New Tenant for LaganView!LaganView is delighted to welcome a new tenant to workshop unit 3, Lisburn South Streets Ahead Project. Lisburn PSP, a community development support organisation, launched this vital new project on 1st April 2011. This project is supported through the Big Lottery Fund’s Change UR Future programme.

The main aim of the project is to increase the personal and social development of marginalised young people in the Lisburn area by improving their health and education, skills and self-esteem.

Over 100 people in the local community attended the official launch which took place at the centre and it was encouraging to see such a good turnout. Partners include Old Warren Community Association, Hillhall Regeneration Group, Hilden Community Association and the Welcome Project.

Project Manager, Mr Adrian Bird, said: “This is a unique opportunity for Lisburn PSP to work in partnership with other like minded community and youth development organisations across the City of Lisburn. The project will help to build the confidence and skills of marginalised young people in the Lisburn area through increased participation,

effective youth provision and community capacity building.”

Also present at the launch of this new and exciting project were local MP Jeffrey Donaldson and the Mayor of Lisburn Alderman Paul

Porter, both of whom gave presentations fully supporting the project and its potential benefits.

LaganView has been nominated by The Mayor of Lisburn, Alderman Paul Porter, for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (formerly known as The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award) is given for outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who:• regularlydevotetheirtimetohelpingothersinthecommunity• improvethequalityoflifeandopportunityforothers• provideanoutstandingserviceThis is the highest national honour that can be bestowed upon groups of this kind. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service not only serves to provide recognition of volunteer groups, but also demonstrates the high respect in which volunteering is held.

We, at LaganView, believe the volunteers of Old Warren Community Association are the lifeblood of this community in Old Warren and without their commitment and dedication to LaganView, our centre would struggle to meet the demands of its users particularly at nights and weekends. We wish to thank the volunteers for all their hard work and efforts over the past few years, it does not go unnoticed!

LaganView would also like to thank The Mayor of Lisburn for his nomination, we are totally honoured to be nominated, it is such a great achievement for the centre and the Old Warren area. Winners will be announced in June 2011. Good luck to all the groups nominated in the Lisburn area!

Recycle All Your Unwanted Items

@ LaganView’s Clothing Bank!

This is just a reminder to all of you who are doing

a spring clear out that all your unwanted clothing,

shoes, bed linen etc would be greatly appreciated

here @ LaganView. Our yellow clothing bank is

situated in the back car park and in conjunction

with Solo Recycling the centre not only profits from

each bag left but items are then exported for sale in

second hand shops and markets in countries such

as Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine.

Since this initiative started in September 2010 so

far LaganView has profited from £140.00, all of

which has been used for community charitable

purposes. We would like to thank all those people

who have used the clothing bank and we hope that

this continues over the forthcoming months.

Miss it, miss out!

Development Trusts is a model for successful community regen-eration. Over 500 community organisations through-out the UK have used this approach to enable them to move towards financial sustainability. They operate on both urban and rural settings, often in neighbourhoods that have experienced the worst economic de-cline. They are community ‘anchor’ organisations, delivering serv-ices and facilities, finding solutions to local problems, and helping other organisations and initiatives succeed. They create wealth in communities – and help keep it there. A Development Trust is an organisation that is• Engaged in economic, environmental and social regeneration of a defined area• Independent, aiming for self-sufficiency, and not for profit• Community led, based, owned and managed• Actively involved in partnerships between the community, voluntary, private and public sectors

The core reason for success for many Development Trusts is: they aim to combine community led action with business expertise and experience, underpinned by a strong asset base to enable successful regeneration to occur and long term sustainability to be achieved.

The underlining reason for the success for many Development Trusts has been their ability to gain an Asset. An asset

can be a piece of land, and old building, a derelict site or even a community facility that is no longer in active use. Therefore com-munity organisations need to understand this new opportunity and how it can contribute to their future success. The aim for groups should be to have any identified asset transferred to them, either with little or no cost.

Development Trusts NI will be leading later this year a “Promoting Community Asset Transfer Programme”. It has been demonstrated by DTA Scotland and DTA England that the three greatest barriers for success in the transfer of assets is:• Political will• Officer imagination• Community capacity

Please let us know if you would like to attend future events concerning Asset Transfer.

Should you wish to hear more about setting up a Develop-ment Trust or you may be in the process of trying to ac-quire an asset, then please do contact us.
