According to a study fromXO Group Inc., creator ofwedding websites TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com, 350,000 destinationweddings take place annu-ally. This reflects a growingtrend of couples who want totailor their weddings to theirown personalities, even inexotic or unusual locales.

But as popular as des-tination weddings havebecome, couples who havehad such weddings can attestthat planning a destinationwedding is not necessarilyeasier than planning a moretraditional ceremony closeto home. Though destina-tion weddings can make formemorable affairs, there aresome factors couples mustconsider when mullingwhether or not to have a des-tination wedding.

Guest listThe XO Group study

found that destination wed-dings have an average of 86guests. When sitting downto organize their guest lists, many couples realize theyhave well over 100 guests ontheir lists. Such couples mayfind a destination weddingespecially difficult to pulloff, as resorts may or maynot be able to accommodatesuch a substantial number ofguests. In addition, coupleswho hope to invite childrento their weddings might wantto reconsider a destinationaffair, as those youngsters’parents will have to foot thebill for additional airfareand accommodations and, depending on when the wed-ding takes place, pull the kidsout of school for an extended

period of time. Couples withsmaller guest lists might finda destination wedding muchmore manageable than thosewhose guest lists crack tripledigits.

AccessibilityAccessibility is a common

concern for couples consid-ering destination weddings.Destination weddings typi-cally ask guests to travel farto attend the ceremony andreception, but there are waysto make that travel less ofan ordeal. When choosing alocation for their destinationweddings, couples shouldconsider the cost and con-venience of travel. Remoteislands are not very acces-sible, and as a result guestswill likely have to pay a prettypenny for their flights and

lodging. In addition, themore remote a destinationwedding locale is, the lessconvenient getting there fig-ures to be. Nonstop flightslikely won’t be a possibil-ity. Before choosing a localefor a destination wedding, research flights, making surethat affordable flights areavailable within spitting dis-tance of loved ones’ homesand that they won’t have tosuffer through multiple con-necting flights when travelingto and from the wedding.

WeatherWeather is another factor

couples must consider beforechoosing to have a destina-tion wedding. The XO Groupstudy found that 30 percentof American couples whohave destination weddings

choose to tie the knot outsideof the continental UnitedStates. That’s a distinct disad-vantage for couples who like-ly are not very familiar withweather patterns overseas.Couples who choose outdoorweddings close to home areoften familiar enough withlocal weather patterns tochoose a wedding date thatlikely won’t be interruptedby harsh weather. But choos-ing an overseas or distantlocale erases that comfortlevel, and couples may findthemselves worrying aboutstorms or other inclementweather conditions as theirwedding days draw nearer. Before choosing a locale fortheir destination weddings, couples should thoroughlyresearch each potential des-tination’s weather patterns.Brides, grooms and guests

alike don’t want to do all ofthat traveling only to endup indoors because it justsohappens to be tropicalstorm season.

CompetitionAs destination weddings

have grown in popularity, thecompetition for idyllic localesand top-notch venues hasincreased. That competitionis great for venue owners’bottom lines, but it might notbe so great for couples look-ing to keep their weddingcosts down. Costs might beconsiderably less in the off-season, but that’s also whenstorms and inclement weath-er tend to take hold, Book-ing a venue early can helpcouples mitigate some of thecosts of a destination wed-ding, but the growing popu-larity of destination wed-dings might make them outof reach for couples workingon tight budgets.

What does the concept of a wedding thememean to you?

Do you think it’s just about the colorsyou choose for your bouquet and bridesmaidgowns? Or do you think of it as somethinggrander — your personalized stamp thatshould shine through every aspect of yourbig day?

“Even the most romantic, unique themecan fail to live up to its potential if you onlyincorporate it into one or two aspects of yourwedding,” said Robin Brockelsby, founder ofCreative Coverings, one of the largest nation-wide linen rental and sales companies. “Trulysuccessful themes grace everything yourguests do, see and touch throughout yourwedding and reception.”

As you’re planning your wedding, keepthese theme-building tips in mind:

• Choose a theme and colors that you loveenough to invest some creativity in. Whileeach season, certain colors emerge as “hot”choices for weddings, avoid picking a color ortheme just because it’s trendy. Instead, focuson ideas that truly speak to your personality.

• Picking a wedding color doesn’t meanyou have to be limited to just one shade. Forexample, Brocklesby points out, purple is atrending color for weddings this year, and youcan incorporate variances of it throughoutyour wedding. “Lighter shades like lavenderand lilac are more feminine and sensitive, cre-ating a mood of romance,” she says. “They’rea great choice for bridesmaids’ gowns.” Addinterest to the color theme by using darkershades like plum or deep purples for table lin-ens and even lighting elements. “Using thesedarker shades can create an impression ofmagic, fantasy or extravagance,” Brocklesbysaid.

• If you do choose a trending color, con-sider renting accessories such as linens, chaircovers and decorations. Rental stores keeptrack of what’s trendy, too, and are more likelyto have items in the season’s hottest colors.Often, it’s easier to rent what you need thanto hunt through multiple stores trying to pur-chase items.

• When choosing a theme, be sure to con-sider if it really works with that gown youfell in love with and simply must have. For

example, a vintage theme cries out for a vin-tage gown and a dress that is too contempo-rary will clash with the theme. Tuxedoes forgroomsmen and stiletto heels for bridesmaidsaren’t likely to work well with a beach theme.

• Set the stage for your wedding withthemed invitations. Online resources makeit easy to find and customize wedding invita-tions to fit virtually any theme, from rusticto floral, country to contemporary. Themedinvitations are also a great way to clue guestsin to what they can expect on your specialday.

• Choose linens, tableware and furniturethat complement your theme. If the venueyou’ve booked doesn’t have items that arejust right, look into renting them. Rentingwedding items provide brides access to awider range of items that can fulfill virtuallyany theme, giving you greater flexibility andchoice. Plus, renting can save you money.

• Use creative favors to underscore yourtheme. For example, luggage tags in the shapeof flip flops make adorable wedding favors.Or, for your outdoor wedding with a pic-nic theme, miniature picnic baskets filledwith gourmet chocolates will remind guestsof your theme long after the reception ends.

• Remember to make music match yourtheme. Classical music will complement asophisticated, elegant wedding as you walkdown the aisle, but you might want to leavethe hip-hop for the reception. For a holidaywedding, traditional holiday music creates atimely and festive atmosphere that celebratesthe season and your nuptials at the sametime.

• Food and how you present it can alsoplay into your theme. Want a circus-themedwedding? Rent a popcorn maker or cotton-candy machine and serve to guests in waxpaper bags during the reception. Going for amore elegant, traditional theme? Silver chaf-ing dishes are classic musts.

Whatever theme you choose, all elementsof your wedding should harmoniously worktogether to proclaim your theme. A greattheme can turn any wedding into a memo-rable experience that guests will talk about foryears to come.
