Lavalla, the name given to this magazine is taken fromthe village in France whereSt Marcellin Champagnat established the world’sfirst Marist school in 1817.There are now Maristschools in 80 countries.

EditorialDear Brothers, colleagues and friends

It could be a confusing moment for ouryoung people over these weeks as wecelebrate Easter-time with them at thesame time that we are marking thecentenary of the ill-executed Gallipoli campaign and thehorrendous carnage that then awaited the Australian soldiers inthe trenches of Belgium and northern France. It can be confusingalso for us.

In the sixteen centuries since St Augustine famously preachedthat “we are Easter people and Alleluia! is our song”, it has neverbecome an easy thing to reconcile, in the here and now, theimpact of evil and wrongness in our lives with the primaryevangelion that a God whose essence is love is at the heart of ourworld, a God who brings us life in its fullness. We all have had theexperience of the emptiness of words and the absence ofexplanation when faced with an untimely death or an undeservedhurt. The very moments where we should be singing ‘Alleluia!’ arethose where it can be hardest to do so.

The Marist way, like all paths of Christian spirituality, seeks to givepeople accessible and inspiring means for allowing the Gospel toshape their lives, for helping them to never to lose the melody of‘Alleluia’. It does so, like all others, by interplaying three elements:guiding people in their personal faith journeys, providing themwith a Christian community context for doing this, and givingthem concrete opportunities for serving one another – especiallythose most in need of faith, hope and love. Aligned with theintuitions of Saint Marcellin, we Marists look especially to thecontext of the Catholic school for doing that.

A flick through the pages that follow, as through those of ourschools’ annual magazines, reveals lots of happy faces, studentsand teachers engaged in productive learning, and manyinteresting projects and activities. We need, however, to lookbehind those faces and to plumb more deeply into those activitiesif we are to appreciate what is really happening. From the time ofMarcellin, the project of the Marist school, was always aboutsomething more profound than only academic teaching andlearning, although it was certainly that as well. It was aboutevangelisation. It remains so.

We teach young people that to make ‘Alleluia!’ the song of theirlives, is not to foster some happy-clappy, cruisey or shallowlyemotive approach to life. That will not carry them through theinevitable buffeting, betrayals and battles that will punctuate theiryears. Nor will it give a purpose and a vision that is sustaining andlife-giving. We show them how to take up a song of the heart,and we do that most powerfully through our own singing of it.

A large crowd of invited guests, parentsand students enjoyed a very family-oriented celebration of the latest chapterof Marist presence in Bendigo thatbegan in 1893. Br. Michael Green openedthe building while Bishop Les Tomlinsonblessed the site. Guests were treated tovarious presentations by Principal MrDarren McGregor and student reflectionson the beginnings.

A Student’s PerspectiveA New Way of LearningThe first day of school at Marist CollegeBendigo was nervous for everyone.Students, parents and even teachers. Ourprincipal, Mr. McGregor, led an openingassembly and taught us about the Maristvalues of Humility, Simplicity andModesty. We celebrated our new Maristbeginnings and were welcomed to ournew school. However, the first day flewby and so did the first week. It was a bitchaotic not knowing where all thelearning spaces were and what subjectwe had next, but after three weekseverything was calm.

Marist has a new learning style which isvery cool. It allows you to work at yourown pace independently and within agroup. Importantly it gives us choicesabout what we learn and how we learn.We can work in different areas anddifferent spaces, such as the tall whiteboard tables, the thinking cave or the

conference rooms. It gives us abit of freedom but we still get workdone.

Learning at Marist College Bendigo isdifferent but exciting. AustralianCurriculum Projects 1 and 2 are a vitalpart of our learning. For instance, rather

than going to a science class, we learnabout science through our projects. Theprojects combine many subjects. Theyear 8 topic this term in ACP2 isRenaissance Italy. Within this topic weare learning about the history,

geography, art, science andculture of that period. Asstudents we have found this

way of learning more interesting as itprovides us with the responsibility ofchoosing the parts of the project thatinterests us the most.

Another difference at Marist CollegeBendigo is that instead of separateclasses we have small groups such as our1:14 as well as triads and clusters. In our1:14 group we have one teacher, or aswe like to say educator, and fourteenstudents. Our 1:14 educator helps uslearn, organise ourselves and ourtimetables and looks after our wellbeing.We meet every morning and at the endof the week to ensure that we’re keepingon top of things. We can learn in triads(three 1:14 groups) or clusters (four 1:14groups) if needed. Our learning spaces

are shared with the both year levelsand even though we may be in smallor large groups. This allows us to get toknow other students better as well ashaving different people in our groupsto our 1:14.

In the coming years the college willintroduce a new year level each yearuntil in 2017 when we will havestudents from prep to year 10. In 2019our first year 12 students will graduate.We are creating a new MaristCommunity based on those corevalues that Mr. McGregor taught us onour first day. It will be exciting asstudents to be part of all of these newbeginnings and the future of MaristCollege Bendigo.

In our evaluation survey, 72% ofparticipants rated the overall experienceas ‘Excellent’ (with a further 23% ratingas ‘Good’). 90% rated the atmosphere as‘Excellent’, 94% rated the music as‘Excellent’, and 90% would want toattend another MYF within the next twoyears! This overwhelming responsesimply matches the enthusiastic, buzzingatmosphere that we could feel so manytimes during the Festival.

Keynote addresses were a source ofinspiration and new perspectives. BrEmili Turu, Superior General of the MaristBrothers, challenged the participants toadopt a Marial approach to life, throughservice, sorority and silence: “To be Maristtoday is to be grounded in prayer andaction. Contemplation and a spirit ofinteriority are the foundations of anyChristian life which nurtures our desire forservice and justice”. Keynotes were also

given by Sr Brigid Arthur, educator andrefugee advocate; Laura John, Australianyouth ambassador to the United Nations;Fr Peter Day, founder of “HOME” inQueanbeyan, a home for people withchronic mental illness; and Kate Fogarty,Principal of Assumption College, Kilmore.

Workshops held during MYF invitedparticipants to delve deeper into issuesof faith and social justice, includinghealthy relationships, justice fordeveloping nations and the poor, justicefor young people at risk, advocacy, andenvironmental justice. Workshops alsointroduced opportunities forvolunteering, overseas immersions, andto connect with the broader Maristcommunity.

MYF was also a celebration of our faithand offered a range of dynamic worshipexperiences throughout. Highlights

included “Evening Prayer with Songsfrom Taizé”, when we gathered in prayer,song and silence around the Taizé Cross,the Icon of Mary and the Marist heart,calling on God to renew our hearts inlove. The transformative theme of MYFclimaxed on the final evening, with theFestival Eucharist, celebrated by BishopPeter Ingham from Wollongong Diocese.This mass was followed by a vibrantpraise and worship session, led by Fr RobGalea, his band, and Genevieve Bryant.So many participants commented onhow they were deeply moved on thisspirit-filled night.

These are only highlights from a hugelysignificant time in our Marist family. Atime where young people have felt thatthey have a home in the Church. It’sbeen a time where young people havenourished their relationship with God, inboth heart and mind, and opened upnew possibilities for their lives,communities and the world.

MARIST YOUTH FESTIVAL 2015

In January we experienced the first national Marist Youth Festival (MYF) in the Marist Brothers Province ofAustralia. MYF took place from 12 to 15 January with the theme: ‘JUST Living: Hearts without Borders’. It broughttogether 180 young people from every state and territory, including 89 Marist senior students from 25 differentschools and 75 young adults. Participants stayed at Sancta Sophia College, Camperdown; with main events heldat the Australian Technology Park, Eveleigh.

Making the impossible possible…Project Managers in the Pacific Islands receive a boost!The humidity of the Pacific Islandsbeckoned as Marist Solidarity embarked onthe first steps toward a more formalpartnership with Marist projects in theDistrict of the Pacific. Over two days BrAllen Sherry, Executive Director of MaristSolidarity, and Ashley Bulgarelli,Volunteering and Projects Coordinator,worked closely with eleven of Fiji,Kiribati, Samoa and New Zealand’sdevelopment project managers on“Effective Funding for Mission”.

The two-day workshop started with anintroduction to Marist Solidarity and tothe newly developing arm – MaristVolunteers Australia, which includedschool immersions. Fiji currently hostsfour immersion groups each year whilstKiribati and Samoa are working towardsimmersions later in the year.

The workshop then moved onto types offunders, project cycle management andthen onto the 14 step project proposalwriting methodology. Each countries’

representatives were grouped together asthey focused on a real-life project in theirschool and how to write a strong proposalfor this project. St Louis High School inKiribati highlighted their need for a newcomputer lab and the rebuild of a two-storey building, which was destroyed ina fire last year. Through the workshopthey received one-on-one support andnow feel that the project is achievable.

There were many positive outcomes toarise from the workshop and it has giventhese project managers the tools toaccess funding and develop theirprojects. It was especially useful formany of the younger Brothers who werenew to these processes and to servicesoffered by Marist Solidarity.

Fijian, Br Luke Fong, has plans to build asmall patio area at his community house,which is located next to Marist BrothersHigh School, Suva. The project has beenon hold for some time as he did notknow how to access funding. Now that

he has the tools to do so, Br Luke isplanning how he and Br Borerei canengage the Marist youth in a relaxed,community setting.

The Samoan representatives from StJoseph’s College and Marist BrothersPrimary School have very similar needs.They both have poorly equipped sciencelabs and both spend large amounts ofmoney purchasing water for the school.Through the workshop they identifiedthese two issues and are currentlyplanning a first submission for watertanks and guttering for their buildings sothey can harvest the abundance ofrainfall and reduce costs.

The seemingly unachievable ideas thatthese project managers have had cannow be realised and we are very thankfulfor the opportunity to be involved in thedevelopment of the District of the Pacific.

Working for the eradication of Leprosy, Timor-Leste

Lavalla

In a country where leprosy hassupposedly been eradicated we aresupporting the CIJ (Congregation of theImitation of Jesus) Sisters working with21 leprosy patients on a regular basis atthe St Damian Clinic. These patients arefrom the Newtown, Baucau region aloneso it is difficult to know the true extentof the disease. The CIJ Sisters alsoprovide education for the localcommunity on health, hygiene andprevention and treatment of leprosy.Though they carry out much neededwork for the region the clinic has been

forced to relocate and rebuild.

This year we are calling upon MaristSchools across Australia to support theSt Damian Clinic as one of four keyinitiatives this year. Sister Yohana isgrateful for the support that Maristsacross Australia are providing for theredevelopment of the clinic. To donate,contact us or visit our website:

Marist Volunteers AustraliaMarist Volunteers Australia (MVA)continues to grow with nineopportunities currently available acrossAsia and the Pacific.

Most recently Max Aichinger, 2014graduate of Marist College Canberra, hasjust returned to Australia after spendingtwo months living and volunteering at

the Marist Homework Centre in Kalpitiya,Sri Lanka. Max writes:

“The experience of working at the MaristNiwasa Homework Centre opened myeyes to how valued and sought after theresource of education is. In a challengedsociety, where access to a good

education is difficult, it was incredible tosee the enthusiasm and passion of thekids to learn and realise their goal ofuniversity and break out of a life offishing which strongly dominates thelifestyle of Kalpitiya. Having also had theopportunity to visit and experience thelocal schools, I saw firsthand thechallenges faced in this pursuit ofeducation. The Marist Niwasa HomeworkCentre does some great work in offeringthese kids a great level of extraeducation that tremendously benefitsthe children and the hopes and dreamsthey have for their future.”

Nearly 700 people gathered at the Palladium at CrownCasino for the dinner where 20 alumni from various walksof life were inducted into the college’s Hall of Excellence.Assumption’s greatest ever VFL/AFL team was alsonamed. MC for the night was media personality BrianTaylor and awards were presented by Victoria’s DeputyPremier and Education Minister James Merlino.

Among those named in the Hall of Excellence wereShane Crawford, Francis Bourke, Simon O’Donnell, film-maker Fred Schepisi, Bishop Emeritus of Ballarat PeterConnors, National basketballer Gabrielle Richards andCollingwood vice-president Dr Jack Kennedy. Philosopher MaxCharlesworth received a posthumous award.

Neale Daniher (Essendon), Francis Bourke (Richmond), BillyBrownless (Geelong) Peter McCormack (Collingwood), MichaelBarlow (Freemantle) and Dion Prestia (Gold Coast) were amongthe 26 names in the VFL/AFL team.

Assumption College, Kilmore honoured someof its outstanding former students, from the1930s to the 2000s at a gala dinner inMelbourne on February 28.

Around 700 people gathered at thePalladium at Crown for the big night.

ACK’s long-time football and cricket coach Ray Carroll, whoretired in 2011, received a standing ovation. He describedNeale Daniher, who is suffering from motor neurone disease,as the finest player the college has produced.

Celebrating the Year of Consecrated Life- Wake Up the World!One could easily get the feeling thatevery time Pope Francis prepares to pena pastoral letter, he starts with a coupleof double-shot espressos and a few HailMary’s. At least that’s what it feels like inreading the passion and zing behindsome of his spiritual reflections!

The Pope’s recent Apostolic letter toReligious women and men at the outsetof the Year of Consecrated Life, whichthe Church is celebrating during 2015, isa classic case in point: “Wake up theworld! Be witnesses of a different way ofdoing things, of acting, of living! It ispossible to live differently in this world!”

This bold ‘game plan’ from our life coachand Chief Shepherd seems to hold threeinvitations: Firstly, for religious men andwomen to not just look back on the pastwith gratitude but to live the present withpassion and embrace the future with hope;Secondly, for each of us to reflect on how weare called to be a disciple of Christ and findour vocation by walking a unique path ofholiness; Thirdly, for young people toseriously consider taking take up theinvitation to a radical way of following Jesusin Religious Life; through prayer, communityand service to people on the margins,especially the young.

As we celebrate this special year in theChurch, the Marist Vocations Team has hitthe road again, visiting Marist Schools acrossAustralia, attending regional Contact andExchange Nights and conducting MaristForums for students in Years 11 and 12. Wegladly accept those schools who welcomeus, to share with students and staff a little ofthe ‘Good News’ about Marist life andvocation, in all its richness and diversity. Welook forward to visiting a Marist school nearyou and help support you in educating andnurturing the future Marists of tomorrow.

Anniversaries at Newman

As part of the College’s 50th Anniversarycelebrations, 85 men who werefoundation students at Marist SeniorCollege when it opened its doors atChurchlands in 1965 were invited backto the College for a 50th reunion. Manyof these had not been back to thecampus for 50 years and were overjoyedto reconnect and reminisce with theirformer classmates over drinks andcanapés in the Newman Sports Complex.

The evening began with former studentstaking the opportunity to tour thecampus. Many were stunned at thechanges that have occurred over the 50years, for the school was originally onefour storey building (the current CBlock).  In 1965 the top floor was mainlydormitory areas; the middle two floors

were all classrooms; and the bottomfloor was the kitchen, laundry andrefectory.

To complete this special evening threeformer teachers also attended – DesTuck (formerly known as BrotherBernardine), Peter Collins and PeterMcGowan. Fascinating stories werefondly recalled, including planting ofthe grass on the football field, playingpranks on the boarders, hiding “grog”in the creek so the Brothers wouldn’tfind it and having to wear moccasinsto minimise wear and tear on theschool’s brand-new linoleum floors.

The sense of pride and admirationpeople had for their time at MaristSenior College was overwhelming.Relationships were rekindled, with

many promising to catch-up on a moreregular basis – not leaving it 50 yearsbetween gatherings!  

While we were celebrating a mere 50years on the Churchlands Campus, a

story of Jesus restoring sight and the

contemporary story of the little boywho made a difference in the life of asingle starfish by throwing it backinto the water, to remind them thatall individuals can make a positivedifference in the lives of others.Students will be proudly wearingtheir ‘starfish’ badges as an outwardsign of their commitment to makinga difference to those around them.

member of our Newman CollegeCommunity, Br Noel Hickey, wascelebrating his 90th birthday. 

Br Noel is a remarkable man, aninspiration to us all, both physically andspiritually.  He was born in Boulder in1925.  Later in that year the familymoved to Perth.  Noel grew up in thearea where Newman College is nowsituated.  In 1936 he commenced fiveyears of Secondary education at StIldephonsus College New Norcia whichwas conducted by the Marist Brothers.During this time he was inspired by hisMarist teachers, one of whom was BrCletus Read, Founding Principal ofNewman College at Churchlands.  Helater joined the Brothers. The youngNoel was a very fine athlete, particularlyas a middle distance runner where he setrecords which stood for many years.  In1942 he embarked on a five day traintrip from Perth to Sydney and enteredthe Marist training centre in Mittagongin the Southern Highlands of NSW.  Thiswas the beginning of over 70 years ofservice as a Marist Brother. 

A teacher of physics and chemistry, BrNoel has taught in metropolitan andrural schools in Western Australia andVictoria, worked as Novice Master atMacedon and served in various centresin Papua New Guinea and the SolomonIslands, both as a teacher andadministrator.

In later years he has been a member ofthe Brothers community at NewmanCollege in Perth where he continues toassist with the activities of students inour Education Support Centre.

PROFILE: recalling past leaders Brother Ignatius O’Connor

“…this man of God led the school toremarkable achievements”.

Brother Igntius joined the MaristBrothers in 1908. After his novitiate hespent more than ten years teaching firstat the novitiate, and then at thejuniorate in Mittagong. He was thenposted to St Joseph’s College in Hunter’sHill where he completed a Bachelor ofArts and a Bachelor of Economics whileteaching full-time and supervisingboarders. He was appointed Principal ofMarcellin College in Randwick from 1932to 37. Following a year back at Hunter’s

Hill where he was commissioned to

raise funds for the building of St

Joseph’s Chapel, he undertook the

Second Novitiate in Europe and was

then appointed the first Principal of

Ashgrove. Shortly afterwards he

suffered a major heart attack and was

confined to bed for the last five years

of his life. He was only 53 when he

died on 19th March 1949.

Archbishop Duhig of Brisbane

presided at his funeral.

him as a teacher, reverenced him as a

religious, and loved him as a friend”.

MARIST EDUCATION PROJECT: MITTAGONG

Down on the FarmIn March we began a great teachingrelationship with TAFE NSW. 20 studentsfrom TAFE in Goulburn and Moss Valecame to our farm today for work withthe beef herd for credit towards aCetificate III in Agriculture. The photosshow Craig Thomas our Agent fromLandmark Moss Vale instructing on howto vaccinate cows and calves. 2 TAFEteachers, Craig and Br AnthonyRobertson conducted the teachingprogram. TAFE are keen to continueworking with us and we are very happy

to oblige them. Our farm continues toeducate a broad range of students in avariety of ways.

We also had great success with theMarist La Valla Limousin Stud recently.Our prize bull, La Valla Jerome wonGrand Champion Limousin Bull andChampion overall Beef Bull at the CastleHill Show. Jerome now heads to SydneyRoyal Show. He is seen pictured herebeing judged and then with a proudowners representatives!

ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE HUNTER’S HILL

Joeys breaks 42-year Head of the River droughtAfter a 42-year drought St Joseph’sCollege, Hunters Hill made a mightycome back at Head of the River on 7March with a total of six wins, threesecond placed crews and one thirdplaced crew.

The premier event of the day, the SchoolFirst VIII, had not been won by StJoseph’s since 1973. In recent years thecollege has focused on building depthwithin its rowing program, increasingthe numbers of strong and skilled rowersacross the year groups. The results of thiswork were clearly evident at theconclusion of the Head of the River, withJoeys finishing on the podium in 10 ofthe 11 events.

Supporting the crews at the SydneyInternational Regatta Centre were a largeand enthusiastic contingent of family,friends, staff and Old Boys as well as theentire student body of St Joseph’sCollege.

Headmaster of St Joseph’s, Mr RossTarlinton, said the school communitywas incredibly proud of all the crews.“This is a tremendous achievement forthe College and a very proud momentfor us all,” he said. “Every student at theCollege was present to support therowers and acknowledge their incrediblehard work and commitment to thisdemanding sport.”

“I congratulate the competitors and theircoaches on their success at Head of theRiver and thank them for theirdedication throughout the rowingseason,” Mr Tarlinton said.

The coach of the First VIII, Mr MichaelLane, is an Old Boy of St Joseph’s,finishing in 1986. “Michael hascertainly set a mark in the history ofthe College,” said Mr Tarlinton. “I haveno doubt he has been waiting for thismoment since he was a student atJoeys.”

NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT OF THE PACIFIC…Marist Charism Workshop at KiribatiTeachers CollegeA number of Catholic Teacher Traineesrecently attended a session on our Maristcharism. The aims of the session were:

1. To make teacher trainees aware of StMarcellin Champagnat’s charism.

2. To relate some aspects of the fivepillars to their daily lives

3. To localise the charism and pillars byidentifying its proper Kiribati word.

MYSTICS AND PROPHETSRecently a group of Marists participated ina three-day seminar held in the under-croft at St Patrick's in Church Hill – theoriginal parish church for the Marist Brotherswho came to Australia in 1872. The church

is still administered by the Marist Fathers.The original St Patrick’s School that theBrothers taught in until the 1960s wasrelocated to Dundas and is now known asSt Patrick’s College. The seminar was

On 22 November 2014, a group of excited but scared SacredHeart College Year 11 students boarded planes to India, Fijiand the Philippines to embark on an Immersion Experience.Having fund-raised for the past year, the students could not beprepared for what would be one of the most confronting,emotional and incredible experiences they’ve undertaken intheir lives so far.

The summary from the Philippines Team is indicative of theexperiences of all three groups:

To put it simply, it was amazing. We were immersed in culture,people and a lot of rice and bananas (not kidding, breakfast,lunch and tea). The majority of our time was spent with childrenand although we were supposed to be there to teach them about

Australian culture, they had a lot more to teach us, showing ustheir way of life and their unconditional love for their families andus as their guests. We visited orphanages, street centres,participated in a homestay and went to several schools andengulfed ourselves in the Filipino ways. We stayed with the Maristbrothers and were accompanied by Brother Des on majority of ourtrips to various places around the Philippines.

While it was confronting witnessing extreme poverty and beingamongst people with little to nothing, the people we came acrosswere what made the experience so enriching, they were thehappiest people we’ve ever met despite their living conditions. Ourvalues and perspectives were completely redefined by the time wereached home base back in Australia. We are all so grateful for thepeople who made this experience possible and those who made itso memorable and fulfilling, and certainly recommend applying ifyou are a year eleven student.

A key focus of the event is having students understand thatthey are part of a wider, global Marist family, and that theMarist Mission of ‘making Jesus Christ known and loved’ is notan ancient Mission of 200 years ago, but is a real, living missionthat all Marists are called to live.

NEW PROVINCIAL OF AUSTRALIAOn January 15, the SuperiorGeneral, Brother Emili Turúand his Council, appointedBr Peter Carroll as the newProvincial of Australia. Hewill take up his post duringthe Provincial Chapter tobe held in October.

Br Peter was born in 1958,he completed his secondaryeducation at Marist College

Ashgrove and joined the MaristBrothers in 1977. His post-novitiatestudies were completed at MacquarieUniversity in Sydney, and his post-graduate studies were taken at the

Australian Catholic University. Between

1984 and 2012, Br Peter was a teacher

in a number of schools, and spent

fifteen years as a Principal of three of

our colleges: two in New South Wales

and one in his native Queensland.

Since 2003, Br Peter has been a

member of the Provincial Council, and

more recently he has been the Vice-

Provincial, assisting the current

Provincial, Br Jeffrey Crowe.

We congratulate Br Peter, we thank

him for his generosity and availability,

and we wish him well as he prepares

to move into this important role.

MASTER TEACHERBrother Patrick Howlett, Principal atParramatta Marist High School inWestmead, New South Wales, hasearned the internationally recognizeddistinction of Kappa Delta Pi MasterTeacher of Honor.

Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) is an InternationalHonor Society in Education. Founded in1911 at the University of Illinois, USA,KDP aims to foster excellence ineducation and promote fellowshipamong those dedicated to teaching. Forover a century, KDP has grown tobecome an international organizationwith a membership that exceeds 1.2million educators.

Master Teacher of Honor recipients arepracticing educators who have 15 ormore years of professional experience.The award is judged upon specificcriteria including evidence ofprofessional growth; leadership; a recordof community service; and outstandingcontributions to the educationprofession. The designation also requiresreaffirmation of the educator’scommitment to integrity and highstandards in the classroom.

Brother Patrick Howlett has 50 years ofexperience in education, the last 25 ofwhich as a principal in Catholic Schools inSydney. He joined the staff at ParramattaMarist as Principal in 2002. In 2005,concerned with his students’ engagementin curriculum, Br. Patrick took sabbaticalleave to find the best educational practicesdomestically and abroad. This research

and consultation lead to the introductionof Project-Based Learning in 2008 for Year9 (later extended to Years 7, 8, and 10),Problem-Based Learning in 2010 calledOne-Five-One for Year 11, and FlippedLearning in 2013 for Year 12 at ParamattaMarist, the success of which garnered local,national, and international mediaattention. In 2012, Br. Howlett wasawarded a Papal Honor, the Croce ProEcclesia et Pontifice, by Pope Benedict XVI.It is the highest recognition awarded to amember of a religious order.

I am sure all Australian Marists will join incongratulating Brother Pat in receivingthis deserved honor and recognition.

From 16-18 February, agroup of nurses andcarers from theBrothers’ communitiesat Ashgrove, Randwick,Hunters Hill andCampbelltowngathered at theHermitage, Mittagong,to reflect upon theirshared Marist missionof care and health

support. During these three days they were given input and time to reflect upon the Marist context that they find themselves intheir care of the Brothers. The Hermitage ‘walking tour’ including a visit to the Brothers’ cemetery provided a wonderfulopportunity for shared reflections and prayers for deceased brothers that were known to them. The remainder of the conferenceaddressed the professional issues of Depression and Anxiety (Felicity Meehan) and Dementia (Pam Davis, Alzheimer’s Australia).While most were familiar with these areas of care, the input provided a great ‘refresher’ in how best to handle these issues. In thewords of three of the participants: The Conference is our oxygen. It is a chance to share, laugh and to be reaffirmed in the work we do …A great learning experience for me in the Marist way and understanding of the Brothers I assist. New ways of thinking about clinicalissues. Reaffirming care needs of listening and taking time. A strong sense of family and working together with a common purpose … Theinsight into the Brothers way of life. Gave good understanding to the background and formation of the Marist Brothers.

Lavalla is a three story complexincorporating 14 general learning areas,4 science laboratories and a hospitalitykitchen. Francois is the new boardingresidence for senior male students. “Theproject drew funding from three majorsources and was the culmination ofseven years of planning under theleadership of three College Principals,”said John Doolan, the Deputy Principal.

There is $7.4 million invested by theState government in the two buildings,part of which came about as a result of

the Flying Start funding that the

Queensland Government was putting

towards the arrival of the Year 7 students

and the rest as a result of a Block Grant

Application to Queensland Catholic

Education Commission. The regular

flooding of J Block helped to gain the

second dimension of the State funding.

In addition to this, the Federal

Government contributed $1.1 million forthe trade training kitchen and facilities.The College has contributed $750,000dollars, which is a loan over a ten-yearperiod.

The Trade Training funding resultedfrom the college joining a consortium ofschools: St Mary’s Catholic College (LeadSchool), St Stephen’s Catholic College,

BuildingsMount St Bernard College and GoodCounsel College. The official opening ofthese facilities will occur at the leadschool (St Mary’s) during Term Two.

The initial conceptual ideas began in2007, under Principal Brother MichaelGreen, as part of the College strategicplan to provide a flood proofcontemporary teaching block for theCollege. This vision expanded in 2009 totake in the option for the College to beinvolved in the Diocesan Trade TrainingCentre project.

It continued under Brother Bill Sullivan,where again the vision was expanded totake in the need for additional facilitiesto cater for Year 7 joining the College in2015, in both the day school andboarding.

Final design and construction began interm 4 2013 after the demolition of J-block along Scott St and was completedin 2014 under the current CollegePrincipal, Brother Darren Burge, withclasses and boarders moving into thenew facilities in January this year. Theend result is an impressive addition tothe College landscape that caters for anadditional 130 students in the schoolwith cutting edge facilities and space.

Mr Czek Kersevani, Head ofCollege Promotions, saidthat “the new 3 storyLavalla Building housesstate of the art technologywith touch interactiveprojectors and wireless inall classrooms and the latest design inscience laboratories.” It is now a floodfree building something of a noveltygiven that previous buildings on the sitewere subject to annual flooding. Lifts toeach floors allow easy access forstudents with disabilities.”

The Francois Residence caters for 36senior students each with their ownroom and study area. It really sets thebenchmark for future boarding schoolresidences.

New Professional Learning CommunityOur Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College in Alice Springs is following modern educational practice to bringteaching and learning into the 21st century. The traditional classroom is giving way to open spaces, digital learninghubs, sliding glass walls and a plant filled open Atrium.

The school has implemented an enquirybased learning method modelled onsimilar education programs in the UnitedStates and operational in Sydney andAdelaide where students work in groupsof five or six and use technology toconnect with the world and onlinelearning resources. OLSH Staff visitedParramatta Marist High School andAdelaide schools to see the programs inaction.

This modern teaching method ispossible thanks to the school’s multi-million dollar refurbishing of classroomsand a new open learning building at theOLSH Traeger Campus.

Construction of the new buildingconsisting of four new classrooms, two

learning commons and a breakoutAtrium for the Year 8 students plus therefurbishment of four classrooms for theYear 7 students, will integratetechnology as a focal point of thestudents’ learning. The Infrastructure willbe set up for digital, mobile learningworkstations plus planned and designedfor the future expansion.

Alongside this development is theconstruction of a new car park and stafffacilities.

The new dynamic learning space will bethe foundation for a Personal LearningCommunity with learners working insmall groups communicating andcollaborating in self-directed enquirylearning.

The friendly openness of the design andthe break out area of an internal gardenwill foster a safe and encouragingenvironment and nurture the wholeperson.

The program teaches students to thinkand to adapt into the information ageenvironment.

A project topic leads into many differentcurriculum areas such as geography,environmental science, religiouseducation, mathematics and English.

It is also an important step towardsallowing learners to engage with theirpeers and a variety of teachers. Studieshave found that when students areengaged and happy that they learn at

The program is already kickinggoals at the Traeger Campus.

The essential skills of literacy andnumeracy continue to be taughtseparately and they are also practicallyintegrated into the students projectwork.

Now that every student at OLSH fromYear 7 to 12 has a digital device it isessential to accommodate this into theteaching practice. The device roll out willbe extended to Year 5 and that hasimplications for new learning spaces forYear 5 and 6 going into the future.

Head of Campus Mr Tony Healey says,“We are creating a collaborative learningenvironment where high expectationsare set for all learners. We are teachingthem to be critical thinkers in their realworld”.

Commercial Kitchen Now OpenTrinity’s new Commercial Kitchen was completed on 27thFebruary.

This fantastic modern facility is providing industry standardcommercial kitchen and equipment, as well as a newclassroom space for delivery of theory lessons.

Students have commenced studies in VET HospitalityCertificate II in Kitchen Operations in the new facility withgreat gusto.

In this course, students will gain the practical skills needed towork in a Commercial Kitchen, learning food preparation andpresentation skills as well as some basic cooking methods.

All students have been issued with a full chef’s uniform, atool kit and a textbook. This program will provide studentswith the skills and knowledge to be competent in a range ofkitchen activities within hospitality establishments. Studentswill complete 70 hours of a mandatory work placement. VETin Schools courses enable students to earn credit towards arecognised VET qualification while completing the higherschool certificate.

Studying hospitality allows an array of opportunities to traveland experience the world in many unique and exciting roles.The hospitality class is very honoured to be the first group tomake use of such an amazing College facility and we lookforward to a great year.

Academic and extra-curricular success

Red Bend Catholic College graduate Kurt Lovett has received thegreatest honour at the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges annualsports awards, winning the Vince Villa Award for the mostoutstanding male athlete. The award is the most prestigioussports award in the NSW Catholic College system and Kurt’s winis even more significant because he is the first personto receive it from the Bathurst or Wilcannia ForbesDioceses. Kurt attended the sports awards ceremonyknowing he was receiving a Blue Award forrepresenting the NSW Combined Catholic College sideand All Schools side in hockey and touch football butnot expecting to win the major award.

Fellow Red Bend Catholic College student, AmyDraper, who is currently in year 12, was alsorecognised at the ceremony with a Blue Award for herefforts and dedication to touch football, refereeing atstate and national level.

2014 was a busy and productive year for Red Bend Catholic College, Forbes with manyacademic and extra-curricular successes.2014 was a very successful year for our Year 12’s. Sixteenstudents were recognised as Distinguished Achievers as theyachieved 36 Band 6s across 17 separate courses. The CollegeDux for 2014 was Yvette Quinn with an ATAR of 96.8.

Kate Sandford a Top Achiever commendation for anoutstanding result in Primary Industries, where she wasplaced 3rd in the state. This follows Kate’s success at the2014 WorldSkills Australia Competition where she wasawarded gold for Primary Industries.

MARIST-SION COLLEGE WARRAGUL

The Religious Education classrooms at Marist-Sion College Warragul are now home to anew set of prayer tables, designed and madeby the Product Design and Technologyclasses of the College. Commissioned by theReligious Education Learning Area, the tableswere designed to look aesthetically pleasingand to function as a centrepiece for prayer inthe classrooms, the chapel and the staffroom.Technology teachers Peter Coghlan, LukeDicker and their students took great pride in

designing seven new tables, andorganising their construction.

The tables were influenced by the originaltable built by Marcellin Champagnat inL’Hermitage; the house for the early MaristBrothers in Lavalla, France, and the designfor each echoes the style of the Marcellintable. The installation of the prayer tablesat our College has been a great way forstaff to emphasise the early history of theMarist Brothers, and tell the story of

Marcellin’s own table. It is a tangiblereminder for the students, as they gatheraround their classroom table for prayer,that the table which Marcellin and hisBrothers made for their first home wasbuilt because they needed a placearound which they could gather. We areable to explain to our students that, justas everyone was welcome at Marcellin’stable, we too make room at our owntable for all people, from all walks of life.
