South east division street is an up and coming neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. The history and surroundings of the place are important factors to keep in mind when given the oppurtunity to build on a vacant lot on this street. My design intentions for this lot are to provide housing that young families, couples, and individuals can aord who might possibly be trying to start a small business. The connectivity between residential and commercial space varies depending on the unit. This helps to appeal to a variety of potential residents ensuring that the businesses are unique from one another. How the residents approach and move through the building as well as making sure that the residents have adequate outdoor space were a few of the driving concepts behind the overall design at 24th and Division Street.

The Svensson family is in need of a summer and weekend retreat home located on a lake front property in western Oregon. They are looking to stay under 1200 square feet but would like to be able to accommodate at least 7 of their family members including an aunt and cousin. The family loves to bond in the kitchen and the youngest daughter loves to maintain a vegetable garden to help her dad out in the kitchen. The grandfather will be join-ing them quite often and has diculty navigat-ing stairs. The family loves art and photography very much and will most likely bringing some pieces from the Harlem Renaissance. The hope for this home is for every family member to get a break from their busy lives by enjoying the beautiful property and each other’s company.

The design intentions for this summer retreat was to create a large family space with emphasis on the cooking area so that the family can spend time together. Every room in the house has at least a glimpse of the lake with the hope being that it will draw the family out towards it. Another important factor was to keep most of the livable space on one level so that the grandfather would never feel isolated from one part of the house. The materials used and the orientation of the building will hopefully lower the impact the house has on the environment.

The designers hut was designed with Dieter Rams as the client. The hut was to be located next to the university of oregon's urban farm which is located on the Mill Race. The hut was to be used as a second studio for the the designers where they could go and connect with nature and be in an inspiring place. Much of the hut reects Dieter Rams' own industrial design work with the perforated walls to let in natural ventilation and the bold colors like the red. There is room for the designer to work, sleep, and eat. There is a tremendous amount of movable shelving for Dieter Rams to place his projects or ideas on as well as large movable walls that provide him with pin up space. The walls are movable to allow the space to feel bigger as well as to be able to hide the mess on the shelves when needed. The hut allows the designer to feel both sheltered as well as connected to the surrounding sight.

Experience of Description:Over the summer of 2014, I had the privilege to work under Charlotte VanValkenburg in Bend, Oregon. I was able to aide her on one of her housing projects by helping to complete a set of working drawings using AutoCad. The experience provided me with a better understanding of the signicance of a project's site, the importance of communication between designer and builder, and the amount of detail a set of working drawings need to provide to the builder. I also experienced the the diculties of meeting both structural codes and architectural review comittee standards.
