own vision first and foremost. He is working in close collaboration with the Board of Directors and with Mr. Maurice, who undoubtedly remains the Foundation’s most ardent standard-bearer.

A BUSY FIRST HALF OF THE YEARSince the beginning of 2018, the Luc Maurice Foundation has received a range of requests for support from a variety of organizations working to promote the health of seniors, including palliative care facilities, hospitals and organizations focusing on specific conditions like Parkinson’s, cancer and Alzheimer’s. In providing its support, the Foundation

“We want to offer added value. Luc Maurice believes that besides financial support, we should participate, build, inspire, inform, create connections and nurture partnerships in support of new charitable initiatives.”

DEVOTING ENERGY TO CREATING SYNERGIESThe Luc Maurice Foundation isn’t the only organization devoted to improving seniors’ quality of life. And that’s a great thing, say its members, who are actively working to identify all of the organizations involved, each in their own way, in promoting the well-being of our elderly. They want to meet the leaders of organizations who share a similar mission to become more familiar with their work. This will enable them to map out the entire network of social support available to seniors, giving other organizations opportunities for mutual support. These organizations can achieve a much greater impact working together than they ever can alone.

The Foundation’s team will also draw on Le Groupe Maurice’s network of partners to consult with healthcare specialists, psychologists and sociologists. In addition, we plan to meet with

geriatric physicians, gerontologists, researchers and academics to shed light on specific needs and contribute to innovative projects that align with the Foundation’s priorities. We want to open doors that lead to more and more opportunities, with the mutual support producing a domino effect.

Everyone involved in a good cause wants to make a difference. That’s why the Foundation also seeks to build partnerships between organizations and specialists. Our aim is to create relationships and promote collaboration. At the Luc Maurice Foundation, we believe that combining the energies of supporters, experts and donors will enable us to make an even bigger difference for our society.

“Why are we on this Earth? When we look back at our lives, will we be able to say we helped improve the lives of others when we had the chance? Did we help make people happier? Did we ensure everyone got a piece of the pie and was able to find genuine happiness? This is the foundation of a functioning society, and at the end of the day, everyone benefits from this expansion of the human spirit”, says Rita Kataroyan, Vice President, Marketing and Sales at Le Groupe Maurice.

THE MORE PHILANTHROPISTS WE HAVE, THE MORE WE ACCOMPLISH!We want to encourage entrepreneurs and other companies to choose a cause and support it according to their goals and abilities. We want philanthropy to go viral so we can better support our elderly and honour them for all they’ve done for us in the past and everything they can still do for our future.

We believe in offering financial support to people who have good ideas but lack the resources to turn them into reality. That’s the kind of philanthropy we strive to do at the Luc Maurice Foundation.

“When we distance ourselves from seniors, we remove important aspects of our own lives”, says Matias Duque.

SEEKING A CAUSE TO CHAMPIONThe Foundation has not yet undertaken active fundraising and does not plan to do so in the near future. We may eventually run a public campaign for donations if a promising project emerges that requires more substantial investment. The Luc Maurice Foundation is part of a network of philanthropic organizations. It is not a service centre. In some ways, it is similar to the Centraide, which distributes funds to various organizations, the difference being that the Luc Maurice Foundation supports issues specifically affecting the elderly. The Foundation is a resource that organizations can turn to in order to obtain financial support.

The aim is anything but to compete with existing organizations.

THE FUTURE LOOKS PROMISINGThe Luc Maurice Foundation will continue supporting organizations working to increase the life satisfaction of seniors, leveraging Le Groupe Maurice’s established network of partners. We’ll also continue efforts to promote philanthropy in

the noblest sense of the word. We’ll communicate with the residents of Le Groupe Maurice’s residential complexes and with those who collaborate with the Foundation to pass on ideas and report on the advancement and results of initiatives. At the end of this development-heavy year, we’ll produce an annual report and distribute it to all interested stakeholders.

Luc Maurice also has a major project lined up, one that he’s particularly passionate about. He’s hoping to build a multidisciplinary centre for the elderly. The idea is to create a one-stop shop that seniors can visit to socialize and use a wide range of services: in other words, a great place to grow old. This major project may end up taking a large share of the Foundation’s resources and contributions. We’ll reveal more as the project advances.

Anyone who’s remotely paying attention will often notice elderly people sitting alone by a window, on a park bench, on their balcony, or in an emergency room. We tend to forget that their life partner or best friends may have already passed on. We don’t necessarily stop to think that some of them never had children, meaning they won’t be surrounded by busy little ones in their golden years. And since they’re retired, they no longer have the chance to catch up with coworkers around the coffee machine.

Fortunately, we also see seniors who are loved and supported. We see them laughing with their peers.

We see them playing active roles in society. We see them socializing and taking part in a variety of different activities. At Le Groupe Maurice, we’re aware of the devastating effects that isolation can cause, and we’re doing everything in our power to prevent it.

HUNDREDS OF SENIORS CAME OUT FOR A COFFEE THANKS TO THE “ON SORT-TU ?” MOVEMENTLe Groupe Maurice is very proud to have sponsored the first edition of the major intergenerational movement “On sort-tu ?”, which took place across Quebec between May 12 and 19 as part of a full

TO BREAK THROUGH THE ISOLATION

week of activities intended to shine a spotlight on isolation. What’s not to love about this great idea of suggesting that people invite their single neighbours out for a cup of coffee?

Organizations, community centres, seniors’ homes, public and private companies, citizens and municipalities were all asked to organize activities to encourage seniors to get out of the house, meet new people and just enjoy a change of scenery. The residences by Le Groupe Maurice also got involved, offering various special initiatives for residents and creating wonderful moments of sharing and social interaction.

ISOLATION IS A MAJOR SOCIAL ISSUEAccording to the National Seniors Council and the Little Brothers organization, social isolation not only leads to health problems and malnutrition, but also increases the risk of depression, chronic fatigue and memory loss.

The statistics also clearly show that action is needed to prevent isolation, since 34% of Quebecers aged 75 and over see their families only a few times a year (Le Bel Âge, Léger 2017). What’s more, 40% of these people live alone, and in 40 years’ time, almost one third of the Quebec population will be aged 65 and over (ISQ 2008 and 2011).

THERE’S NO SUBSTITUTE FOR PERSONAL CONTACT“Older people are becoming increasingly comfortable using the Internet, which is great. They send emails, have Facebook profiles, and video chat on Skype. The Internet is a powerful tool for making people feel less alone, but there’s no substitute for the touch of a hand. Nothing can replace a heartfelt hug. There’s nothing better than actual human contact”, states Marie-Michèle Del Balso, Senior Vice President at Le Groupe Maurice.

Le Groupe Maurice is pleased to support initiatives like “On sort-tu ?”, which perfectly reflect of its core values and beliefs.

“We’re honoured that the team at Le Bel Âge asked us to sponsor this movement, because isolation can have such harmful effects on our health, and especially that of seniors. Beyond raising public awareness, we need to take concrete actions to encourage human interaction. It’s part of our DNA”, concludes Judith Neveu, Marketing Director at Le Groupe Maurice.

WHAT IS MAÎTRE D AND WHAT DOES THE NEW CARD LOOK LIKE?Maître D is a software originally designed for restaurants; you may have seen it before at St-Hubert or La Cage. This software, which is also the ideal solution for our residences, allows wait staff to take your order electronically on a tablet and send it directly to the kitchen. The new card, which will gradually replace the paper coupons, will be available in all residences by fall 2019. The same size as a credit card, it will fit easily in your wallet. It also features a small hole so you can attach it to your keychain.

Don’t worry: you’ll get all the details about the launch of Maître D at your residence during an official launch event organized especially for you.

WHAT’S THE POINT OF THIS CARD?Each resident will be given a card in their name. This new system, which comes with a great deal of advantages, will revolutionize dining room service, not to mention noticeably increase efficiency in the kitchen. With just a few clicks, your server will send your order to the chef, in real time and in chronological order. Wait staff won’t have to deliver orders to the kitchen anymore, meaning they can spend more time attending to you. This system also reduces errors, since each order is linked to a specific

resident, and all details, previously written by hand, will now be clearly legible. Finally, since the card acts the same way as a prepaid card, it’s very easy to use.

HOW DO I USE AND RELOAD THE CARD?Each resident will receive a free card in their name, which they can take to reception to load with prepaid meals. The meal coupons that residents currently have can be transferred onto the card. The meal card is used like a simple prepaid card. Just show it to the server, who will swipe it through the card reader on their tablet, and you’re all set!

Cards can be reloaded at reception with the meal plan chosen by the resident. For example, for residents who purchased a meal plan with their lease, these meals will be automatically credited to their card.

Residents will still be able to buy individual meals by ordering the desired number of meals at reception. They will also still be able to buy meals for visitors.

Le Groupe Maurice remains committed to providing the best service to residents, and the meal card is an example of our desire to make dining at our residences an even easier and more enjoyable experience.

“Le Groupe Maurice has always been committed to the well-being of residents, and strives to offer personalized, attentive and impeccable service. This is precisely what

motivated us to implement Maître D in all our residences.”MARC OUIMET – ASSISTANT VICE-PRESIDENT

Fresh Tradition, Le Groupe Maurice’s new vision of fresh cuisine at its residences, was introduced last fall and is now firmly established at our 27

residences. Here’s a brief history of this new initiative, which has put smiles on many

faces in the nearly eight months since its launch.

It’s been more than two years since the vision behind what would eventually become Fresh Tradition first emerged at Le Groupe Maurice. Initiated by Marc Ouimet, Assistant Vice President, Operations and Related Services, and Maurice Chartrand, Food Service Manager, the idea would revolutionize the approach to food of every single kitchen at Le Groupe Maurice residences.

First stepsLe Groupe Maurice’s food service division initially prepared a harmonized directory of the products

and suppliers the company preferred to work with going forward. In line with the Group’s values, the initiative was intended to boost efforts to select only the best products.

This shift in approach can be seen in the greater emphasis placed on homestyle cooking, which is meant to appeal to the nose, the eyes and the taste buds. This focus on traditional cuisine and fresh ingredients was the inspiration behind Orientation fraîcheur.

“Our sense of taste has a memory. We might taste something and suddenly recall the things our mother or grandmother used to make. It’s similar to experiences with music: you’ll hear a tune

and instantly remember your childhood. The principle behind Fresh Tradition is similar. It’s meant to inspire

joy in eating by reconnecting people to experiences they had when they were younger.”

MARC OUIMET - ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT

The specificsTo evoke the cuisine of yesteryear, we needed to prioritize fresh and seasonal ingredients, as these formed the basis of traditional cooking. For example, Quebec strawberries were chosen over berries grown in California, even if they were more costly. Fresh and seasonal products have made a huge difference in taste, greatly enhancing the dining experience of residents. And the experience of our residents will always be our top priority!

“Meal times are extremely important to Le Groupe Maurice. It’s not just about consuming food. Sitting down with other people and socializing while enjoying a meal is crucial to the well-being of residents”, says Maurice Chartrand. “The chefs also come out of the kitchen to talk to the residents. So besides eating, the dining room experience makes an enormous difference in people’s lives, especially when they’re alone. Fresh Tradition is all about making this happen.”

“Cooking simply means taking an ingredient and turning it into an emotion. We want

residents to be happy, all the time”MAURICE CHARTRAND - FOOD SERVICE MANAGER

The finer things in lifeThe vision behind Fresh Tradition, first and foremost, is to offer residents an enjoyable experience, a commitment that aligns with the epicurean values of Le Groupe Maurice. The goal is to prepare food that is both delicious and healthy. Everything is made in the kitchen, from the broths, to the sauces, the soups and even the desserts. By using raw ingredients instead of processed or pre-prepared foods, we can control levels of salt, sugar and fat.

“Cooking simply means taking an ingredient and turning it into an emotion. We want residents to be happy, all the time”, adds Maurice Chartrand.

It was an appreciation for the finer things in life that drove Le Groupe Maurice to adopt the vision of Fresh Tradition in its kitchens. Its enthusiasm for “returning to the land” inspired it to use foods that are anchored in our memories to create delightful emotions with each bite.

“I’m proud to say that the dining experience is now part and parcel of Le Groupe Maurice’s image. We can truly tell ourselves: mission accomplished!” concludes Marc Ouimet.

Throughout our lives, our interests, passions and knowledge form a big part of our identities. When we retire, these elements take on an even bigger role in our daily lives. To help us learn more about what you love, we’ve set up a new tool at all Le Groupe Maurice

residences. Introducing your Leisure Profile!

Our residences’ recreation professionals are responsible for planning activities that will inspire and interest you. But their role goes beyond organizing social activities at the residences. They are dedicated to helping you enjoy yourself and meet new people, whether or not you choose to participate in organized group activities.

Because fighting isolation among residents is a top priority for Le Groupe Maurice, the role of recreation professionals is as important as that of nurses. They take an active part in promoting your health and happiness by facilitating socialization, and participating in leisure activities contributes significantly to a healthy state of mind.

THE LEISURE PROFILETo achieve these outcomes, the recreation professionals at every residence must be familiar with your interests and be able to suggest activities you’d find enjoyable. But how do we find out what truly inspires you? The Leisure Profile was created for this exact purpose.

It’s based on a questionnaire covering various topics. Your answers help us better identify your preferences, even if you choose not to participate in activities.

The questionnaire first asks what activities interest you. It then focuses on your preferences, like your favourite dish and genre of music. Finally, it asks some general questions about your career, education, etc. It’s not a participation survey but a questionnaire designed to better understand your interests.

“This tool lets us stay up to date about the preferences of residents, especially with the regular arrival of newcomers”, says Marianne Ruest, Recreation Advisor at Le Groupe Maurice.“Each resident’s profile is reflected in the overall result, which varies from residence to residence. The recreation schedule must be dynamic and flexible”,

she concludes.

MORE ABOUT YOU AND WHAT YOU LOVEThe Leisure Profile gives our recreation professionals a thorough understanding of the preferences of each individual living in our residences. Besides developing activities connected to your interests, they can also inform you of events and outings happening outside of your residence. So whether you prefer solo or group activities, it’s important to fill in the questionnaire so our recreation professionals can make suggestions based on your areas of interest.

ONGOING IMPROVEMENTSThe results achieved since the introduction of the Leisure Profile have been very positive. They have led to practical improvements, like at Le Gibraltar, where the exercise room was renovated and a personal trainer was hired based on the information provided by residents.

The Leisure Profile aligns perfectly with Le Groupe Maurice’s commitment to listening to residents so it can evolve to meet their needs, adapt its services

“Thanks to the Life History, it’s now possible to offer residents even more personalized attention. We can go beyond medical

care. Thanks to the information obtained, we know how to best interact with each individual, which makes their living

A TOOL THAT ADAPTS TO EACH INDIVIDUALThe Leisure Profile comes with a Life History created specifically for residents of Signature care units. Residents’ answers to the questionnaire—which can be completed with the help of nursing staff, family or friends if needed—help inform daily interactions and become particularly important when communication challenges arise.

To tell you about SOFI in more detail, we borrowed a few minutes of the precious time of France Morissette, Assistant Vice President, Healthcare at Le Groupe Maurice.

What’s the meaning of SOFI?SOFI is an acronym in French that stands for Soins, Organisation, Facilité, Intérêt (Care, Organization, Facility, Interest). It’s the name of a software solution we developed in collaboration with Telemedic, as

Meet SOFI, an innovative and scalable wireless platform that contains the healthcare records of all residents, alerts us of their physical and psychological condition, facilitates the day-to-day work of our caregivers and much, much more.

we were extremely eager to implement wireless health systems for our clients in order to improve monitoring, facilitate our work and cut down on paperwork.

Le Groupe Maurice has over 1,800 employees, including approximately 30 nurses, 280 licensed practical nurses and 430 caregivers who are on call 24/7. There’s an entire team enthusiastically at work serving the 10,000 people who live in our 27 residences.

To offer residents the best possible care, employees must get to know their families, local community service centres, doctors and pharmacists and work in close collaboration with them. To make this possible, we needed a way to give all caregivers access to important information with ease and at the appropriate time while respecting ethics and confidentiality rules.

We decided to innovate. We not only created a digital profile for every single resident, but also introduced electronic health records. The SOFI

digital platform brought us into the modern era. Thanks to this tool–which was developed in partnership with Quebec-based company Telemedic, and which we’re helping to enhance–all important information has become easily accessible, easily interpretable and more collaborative for everyone involved.

In what specific ways is SOFI useful for you?SOFI is the pillar of our healthcare operations. For example, we consult SOFI when we need to know who will be working with which residents, when we want to attend to a specific person’s needs and respect their preferences for how to start their morning routine, or when we want to know whether certain tasks have been completed or whether it’s normal for a resident to have blood pressure of 110 in view of their condition. SOFI provides us with the answers to these questions. It allows us to intervene if necessary.

“SOFI informs us rapidly of our residents’ health condition and allows us to provide compassionate care.”

This lets caregivers converse with them about things they care about and help them receive more compassionate care. In this way, digital technology is helping us be more present and engaged with our residents.

SOFI facilitates our caregivers’ work and makes it more enriching. As a result, we retain more employees and we’re able to attract new recruits. It’s in all the media: there’s a shortage of healthcare workers. That’s our biggest challenge. Thanks to SOFI, healthcare workers feel more valued. SOFI gives everyone a greater sense of belonging and responsibility.

What’s the future for SOFI?Medication is the leading cause of error in healthcare provision. Even today, interactions with pharmacies take place via fax machines. We want to change that: that’s the next step. We’re in the process of implementing e-prescribing so that prescriptions

written by doctors are sent to both the pharmacy and to SOFI in digital form. That is no small feat.

To improve compliance, we’re continuing to develop SOFI so it meets the specific requirements of all healthcare professionals.

Health is a concern for everyone. It’s often the first thing we wish one another when we gather to celebrate. We ask ourselves: what could we do to get to know our residents better, so they feel well and enjoy a pleasant life for as long as possible? Could we do something to ease the job of healthcare workers so they can provide not only the most professional care but also the most personalized care? We believe the answer is yes. That’s what motivates us every day. It’s what makes our work more meaningful. It’s what makes us proud.
