People have always wondered what the future would look like. But to be able to know what is going to happen in the future, you must know the past. Know what events occurred, and who lived before us. What actually has taken us to where we are today and what has changed along the way.

In the past 150 years, the world has changed a lot. The world’s population is growing with such a speed, that we might not have the space for everyone in the future. We are still driven by the same needs as 150 years ago. Food, sleep, joy, the feeling of being appreciated and loved. This won’t change in the next 150 years. We all have needs, some more than others, but the fact is that those needs are growing faster than we can handle. Our demands are much higher than what we can supply, such as food, oil, water, etc.

We all have needs, some more than others, but the fact is that those needs are growing faster than we can handle. Our demands are much higher than what we can supply, such as food, oil, water, etc.

Over the last 150 years we have made a lot of inventions, but have they really made a big difference in those years?

In general, the inventions for the last 150 years have been a human strive for freedom and communication, a way to make our lives easier and be able to get in control over time and our world.

We will see in just 50 years, how the

Candy, every person’s guilty pleasure, and the simple food item that can say so much; chocolates for Valentine’s Day, Peeps on Easter, and candy canes near the winter holidays are a few things that are represented by the sweets we eat. Every candy bar we see in the store has a story behind it, and if we take the time to read, you may see there is more than what meets the mouth.

Candy canes are very popular during the winter. There are a few different stories about the history of candy canes, there are more religious viewpoints of their creations. They first started around the seventeenth century when European-Christians began to adopt the use of Christmas trees as part of their Christmas celebrations. Candy canes started out just plain white, and then decorators started adding red flowers to decorate them more. The stripes weren’t added until about fifty years later although we never figured out who first added the stripes. Around the time the red stripes were added the peppermint flavor was too, to give the candy a little more flavor to appeal to people.

The Hershey’s company originated with candy-manufacturer Milton Hershey’s first made its first chocolate as a coating for their

transition from being an oil-dependent society will be. New medicines and cures will save lives, the first steps in the development of artificial intelligence , continued exploration of the space, more people will die from AIDS, hopefully a better world for poor people in the world, challenges in the climate change, and new inventions that make life a little easier and entertaining for some.

As we are slowly running out of oil, some oil experts expect that we will start to use more coal, therefore im-pacting global warming even more.

According to scientists around the world, human activity is directly related to climate change. The global warming problem is caused mainly by a population problem. It is proved that if we limit man-kind, it means more population control.

Though, population control is a ta-boo subject in nearly every nation ex-cept China. The “One Child Policy” in China, officially restricts married ur-ban couples to having only one child.

Whether the “One Child Policy” is ef-fective or not can be discussed, but it certainly works some places in China.

Leading anthropologists, who have stud-ied societies in collapse, recommend that you live in a small rural village a long way away from any major population centers. Those small communities have a high-er chance of survival, as they are more self-sufficient rather than bigger cities.

Here, you should live by the “One Child Policy,” and restrict yourself to be as self-sufficient as possible.

Also, the global warming problem seems to be a flood problem, so keep well away from coastlines and don’t set up your little farm on a floodplain as water could be a serious problem.

So remember to turn off the lights, shut the water off and be responsible for those who will be taking over for generation on earth.

History of Candy

What will the world look like in 150 years?

caramel candies. The chocolate became wildly popular so they opened a factory in Lancaster, Pennsylvania named Hershey Chocolate Company; the 1900 they factory was mass producing their chocolate bars. Chocolate was originally a luxury item for the rich but Hershey made his delicious treat affordable to everyone. These chocolate treats were almost an instant success, forcing the owners to purchase a larger factory so they could increase production.

M&M’s creator first got the idea from GI soldiers; they were eating chocolate pellets with hard sugar outsides. They were first sold in 1941, and became popular World War II soldiers. They were produced in tubes of candies. They changed to their signature brown bag in 1948. When M&M’s first came out they were only brown later the colors red, green and yellow were added.

Each different candy that touches your tongue has a unique taste as well as a unique history. It would take just a few short minutes to find out how the candy you’ve just eaten came to be. Is it important? No. Can you learn some cool new things about your favorite candies? Yes.

Taking a look behind the wrapper

The majority of us enjoy candy. We eat it for puerly because of how well it tastes. We enjoy the simple flavors it offers us and the way it seems to make everything better when we’re sad.

Operation Broken SilenceImagine yourself being taken advantage

of, exploited, and forced into a secret world that suffocates you and forces you to suffer in silence. This is a very true reality for 27 million people around the world; men, women, girls, and boys alike. Most people are not aware of this rising issue and how much of a common problem this is all over the world, in many different countries and societies.

This is referred to as human-trafficking or modern slavery. Modern slavery involves exploitation and deception, along with forced labor, services, and prostitution. Modern slavery has been recognized by the United Nations, as the problem has become much more serious and obvious in recent years due to the fact that 161 countries have been affected by human-trafficking worldwide and that number is only growing. The United Nations has also estimated that 700,000 to four million women and children are forced into the human-trafficking system each year. 80% of the enslaved are younger than 26 years of age and can be as young as six years old. In recent years, studies and statistics have reflected the rise and growth of human-trafficking and the numbers are only going up.

According to justinlong.org, human-

trafficking is the second largest and fastest growing criminal industry worldwide and 50% of those most commonly forced into human-trafficking are minors, or underage, just like you or me. Another sad and horrific fact: one person is trafficked into the United States every ten minutes, and every minute, one person is exploited somewhere in the world. These are just a few of the sad statics and an all-too-real reality for some.

Human-trafficking is a successful and high-paying business. It is successful because it is hard to connect and track down the underground network the human-trafficking systems have worked out ever so delicately. When a human-trafficker is first entered into the system, their boss automatically breaks their spirit to prepare them for future heartbreaks and the harsh, cruel world of human-trafficking. Doing this also makes it easier for the boss to sell the human-trafficker for a profit. It is estimated that human-trafficking brings in an estimated seven billion dollars annually and all this money goes right into the bosses’ pocket.

With all these statistics, you’d think it would motivate us to stand up and doing something about the injustice and indifference involved in this crime. For the men, women, boys, and girls involved in human-trafficking, everyday is a struggle and everyday, they cease to exist less and less. Those who are enslaved loose

Story by Halle Stichler

Human-trafficking; A fight for your lifetheir feeling of self-worth and no longer have self-respect or standards for themselves because they do not feel of importance and no longer have self-esteem.

Operation Broken Silence is an organization that works to help prevent and spread the word about human-trafficking, as well as give accurate details, facts, and information. They also work to help those who have been affected by human-trafficking and take a stand against the issue whenever possible.. The organization tries to get involved in the community and get others informed about the hardships and trials someone who is enslaved faces.

This new type of slavery is not a subject to take lightly, as it is a dangerous game to anyone involved. There are new victims everyday, living in fear, pain, and anguish and they will remain living that way until we stand up and fight for them. So many will never return back home and fulfill their life goals or dreams because of the decision made for them by others. of hatred, deception, and despair. It is our job to shed light on growing issues around the world and stand up for those who are too weak, and speak up for those who cannot do so themselves. As Benjamin E. Skinner once stated, “…this is no time to relax and fold our hands, because the grip of slavery is stronger than it ever has been—and it is growing.”

What is the Iowa Caucus and what does it mean for the election? The Iowa Caucuses are statewide, and

it’s a public going where the people show which candidate they’re rooting for, and why you should as well, it also gives good insight on what each candidate is about.

There are 1774 caucus sights across Iowa, so it’s in the candidates best interest to have a speaker at each site to sway voters at the last minute. After speeches, the ones in attendance vote on a piece of paper, and the results are given to the media. Here are the results of the Iowa Caucuses:

Don’t let this nice weather fool you, bad weather is on the way! Winter driving can get pretty dangerous even if you’re careful. The icy roads, the crazy holiday rush, and all the distractions on the road can make it hard to focus on getting to your holiday destinations. There are some things that you can do to do the best you can to stay safe for the winter.

According to weather.com there are many ways to stay safe while driving in winter conditions: reduce speeds, brake gently to avoid skidding, keep your head lights on, keep all windows clear, and don’t assume that your car will do all the work during bad driving conditions because it won’t. It is also a very good idea to have a few things prepared and in your car just in case of an emergency.

A few other safety tips are to know your route, always let someone know where you’re going so if you need help they know where you’re going, turn on your lights to increase vision clarity as much as possible, make sure you have good traction and have

Barack Obama believes that we won’t defeat a terrorist network by occupying Iraq.

Newt Gingrich believes it’s wrong to intervene in Libya, and we should covert action more effective.

Rick Santorum says we should stay in Afghanistan until security of our country is secure.

Ron Paul thinks we shouldn’t have war propaganda against Iran, we should learn from Iraq. He says radicals come to kill us because we occupy their lands.

Mitt Romney says we should leave Afghanistan when generals on the ground say so, and that we should disagree with Israelis in private, but stand with them in public.

Barack Obama’s view on taxes is that we need a policy that makes everyone pay their fair share, and that the wealthy shouldn’t get tax cuts.

Newt Gingrich thinks that Obama’s “balanced approach” is really saying that we should raise taxes. We should match the Chinese and have zero capital gains tax.

Rick Santorum says we should simplify tax code: just 5 deductions, which means everything else goes.

Ron Paul says he has never voted for a tax increase; and never will and believes that our country’s spending is the problem.

Mitt Romney’s opinion is that tax rates should be flatter & simpler but still progressive for now.

Romney- Believes teachers’ unions hurt student performance. Also thinks students should be pushed harder to meet performances of other countries.

Gingrich- Believes children should be paid as incentive to learn math and science, and we should ditch the multiculturalism and stick to learning more patriotic history.

Paul- Believes that in school prayer is not a federal matter, believes in opt-out system and disagrees with No Child Left Behind.

Perry- Believes in getting the best education, and doesn’t mind teachers using physical discipline.

Santorum- Believes school uniforms are good, and giving an education to the poor is a top priority.

Obama- Believes in student commitment to school and not dropping out, add 4.5 million dollars to college loans.

Barack Obama’s views on foreign policy are that “poverty causes terrorism” but they’re more educated. He believes US policy should promote democracy and human rights.

Newt Gingrich’s views are that we need a dramatically expanded use of statecraft (the art of government and diplomacy).

Rick Santorum’s views are that he doesn’t want to limit the President's power to impose economic sanctions.

Ron Paul doesn’t want to accept electronics from other countries. He believes foreign aid wastes billions, with unintended consequences.

Mitt Romney thinks that it would be acceptable for Iran to become a nuclear nation. He believes that if America doesn’t change their ways we will no longer be a superpower.

In Issue 5 of The Wire, results will be given, cut out this ballot, circle your candidate and take to room 401 or Logan Marada.

enough air, and if your parents suggest something don’t just act like it’s not important because it will most likely help you stay safe.

Teacher and Drive Tek instructor Ron Siske says his safety tips are “Slow down! It takes longer to stop when is icy and slick. Plan ahead because when the roads are bad it will take longer to get where you’re going. If you don’t have experience driving in bad conditions go to the parking lot and practice before you get on the road with other drivers. When asked what her thought was the most important thing to know when you’re driving in bad conditions he said “Don’t lock up your brakes if you start sliding, pump the breaks or you’ll lose your steering.”

When reading these winter driving tips keep in mind that you aren’t the only one these things could help, they can help the passengers in your car, or even other drivers. So don’t forget how important safety is because you’re late meeting your friends, staying safe IS important.

Soup Or Bowl?: Who will win Superbowl XLVI

Logan- New England- 27-21- The connection of Tom Brady to Rob “Da Gronk” Gronkowski destroyed Denver in their last game, and despite San Francisco’s stellar D, I think they will prove to be too much. Although the defense of New England has been put into question, one must question the offense of the 49ers; could Frank Gore break down in an injury like he does every year, or could Alex Smith be a bust like in past years.

Brook- New England 32-24- Jim Harbaugh has brought the 49ers into the Super Bowl hunt for the first time in a while. The Patriots are in the playoffs year after year, and they have one of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game in Tom Brady. The Patriots will score a lot whenever they feel like it and I believe that they will break down the defense of the 49ers to win their 4th Super Bowl under Brady.

Logan- Baltimore: 13-10- As I said before the defense of the Ravens could win the Super Bowl on their own, and win they’re playing a quarterback who easily makes mistakes when blitzed, it’s almost like handing them the game. The play of quarterback Joe Flacco is put into question, but the play of Ray Rice has compensated for the less than par passing game, I think the Ravens win off of another Billy Cundiff field goal.

Brook- New York 13-7- The Giants will win in this defensive battle. The Ravens will make the Giants offense struggle, but I believe that Eli Manning will show up and Joe Flacco will simply not. The Giants defense has emerged in these playoffs as they always seem to. It might not be the most exciting game, but it will surely be remembered as one of the best defensive battles of all time.

Logan- Baltimore: 20-14- The Ravens already beat the 49ers in week 12 and it proves that big brother knows best. Older brother John Harbaugh dominated on the defensive end in their match up earlier over his young brother Jim Harbaugh. I think this will be a very close match up, but the defense of the Baltimore Ravens could single-handedly win the Super Bowl on their own.

Brook- San Francisco 27-21- The 49ers defense and running game come up big in the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens will try their best, and their defense will come to play, but their offense will get to them as the 49ers win the Super Bowl.

Logan- New England- 17-14- Revenge is so sweet, at least when remembering the upset of the 2007 Super Bowl it is. The Giants had taken an almost exact same path to reach the Super Bowl that year, but the Patriots still have it on their mind, and you have to question the consistency of the Giants in every game. It’s hard to say what Eli Manning will show up, the one who led them to a routing over the NFL best Green Bay Packers, or will it be the Eli who lost four straight games from week 10-13?

Brook- New York 17-14- The Giants have taken a very similar route this year as compared to their Super Bowl year in 2007. When Eli Manning shows up, the Giants will win on every single Sunday. The Patriots have the potential to win on any Sunday as well, so this game will come down to defense, and I believe that the Giants have the better defense. Does the score look familiar at all? Yes, it is the same score as the 2007 Super Bowl between these two teams.

Story by Logan Marada

Tim Tebow is 8-4 as a starter in the NFL this season. He has led the Denver Broncos to five 4th quarter and overtime comeback wins, and helped the Broncos to win first place in the AFC West division. Time after time after time announcers, fans, coaches, and other players have said he can’t do it. But he just keeps winning, pulling through, doing the impossible. People are wondering, “When will he lose?” “What makes him so good in the 4th quarter?” “What makes him so average the first three quarters?” All of these are questions that only Tim Tebow can answer.

Ever since Tebow has taken over for the 1-4 Broncos, last place in the AFC West, Denver has had a sense of hope. While Tebow may not have the greatest arm in the league, as the Broncos are 31st in the league out of 32 teams at passing offense, he seems to pull through when it counts: The 4th quarter. In the final seven minutes of games and overtime during his 6 game win streak, Tebow had Quarterback Rating of 96.4 out of a perfect 100. Tebow’s losses are to the

Detroit Lions, the New England Patriots, the Buffalo Bills, and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Ever since high school, people have been telling Tim that he can’t make it as a quarterback. In high school Tebow even won a game with a broken leg! Every time the two-time Heisman Trophy winner gets criticized, he gets better and proves them wrong. People’s criticism fuels him to be the best he can be, along with his biggest idol: Jesus Christ. After a big touchdown and before and after every game Tebow kneels down and prays to his lord. This has become very popular around the world and it seems that everyone is “Tebowing.”

Tim Tebow’s regular season record at 7-4 is the reason the Broncos got to play the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the playoffs, where Tebow would get his first playoff win 29-23 in, of course, overtime. Tim Tebow may or may not be a “star” quarterback in this league, but there is one thing for sure: Tebow can win.

Occupy Wall street is a nationwide movement, powered by the citizens, the marching, protesting, tenting and walking, started September 17th 2011. This massive group has swept across the states, to over 100 cities. Occupy Wall Street got the title, from the first settlement on New York City’s Wall Street. Economic inequality, greed, financial services, and the difference in wealth are some of the few reasons Occupy Wall Street members keep moving. They have planted themselves on streets, and public areas,

I decided to fight for freedom, and not the American Dream.

I’m ashamed to be an American, where I am anything but free, and I won’t forget the men

who lied, and took that right from me. The time is now.

We all played by the rules, and we were robbed blind. We sat back in blissful ignorance, and let them do this to us. We are sick of playing

these Greed-driven rules.

Never capitulate. Never stop fighting. When you fight, you win.

although they have the right, they have cost the Police Department over $5 million dollars in overtime, crime has risen, and the amount of people getting arrested has increased. This also isn’t just a small movement, its masses over 20,000 people camping out on streets, with their kitchens, first aide tents, and bonfires, during the day, these people are parading through the streets, buildings, and anywhere they think they can get their point across.

Walking the Streets”

““ ”“ ”“ ”

In lieu of the recent “Occupy” movement, The Wire staff thought we would see what our students would change about Lewis Central High School. Most of the responses were about the food’s lack of variety, but others had a little more substance. Some brought valid points that could be addressed.

“It’s the 21st century. We all need laptops.” Says sophomore Tony Rew. As a new addition to our school, Tony was overwhelmed by the size of the school compared to his old school, Saint Albert. “We had laptop carts with enough computers for a classroom set.”

An anonymous contributor even called for dodge ball to be sanctioned as an official school sport. With the addition of a power lifting team to our roster, changes are being made, due to the cry of students.

Bailey Penner, another sophomore here at LC, asked to be added as an additional or even the only school mascot, instead of the Titan. Change the mascot? Would giving one student the power to be the mascot raise school spirit, or deter from the legacy of the Titan? Bailey and the board could compromise and he could be the “spirit of LC” or be inside the mascot.

Another problem students are having is

with our hallways. “Expand the hallways! There is too much traffic.” “Enforce the PDA rules!” “Appropriate use of cell phones!” “More color and better carpets in the hallway!” Many students have called for more school spirit in the hallway. one student even has a solution to the cramped hallways. “Have half of the classes get out 2 minutes early, and the other half get out at the bell so the hall ways wouldn’t be so crowded.”

One individual even went so far as to blame the students for being too tired at the beginning of the day, “I think it’s fine. Grumbly, complaining, whiney people who don’t sleep because they party all night can deal with it.” One student countered with, “School should start later and get out later, with classes retaining their current length.” Many issues have two sides, and each side has good reasons for each.

Compromises can be made and things can be changed here at LC. We don’t need a undertaking quite as broad as the Occupy Movement, but having a valid argument and reasons for something to change, as well as a way to fund the project, can get you a long way.

What better way to start off your New Year than with New Years Eve?

So many scenarios in this enjoyable mov-ie make it all the more exciting. Through-out the whole movie you catch yourself trying to tie them all together, come to find out it isn’t at all what you expected…

Simply jetting around Manhattan on a scooter are a messenger and a frumpy secretary. She has the tickets to the next best party and a list of resolutions. She’ll hand him the tickets if he can help her cross every item off of her resolution list.

The chief of the Times Square ball-drop is faced with a malfunction on the fateful night, also caught up in what New Years truly means to her.

A dying cancer patient just wants to see the ball drop one last time. And with him comes the nurse who sits by his side as he tries to survive his final new year.

Of course there is a rock star. He’s sup-posed to play at both a popular ball in Brooklyn and Times Square on the same night while trying to win back the beauti-ful blonde, coincidently also the ball’s ca-terer, who he ran out on a year earlier.

A single mother chases her teen-aged daughter into the midtown Manhattan madness when her offspring runs off to meet friends after being told not to do so.

The scrooge of the movie, a New Year’s-hating comic-book artist, gets trapped in an elevator with a gorgeous neighbor on track to her big break back-ing the hit rock star in Times Square.

Expectant parents are trying to win the prize for having the first baby of the New Year, but they’re competing with an equally pregnant and equally competitive couple.

Valentine’s Day. New Year’s Eve. Mar-shall’s got potential projects lined up for years to come. There’s still Christ-mas, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Me-morial Day, Labor Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and even Secretary’s Day.

Overall I would give it an A. It was tear-jerking, funny and it really made me think. Although it may not be a ‘childrens’ movie I would still say it is good enough for all to see.

We don’t re-ally think about New Years Eve, but while try-ing to come up with something to say in front of millions of people, one of the characters thought well. “It’s suspended there to remind us before we pop the champagne and celebrate the New Year, to stop and reflect on the year that has gone by. To remember both our triumphs and our missteps - our promises made, and broken. The times we opened ourselves up to great ad-ventures - or closed ourselves down, for fear of getting hurt. Because that’s what New Year’s is all about: getting another chance. A chance to forgive, to do better, to do more, to give more, to love more. And stop wor-rying about ‘what if’ and start embracing what would be. So when that ball drops at midnight - and it will drop - let’s remember

to be nice to each other, kind to each oth-er. And not just tonight but all year long.”

The Devil Inside was the surprise winner in this weekend’s box office at $34.5 million. The low budget film received many mixed reviews. The main character, Isabella Rossi is investigating her mother’s (Maria Rossi) case 20 years after it happens. Her mother brutally murdered three people during an exorcism that was not cleared by the church. Maria was sent to an asylum in Rome, near the Vatican. Basically Isabella travels to the asylum and has two priests perform an exorcism on her mother. Her mother had multiple demonic possessions, where more than one demon had control of her body. So they perform the exorcism and the demons travel to one of the priests, then to Isabella, then to the guy that films for Isabella a little later in the movie. Conveniently, the camera man gets possessed while he is driving a car and boom, they get in a fatal car crash to end the movie. I thought that the movie was extremely average until the last two minutes, where it was absolutely awful, and if you haven’t seen it already don’t. It is absolutely NOT worth your time and it has the worst ending to any movie I have ever seen. SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!! Everyone dies! Now you don’t need to watch it.

Everyday Struggles: Depression This series will focus in on everyday problems and struggles that a young adult can encounter. In each edition, I will try to shine light on a new subject, or in this case, “struggle.” It is my hope that, through this series, I will be able to bring awareness and shine light on issues that impact teens everyday.

I lay in bed, hoping and praying that this will just end. “This” is referring to my life. My life that is full of an overwhelming amount of emptiness and despair. All other emotions have deserted me and I have become so alone since this all started.

Sadness, despair, emptiness. These are the words I can use to best describe how I feel at all times. Every day is a challenge, a struggle. Every day I seem to fall deeper into the hands of my depression. I have a hard time coping with everyday life and the pressures and expectations everyone has forced upon me. It’s hard for me to live up to everyone’s standards of how they think I should be, which makes me feel like I’m a failure. And besides all of that, the hurt of my past is something that continually haunts and taunts me and I can’t move onto my future when I’m caught up in the memories of yesterday. The promise of a better tomorrow is the only thing that kept me going at one time, but I’ve spent far too much time waiting for there to be a better tomorrow and I’ve given up on that idea.

My name is *Quinn. I am a senior in high school, hoping to just get through the last part of my final year of high school. I had friends—lots of them, but since the start of my depression, I’ve slowly been removing myself from the social scene and trying to isolate myself from the world around me. I feel as if I’m the only one I can trust in the world, because the few I have trusted throughout my lifetime have let me down.

Freshman year marked the start of my depression. I was a lost girl walking through the halls, trying to find all my classes and figure out how to open my locker, which was a foreign concept to me. And then came a boy, who walked up to me, lending a poor freshman a hand. We made small talk as we walked through the halls and he showed me around. “I’m *Jake,” he said, finally introducing himself after a half-hour talk. “And you are?” I whispered my name, quiet and feeble, “Quinn.” I believe that at that exact moment, he realized how easy of a target I would be. I was naïve, naïve that there could be such a person out there who could deceive and manipulate as easily as he could. And from then on, he took a surprising interest in me, and within the first month of entering my freshman year, I was dating a senior.

When I was with him, I felt something I had not felt in a long time—a sense of love and security, and a feeling of worth and being wanted and adored. I had never cared about boys before, and it never occurred to me that one might actually be interested in me. For the first four months, our relationship was the greatest thing I’d ever experienced—love and being loved unconditionally back. I felt like it actually gave me a purpose in life and like, for once, I was a part of something, a part of “us.” Knowing how I felt about him and feeling the pressure from both him and our group of friends from school, I more-than-willingly showed my love for him.

Soon after, our relationship began to crumble and when all was said and done, I found out who

the real Jake was. He was not the handsome, charming, and kind boy that I thought he was. He was conceited, deceitful, and the ultimate manipulator. And I immediately hated myself for letting someone take advantage of me and play with my emotions, as well as not considering the warnings that so many people gave me, though I didn’t even have a chance. He was a senior and the first boy who’d ever taken a real interest in me. I felt ashamed; like I was just a game he wanted to play. He saw a vulnerable young girl who was waiting for someone special to come along and change things for her. He had decided that he was going to be that person to do just that and because of him, I lost my innocence and livelihood and now live with the guilt and shame.

Any sign of love I was quick to grasp because, since the mere age of eight, I had a complicated and complex relationship with my family, which resulted in me feeling unloved and unwanted. At age eight, my parents divorced one another due to “irreconcilable differences,” but the truth behind that was that they no longer loved each other. Within six months, my father had packed up his things, taking my sister with him and leaving my mother and I to pick up the pieces. I cannot even describe how much pain and resentment I felt, and still feel for my dad. The day he left was one of the hardest days of my life, watching him load up his truck, with my sister in the front seat, and just waving goodbye. I remember him saying that he was sorry that he was going to be leaving me behind and making me stay with my mother, but taking my sister. The anger and disownment I felt was so overwhelming. Did he think that saying he was sorry would make up for how depressed and neglected I felt?

Two years later, my father remarried, settled down with his new wife, and then discovered that they were expecting. Suddenly my estranged sister decided there was no longer any room for her either and showed up at our front door step. When my sister came back from my dad’s, she had changed drastically. She was not the sister I had had sleepovers with as a little girl, or the sister I would spend hours talking to. She seemed distant and wanted nothing to do with me; it seemed that she wanted to forget about our old life as much as any of us did.

Around the same time my father got married and my sister came home, my mother met a man by the name of *Nathan, who is now my stepfather. At the end of my seventh grade year, my mother married him, and with him came a new stepbrother. Suddenly, I became the odd man out. My mother began to forget that I even existed; if it wasn’t for the fact that I still ate dinner with them, I’d think she wouldn’t even know I still lived there. I began to feel as if I didn’t even matter to my mom, which hurt me deeply because my mother was the last person I had to rely on, and during the time that my father was gone with my sister, she had been the only reason I even had a reason to wake up in the mornings. Regardless of how life really was at the time, she had always tried her hardest to make

the best out of a bad situation and support us both with whatever she had and however she could.

As I lay here and contemplate taking my own life, the hardships I’ve encountered play over and over again. Everywhere I go, I feel this immense amount of sadness weighing me down and I know that right now, if I really wanted to, I could end it all. But then, as I prop myself up, which turns out to be a slow, painful process, I scan my room, suddenly feeling an overwhelming sense of love and security within the four walls decorated with pictures of my old family and friends, encouraging words, and everything that is simply me.

At that moment, something sparked inside me, telling me to get up and keep moving forward with my life. And since, I have become confident in the fact that I will prevail. Even in my darkest days, I can find some light. There will always be better days, and I keep that in my mind. Maybe that’s just my optimism speaking, but I do feel that someday everything will work itself out and that this is just a stage in my life that won’t last forever.

*All like factors are completely coincidental.

To Write Love On Her Arms

“You’re lazy. All you teenagers do is look around on Facebook, Twitter, and text on your phones.” The voices of grouchy adults speaking down us, and does this anger me? Well of course! I hate constantly being the generation spoken down to like we’re going

to fail because we’re involved with technology, video games, and social networking. I am here in defense, and here for the insight to tell you why we won’t fail, and why we can be a generation of success.

To nerd everyone out, science can provide the answer as to why our generation is misinterpreted as stupid, or too easily distracted with time-wasting things. (Facebook, Twitter, video games, etc.) Scientists’ studies show that the brain contains grey matter that houses the cell bodies and connections that carry messages through the brain. To put it in simpler terms, this grey matter is what causes distractions. It’s like if you were to walk through a buffet and look for potatoes, and you see all of these other items, which make you distracted and think more about them. So, with the expansion of technology and other things, it’s impossible for the human mind not to be distracted. So, the next time you get caught texting in class, instead of saying you’re texting your parent, you can say something wittier like: “Well teach, I would be taking notes, but I am busy using my grey brain matter.” I guess that sounded better in my head.

Another reason we won’t fail is because we’re being raised in a different world, we’ve experienced different hardships than that of our parents and grandparents. Many say that our values and morals have gone to a new low. It’s hard to say what our generation will believe in and stand up for because we’re uninformed and have a lack of care for important issues that don’t necessarily appeal to us. We will grow to be concerned though, and living in a world with insane news developing every minute, we’ll only become more informed being able to see the news via social networking and the internet. I think our generation can reflect on the big time mistakes that our parents have made. There are so many differences we can make from the issues of today. The youth stands up for things like: equal rights for gays, peace from the wars being fought today.

The modern world has us buying things left and right and competing for money and materials. Even though we’re just teenagers we’re already competing ourselves to get into the best colleges and have the best jobs, and it takes us to negativity. Now, this all sounds negative, but if we’re a generation fighting to be the best, I think that only provides more fuel for us to succeed anyway, because we will have more people who have been through college and educated, and since we realize the flaws of today, that gives us the grounds to better our tomorrow.

This past year, I was shocked by the number of divorces that had happened between celebrities. I think the biggest shock of all was when I heard about Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smiths’ separation after 13 years of

marriage. It feels like this is the only way for celebrities to be happy. They have to create drama for themselves in order to get back into the headlines. Then I started thinking, what if none of this was true? What if they were just doing this to make the front page of People’s magazine? Or what if they just wanted to see how much attention they could get from their beloved fans?

I fail to see the logic in the way celebrities lead their lives. Even as I write this, I realize how hypocritical I seem. I have no interest in celebrities. Sure, I’m curious as to how they live their lives and yes, I’m nosy when it comes to knowing how the other half lives, but I still don’t understand how they continue their lives like some reality soap opera. I wouldn’t know the impact of it seeing as how I’m not a famous celebrity but in my eyes, I certainly do not see how they can be happy.

And maybe it’s not their fault that they are subjugated to behave the way they do. Maybe as a public, this is what we secretly want to see. Because of their financial success, we need their lives to be unhappy and problematic. And maybe we are a little bit jealous of their fame and how perfect they are and that we basically worship them. And yes, I mean worship literally. We are eager to receive the next round of magazines that are released containing information about the newest celebrity gossip. We even watch E News religiously just to ‘Keep up with the Kardashians.’ Pun intended.

In the world of celebrity gossip, news seems to travel faster than the speed of light. This is largely due to the fact that we devour celebrity gossip faster than turkey on Thanksgiving. We need these little aspects of drama in our lives to coincide with how boring our reality is. As a society, we have created this need for drama and yet we still wonder why celebrities have begun to capitalize our need for drama. They feed us with their own downfalls, separations, divorces, rehabilitation sprints, etc. making our lives seemingly more interesting. In truth, they’re probably just giving their fans what they desire.

Are We the Generation of Failures? Why we will succeed

besity in the United States is rising greatly, and just driving down Broadway, I can honestly see why. When faced with choices, we tend to take the quick and easy way out. McDonalds. Burger King. KFC. Sure, there is a variety, but not much of that variety is good for you. Truthfully, I can say that I am guilty of doing the same. I do whatever is most convenient, but is convenient good enough?

The first step for staying healthy would most likely be cutting back on fast food. I know it’s difficult, but think about it...“How can people eat all that greasy food and still manage to stay healthy?” With all the salt, butter, grease, and fat in the French fries and hamburgers, it’s a wonder that people’s arteries are not clogged. Instead of running through McDonalds, run through your fridge. I promise you whatever you put together will be 100 percent better for you.

I completely understand that some people cannot help being the size that they are because of their health or other related problems, but for the people that are capable of getting healthy; why not take a chance? I don’t know if it’s just me, but when I watch the reality shows where someone loses an ungodly amount of weight I tear up a little. Just seeing how happy and healthy they have become proves that it is worth the struggle.

When it comes to exercise I tend to drop the schedule as fast as a new year’s resolution, but there are some simple ways to exercise. Taking the stairs rather than the elevator surprisingly makes a huge difference. Carrying around a water bottle eliminates the urge to buy a soda. With the spare time you have consider going on a walk or light jog, it’s good for you and is quite refreshing. These are just a few of the many substitutions that could be easily made.

Some people eat snacks, and that’s just fine. It’s what they are snacking on that’s not okay. Instead of eating calorie packed junk food or speeding through a drive through, try something a little more beneficial. Something as simple as an apple and bottle of water could possibly save your life. When going ‘out to eat’ it would be much healthier to pick up a salad rather than an extra-large beef burrito.

So, before you head out to McDonalds or Taco Bell, take a minute to ask yourself…..Do you really want to put your body through all that pain called ‘Fast Food?’ You know what they say, “You are what you eat.” I know that I sure do not want to be a Big Mac, French Fries or even a Taco.
