AAUW member and current Program Vice President, Nancy Dunis, will be our October speaker. Her presentation will focus on early Oswego Pioneer women who made significant contributions to farming, business, education, culture, and family. She will also talk about the history of the Heritage House and Museum and there will be an opportunity to visit the museum’s current exhibit entitled “Creating Community: Oswego Women”.
Nancy is a native of Lake Oswego and currently serves on the board of the Oswego Heritage Council. She is passionate about Oswego history and writes a monthly history column for the Lake Oswego Review on behalf of Oswego Heritage Council entitled “From Our Vault”.
Nancy has done a lot of character-acting portraying Lucy Pollard, one of Oswego’s early pioneer women farmers. She will come appropriately attired as Lucy. Other early pioneer women Nancy will introduce you to include Lucia Bliss, Miranda Durham, Anne Shannon Monroe, and Theresa Truchot.

Squire’s Scribblingsby Pat Squire, President
Our first speaker of the year, Robyn Jones, Vice President for Enrollment at Marylhurst, gave a very interesting and enlightening talk about student debt in this country. Using the AAUW report, “Deeper in Debt,” she cited statistics that show that student debt affects women much more than men. Women are in the majority enrollment at most higher education institutions in the U.S., and are taking a proportionately larger share of loans. And after graduation, their salaries are still, on average, nearly 20% lower than men’s in some fields, making their debt harder to repay. This is an alarming problem that resonated with all of us.
Our October 14 program is a special one, featuring our own Program Vice President Nancy Dunis, who will talk about early Lake Oswego pioneer women

who were leaders in farming, business, education, culture and family. The Heritage House also has a display featuring these women. And looking ahead to November, we will have a joint meeting with the Portland Branch to honor former State Rep. Ann Lininger and State Senator Kathleen Taylor for their outstanding leadership on the successful fair pay legislation that passed in the 2017 session. We will also learn more about Title IX in our state. That meeting is on November 11 at Heritage House.
Lake Oswego has a new state representative for House District 38, representing Lake Oswego and part of Southwest Portland. Andrea Salinas will take the house seat of Rep. Ann Lininger, who was appointed a Clackamas County Circuit Court Judge by Governor Kate Brown. Our new representative was chosen by the Clackamas and Multnomah county commissioners in a very selective process. Ms. Salinas, a former political consultant who lives in Lake Oswego, was sworn in September 18. She is especially praised for her work on affordable health care, and women’s health and reproductive issues. We look forward to having her visit with us in the future.
The Lake Oswego Reads book for February 2018 (just four months away!) is Good Morning, Midnight a novel by Lily Brooks-Dalton. This beautifully-written novel “combines mystery, science fiction and the classic adventure story,” and is described by The Washington Post as a “sparse post-apocalyptic novel that explores memory, loss and identity.” Ms. Dalton will speak in a community event on February 13. Our meeting featuring a program on a topic connected to the book is on Saturday, February 10.
Last, but not least, three new members joined our branch at our September meeting. They are: Cathy Croghan Alzner of Tualatin, Peggy Fleming of Lake Oswego, and Kris Schultz of Tigard. Please welcome them to your interest groups and at branch meetings!
Hope to see you soon!

primarily working for PR/marketing/advertising agencies and serving just about every type of client there is.
In Oregon, Marge and her husband enjoy the outdoors including kayaking, hiking and exploring. They also enjoy traveling and are working out their bucket list of places to go. They delight in being near their family and watching their grandson grow up. Marge joined the Lunch Bunch this summer, and pitched right in with other members to “cater” our summer event, Wine and Roses. Welcome, Marge!
New Member Profile:Marge Ransom
by Pat Squire
Margaret “Marge” Ransom joined our branch this summer after attending the tea last spring with her daughter, member Sharon Mirarchi. Marge and her husband Bill moved to Tigard two years ago to be near their daughter’s family, including a young grandson.
Marge grew up in Pennsylvania and graduated from University of Pittsburgh. She earned her master’s in teaching from Duquesne University. Marge taught high school English for a number of years in a small town called Mars, outside of Pittsburgh. She jokes about Mars and says their sports teams were the Planets, and there was a space ship at the playground for the little kids. When her daughter Sharon neared high school age, Marge was hesitant to teach her own daughter and/or her friends, and at that point, decided to make a career change.
After going back to school for her MBA, she spent 20 years in public relations and marketing communications,

Thank You from Scholarship Recipient
Dear AAUW Members,
I would like to thank you for the American Association of University Women Scholarship and opportunity to continue my education.
I am a single mom of three who had to make a decision to go back to school at the age of forty four. This was one of the decisions I had to make in order to be able to provide for my family. Without generous people like you that have the ability to see the potential in others, this would not have been possible.
I have received my Associates in Human Services and am currently pursuing my Bachelors in Human Studies. I am hoping to be able to continue on with a Masters in Art Therapy in hopes of enriching people's lives.
Thank you for your generosity, Nanette Dahlstrom
