3.0 A restful night

Page 13: Inhabit Basics Welcome Inside Inhabit Notes from Inhabit

Importance of Sleep for Wellness

Modern society is built on the foundations of poor sleep. Long commutes, longer working hours, busy social lives and endless screen time means we rarely have the opportunity to switch off. Sleep is increasingly seen as a luxury rather than a necessity and only in recent years have we truly begun to understand its importance.

Inhabit Hotel Guest Directory

It has taken decades of research for us to unravel the mystery of sleep and - although there are still many unknowns - the findings are clear: sleep is the single most important factor in health and wellbeing – more so than diet, exercise and genetics.

Sleep is Mother Nature’s cure all and is the foundation for good health. The long list of life-shortening illnesses like obesity, heart disease and dementia that are linked to chronic sleep loss prove one thing: the shorter your sleep is, the shorter your life span.

But now for the good news: you can reduce the chances of those health complications by taking the most widely used medicine in the world - sleep.

Besides leaving us feeling refreshed, we know that sleep facilitates our brain cells building connections and storing memories from the day.

It also

• restores the immune system• balances hormone levels• lowers blood pressure • boosts mental wellbeing• raises sex drive • increases fertility

In our notes on sleep, you’ll find bedtime ritual ideas, a pre-bed stretching routine, easy ways to beat jet lag and relaxation techniques to try in your room - and after you leave the hotel.

Wishing you a restful night, from all of us at Inhabit.

Page 14: Inhabit Basics Welcome Inside Inhabit Notes from Inhabit

1.

Slip into a warm bath or shower and melt away

the day. Pour a generous amount of REN Neroli

Body Wash into your hand and lather it all over.

Neroli has been shown to ease stress, lower blood

pressure and support restful sleep. Inhale deeply

to relieve tension and clear your mind.

2.

After your bath or shower, massage the REN Neroli

& Grapefruit Body Cream into your body in slow,

upward strokes taking extra time on common areas

of tension like the neck, shoulders, and hands.

Taking the time to do this makes the simple act of

moisturising an opportunity to indulge your senses

and nourish the soul.

3.

Dust your pillow with a generous amount of Bramley

Sleep Spray. Inhale deeply through the nose and

slowly exhale through the mouth. Repeat for five

breaths.

4.

Climb into bed, slip on your silk eye mask and

drift off to dreamland.

A bedtime routine helps the brain and body wind down and prepare for

sleep. Climbing into bed and drifting off should be the final step in

your bedtime routine, not the only step! To help you get started, we’ve

designed a simple routine to soothe your soul and blanket you

in slumber.

Bedtime Routine

Inhabit Hotel Guest Directory

Wall Pose

A simple but restorative position, wall pose gently stretches the hamstrings, lower back and neck. To get started grab a cushion or folded blanket and place it five to six inches away from the wall, or more if you are particularly tight. Carefully lie down on the floor, finishing with the support in the small of your back and your legs up the wall. Let the wall carry the weight of your legs and allow yourself to fully relax into the pose. Stay for five minutes or more.

Sleeping Butterfly

Start in a seated position on the floor. Gently bend your legs, bringing the soles of your feet together and your knees outwards. Slowly lay down on your back, keeping your soles together and letting gravity gently open your hips. Bring your heels of your feet toward your body - as close as is comfortable without straining. Stay for five to ten breaths or as long as is comfortable.

Child’s Pose

Begin kneeling on the floor with your big toes touching and your knees slightly apart. Slowly melt your forehead towards the ground, bring your arms behind you and tuck them close to your body with your palms facing up. Soften your shoulders, breathe deeply for five to ten breaths, letting the tension melt away.

SavasanaGrab two pillows or folded blankets and sit on the floor. Lay down on your back with one pillow or blanket under your head and one under your knees. Rest your arms a few inches away from your body with your palms up. Slowly close your eyes and let your entire body melt into the floor. Consciously relax your body, starting with your feet and moving all the way to your head. Stay in this position for between five and thirty minutes.

These stretches are great whether you spend a lot of time at your desk

or pounding the city’s pavements. Aside from helping to relieve muscle

tension, taking five minutes to stretch before bed is a great way to slow

your thoughts and quiet your mind.

Bedtime Stretches

Page 15: Inhabit Basics Welcome Inside Inhabit Notes from Inhabit

Prior to boarding your flight, set your watch

and phone to your final destination time zone.

Try to stretch and walk around around every

hour when you are awake. Movement promotes

mental alertness and helps your body regulate.

Try to get some sleep early in the flight.

Brushing your teeth and using a sleep mask

can be helpful cues to your brain that it’s

time to rest.

Stay hydrated during and after

the flight but avoid any alcohol and caffeine.

Get into natural light as soon as you arrive,

if possible. The sunlight helps anchor your

circadian rhythm to its 24-hour cycle and will

help ease jet-lag more quickly.

Skewed body clocks and insomnia - the dreaded downside to international

travel. For every hour of time difference, you will typically require

one day to recover. So a six hour time difference means six days of jet

lag. But fear not, tired friend, as we’ve put together our top tips to

help you kick your jet lag to the curb:

Jet Lag

Relaxation Techniques

Body Scan

This exercise can be done in bed or

on the floor. Lie in a comfortable

position, covering yourself with

a blanket and resting your head

on a cushion. Close your eyes and

focus your awareness on steadily

breathing in and out. Starting at

your feet, notice the sensations –

pressure, pain, tingling, tightness

– that you are feeling.

As your mind wanders, notice it

happening and then slowly return

focus to your body. Continue moving

your attention up your body,

noticing the points where you

contact the floor, and exploring

the sensations all the way up to

your head. When you have finished

scanning your entire body, open

your eyes and carry the increased

awareness with you through the rest

of your day.

From work stress to minor annoyances like misplacing your keys, to more

serious worries like the health of a loved one, varying degrees of

stress and anxiety impact most of us on a daily basis.

Studies have shown that relaxation exercises can be a simple yet

effective way to manage these stress responses. Much like a muscle, the

more you do these exercises, the more effective and easier they will

become.

Mindful Meditation

This simple exercise will help you

increase awareness of your thoughts

and feelings, which has been shown

to help reduce stress and anxiety.

Begin in a comfortable position in

a chair or on the floor. Close your

eyes and bring your attention to

the present moment, focusing on

your breath.

Inhale deeply in through the nose

and out through the mouth. As

thoughts or concerns drift through

your mind, allow them to pass

through and return your focus to

your breathing. Continue for five

minutes, or until you feel ready to

finish.

Page 16: Inhabit Basics Welcome Inside Inhabit Notes from Inhabit

Mindfulness is a practice that allows us to be fully present in the moment, rather than reflecting on the past or looking to the future.

3.1 Mindfulness

Page 17: Inhabit Basics Welcome Inside Inhabit Notes from Inhabit

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a practice that allows us to be fully

present in the moment, rather than reflecting on the

past or looking to the future. A mental skill that

can be honed over time, practicing mindfulness in

our daily lives brings numerous benefits for both our

mental and physical wellbeing; from increased focus

and lower stress levels, to a deeper connection with

the world around us.

Inhabit Hotel Guest Directory

To be mindful simply means to be fully engaged with

whatever we are doing at that moment, allowing each

thought to pass through our minds, without judgement.

Mindfulness is powerful, and can have a huge impact

on our overall state of mind. Just eight weeks of

mindfulness meditation is thought to rewire our brains,

encouraging a more positive outlook. Guided mindfulness

meditations are a great place to start and will help

you adopt a more mindful approach to any situation.

What is the science behind mindfulness?

Mindfulness can have a profound effect on our wellbeing

- but exactly why is it so beneficial?

A significant amount of scientific research into the

neurological changes that take place while we practice

mindfulness and findings include:

• An increase to grey matter in the brain, in regions

involved in muscle control and sensory perception,

memory, emotions, speech, decision making, and

self-control.

• Decreased brain activation in the amygdala, the part

of the brain responsible for triggering fear.

• Increased brain activity in the prefrontal cortex,

a part of the brain involved in the regulation of

emotions, which links to lower stress levels.

Page 18: Inhabit Basics Welcome Inside Inhabit Notes from Inhabit

What does mindful travel look like?

Being present in the moment is particularly important when we travel. Mindfulness allows us to immerse ourselves in a new place, fully engaging with the new experiences it brings, savouring each moment. In a world where we rush, rush, rush, the opportunity to pause and reflect can be invaluable.

At Inhabit, we want to share with you the joy of slowing down, whether that means trying out a mindfulness meditation in your room or our plant-filled atrium, a wander through the local area (with a little guidance from our neighbourhood guide), or simply taking some time out to relax and switch off for those devices that can make us a slave to our schedules.

Inhabit Hotel Guest Directory

What mindfulness facilities are on offer at Inhabit?

• Guided mindfulness sessions from founder of Yeotown

Mercedes Sieff are available in each guest room. • Discover our Meditation Pod, where you can listen to

guided meditations. Whether you would like to feel calmer, uplifted or ease jet lag, there’s a session for you.

• Take part in a yoga or meditation class in our

atrium. • Guided walks and running routes are available on

request to help you navigate the local area at your own pace.

• Look out for guest speakers on wellness and special

mindfulness events taking place in our library. • Our team have all completed a mindfulness-based

stress reduction (MBSR) course in conjunction with the Mindfulness Centre and would love to share their learnings with you during your stay.

In a continuation of Inhabit Hotel’s ethos of mindfulness and wellness, Culture A curated a holistic art programme for the guest rooms and public areas to engage guests in a multi-disciplinary art experience that celebrates Inhabit’s mission, London sensibility and Scandinavian style. The partnership of Culture A and Inhabit highlights our joint commitment to promoting local and international culture. The programme features a mix of emerging and established artists working in a variety of mediums, including textile, metal, painting, and photography. Our hope is that the experience inspires guests to reflect on their surroundings in the context of Inhabit’s ethos, while also connecting with the works and each other through the inclusive, universal language of art.

The Inhabit art programme showcases the hotel’s mission and positive psychology through various moments of visual storytelling. Culture A developed 6 curatorial themes in relation to Inhabit’s ethos and sourced artwork accordingly. These themes included:
