FROM RABBI WISE
T he beauty of the high holydays is enhanced by so many things. The uplifting music from Aviva and our
choir, the community gathered together in large numbers, the holiness of the day as our chance to engage with the divine. All of these elements are held together by the mahzor that we hold in our hands that guide us through both the keva, the fixed prayers, and the kavannah, the prayers of our hearts. I am so excited to announce that after close to 8 years of planning, writing, experimenting and drafting, the new Reform Mahzor – Mishkan Henefesh “the sanctuary of the soul” has arrived. Our synagogue wisely pre-ordered the prayerbooks at a significant discount so they would be ready for us this summer.
What makes this mahzor special? A few years ago Rabbis, Cantors and Educators were invited to participate in the creation of it and I volunteered to be a part of one committee that researched and wrote com-mentary to the prayers that will appear on the bottom of each page. There were dozens of us involved with the creation of the book, along with hundreds of laypeople who prayed from earlier drafts (including here at SBE two years ago) and sent along feedback to the editors. The mahzor features a plurality of theologies and perspec-tives by including con-temporary Israeli poetry, texts for private reflec-
tion and new composed prayers for todays worshippers. It will look very similar to the Mishkan Tefillah we use on Shabbat with a two page spread design. The translations are poetic and readable with attention to gender equality. There are additional Torah reading options and the Yom Kippur vol-ume has many newly conceived options for mincha, avoda and neilah.
As you can tell I am very excited and most importantly, everyone in the room will finally be on the same page. While in the past each congregant bought a copy, these books will be kept at the shul but we invite you to take the opportunity to dedi-cate a mahzor for you and each of your family members. For a donation of $36, the name and dedication of your choosing will be inscribed on a bookplate inside the front cover. You may also purchase a copy to keep at home, for $54. Donations will be accepted starting May 1st. Please con-tact the Synagogue Office to make your Makhzor Book Plate Inscription donation.

We had tremendous momentum in our religious school this past year. We almost tripled our school numbers and managed to maintain a successful experiential approach to learning. It is because of our committed and dedicated families that we were able to do this. Thank you to those who donated to our religious school cam-paign this past year which helped us to continue with our Wednesday night dinners, our SYNAplex Shabbat celebrations, our hands on arts and games program, and our improved technology and overall integrated curriculum. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Holocaust Lumber is a collection of 25 short stories that capture the complexities and humanity of his parents. Told with unflinch-ing honesty, these stories capture a world of lumber and love, a setting of sweetness and survival, a nightmare of guilt, and the light-hearted, absurd moments that are part of all families.
Shabbat Saturday June 20th 10:30 amWe will have author Allan Rosenfeld who will speak about his memoir Holocaust Lumber, about growing up the child of Holocaust survivors here in Ontario.
Wednesday June 10th at 7:00 pmIsraeli Movie Night – Beneath the Helmet Movie length - 89 minutes
Beneath the Helmet: From High School to the Home Front is a coming-of-age story which follows the journey of five Israeli high school graduates who are drafted into the army to de-fend their country. At the age of 18, away from their homes, families and friends these young individuals undergo a demanding, inspiring journey, revealing the core of who they are and who they want to be.
From the creators of the PBS-featured documentary film Israel Inside: How a Small Nation Makes a Big Differ-ence, Beneath the Helmet illustrates how these young men and women are defending not only their homes, but also the values of peace, equality, opportunity, democracy, religious tol-erance and women’s rights. The lessons they learn along the way are lessons that can be appreciated, understood and internalized by the film’s main target audience.

From President Sharon Khavkine-Binstock
During the last weekend of February I joined dozens of other youth groups in Washington D.C. for a social justice seminar created by the Religious Action Centre. Since it was the first time Canadians had ever joined Americans to do this seminar it was very exciting. During the trip I met many Americans and became very close with two roommates from New York. I also met many other Americans who all loved Canadians, one girl even gave me a hug because I was Canadian. During the Seminar we saw some tourist attractions such as the Martin Luther King monument and the air and space museum at the Smithsonian. Also we did small programs called Shuks where you would pick an issue that you want to learn more about. In the Shuks we did simulations and heard a specialist from the Religious Action Centre talk about the issue. There were four “Canadian friendly” programs and many American ones. I chose Climate change, which was a Canadian friendly Shuk and the ethics of embryonic stem cell research, which was an American one. During the climate change program we split off into small groups and talk about different issues surrounding climate change. For me it was interesting to see how climate changed affected Americans and their opinions on it. The second Shuk I did was the ethics of embryonic stem cell research which I really enjoyed. For this program we again split up into groups but we moved around the room where counsellors from the Religious Action Centre would pretend to be a priest, or a Parkinson’s patient as they would give their opinions about embryonic stem cell research. I enjoyed this particular program because we were able to hear the concerns of different people and learn what Jewish law says from a Rabbi. We also did many other simulations to do with poverty, Israel, and the environment as a whole group, but the whole point of these simulations and Shuks were for our final speech. As Canadians we went to the Canadian embassy where we had a tour of the building and spoke in front of representatives of the Canadian embassy, which was very nerve wracking. We did our speeches in groups of four or five and my group spoke about Israel which I think went really well. Overall it was a very busy and jam-packed trip with one activity after another but it was definitely worth it.
