STUDENT PROFILES

Name: Jesse McDougall, Masters in Finance 2005 (Full-time)

Nationality: Canadian

Job title: Portfolio Manager

Organisation: Barclays Capital

Career: Before embarking on the Masters in Finance programme, Jesse worked as an investment banking analyst in Canada and in London. Jesse was recruited by Barclays Capital and works in a team running hedge fund strategies on a proprietary basis.

When choosing a course, I looked at MBAs, but I did a management undergraduate degree, so I wanted a quantitative finance degree. London Business School’s excellent brand, the job opportunities that come out of it, and the fact that I wanted to be London-based were all reasons for my choice, and in addition, some former colleagues in Canada had attended the School, and all were very positive about it.

I worked as an investment banking analyst, looking at M&A activities from an advisory basis. My goal entering the programme was to stay in finance but change from an advisory role to trading – and it worked perfectly for me. The course gives you the choice – a certain proportion is required study, and the rest is chosen electives, enabling you to express and develop the direction you want to take.

I took the opportunity to give up my job for ten months with no hesitation at all. I was very confident that the payback from London Business School would be more than sufficient. Financially I have no regrets, and I made precisely the switch I intended to make. I wanted to stay in London too, and the Masters in Finance facilitated that.

The course was excellent, far beyond my expectations. The speed and content were sufficiently challenging, starting at a high level, with an assumed knowledge base. As a result, it was fast paced, but not unmanageable. The content was up-to-date with what’s happening in the markets; for example hedge funds, trends and accounting. The professors were excellent too, stars in their field. It was a very positive experience.

We had 125 students on the course, so we formed a lot of relationships. You gain a fantastic network globally.

At work I’m much more likely to look at a CV from someone with a London Business School qualification, because I know the quality behind it. One of the contrasts between a US university and London Business School is the international attendance. I learnt a lot about different cultures, and I now have a new cultural perspective both professionally and socially. A network of colleagues and friends like this is unique.

This programme is for people who have a solid finance background but want to shift forward in their careers. It’s a fantastic booster and enables a finance career change like no other.

Name: Nicolas Burdett, Masters in Finance 2010 (Part-time)

Nationality: Spanish

Job title: Vice President

Organisation: Hydra Capital Management

Career: Nicolas graduated from Lincoln College, Oxford with an MA in languages, beginning his career at CNBC Business News as a news co-ordinator and interviewer. After three years, he made the transition from broadcast financial journalism to boutique investment management in the field of Emerging Markets fixed income. It was after three years in this field that he enrolled on the Masters in Finance programme in 2008.

I graduated in languages, so I have no formal training in finance. After three years with Hydra Capital Management, I felt ready to take on a programme of this intensity, because I thought it would be beneficial to measure quantitatively my understanding of finance, as opposed to the qualitative measure I get in practice.

I decided to study part-time because the opportunity costs of giving up my salary and bonus were too high, and in fact my fees are paid for by my company – I’m very lucky with that. It‘s also much easier to look for a job when one is already employed – part-time is certainly a better offering in that respect, because it allows you to carry on earning while you’re learning. The other great benefit of part-time study is that you can apply some of the skills you’re learning immediately, on the job.

London Business School is the strongest brand name out there. The beauty of it is that candidates have to have a minimum of two years of financial experience, so there is no question of ending up in a class of people without a clue. Being in London is another massive advantage, because it’s a financial powerhouse, very international, very innovative in terms of financial products and structures – London is the place, and, as a European, for me it’s closer to home.

I think that the introduction of the new weekend format has benefits. You will be able to get your teeth into the content much more if you’re dedicating the weekend to it, and you still keep one in two weekends free. The intense block of study will allow you to focus, rather than just a couple of hours here and there. I feel it will make for a better mix of participants, because people will be able to come from further afield rather than just London.

The programme is very positive and enriching and it opens your eyes to other possibilities. I’ve never really tested myself in accountancy before, but now I know I can do this as part of being a Private Equity analyst, or for my own company, I’m looking at those possibilities, because I’ve got new-found competencies.

the finance function of industrial, commercial and service organisations

corporate finance, venture capital and corporate restructuring

corporate planning and consultancy, where a detailed knowledge of finance is required

other organisations, such as accountancy firms, regulatory bodies, legal firms, insurance companies, property consultants, commodity businesses and investor relations specialists requiring an in-depth understanding of finance

finance within the public sector and not-for-profit organisations, including central banks, local/national governments and international organisations.

Am I eligible?Applicants should have at least two years, full-time, relevant work experience (typically, students have six to eight years relevant experience although each applicant will be considered on his/her own merit). Relevant experience will have been gained in finance or a closely related field (for example corporate law, finance journalism or IT in a financial institution); candidates will need to have experienced enough financial transactions to be able to contribute to cases discussed in class. Applicants working in IT will need to show significant exposure to finance-related products.

The programme is practical and applied, and the experience of your classmates is a major part of the overall learning experience.

The programme is not designed for people without prior finance experience who are planning to effect a career change into finance (for this, a general management programme like our MBA is a more appropriate course of study) but it is an excellent choice for people who want to switch areas within finance or generally expand and deepen their finance knowledge.

We are seeking individuals for whom the programme is a good career fit, and who are likely to have successful future careers.

Above all, candidates will need to demonstrate that they have the commitment, experience, motivation and potential to benefit from, and contribute to, the programme.

If you would like us to assess your eligibility visit www.london.edu/mif/eligibility/ to upload your CV. The Masters in Finance admissions team will then review your background and provide you with personal feedback.
