This week members of the P&C had the opportunity to “play” at their monthly meeting. Mr Brett Harris attended the meeting and took several parents through virtual reality worlds using the virtual reality technology currently on loan to the school. Mrs Knight visited Cliff House in a mixed reality world (however she was unwilling to look over the cliff), Mr Mitton visited Machu Picchu in Peru and Mr Schaefer drew a virtual 3D house. The VR is connected to a television screen, enabling others to see what the participant can see.

Learning at school is not just for students. This week teachers from Quandialla, Caragabal, Forbes, Gooloogong and Grenfell Public Schools joined staff from the high school in a STEM teacher professional learning day. Guided by the Department’s STEM Curriculum Advisor Matt Scott, teachers learnt how to implement new and emerging technologies into the classroom. There may have been a bit of playing too ...

With the arrival of the cattle at The Henry Lawson High School, came the need for some new heavy duty infrastructure. With the expertise needed already on staff, Mr Amey and his team of metals and engineering and primary industries students together with Miss Whale and her agriculture students combined to plan and design a practical, economic and structually stable cattle ramp. The project was completed both during class time and after school and the finished product is certainly something that will be of great use. The Agriculture Department would like to extend it’s thanks to Mr Amey and his team for all their time and help in the designing and fabrication of the new cattle loading ramp.

GRACE BEST WINS AUDI SCHOLARSHIPFormer school captain and Henry Lawson High School student Grace Best has been awarded a prestigious Audi Scholarship of $2500. Grace was nominated by the Grenfell Branch of the CEF. The Audi Scholarship recognises students pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) within their degrees. Grace’s study has focused on the scientific method, experimental procedures as well as research projects and presentations. In one project she explored current and future detection and management of electromagnetic signatures of naval vessels, in which the findings were presented at an academic conference. Her studies also include calculus, linear algebra, modelling, combinatorics, graph theory, statistical analysis and training in higher order computer programming in multiple languages to further explore and apply these maths and physics concepts.Grace is demonstrating success across these fields and is one of the very few women studying in these areas. She actively advocates the importance of encouraging and supporting more women in pursuing studies and careers in STEM areas.Grace’s ambition is to pioneer a career in these male-dominated industries, with a strong

interest in big data, that is analysing data sets with statistical and mathematical methods to extract useful and interesting information. She is inspired by Dr Megan Clark, leader of Australian Space Agency team, an area that interests Grace as a possible career path. In amongst all this, Grace volunteers as student mentor to freshman in similar STEM programs – aiding and supporting academic and social orientation each semester – enabling the success of more students in STEM courses. It was all these qualities that impressed the Audi panel, resulting in Grace being one of the 4 recipients for 2019.Well done Grace.

It’s (nearly) showtime!Next week our show team will travel to Sydney to compete in the schools competition of the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Our team consisting of fifteen students, seven head of cattle and a dozen meat birds will compete in various school competitions over seven days as well as showing cattle on behalf of Devanah Angus and Murray Grey Cattle Stud. The week will culminate with our students competing in the cattle junior judging on Tuesday 16 April. We would like to wish the show team good luck in their competitions and we look forward to hearing the results.

When our meat chicks arrived, they were tiny balls of yellow fluff. Fast forward six weeks and they weigh as much as four kilograms. Our agriculture students have been monitoring the chicks food and water intake to ensure maximum growth is obtained. Whilst they are now not the cutest animal/bird on the ag plots, studying the growth of the chicks has been a great exercise.

Defending a rea-sonable total of 112 runs, our bowlers put pressure on a very good Young High School batting line up with Rhys Hughes bowling a powerful three overs with two maidens for 4/1. Congratulations to the team and Mr McKnight.
