This document is intended to assist LANDesk® Management Suite administrators in

capturing a syspreped image of a Windows 8.1 computer with a Provisioningtemplate using IMAGEW.EXE v2 for use with LANDesk Provisioning.

This document covers the steps necessary to capture a Windows 8.1 image using

IMAGEW.EXE v2 to be used with LANDesk Provisioning. It also contains a quick

reference guide for experienced LANDesk administrators that just need a reminder

of the steps required for capturing the image.

This document is written with the expectation that the LANDesk Core Server has

been installed and activated.

This section contains the steps required to capture a syspreped image of Windows

8.1 using IMAGEW.EXE v2 with a provisioning template. It is intended to be usedby experienced LANDesk administrators as a reference and does not go into detail

on the process. The details will be covered later in this document. Following are

the steps required to capture the image:

1.

Create a provisioning template to capture the Windows 8.1 image.

2.

Install PXE Representative.

3.

Prepare the Windows 8.1 computer for capturing the image.

4.

Run SYSPREP.EXE to prepare the image for capturing.

5.

Add a Bare Metal Server entry for the computer to capture the image.

6.

Create a scheduled task for the capture template targeted to the Bare Metal

Server entry and start it.

7.

Network boot the Windows 8.1 computer to capture the image.

If PXE representatives have not already been installed, install a PXE

Representative on the subnet where the Windows 8.1 computer is located.

Instructions for installing a PXE Representative is in the LANDesk Console help

(F1) in the section titled "Deploy a PXE Representative". A PXE representative

can be installed on any computer that has the LANDesk Agent installed.

1. Install Windows 8.1 on a computer or get a computer that already has Windows

8.1 installed.

Note: Install the OS to the smallest partition possible so that the image can bedeployed to as many different hard drive sizes in the environment as possible.

IMAGEW.EXE captures all partitioned space.

2. After the OS is installed, configure the OS with any Company requirements.3. Install OS patches that are currently available as this will save you time inthe long run by not having to install them on multiple computers after the imageis deployed.4. Install all applications that are common to all users in the Company that thisimage will be deployed for their use.

Note: Do not install the LANDesk agent on the computer. The agent will beinstalled after the image is deployed.

SYSPREP.EXE is located in the Windows\System32\Sysprep directory on the Windows

8.1 computer.

In 9.6, the computer can be syspreped in Audit Mode without the Generalize boxchecked or it can be syspreped in OOBE mode with the Generalize box checked.

Select the options for sysprep and click OK to run it. When sysprep is finished,

the computer will shut down.

Note: Make sure the computer does not boot into the OS until after the image is

captured or you will have to run sysprep again.

Simple IT environments are a thing of the past. IT departments juggle too many

tools from too many vendors while facing pressure to cut costs, reduce risk and

boost productivity. Workers are adding smart phones and tablets to PC or notebook

use, dramatically increasing the number of endpoints and operating systems that

must be managed. Organizations need intelligent, integrated control over diverse

systems and devices.

Customers worldwide use LANDesk® systems lifecycle management, endpoint security

and IT service management (ITSM) solutions to simplify IT complexity and manage

mobility “mayhem;” discover, track and safeguard assets and endpoints; and enable

IT staff to improve service levels—all while reducing costs and requiring less

infrastructure.

An IDC study found that on average, LANDesk customers realized a three-year

return on investment of 698% for their deployed LANDesk® solutions—a nearly

sevenfold return. The average payback period to recover the initial investment

averaged a short 5.1 months.
