WHY DID YOU CHOOSE
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE?
In choosing what I wanted
to pursue for the rest of my
life, I initially struggled with
narrowing my wide range of
interests to both satisfy my
wildly creative side while
still being economically and
intellectually stimulating. I was
always fascinated by the built
environment and wanted to
leave a lasting mark on society,
so it only made sense to
choose a major in the fi eld of
architecture/planning/etc.
DESCRIBE YOUR STUDIO
EXPERIENCES.
I honestly loved and learned
from every studio experience.
Freshman year studio consists
diff erent than everyone else
is absolutely an asset to your
own projects and overall
development. absolutely an
asset to your own projects and
overall development.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE
PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS WHO
ARE INTERESTED IN LANDSCAPE
ARCHITECTURE?
Students interested in
Landscape Architecture are
already a step ahead. The major
is so multi-disciplinary and
exciting. There is something
for every type of designer and
of directed exercises that you’re
doing with other students that
have every type of background.
It is that fi rst melting pot
experience where you bring
your strengths and focus on
developing your weaknesses.
I immediately learned strategic
and eff ective time management
skills and when to allow myself
to dial back the perfectionism in
order to focus on a more holistic
product. My fi rst landscape
studio was about exploring what
is was to inhabit a space. We
went on fi eld trips around Ohio
State and downtown Columbus
to view works of landscape
architecture happening right in
our back yard. I learned that I
had to stick with my instincts,
and doing something radically
When I fi rst
learned about Landscape
Architecture in the
freshman seminar
at Knowlton, I was
immediately fascinated by
the prospect of designing so
much more than a building,
designing for so much
more than people, and
recognizing what I was
designing could integrate
and improve countless
systems within society and
the environment.

Major:
Landscape Architecture + Environmental Economics Minor
Hometown:
Granville, Ohio
there are no limits to how the
profession will grow and change.
My advice is to absolutely
research various branches of
the discipline and have a goal in
mind from the beginning, going
into each class and studio with a
particular direction and focus on
their interests. It is so rare that a
fi eld allows you to do that.
WHAT DID YOU DO THIS SUMMER?
This summer I interned at EDSA
in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They
are an international landscape
architecture fi rm known for hand
graphics and luxurious design.
As an intern, I participated
in a charrette my fi rst week,
brainstorming a design for a
real project and presented
it to the entire company (the
principals, president, vice
presidents, etc.). Then I worked
with one of the dozen studios
at the headquarters and
worked on everything from
AutoCAD to hand-illustrating
plans to presentation booklets
to brainstorming to creating
materials for international
workshops for new projects.
These projects were everywhere
from Mexico, Croatia, China,
Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, to
domestic work in Florida. It was
an amazing experience that truly
showed me that my education
has prepared me really well
for the professional world, and
encouraged me to have a very
focused senior year.
WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES
YOUR MAJOR DISTINCTIVE OVER
OTHER PROGRAMS AT OHIO STATE
AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY?
Landscape Architecture is
such a conglomeration of other
majors. There is design, math
and science, environmental
science, and also social theory
and economics. It is a liberal
arts degree that is skill-oriented,
preparing you for whatever the
professional world will throw at
you. Landscape Architecture
at Ohio State provides a multi-
disciplinary program with the
distinct advantages of being
housed within a school of
Architecture and also the
College of Engineering, while
still only being four years to the
professional degree.
WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO AFTER
GRADUATION?
I plan to work as a designer
at a landscape architecture/
urban design fi rm. I want to work
for a number of years before
deciding whether to go back to
graduate school. I also intend to
become licensed as a landscape
architect. It would be fantastic if I
could do a travel study program
researching urban resiliency in
the Nordic countries if there is
time before starting my
fi rst position.
