LCES NEWS Langley Christian Elementary School from the Principals Pen 2018 Gods past faithfulness gives us courage in the present and hope for the future Derwin L. Gray, Limitless Life Welcome back to a New Year at Langley Christian School! Hopefully, like me, you are looking forward with great excitement and anticipation, wonder- ing what is in store for us in 2018. As Christians, we understand that our God is Sovereign and leads us through new seasons of growth and experiences to make us more like Christ. These seasons may consist of challenge or grief, but may also consist of great joy. We must always remember that God is in total control and that no matter what we face, He is right there with us, leading us through and using each experience to impart wisdom, insight and understanding if we allow Him to. Moving into a new year also allows us to reflect on Gods faithfulness in the past so that we can move confidently into the future. God wants us to move assuredly through 2018, recognizing it as a year of new beginnings, new possibilities, and new plans. At LCES we have already welcomed new students into our school this month. We are preparing to hire new teachers to cover maternity leaves, and to meet next school year s needs. As you know the Principal Search Committee will also soon be an- nouncing the new principal to take my place when I retire at the end of this school year. Even in the midst of Judahs exile to Babylon, the prophet Jeremiah writes to the exiles from Jerusalem, reassuring them that they will not be in exile for- ever. I believe these words are also for us today. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and will bring you back from captivity.Jeremiah 29: 11-14a Things known and unknown are in Gods hands. 2018 God’s past faithfulness

gives us courage in the present

and hope for the future

Derwin L. Gray, Limitless Life

Welcome back to a New Year at Langley Christian School! Hopefully, like me, you are looking forward with great excitement and anticipation, wonder-ing what is in store for us in 2018.

Moving into a new year also allows us to reflect on God’s faithfulness in the past so that we can move confidently into the future.

God wants us to move assuredly through 2018, recognizing it as a year of new beginnings, new possibilities, and new plans. At LCES we have already welcomed new students into our school this month. We are preparing to hire new teachers to cover maternity leaves, and to meet next school year’s needs. As you know the Principal Search Committee will also soon be an-nouncing the new principal to take my place when I retire at the end of this school year.

Even in the midst of Judah’s exile to Babylon, the prophet Jeremiah writes to the exiles from Jerusalem, reassuring them that they will not be in exile for-ever. I believe these words are also for us today.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.”

Jeremiah 29: 11-14a

Things known and unknown are in God’s hands. There is no better place for them.

Blessings on our new year.

Mark your calendars!

Plans for this year’s intermediate musical (gr. 3-5) are well underway! Students have begun rehearsals and excitement is growing.

Basketball Club (Grades 4 and 5)

Boys and girls in Grades 4 and 5 will have the opportunity to play some basketball after school starting next month in the Elementary School gym from 3:00-4:15.

Grade 4 students will play on four Thursdays starting February 15, and Grade 5 students will have the choice between Wednesdays or Thursdays.

The Wednesday Grade 5 group will be divided into a boys team and a girls team and will play against other schools. In

addition to five Wednesdays starting February 7, the Grade 5 teams will also have one Thursday practice (February 8) and one Tuesday game (February 13).

Team games are only available for Grade 5s, however the Grade 5s can choose to join the Grade 4s on Thursdays if they'd rather not be as competitive.

Watch for a permission slip with more details coming home next week.

Re-Enrolment Forms

It’s that time of year again! An email was sent home earlier this week with instructions on how to log into the Parent Portal and fill out re-enrolment forms for the upcoming school year (September 2018). It is very important that you complete and submit the form for each of your children by JANUARY 31. This is required for students who are currently in Kindergarten to Grade 11 only. This form must be completed and returned for each student in your family to secure their space at LCS for the following school year.

Please check your email for instructions on how to login to the LCS Parent Portal and complete the re-enrolment form for each child for 2018. When you are logged in, please check that we have your correct family contact information including the church your family is currently attending. If your church is incorrect, please send an email to:

[email protected] and we will update this information for you.

Contact Lisa or Sandra in the LCS Central Office if you have any questions regarding how to complete the online form.

Grade Four students enjoyed an afternoon at Fort Langley. Through a variety of activities, we learned how the First Nations shared their knowledge of the environment with Europeans and how both groups of people interact-ed with each other during the time of the fur trade.

LIBRARY NEWS Construction will be resuming at the property directly to the west of our elementary campus. Please exercise extra caution when travelling between campuses either on foot or in vehicles. Your patience is appreciated.

January Theme – Planes, Trains and

Automobiles Theme – We are all aboard with excitement for this new year and our new theme. We have made paper airplanes and heli-spinners, shared a brief history of aviation and fun airplane stories. For the next two weeks we will ride the rails before hitting the roads and highways. Our music listening songs are also about planes, trains and long car rides.

Kindergarten children are now checking out

two books instead of one. This is a big and exciting step for them. All children in all grades are reminded to return their books weekly. An added reminder that the library will charge the cost of a missing or damaged book. We do not charge late fees.

Library Research- We are eager to dive into

research this month with the grade one classes and their animal research themes: bears(1G), penguins (1S) polar bears (1W) and a variety of Canadian mammals (1D). Thank you to parent volunteers who join us and without whom we would not be able to do these important activities. We are also looking forward to having a visit from a bear expert next week Thursday, Mrs. deGroot’s brother in law, Mike Ewald.

Reading Link Book Club- Reading Link is

off to a great start with a great group of committed children and book titles. We meet each Tuesday at lunch. We hope to have a date set soon, before spring break for our in-school challenge. Encourage your child in their commitment to be part of this group. It will be worth it!!

Family Literacy Day is Saturday, January 27. It is a day to remember and celebrate reading from breakfast to bedtime. LCS is committed to a strong literacy program and we encourage families in READING for the joy of it at every opportunity.

Grade four also had the pleasure of going to see the play, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, at the Waterfront Theatre. All grade 4 students read the novel, so it was a great opportunity to compare the book and the stage play. Carousel Theatre for Young People put on a lovely performance, enjoyed by all!

We would like to invite you to be a part of this year's Annual LCS Dinner + Auction on February 7th! Our Annual LCS Dinner + Auction is less than one month away and it is shaping up to be a FANTASTIC event!

Last year we raised a record setting $45,000! With those funds, we were able to give back to our community as well as support both immediate and long term needs within our school. We made a donation to the ALS society of BC, upgraded sound and media equipment for our chapels and community meetings as well as allocated two-thirds to the purchase of a second school bus. Bus shopping is currently underway and we look forward to reporting back to you when a purchase has been made!

This year, funds raised at the Dinner + Auction will once again be split.

One third will be retained to support smaller projects (student or staff lead) that arise throughout the year

The other two thirds will be used to purchase additional playground equipment for our elementary campus. As our school continues to grow, the need for more play spaces grows as well. The goal is to purchase more challenging equipment for our intermediate grades to utilize. This equip-ment will be placed on the south-east portion of our elementary school field adjacent to the swing set.

We are in need of:

donations of goods, services or experiences

items for class baskets

homemade desserts

volunteers

All the details regarding this event, including links to sign up or donate online, can be found at: http://www.langleychristian.com/lcsevents/ Mark your calendars and invite your friends; it's going to be a great night!
