Weekly Broadsheet
Spring Term
23 March 2018
www.lancingprepworthing.co.uk
Dear Parents,
Spring is here although it didn’t feel very spring-like at the start of the week! Term has drawn to a
close and the children are ready for a good rest.
Last week ended with the Nursery and Pre-Prep Beefit Party and Prep Games’ Night, very kindly
organised and run by the LPWA. The children had an absolutely lovely time. My sincere thanks to
all our noble parents who gave up their Friday evening to spend time with lots of very excited
children!
On Monday evening, we were treated to a wonderful dance performance at the Pavilion Theatre in
Worthing from a group of our young dancers. They sparkled figuratively and literally for the
enthusiastic audience and made us all very proud. It is lovely to be able to share our enthusiasm for
dance with children from schools all over Worthing and this annual event is a great opportunity for
us.
On Wednesday the victorious Celts enjoyed their House Treat trip to West Worthing Tennis Club
and celebrated collecting the most house points this term.
There was more celebration for Pippa S (year 7) who joined Will O’B (year 5) as the second member
of the Hundred Club this year (for children who collect 100 house points over half a term!). Well
done to them both.
On Wednesday morning we enjoyed our Nursery & Pre-prep Easter assembly which was
wonderfully supported by parents and grandparents. Our Nursery and Pre-prep children never
cease to amaze us with their confidence and poise as they speak in public and sing with such energy
and charm. I am sure that many of us left the assembly with tunes bouncing around in our minds -
mine stayed with me all day!
Thursday afternoon was the opportunity for the prep children to shine in their service at St Mary’s
Church and this too was a lovely family occasion with fabulous music and wonderfully expressive
readings.
Beatrice T spoke to me earlier this term with a wonderful idea linked to our school value ‘Be kind’.
For the past two weeks, following an excellent assembly led by Beatrice and a team of Year 7 pupils,
there have been secret ‘peer angels’ throughout the prep school, doing small acts of kindness for
other children in their class. This has generated some truly beautiful moments in the school and we
are pleased and proud of Beatrice. This is an idea I would like to repeat annually as part of Lent.
Pippa S (year 7) had more to celebrate this weekend as she qualified for the Dengie finals at
Addington on 15th April, on her pony, Zazu. Congratulations also to Max W (year 6) who has won
the Junior Section of the Worthing Rotary Club’s Young Writer Competition against stiff
competition. Congratulations to Max W, Nerea K-M and Sam G in Year 6 who have all been
awarded honorary 11+ scholarships. Very well done to you all.

This morning after assembly we announced the casting of Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat.
The audition process has been particularly gruelling this year as there is so much talent in the
school. We have tried to cast Year 8 pupils where we can as this will be their last opportunity to
shine and all those who have auditioned have a part but inevitably some people will be upset that
they haven’t gained the part they wanted. Please reassure them that all parts are equally important
and that we will all have great fun together producing what we hope will be a cracking show!
We have some staff news to share with you.
Mrs Emma Stephens, will become Head of Pre-Prep and EYFS from September. Emma is quite
simply an inspirational teacher and leader and I am thrilled that she will be joining the senior man-
agement of the school. Emma will, of course, remain our inspiring Reception class teacher, but this
new post will enable her to spread her magic a little wider.
The wonderful Mrs Nicky Smith is retiring at the end of this academic year and she will be greatly
missed by us all. Nicky has been a stalwart of the school for 13 years and many children have bene-
fited from her wisdom and great care. The children leave our Year 1 class excited by learning and
ready for all the new challenges they will meet in Year 2. Nicky is looking forward to her new ad-
ventures and I am quite sure that she will be very busy.
I am delighted to announce that we have appointed Miss Jessica Snook, who taught an outstanding
lesson at interview and joins us with excellent references to teach our Year 1 class next year. Jessica
studied for her BA(Hons) in Primary Education at Canterbury Christ Church University and is cur-
rently teaching Year 1 at Junior Kings School, Canterbury.
We have also appointed two new teachers in Key Stage 2 who will cater for our increasing num-
bers: Ben Lucas, who is currently teaching at Great Walstead and has a Degree in Engineering from
Leeds University and a PGCE in Primary Education from Brighton University. Ben has skills in IT,
maths, games and outdoor education. Nicholas Grimshaw, who is currently teaching at Rudyard
Kipling School is also very pleased to be joining us. He has a BA (Hons) Degree in Primary Educa-
tion from Brighton University. Nicholas’s strengths lie in English and drama. Both teachers are crea-
tive and both taught outstanding problem-solving lessons. These are exciting appointments and will
broaden our provision for all the children in the school. We look forward to welcoming them to our
prep team.
Finally, I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear that Mrs Francesca Milling who epitomises our
‘Love learning, Be Kind and Go Out Into The World and do Good’ ethos, wishes to further her own
education and she will be studying full time for a Master’s Degree at Brighton University next year.
Happily, she will still be a part of our team working for part of the week with us and bringing more
exciting and innovative ideas into school with her.
I send you my good wishes for the Easter break and hope you manage to spend some happy time
with your wonderful children. They delight me every day.
Best wishes,

On Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 April, the BBC will return to Lancing College’s renowned Chapel
to record and broadcast the Choral Evensong and Sunday Worship . This event is very exciting
and a testament to the wonderful College Choir and also the long-standing and respected tradi-
tions of worship at Lancing College Chapel. It is also a welcomed return, following the successful
broadcast of BBC Radio 4’s Any Questions? in September 2017.
The stunning Chapel architecture provides an inspiring background for visitors and pupils alike,
who often come together as a community in the school’s services with the Chapel Choir. The Choir
- an embodiment of the College’s Christian values and passion for music - has produced many
award winning musicians over the years, including two winners of BBC Radio 2’s Young Choris-
ter of the Year.
The College warmly welcomes members of the public to both events, with online booking now
live.
The services and details are as follows:
28 April - Radio 3 recording of Choral Evensong, starting at 1.30 pm
29 April - Radio 4, live broadcast of Sunday Worship, starting at 7.45 am
There is no cost to attend either service and refreshments will be provided after each service.
Thank you for your support with this.

Writing & Poetry Competitions
Many congratulations to Max W in year 6, who has won the junior section of the Rotary Young
Writer competition. We are immensely proud of him. All entries from LPW were highly original
and well written. The judge, who writes books for Scholarship and Common Entrance candidates
on 'how to improve your writing skills', thought the standard of writing for all entrants was “very
high.” I will be submitting entries to another writing competition next term: The Foyle Young Poet
of the Year 2018. Below is a link to their website.
http://poetrysociety.org.uk/competitions/foyle-young-poets-of-the-year-award/
Applicants must be aged 11 or over (on 31 July 2018) and must also have the permission of their
parents to enter. The judges are looking for “a poem that feels alive on the page… rich with image-
ry and playfulness, highly alert to language. ” Also, they are “looking for a poet who is having a
good time, whether it be about a serious subject such as environment issues or a silly one such as a
chocolate wrapper.”
The Easter holiday is a perfect time to start work on a poem. All entries will receive 3 house points
each. The children in years 6, 7 & 8 have been analysing poetry in their lessons this term, so my ex-
pectations are high! Have fun and bring me your poems on the first day back to receive your house
points.

Summer Concert
On 17 May Lancing College and Lancing Prep Worthing will be joining forces to produce a summer
concert. Parents are invited to join us at 4pm with a picnic and blanket to sit in the afternoon sun
and enjoy some wonderful music. For more details please contact Mrs Goodson via email jgood-
[email protected] (see the attached poster).
Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – Years 3-5 Costumes
This summer we will be performing the musical Joseph as a school and, as well as those students
who have auditioned for parts in the cast, all year 3-8 pupils will participate as members of the
Choir. We are very much looking forward to it! The children will learn their parts in their weekly
music lessons ready for the performance which will take place at the end of June.
The children will need the following costumes and we would be very grateful if you could provide
them with:
Smart plain blue jeans without rips, logos or other markings
A single colour t-shirt – this can be plain red/blue/orange/yellow/green/purple. It is essential that
the t-shirt is completely plain without any logos or pictures
Plain white pumps or trainers, again without logos or additional colours
It would be very helpful if the costume could be ready immediately after the May half term with all
items of clothing individually named and brought to school in a clearly named and robust plastic
bag. If you have any problems with this costume please contact Mrs Goodson via email

Fixtures week commencing 16 April
Wed 18 April Cricket: U11 v Dorset House (H) @ Lancing College 2.00 return 5.15
Cricket Training: U13/12 team (H) 2.00-4.00
Rounders: Seniors Training (H) 2.00-4.00
First team v Prebendal School Lost 1-4
The First Team started the game very strongly, and scored early on through William T to take the
lead. The boys put Prebendal under a great deal of pressure, but with no reward of a goal. As time
went by Prebendal started to establish themselves and scored just before half time. LPW never
really produced the same quality in the second half, and the team were moved around a little to
allow others to play. Some poor positioning at set pieces allowed Prebendal to score three further
goals, and were deserved winners. A slightly disappointing end of the season where the First
hockey team have lost just twice. We look forward to moving into the cricket season next term!
Player of the match: James N
Under 9/8 v Sion School Won 4-1 (H)
The Year 3 and 4 boys played the final game of the term against Sion. The boys started strongly
and scored a couple of early goals from Alex W and Oliver S. They played some good passing
football throughout the half, and lead 4-0 at half term. A change in positions allowed others to play
and the second half was far more even. Both sides had many opportunities to score; however, Sion
scored a fantastic goal at the end of the game to make the final score 4-1. An excellent game to
finish the term, well done to all those who participated. Player of the match: Joseph M
Mr Richards
U8 Tag Rugby
On Tuesday, the under 8 team played very well in a tournament at Pennthorpe School and scored
a whole host of tries. The opposing teams had more experience so we were the novices of the
event. LPW played against Belmont to start off with and despite scoring the first try of the game,
lost 4-2. They then played Reigate St Mary's in which they were beaten 4-0. Duke of Kent School
came next and LPW secured a last minute draw. The final score was 4-4. LPW then lost to
Copthorne, 5-1 before also losing to Longacre and the hosts Pennthorpe. Captain, Seb G was given
LPW's Player of the Tournament Prize for which he won a medal. I'm so proud of the children for
their efforts and I look forward to seeing how they progress with rugby when we play again this
time next year.
Colts Hockey
The Colts teams played their final hockey fixtures of the season on Wednesday at Lancing College
against Prebendal School. The red team played well. With the score finely poised at 0-0 at the
break, they put in a brilliant performance in the second half to win 2-0. Both goals came from Cal N
at the death when it seemed like it was heading for a draw. Player of the match was Will O'B for
his excellent all-round performance. The blue team were 1-0 down at half-time to Prebendal but
there had been some real positives to pick out from their first-half display. Sam G had brought the
ball forward well and combined with Oscar S and Max W to make LPW seem very dangerous
going forwards. In the second half, Oscar S was very unlucky not to score at least one goal as the
Prebendal keeper made some excellent saves with his feet. Sam G got the all-important equaliser
with a fine strike into the bottom corner. LPW huffed and they puffed, but Prebendal dealt with
everything that was thrown at them. Final score was 1-1. Player of the match goes to Sam G for a
brilliant performance and a brilliant goal. Well done to all!

Netball U8 V LPH Won 5-1
This was a very even game where the girls worked hard to put into practice all of the things we
have been working on. They made some lovely passes where they linked well as a team. This creat-
ed space and enabled us to get the ball to our shooters. Our shooters were on form today and made
some fantastic attempts. There was good movement in the circle. Overall a super game played by
all. Well done to all the girls and thank you to the parents who came to support us. Girl of the game:
Phoebe H
Netball U10 v Sion Lost 5 – 7
This was a very tight game where we led for a long period. The girls made some lovely fluid passes
and worked hard to intercept the ball. We struggled to find the space we needed to keep the ball. A
good game played by all. Well done to all the girls who played and thank you to the parents who
came to support us. Girl of the game: Eliza C
Netball U11 v Sion Lost 2 – 11
This was a tricky game as we left a couple of our players to play in the U12/13 game. This meant
some girls played in positions they hadn’t played in before and we had to work hard on communi-
cation. We made some good interceptions but struggled with accurate passing. Overall the girls
tried hard and learnt lots from the experience. Well played to all the girls and thank you to the par-
ents who came to support us. Girl of the game: Nerea K-M
Netball U8/9 V Sion Won 7-0
This was our last game of the season and what a game! The girls played extremely well working as a
team. There were great interceptions all over the court and some superb shooting from Yasmin,
Autumn and Purdey. A great game! Thank you to the parents who came to support us. Girl of the
Game: Kaylee B

Dear Parent/Guardian
This year, our End of Year Celebration for pupils in Years 1 to 8 will be held at Lancing
College at 10.00am on Friday 6 July. The children should come to school in the morning as
usual and we will transport them to the College by coach. You will receive an official invite
in due course but I am writing in advance so that you can save the date in your diaries.
Parking will be allocated in the field opposite the Chapel and refreshments will be served
in the Megarry Room from 9.15 am.
There will be a reception after the prize giving for Year 8 pupils and their families. All other
parents are warmly invited to bring a picnic to enjoy with friends after the celebration.
You will be able to take your children home from Lancing College after the celebration,
which will finish at approximately 11.15am, or after the picnic should you decide to stay.
There will be no transport back to LPW on that day but we intend for school buses to run as
normal departing from the College after the picnic should there be a demand for them.
The term will end at 11.30am for Years 1 to 8 and 11.15 for the EYFS (Nursery and
Reception) on Friday 6 July. There will be no Wraparound care on this day.
I do hope that you will be able to join us. This is such a lovely way to end the school year
together.
Kind regards,
Heather Beeby
