"THE BAND"

FADE IN:

EXT. STADIUM CONCERT - NIGHT

ALEXIA "LEXIA" BLACK(24) performs a stadium show for a crowd of captivated onlookers. She wears a tight, shimmery costume and prances around the stage flipping her hair and holding a glittery microphone.

It's a huge production, complete with costume changes, back-up dancers, and set changes.

EXT. BLOCKED OFF STREET - DAY

Lexia greets fans, shaking and grasping their hands as she moves down the line.

INT. WALGREENS - DAY

High school girls croon over a row of magazines featuring Lexia Black’s photograph.

EXT. NEW YORK STREET - AFTERNOON

Lexia exits her apartment building near Central Park. Passers by immediately begin to accumulate and she waves to them as she slides elegantly into the back of a private car.

EXT. AIRPLANE - EVENING

A large private plane with Lexia's face on it flies into the sunset.

INT. THE CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

The airplane roar transitions into an applauding audience.

Popular talk show host CORRINE MICHAEL(42) stands on stage before an auditorium of excited guests. Applause dies down as she begins to speak.

CORRINEWe have a very special guest with us this evening. This woman is a philanthropist, activist, and one of the biggest and most beloved names in pop music.

(beat)Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Lexia Black!

Page 3: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

The crowd roars and Lexia appears from backstage. She is about 5'4 but her heals and confident stride make her appear taller. She smiles and waves at the adoring audience as she comes forward to join Corrine center stage. Corrine and Lexia embrace before taking their seats in a pair of plush maroon armchairs.

A large clock shows that it is 3pm. They have one hour to film the interview.

A beat.

CORRINE (CONT’D)So, Lexia. Nothing exciting happening in your life, is there?

LEXIA(shrugging)

Oh, you know, nothing much. Just the Grammys.

CORRINERight. You’re just the biggest name in pop music around. But no big deal.

The audience chuckles.

When the laughter dies down Corrine adopts a more serious tone.

CORRINE (CONT’D)(emphatically)

Well, you’ve been nominated for six Grammys and your album is now triple platinum.

(beat)Congratulations!

LEXIAThank you.

CORRINEYou are an inspiration.

(beat)But you’ve said how things weren’t always easy for you.

LEXIAOf course not.

A beat.

2.

Page 4: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

CORRINEAnd it’s been six years since your first album was released?

Lexia nods, it’s almost hard for her to believe it’s already been six years.

LEXIAI guess it has.

CORRINEAnd you started your first album when you were just in high school?

LEXIA(thoughtfully)

Well, I suppose so. At least that’s when I realized music was what I wanted to do.

She leans in towards Corrine.

LEXIA (CONT’D)There was this one student band in my year that was amazing.

(beat)Like a lot better than you’d expect for a high school band.

She leans back, reminiscing.

LEXIA (CONT’D)I just loved them, they were called ‘The Blue Jays.’ I would go to all their gigs.

FADE TO:

INT. TRENDY 18+ CLUB IN MINNEAPOLIS, MN (2010) - NIGHT

A trendy looking club with dim lighting and a smokey haze, giving it a dream-like quality.

The Blue Jays perform on a stage at the back of the club. Spectators are slightly intoxicated but focused on the music and contentedly bob their heads in time to it.

JIM OWL(18) stands center stage. He’s handsome with long and slightly greasy dark hair that frames his face. His eyes are dark blue and he sings with them half-closed during a heartfelt original song.

3.

Page 5: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

He is also a good guitar player, pulling off both rhythm and lead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike.

A group of girls near the stage giggle as they look up at him.

Lexia stands inconspicuously in the corner closest to the stage, her eyes fixated on the band with rapt attention. Her smokey eye-makeup accentuates her longing gaze.

The show comes to an end and the crowd claps and whistles. Jim’s guitar case is filled with tips and he presses his guitar gently atop the pile of cash, grinning. The club manager, ALEC, hurries up to the stage, looking disheveled and grumpy.

ALECOkay guys, I’m gonna need you out of here by 1:15 sharp.

The band nods and starts to gather their equipment in a more focused fashion.

Lexia seizes the opportunity to talk to them and sidles up to the stage. She is not as popular as the members of The Blue Jays, but they recognize her from school.

LEXIAHey, fantastic show.

She hesitates, not sure if anyone heard her. Jim is distracted by the tangle of cables in his hands.

LEXIA (CONT’D)(louder)

Fantastic show!

JIMWhat? Oh, thanks.

He continues wrapping cables and breaking down equipment.

LEXIADo you... need any help packing up?

JIMNo, thanks.

KELLY SANDERSON(17), struggling under the weight of two amplifiers, overhears.

KELLYSure!

4.

Page 6: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

Lexia grins and hops on stage. She takes one of Kelly’s amps and follows her out back to the band’s van.

EXT. BACK PARKING LOT - CONTINUOUS

It’s a cool fall evening and Kelly and Lexia both feel revived by the fresh air after hours in the stuffy club. Lexia follows Kelly’s lead and heaves her guitar amplifier into the back on the van.

KELLY(wiping sweat from her brow)

Thank you. Alec’ll have a fit if we’re not out of here in the next ten minutes.

LEXIANo problem, honored to help.

They start heading back inside.

KELLY(thoughtfully)

Have I seen you before?

Lexia blushes.

LEXIAI go to all your gigs.

INT. CLUB - CONTINUOUS

KELLYSeriously?

LEXIA(bashfully)

I guess I’m a bit of a groupie.

They chuckle as they pass Jim and JOEY FISHMAN(17), the band’s bass player and most laid-back member, who are on their way out with another round of gear.

KELLYSo do you have a crush on Jim or something?

LEXIA(blushes)

No.

KELLYWell, you wouldn’t be the first.

5.

Page 7: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

Together they grab the handles on either side of the large bass amp and hoist it up, making their way laboriously down the stage and towards the back door.

KELLY (CONT’D)But he’s really too serious about music to care much about that.

Lexia nods.

EXT. CLUB - CONTINUOUS

Jim and Joey help lift the massive amp into the trunk.

Jim glances around, making sure they haven’t left any gear behind.

JIMWelp, is that everything?

Jim’s Gibson guitar is still sitting out and Lexia admires it, touching the case longingly.

KELLYDo you play?

Jim takes the guitar from under Lexia’s gaze and sandwiches it gently between the keyboard amp and bass drum.

LEXIAOh, you know. Not really.

(beat)Just every now and then.

Kelly nods encouragingly. Jim opens the door to the van, ready to head out.

JIMAfter party time!

JOEY(under his breath)

More like returning this shit to the school band room...

Lexia smiles softly at them, and Jim gives a curt nod before climbing into the driver's seat. Kelly gets in the passenger side and Joey sits in the back, cramped between the guitar amp at his feet, bass amp to his side, and mic poles poking over the top of his head.

KELLYThanks for the help!

6.

Page 8: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

Joey extracts his hand from the surrounding equipment and waves to Lexia through the window.

JOEYBye!

The car pulls away and Lexia lingers for a moment, watching them drive off and round the corner onto the next street.

A clock chimes in the distance, it’s 1:30am. Lexia turns on her heal and hurries down the street.

INT. THE CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Corrine and the audience have been listening to Lexia’s story with rapt attention.

CORRINE(knowingly)

So, you joined the band and the rest is history.

LEXIAIf only!

(beat)But no, they were way out of my league. I was just honored to help carry out that thousand-ton bass amp.

Lexia rubs her left biceps as if still recalling the weight of the amp.

CORRINEIf only they’d known then what kind of talent you hand.

LEXIA(laughing softly)

You’re too sweet.

FADE TO:

EXT. PRIVATE SCHOOL - LUNCH PERIOD (2010)

A high school campus with Gothic architecture and rolling hills. It’s mid-fall and leaves are swirling on the ground and in the air.

Lexia carries a lunch tray and wanders outside with it. She wears jeans and a knit sweater. She looks good in a natural way – not wanting to appear as if she put too much effort into her appearance.

7.

Page 9: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

She rounds the corner and finds Joey, Jim, and Kelly sitting at a picnic table. Jim has his Gibson and is improvising something amusing.

Lexia looks the opposite direction and pretends to pass by unnoticed.

KELLY(lowering her voice)

It’s that girl from our show.

She calls out.

KELLY (CONT’D)Lexia!

Lexia glances up, pretending to be surprised to see them there. Jim’s smile fades to a frown and he groans.

LEXIAOh, hi!

Lexia hesitates for a moment and then walks over. Joey scooches over a bit to make room.

JOEYDo you...

He glances to Jim for approval.

JOEY (CONT’D)Want to sit with us?

Lexia reflexively looks at Jim, who shrugs in passive agreement. She takes a seat next to Joey, and everyone eats in silence for several moments.

LEXIAWow, I feel like I’m eating with a group of celebrities!

Joey chuckles. Lexia notices Jim’s glare and his Gibson guitar.

LEXIA (CONT’D)(to Jim)

Do you... usually bring your guitar to lunch?

JIMMhm.

Lexia nods, chewing her salad thoughtfully.

8.

Page 10: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

KELLY(to Lexia)

Do you want to play us something?

LEXIA(blushing)

Oh, no, I couldn’t.

They all look at Jim, who continues to look down.

Kelly gets up at grabs Jim’s guitar out of his hands mid-riff.

JIM(semi-annoyed)

Hey!

Kelly hands Lexia the guitar and Lexia sighs, conceding. She begins to play an original pop song.

CUT TO:

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia finishes up an acoustic version of the same song on the show to enthusiastic applause.

BACK TO:

EXT. PRIVATE SCHOOL - LUNCH PERIOD (2010)

KELLY(earnestly)

You’re really good!

JIMInteresting. Is it supposed to be folk?

Lexia blushes.

LEXIAIt’s just something I wrote I guess.

Silence.

LEXIA (CONT’D)(hopefully)

Well, if you ever need a roadie or back up singer....

Jim rolls his eyes.

9.

Page 11: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIM(sarcastic)

We’ll let you know.

Lexia takes the hint and stands up.

Kelly glares at Jim.

KELLY(apologetically)

You have a nice voice but we’re just not taking on new members now with graduation coming up.

Joey prods at his food.

JOEYI just wish we had some new material!

Lexia perks up slightly.

JIM(gruffly)

We have plenty of material. And I’m working on some new stuff now.

He shoots Kelly and Joey a lool.

JIM (CONT’D)You know that.

Lexia picks up her tray.

LEXIAThanks for letting me join you.

Lexia hurries off and as soon as she is out of earshot Kelly says--

KELLYShe good.

JIMSo?

JOEYWe need new material.

JIMShe didn’t suck but she’s still just your average, amateur singer-songwriter type.

10.

Page 12: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

KELLYWe’ve been playing the same songs for the past year! We could try her out on backup.

JIMI just wasn’t that blown away by that song. I really couldn’t see it as a hit.

(beat)And it’ll be complicated to schedule gigs with a 4th person.

After a moment, Joey chimes in with an alternative idea.

JOEY(cockily)

Well, it just so happens that I’ve been trying my hand at songwriting lately. We could use some of my stuff.

KELLYUh....

JIM(quickly)

I mean Lexia’s song wasn’t so bad.

A beat.

JIM (CONT’D)Whatever, I’m heading to class.

Jim straps his guitar over his shoulder and strides off.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia and Corrine are seated in their armchairs once more. The interview continues.

LEXIAI just knew I’d blown it.

Lexia shakes her head at the memory.

LEXIA (CONT’D)And I’d thought it was my big chance to get an in with this band.

(beat)But I wasn’t ready to give up yet so I went home and started from scratch.

11.

Page 13: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

INT. LEXIA’S HOUSE, BEDROOM - NIGHT (2010)

Lexia's room is small and cramped and clearly in a rundown house.

There are very few decorations on the walls and her room is mildly messy. Lexia scribbles lyrics excitedly in a notebook and hashes out chord progressions on her guitar.

LEXIA (V.O.)I bought this cheap microphone from radio shack and made a 12-song demo tape.

(beat)Embarrassingly, I think someone found it and uploaded it to YouTube.

INT. LEXIA’S HOUSE, BEDROOM - LATER

Cover art labeled “Lexia’s Demo Album” slides out of a color printer on Lexia’s desk. She tapes it to a CD case and puts it in her backpack.

INT. PRIVATE SCHOOL - THE NEXT DAY

Lexia daringly approaches Jim by his locker and gives him the demo. She’s dressed up and takes a deep breath.

LEXIAI know you don’t like me, but please just give it a listen.

Jim takes the CD and considers the cover. After a few moments he looks up but Lexia is already walking away.

His expression softens slightly as he watches her go. Her drive reminds him a little of himself.

INT. LEXIA’S HOUSE, BEDROOM - NIGHT

Lexia is in her room, forlorn. It’s been days and she hasn’t heard anything from The Blue Jays.

LEXIA (V.O.)So I didn’t hear anything from them.

(beat)What if they hated it?

LEXIA(in time with her pillow punches)

I’m. So. Fucking. Stupid!

12.

Page 14: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

At that moment Lexia’s dad, TIM BLACK (45), disheveled and prematurely balding, knocks softly on Lexia’s door.

She sits up.

TIMPhone call.

Tim tosses Lexia the receiver and she furrows her brow in a “who is it?” expression.

Tim shrugs.

LEXIAHello?

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. KELLY’S LIVING ROOM - SAME TIME

Kelly’s house looks like it belongs to an upper-middle class owners. Small but classy and homey, and her parents’ prestigious diplomas hang on the walls.

Kelly, Jim, and Joey are all together for the phone call.

Jim quickly passes the phone to Kelly. She shoots him a look, annoyed.

KELLYHey... it’s Kelly from The Blue Jays.

LEXIA(high-pitched)

Oh, Hi Kelly!

KELLYSo this might seem totally random but--

Lexia sits up, excited. She grips the phone tightly to her ear.

KELLY (CONT’D)Well, we liked your playing the other day and your CD... would you want to try singing with us?

Lexia’s jaw drops and she tries to speak but can’t find her words for a moment.

Kelly looks around at Jim and Joey.

13.

Page 15: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

KELLY (CONT’D)(backtracking)

We figured you’d be too busy so it’s not a problem--

Lexia finds her voice.

LEXIA(coolly)

Yeah, I mean, I could do that.

Kelly breathes out, relieved.

KELLYCome to 2320 Pine St. at 6pm this Friday. We rehearse at Joey’s house.

Lexia stays cool until she disconnects the call.

BACK TO:

INT. LEXIA’S HOUSE, BEDROOM

Lexia dances around her room, squealing slightly. Tim opens the door and finds Lexia mid-jump.

He glares at her and Lexia quickly calms down.

LEXIAJust my chem lab partner.

Tim raises an eyebrow.

TIM(gruffly)

Well I need you to take out the trash when you’ve finished studying.

She sinks to her bed, deflated. Homework.

Tim leaves the room.

TIM (O.S.) (CONT’D)And make your own dinner tonight.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Corrine and Lexia are excited by the good news.

CORRINEAt last they came to their senses.

14.

Page 16: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIA(jokingly)

Or they were just really desperate!

The audience laughs.

CORRINE(admiringly)

So humble.

LEXIABut I wasn’t in the clear yet. We still had practice coming up and I knew I’d have to empress them.

EXT. JOEY’S HOUSE - FRIDAY AFTERNOON (2010)

An enormous stone mansion, complete with balcony, fountain, six car garage, and circular driveway. Every shrub is perfectly pruned.

LEXIA (V.O.)Joey’s house was amazing.

Lexia carries an acoustic guitar and rings the doorbell. Joey's dad, DAVE (45), a handsome business man, answers. His shirt is partially unbuttoned.

DAVECan I help you?

Lexia motions to her guitar.

LEXIAI’m just here for band practice.

DAVEAh, they’re all downstairs.

Dave steps aside and Lexia enters.

INT. JOEY’S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

The interior of the house is as splashy as the outside. An expensive fireplace is centered in the living room and surrounded by expensive white-leather furniture and cherry wood floors.

INT. JOEY’S HOUSE, BASEMENT STAIRS - CONTINUOUS

Faint band noises grow louder as Lexia makes her way downstairs.

15.

Page 17: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

INT. JOEY’S HOUSE, OUTSIDE BAND ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Lexia waits for a pause in the music and then knocks on the door.

JOEY (O.S.)Come in!

INT. JOEY’S HOUSE, BAND ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Lexia’s jaw drops at the sight of the space. It’s at least 300 square feet and equipped with incandescent lighting, microphones, amplifiers, and a state-of-the art mixing board for recording.

LEXIA(quietly)

No wonder you guys are good.

She opens her guitar case and straps her guitar over her shoulder.

LEXIA (V.O.)I was so nervous but of course had to pretend like I knew exactly what I was doing.

Lexia fumbles slightly as she tunes her guitar.

Jim takes command of practice.

JIMWe’ll be teaching you a part for one of our songs, and then you can teach us one of yours.

(beat)You know “Sunny Days”?

“Sunny Days” is widely known as their most popular song. Lexia nods eagerly.

JIM (CONT’D)We’ll start with the chorus.

Jim straps on his guitar and begins to strum and sing a harmony part.

JIM (CONT’D)(singing)

Where have those times gone, all those sunny days? Why is it all wrong wishing for that summer haze?

16.

Page 18: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

Loved you for so long but now you've gone away. Now it's been so long me wishing for those summer days.

Lexia copies Jim. It sounds good.

Joey cues up the board semi-inconspicuously as they start to warm up. He begins a recording session to capture their new sound.

They begin to jam and Lexia embellishes the harmony and acoustic guitar parts. They are on a roll.

INT. BAND ROOM - 2 HOURS LATER

Everyone is a little sweaty and worn out but in good spirits.

Kelly and Joey are grinning and give Lexia a high-five when suddenly Jim POWERS DOWN the entire sound system.

JIMKelly, too much hi-hat. It’s sounds corny and amateurish.

Kelly nods. She’s used to Jim’s harsh feedback.

JIM (CONT’D)Joey, you need to get your slides better.

Joey nods, running his fingers along the bass strings to practice.

Lexia gulps. She’s next.

Jim turns to Lexia.

JIM (CONT’D)(displeased)

And I’ll talk to you later.

Lexia winces and turns to pack up her guitar.

INT. JOEY’S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Joey’s dad has his feet up on the coffee table and is watching TV. He glances over his shoulder as Lexia walks passed.

DAVESounding good!

JIM (CONT’D)

17.

Page 19: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIAThanks.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia and Corrine lean back in their chairs.

LEXIANeedless to say, the first few rehearsals were a little tense.

Lexia takes a sip of water.

LEXIA (CONT’D)But we started to find our groove and also become friends.

INT. JOEY’S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

The band is having a slumber party in Joey's living room. Sheet music and lyrics are scattered across the floor.

KELLYWill your dad mind the mess?

JOEYNah, he’s chill. You know his motto, “Music first, mess later.”

A beat.

KELLYYou just made that up, didn’t you?

JOEYYep.

They roll there eyes.

Kelly pulls over her backpack and unzips it. She pulls out a large college admissions envelope.

JOEY (CONT’D)(excitedly)

You got in?

KELLY(grinning)

Yeah.

Joey gives her a proud hug.

18.

Page 20: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JOEYCongrats! My own bandmate – an Ivy League woman.

(a beat)You’d better still talk to me when you’re rich and famous.

Jim and Lexia smile meekly. They’re happy for Kelly but sad at the reminder that their days as a band a nearly over.

KELLYHave you guys heard back from anywhere?

JIM(unenthusiastically)

Got into the U.

JOEYWaiting on Hamilton.

(Beat, proudly)It’s where my parents went.

Lexia doodles in her songwriting notebook.

JOEY (CONT’D)What about you, Lex?

LEXIAHmm? Oh, I don’t know. I guess I’ll apply to a couple places.

They snicker.

LEXIA (CONT’D)(semi-offended)

What?

KELLYI dunno. Just seems like you’re the one person not stressing about this.

She shrugs and leans back.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia leans back in her arm chair, sighing.

LEXIASo just as we were getting good, it was about to all be over.

19.

Page 21: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

CORRINESo that was that?

LEXIAYep. Gave up on music then and there.

They laugh.

CORRINEWell did you ever consider going to college? Or doing something other than becoming a famous pop star?

Lexia chuckles.

LEXIAOkay, okay. I’ll admit I applied to college.

(beat)But I knew I didn’t want to go, and going would mean giving up a career in music.

Corrine nods.

CORRINEDid you tell your parents about this?

INT. LEXIA’S HOUSE, BEDROOM - NIGHT (2010)

Tim knocks softly on the door and enters. Lexia is playing guitar but quickly sets it down as he comes in.

Tim tosses a handful of small envelopes on Lexia's bed. The first round of rejection letters.

TIMI know you think you have it all figured out.

He sits down on the edge of Lexia’s bed.

TIM (CONT’D)(knowingly)

You don’t want to go to college.

Lexia rolls her eyes.

Tim takes on a slightly menacing tone.

20.

Page 22: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

TIM (CONT’D)But do you really think you can make it with that guitar?

LEXIADad, I applied to college.

TIMBecause if you do you’re deluding yourself!

Lexia groans.

LEXIA(exasperated)

Dad, please.

TIMAnd If you think you’ll be anything other than just another cliché you’re wrong.

Tim softens a little, standing up.

TIM (CONT’D)You know, I had the same dream when I was your age.

Tim sighs, staring absentmindedly into the distance.

TIM (CONT’D)I had a band, talent, good looks.

He runs a hand through his graying hair.

TIM (CONT’D)The whole package, really.

LEXIADad, ew. C’mon.

A beat.

TIMIs this the kind of life you want?

He gestures around at the shabby room.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia has a thoughtful expression on her face as she reflects back on her high school days.

21.

Page 23: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIAI was lucky enough to have my parents’ full support, whether I chose music or college.

Lexia reflects for a moment.

LEXIA (CONT’D)So I chose music.

INT. GRADUATION HOUSE PARTY - NIGHT (2011)

A large manor, owned by one of the band’s well-off classmates. Everyone cool from the class of 2011 is there.

The Blue Jays perform and they sound better than before. Lexia stands towards the back of the stage and slightly in the shadows, but she attracts attention.

From time to time she stares at Jim, a certain longing in her gaze. Whether it’s for him or for his position on stage -- or both -- is unclear.

INT. GRADUATION HOUSE PARTY - LATER

The band is still going strong, but it’s passed 2am and time to wrap up the show. Jim does an impressive running leap onto the bass amp, kicking it down as he dives to the floor.

From there, he strums a final chord on his guitar, creating a tremendous feedback loop and rock-ending. The music cuts and the crowd cheers.

Sophomore girls who managed to sneak into the party run up and hug Jim. The crowd slowly disperses and the four Blue Jays gather round together. With a nod Jim leads the way to the back porch for a nostalgic moment with the band.

EXT. GRADUATION HOUSE PARTY, PACK PORCH - CONTINUOUS

It's a quiet and mild spring night and the balcony overlooks a small pond. Jim sighs and leans over the railing, a wistful expression on his face. After a few moments Kelly breaks the silence.

KELLYI’m gonna miss this so much.

Her voice breaks slightly.

KELLY (CONT’D)This band has really helped me through a lot.

22.

Page 24: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIM(sighing)

Guess it’s time to be serious about life now.

JOEYCollege isn’t so bad. It’s like camp for big kids!

They stare out at the lake glumly and then look to Lexia who hasn’t said anything yet. After a moment’s hesitation she takes a deep break and launches into a speech she’s been rehearsing for a while.

LEXIALet’s not go.

KELLY AND JOEYWhat?

LEXIALet's not go! We’ll take one year and just really try to make this happen. This band means everything to me and I know you all feel the same way.

Jim looks tempted but says--

JIMMy parents would never forgive me if I withdrew from Georgia Tech. And I’m already on probation for getting caught smoking.

Jim pulls out a joint.

KELLYHigh school was our chance to make it happen, Lex. And my scholarship wouldn’t be good in another year.

JOEYThis has been fun but honesty, I can’t really see it going anywhere.

His belly rumbles.

JOEY (CONT’D)And Hamilton has an unlimited meal plan.

23.

Page 25: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIAC’mon! We don’t want to be lame get stuck in mundane lives like our parents. We’re artists!

(dramatic pause)And the second we go to college it’s game over.

Lexia looks around fiercely, and, when the band members don't shoot her down, continues.

LEXIA (CONT’D)We’re just getting good.

JIMI’ll think about it, but my answers’ still gonna be no.

Kelly looks at Lexia with a wistful expression.

KELLYYou know I’d like to but my parents would never let me.

JIM(scornfully)

And what exactly would we do? Continue playing local gigs around town?

He shakes his head.

LEXIAOf course not.

She bites her lip.

LEXIA (CONT’D)We’ll go to LA and get a record deal.

JIMRight.

(beat)Did you know that California is the most expensive state to live in? And everybody has that exact same idea?

Jim picks up his guitar case, ready to leave.

24.

Page 26: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIM (CONT’D)(shaking his head)

We’d just end up with a broken dream and pizza delivery van.

A beat.

LEXIAWhat if I can raise the money?

The band pauses, reconsidering.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Corrine leans in towards Lexia. She and the audience are captivated.

LEXIAI tried bake sales, car washes, and even gardening, but the amount of money I made doing those things wouldn’t have lasted two days in LA.

CORRINEWhat did you do?

LEXIAIt came down to just one option.

EXT. JOEY’S HOUSE - EVENING

Lexia stands outside Joey’s house wearing a revealing black dress and heavy eye make-up.

She takes a deep breath and knocks on the door.

Dave answers. He’s wearing shorts, and, as usual, a partially unbuttoned shirt.

DAVEOh, hello.

He discreetly checks her out.

LEXIACan I come in?

DAVEIt would be my pleasure.

Dave steps aside and Lexia enters the house.

25.

Page 27: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

INT. JOEY’S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

The living room looks as lavish as ever.

DAVEJoey’s not home, but perhaps I can assist you?

LEXIAActually, I think you can.

(beat)Can we talk?

Dave and Lexia sit down on the white leather couch by the fireplace. Dave glances at the liquor cabinet.

DAVECan I offer you something to drink?

LEXIAI’m underage, but thank you.

DAVEOf course. I meant non-alcoholic.

LEXIAI’ll have a cranberry juice then, please.

Dave pours Lexia a cranberry juice, adding a splash of Vodka with a wink.

He joins her on the couch.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Well, I suppose I’ll just get right to the point.

(a beat)Mr. Fishman, Joey is a very talented young man and we really want to go with him to LA.

Dave furrows his brow and narrows his eyes in suspicion.

DAVEPlease, call me Dave.

He sips his drink.

DAVE (CONT’D)An intriguing idea.

26.

Page 28: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIAI knew you’d understand.

(beat, enthusiastically)As a successful businessman you must understand taking risks.

DAVEOn the contrary. I only do what’s guaranteed to make me a lot of money.

Lexia grimaces. Oops.

DAVE (CONT’D)

And, as I’m sure you know, Joey’s going to Hamilton this fall.

(beat, proudly)He has a spot on the ultimate frisbee team.

LEXIAThat’s very admirable, but all I’m asking is for him to defer for a year.

Lexia leans in and touches Dave’s hand. He responds positively, but pulls it away slowly.

LEXIA (CONT’D)This is his dream! Surely you understand.

DAVEYou’re a sweet and talented girl, but I understand that this plan is ridiculous.

Dave stands for dramatic emphasis and brandishes his glass as he speaks.

DAVE (CONT’D)Do you have any idea how many people are there doing the exact same thing you are?

LEXIAI do bu--

DAVEPeople who have connections and more training than all of you kids combined?

27.

Page 29: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIAI do understand. More than you know. But all we can ask for is a chance.

Lexia eyes Dave fiercely and flirtatiously.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Isn’t there anything you regret not... doing?

Lexia leans in. Dave furrows his brow and considers her.

DAVENo.

They sit in silence for several moments.

Dave softens.

DAVE (CONT’D)Well, if I hadn’t gone into business, I always thought I might make a good a pastry chef.

CUT TO:

INT. BAKERY - DAY

A fantasy in which Dave wears a white chef’s outfit and cap. He decorates cupcakes with surprising intricacy and artistry.

BACK TO:

INT. JOEY’S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - EVENING

Dave nods, suddenly reconsidering.

DAVEWell, let’s get down to why you’re really here.

(beat)How much will it cost?

LEXIANot much.

A beat.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Well, 60K but we’ll pay it all back.

28.

Page 30: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

After a moment Dave sighs.

DAVEI suppose I wouldn’t be a good businessman if I didn’t invest in talent when I saw it.

Dave rummages for his checkbook in his desk drawer and returns to the couch.

DAVE (CONT’D)But I want regular updates about your progress.

He makes out the check.

LEXIAOf course!

He tears out the check.

DAVEAnd I travel to LA sometimes so be ready for a surprise inspection.

LEXIAThank you! You won’t regret this.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia leans back in her chair. The diamond necklace she wears today is probably worth more than 60K.

LEXIAWe were so lucky that Joey’s dad believed in us as a band.

CUT TO:

EXT. JOEY’S HOUSE - EVENING (2011)

Lexia prepares to leave. Dave pats her on the shoulder for a little longer than is appropriate.

BACK TO:

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

LEXIAI don’t think we could have done it without him.

CORRINEWow.

29.

Page 31: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIAAnd, for the record, I did pay him back.

CORRINEYou mean you made enough money in the music business after all?

The audience chuckles.

CORRINE (CONT’D)When did you hit the road?

INT. LEXIA’S HOUSE, BEDROOM - DAY (AUGUST, 2011)

Lexia is packed and ready to leave.

She looks at herself in the mirror for a moment before grabbing her guitar and suitcase.

INT. LEXIA’S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Lexia stands in the living room, guitar and suitcase in hand.

Tim sits on the couch watching TV. Lexia hesitates for a moment, looking at him, but he doesn’t look up.

LEXIAI’m leaving.

Tim sighs and glances over his shoulder at her.

TIMHere.

He chucks a small, green guitar pick with the signature “Tim Black” at her feet. It’s from his days as a failed musician.

TIM (CONT’D)I wouldn’t bother printing your own.

EXT. JOEY’S HOUSE - LATER

Lexia, Jim, Joey, and Kelly load up the van. It’s the same van as before, but some of their equipment is new.

Joey comes out of the house carrying a large basket filled with Doritos, Cheetos, and other snacks for the ride.

JOEY(enthusiastically)

Who’s hungry?

30.

Page 32: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

No one responds.

The van is artfully packed, everything fitting inside like puzzle pieces. When the last amp has been carefully situated in the trunk, everyone climbs in.

INT. VAN - CONTINUOUS

They are all crammed in, but excited to be on their way at last.

Jim starts the ignition and Dave waves from the front stoop as they pull away. Lexia catches his eye in passenger side mirror.

INT. VAN - A FEW MINUTES LATER

They merge onto the highway.

JIM(excitedly)

I can’t believe we’re really doing this!

Kelly laughs cheerily.

KELLYScrew my parents!

Jim glances over at Lexia and pats her on the shoulder.

JIM Thank you.

They both blush.

MONTAGE - THE BAND ROAD TRIPS TO LOS ANGELES

A.) INT. CAR - EVENING. The band drives along the highway, singing along to the radio.

B.) INT. CAR - DAY. The band drives through a small town.

C.) INT. CAR - EVENING. They pull into a motel.

D.) EXT. GRAND CANYON - DAY. They take photos by the grand canyon.

E.) EXT. DENVER, COLORADO - EVENING. - They play an impromptu street performance in downtown Denver.

F.) EXT. REST STOP. Joey purchases snacks from a vending machine and the band stretches their legs by a nearby pond.

31.

Page 33: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

G.) INT. CAR - NIGHT. Joey and Kelly sleep in the back of the car and Jim scribbles song lyrics for a song called “Long Drive” in his notebook, quietly humming a melody. Lexia is taking a turn at the wheel and glances over at him. They catch each other’s eyes and quickly look away, blushing.

H.) INT. CASINO - LAS VEGAS. They play a few rounds of black jack.

I.) INT. CAR - HIGHWAY. They pass a road sign that says "Los Angeles 270 Miles".

INT. CAR - NIGHT

The excitement about the road trip has worn off. The car feels more cramped now and is littered with pop bottles and empty chip bags, most of which surround Joey.

JOEY(mopily)

My butt’s starting to hurt.

KELLYWe’re almost there.

(to Jim)Right?

Jim is stiff from sitting for so long.

JIMLike 4 hours.

The band drives through the night.

EXT. SKETCHY STREET - LATER

At around 3am, Lexia awakens to the sound of crunching gravel.

The van pulls to a stop outside a sketchy apartment building.

LEXIA(groggily)

Where are we?

Jim looks at the GPS, brow furrowed.

JIMThis can’t be right.

He shakes the GPS, frustrated.

32.

Page 34: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

They're in a sketchy neighborhood far away from the city. But the dank, rundown apartment building has the correct address.

Joey groans and everyone gets out of the car.

EXT. APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS

Lexia fumbles with her keys and, to everyone's disappointment, the key labeled “apartment” fits the lock.

INT. APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS

The door creaks open and they all gasp. Old food stains are splattered across the stove and chunks of ceiling plaster are missing or pealing away.

They find the two bedrooms and each is furnished with a set of bunk beds and a heap rubble on the floor.

Joey's jaw drops.

JOEY(in disbelief)

Where are the others?

KELLY(to Lexia)

You said this was a 4-bedroom.

Joey opens one of the closet doors hopefully. Instead of another bedroom, a strong smell of mothballs is revealed.

Joey pinches his nose.

LEXIAThe ad said four bed.

Lexia sizes up the bunk beds.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Technically, there are four beds.

They’re not amused.

Joey sits on the lower bunk, bouncing slightly.

JOEYWho wants to be my roomie?

They all groan. No one wants to share with Joey, the messiest of the four. Before Joey can proposition Jim--

33.

Page 35: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIM(quickly)

We’ll draw names out of a hat.

Everyone writes their name on a slip of paper and puts in it Jim's beanie hat. Joey reaches in and pulls out a slip. He does a drum roll.

JOEYAnd the luck winner is...

(beat)Kelly!

Kelly groans but Joey gives her a high five.

EXT. APARTMENT - 15 MINUTES LATER

The band brings in their last round of gear, setting it in the living room.

JIMI’m tired.

Lexia follows him into their bedroom, and Joey and Kelly go into the other.

INT. LEXIA AND JIM’S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

Jim and Lexia both run towards the latter. They struggle for a moment to be the first to claim the top bunk before conceding.

Lexia fumbles for a coin in her pocket.

LEXIAHeads or tails?

JIMHeads.

It’s tails.

They climb into bed, exhausted. Lexia lies in the top bunk, looking at the ceiling for a few minutes.

LEXIAAre you scared?

Jim had been starting to nod off.

JIMHuh?

34.

Page 36: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIANever mind.

She rolls over and falls asleep.

INT. APARTMENT, LEXIA AND JIM’S BEDROOM - THE NEXT MORNING

Lexia awakens to the sound of Jim and Kelly jamming in the living room. She gets up, annoyed, and walks down the hall.

KELLY(cheerily)

Good morning!

Lexia grunts in reply, fishing her toiletries out of a suitcase.

INT. BATHROOM - CONTINUOUS

Lexia is dressed and finishes brushing her teeth, ready to start the day.

INT. LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Lexia plays a song she wrote in the car called “Long Ride”.

LEXIA(singing)

It’s been a long ride It’s been a long ride, sitting in the back seat all this time.

Jim cuts her off.

JIMWhy don’t we try this instead?

He clears his throat.

JIM (CONT’D)(singing)

Been a long ride and it's been a long time - coming down here again and with you on my mind.

Been a long day and an even longer night but those days with you they were never right.

The band begins to play along to Jim’s rendition as they catch on to the melody and tempo. It sounds good.

Lexia interjects.

35.

Page 37: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIAIt sounds cliché now.

JIMI was only trying to help.

He flips through his notebook. Another idea he came up with in the car.

JIM (CONT’D)Let’s try something else. Here’s one I wrote in the car. It’s called “Firelight.”

JIM (CONT’D)(singing)

She's beautiful she's pretty she's the kind of girl I want.

He glances at Lexia.

JIM (CONT’D)(singing)

I've known her all my life and I like her a lot.

She's charming and she's funny and she makes me feel so good.

I want her to be my girl but I know she never would (never would).

Marry Me.

Meet me tonight.

Come with me girl and sit

Down by that firelight

Lexia scoffs.

LEXIAThere’s no way we’re playing that.

JIM AND JOEYWhy not?

LEXIA

Because we're tired of your angsty 9th grade songs.

36.

Page 38: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

She looks to Joey and Kelly for support but they don’t say anything.

JIM(angrily)

Well do you have anything better?

Before Lexia can respond--

JOEYI thought Firelight was pretty good, actually.

LEXIAMaybe if you’re a folk band!

(beat)I noticed a church down the street. Maybe the Christian folk group would have you.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Corrine and Lexia continue talking.

CORRINEI see your single Firelight has been a number one hit for six weeks now. Incredible!

LEXIAThank you.

CORRINEIt’s so catchy.

She clears her throat and starts to sing.

CORRINE (CONT’D)(singing in an exaggerated voice)

Meet me tonight. By the Firelight.

It sounds almost exactly the same as Jim’s original version of the song.

Lexia joins in with backup vocals.

LEXIA(singing)

Firelight! Firelight!

They stop the audience giggles along with them.

A beat.

37.

Page 39: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

CORRINEAnd how did you approach song writing? Were you with the band when you wrote Firelight?

LEXIAWe tried to write together sometimes, but I came up with a fair amount of the ideas.

CORRINEDon’t be modest.

LEXIA(nostalgically)

Well, I’d usually think of something and then we’d all give it a try and workshop together.

FLASHBACK:

INT. APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

A falsely cheery recollection of the same band practice. Everyone’s gathered around a hearty fire and the apartment is much cleaner and cozier than in reality.

Instead of Jim, Lexia is proposing Firelight.

LEXIA(singing)

Meet me tonight.

By the Firelight.

BACK TO:

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia sighs nostalgically at the apparently fond memory.

LEXIAWe were so lucky to be such a tight-knit team.

(beat)Anyway, the song writing was going well, but we weren’t going to get anywhere without a demo album. So that’s when we found a producer named Billy Brad.

INT. BEANIE’S CAFÉ - LATER

A friendly coffee shop in an upscale LA neighborhood.

38.

Page 40: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

The band has arrived for a meeting with a record producer Lexia found online.

They find a table in the middle of the dining area.

KELLY(whispering)

Do you think he’s here?

They scan the crowd but don't see anyone. After a few moments the door to the café bursts open and BILLY BRAD comes in, wearing a navy suit and carrying a large briefcase. He is well dressed, but his hair is slightly disheveled and he looks tired.

Kelly nudges Lexia.

KELLY (CONT’D)(whispering, worried)

Is that him?

Lexia frowns slightly when she sees the man Kelly is pointing to. He is plumper and older than he looked in his online profile.

Lexia gestures to him and he seats himself at their table, removing his slightly worn coat.

LEXIAMr. Brad?

Billy is already busy pouring himself a glass of orange juice from the pitcher they ordered.

BILLYPlease, call me Billy!

Billy smiles, revealing a chipped tooth. His hand is slightly sweaty as he shakes everyone's hands.

BILLY (CONT’D)Well, what can I do for you?

He folds his arms and sits up straighter.

Lexia glances at Jim.

LEXIAAs I mentioned, we’re a local band hoping to make a demo album.

BILLYOf course, of course.

39.

Page 41: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

He takes a sip of juice.

BILLY (CONT’D)Well you’ve come to the right guy. The people I’ve worked with go on to Universal, RCA, Big Machine....

The band looks hopeful.

KELLYWhich artists have you worked with?

BILLYOh, well, you know--

Billy “accidentally” knocks over his orange juice onto his lap.

BILLY (CONT’D)Agh, dammit.

Joey grabs some napkins and hands them to Billy, who pats his lap with them.

A beat.

BILLY (CONT’D)Now, where were we?

JIMCan you tell us more about your experience?

BILLY (coughing)

Sorry?

JIMWell, what have you produced?

Lexia shoots him a look.

Billy clears his throat.

BILLY You know Jordan Mercer?

They shake their heads.

BILLY (CONT’D)Well, how bout Avicii, Jared Leto?

Jim furrows his brow.

40.

Page 42: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIM(skeptically)

Didn’t... Universal produce them?

Billy gives a dry laugh.

BILLYHa. Those assholes.

He shakes his head and points to himself.

BILLY (CONT’D)It was all me.

Kelly’s jaw drops.

KELLYWow!

BILLY(bitterly)

I know. Made their entire albums and they switched over to Universal at the last minute for marketing reasons.

Billy makes a sour expression and they sit in silence for several moments.

BILLY (CONT’D)Look, y’all are good kids but I have a very busy schedule. I have another appointment coming up.

He glances at his watch.

A beat.

BILLY (CONT’D)I thought your demo was okay, but I really don’t have the time to work with people who aren’t going to give this 100%.

Billy starts to stand up.

Jim stops him.

JIMWait, I didn’t mean to doubt you.

(beat)We’d be honored to work with you.

41.

Page 43: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

BILLY(sighing)

Well I don’t know....

JIMI promise we’d take this very seriously.

Billy frowns for a few moments, and the band waits with bated breath. After a moment Lexia reaches into her bag for her ipod and headphones.

LEXIAWill you just give our music another listen?

Billy accepts the headphones and puts them over his ears. He bobs his head as he listens to their demo of "Sunny Days." After a few moments he takes off the headphones and pauses before saying--

BILLYWell, okay. You seem like good kids and I think together we could make something great.

He smiles.

The band collectively exhales and grins, and Billy pulls out a manila envelope from his briefcase.

He spreads some forms across the table.

BILLY (CONT’D)Most of this is just legal jargon.

The band nods, scanning the forms. He flips to the last page.

BILLY(CONT’D)You’ll just have to sign here. And I’ll need the check for 10K by Monday so we can get started.

They each sign the paperwork in turn. Billy packs up his things and he shakes everyone’s hands once more.

BILLY (CONT’D)An honor to meet you all.

LEXIAWait, when can we do the recording?

BILLYGive me two weeks.

42.

Page 44: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

Billy hurries away quickly, leaving the band seated at the café table. They look contented as they sit back in the warm atmosphere, enjoying their drinks.

INT. APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM - LATER

Dissent has begun to arise amongst the band and they argue over who should sing the lead vocals on their new song, “We’re Artists.”

JIMI wrote it.

LEXIAWe wrote it together.

JIMWell you’re the backup singer!

LEXIANot anymore! And it’s a better fit for my vocal range.

JIMWell this is my band.

Kelly interjects.

KELLY(angrily)

Your band?! We’re all in this together, Jim.

There’s a brief, uncomfortable pause.

JIMI’m sorry.

(beat)But every band needs a leader and I’ve been keeping this band together for the past four years.

(beat)And besides, we have a gig tomorrow. There’s no time to rearrange the parts.

Kelly and Joey nod, agreeing with Jim.

LEXIAI already know the parts!

INT. APARTMENT, LEXIA AND JIM’S BEDROOM - THE FOLLOWING DAY

Jim and Lexia are changing, getting ready for the gig.

43.

Page 45: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

Lexia slips into a tight, sequined dress. As Jim buttons his shirt, Lexia reaches into her purse and pulls out a brown bag from a pastry shop.

LEXIADo you want a cookie?

Lexia holds up the bag containing a suspicious-looking hand-made chocolate chip cookie.

Jim grabs it and takes a bite.

JIMThanks!

EXT. BAR MUSIC VENUE - LATER

A small bar in Los Angeles. Not a very desirable venue for a gig.

Jim smokes a joint.

JIM(happy but very intoxicated)

Whoo-ee! I feel so high!

He shakes his bag of weed.

JIM (CONT’D)This is some gooood shit.

Lexia and Kelly glance at each other, worried.

LEXIAAre you sure you feel up to performing?

Jim rolls his head in circles, delirious.

JIMI feel great!

A teenage girl walks passed. Jim unsuccessfully tries to hit on her.

He stumbles forward, a crazed look in his eyes.

JIM (CONT’D)Hello there!

The girl glares at him and continues on.

44.

Page 46: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

INT. BAR MUSIC VENUE - LATER

The band is crammed onto a tiny floor-stage.

Patrons give the band dirty looks and slowly begin vacate the venue.

INT. BAR MUSIC VENUE - LATER

The bar is nearly empty now.

The band takes a break after their second set and Jim falls asleep, head resting on his guitar case.

INT. APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM - LATER

Jim has his head in his hands, embarrassed.

KELLYYou have got to start taking this more seriously, Jim.

JIMI’m sorry. I don’t know what happened. I won’t smoke before a show again.

LEXIAYou’re not a rock star yet.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia stays upbeat and she recounts a sunnier version of the tale.

LEXIASome of our early gigs weren’t so glamorous, but we were all trying our best.

A beat.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Despite the tiny apartment we all really respected each other and made an effort to work together.

INT. APARTMENT, KITCHEN - NIGHT

Lexia sneaks into the kitchen in the middle of the night.

She finds a box of cereal labeled “Jim’s Cereal: DO NOT EAT OR ELSE!!!”

45.

Page 47: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

She sprinkles its contents across the living room floor and on top of Kelly’s drum kit. For good measure, she also leaves an upside down bowl on the rug, complete with spoon and pool of milk beside it.

INT. APARTMENT, LEXIA AND JIM’S ROOM - THE NEXT MORNING

Lexia awakens to Kelly’s yell.

KELLY (O.S.)Agh!

INT. LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Lexia comes into the living room to find an angry Kelly, confused Jim, and startled rat atop the snare drum. The rat scurries away, cereal chunk in its mouth.

KELLYJim this is disgusting!

Kelly gestures towards the strewn cereal. The pool of milk is already starting to smell and she wrinkles her nose.

KELLY (CONT’D)There are four of us living in this shit-hole apartment and you can’t even keep your cereal in a bowl.

JIMI didn’t have any cereal!

Joey comes in, looking grumpy.

JOEYI heard you walking around again last night, man.

JIM(confused)

What?

Lexia chimes in.

LEXIAAnd you were smoking again.

She gestures towards the guilty remains of a joint which lies on the coffee table.

Jim furrows his brow. Could he have been smoking so much that he didn’t remember?

46.

Page 48: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

Kelly and Lexia glance at each other.

KELLYJim, if you can’t take this seriously this won’t work for anyone.

Jim looks hurt.

KELLY (CONT’D)You need to clean up.

JIMJust give me another chance.

EXT. 500+ PURPLE LAMP MUSIC VENUE, LOS ANGELES - NIGHT

The band prepares to unload their things outside of The Purple Lamp, a sketchy but popular music venue in downtown. Posters advertising their gig are up, all of which say, "Lexia Black and The Blue Jays."

JOEY(re: Posters, to Lexia)

Why do all the posters have just you on them?

LEXIAAgh, must be a mistake. I told them to change that.

She shakes her head.

Kelly and Jim grumble but know it's too late to change anything.

Inside, Jim's center-stage microphone is labeled "Lexia," and the flyer reads, Lexia Black - Vocals, and Jim Owl - Back up vocals.

JIMDamn, they got this wrong too.

He makes to rearrange the mic set-up.

LEXIAC’mon Jim, it’s no big deal. Lets just leave it so we don’t confuse the sound person.

JIMNo way! It’ll mess up our entire show.

47.

Page 49: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

But before Jim can move the mics, the MC comes on stage to introduce them.

MCLadies and gentlemen, please welcome one of the hottest new band's in LA.

(beat)The Blue Jays!

The audience cheers and Jim wipes the scowl off his face as he takes his place in the corner and the show begins. The audience nods along energetically to the music. Lexia gives an animated performance and the crowd loves it.

Jim tries to regain his position in the center of the stage, but the mic cable won’t stretch far enough and he is barricaded in by his own guitar amp.

As the third song begins, Jim angrily unplugs Lexia's mic cable.

The audience begins to boo and she realizes that her mic is no longer working. She looks back at the other band members desperately. After a moment she catches Jim's guilty expression and follows his gaze to the loose XLR cable.

Lexia strides over to Jim and attempts to take over his mic. He shoves her, and she shoves back, causing him to trip over the loose cable and fall on stage.

The audience boos loudly. A DRUNK ONLOOKER cackles and tosses his beer on Jim's head.

DRUNK ONLOOKER These guys suck!

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Corrine and Lexia both have a look of exasperation on their faces as Lexia recounts the tragic tale.

LEXIAWe loved Jim, but his substance abuse was starting to intervene with our shows.

Lexia takes a drink of water, shaking her head pityingly.

LEXIA (CONT’D)We all felt bad about the situation, but we had to do what was best for Jim’s health.

48.

Page 50: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

CORRINEHad drugs been a problem for him before?

LEXIAOh, yes. It was really only a matter of time before he’d have gotten into more serious trouble with it.

They both sigh.

CORRINEYou are such a dedicated friend too.

INT. APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM - LATER

The band is gathered in the living room and everyone is furious with each other.

JOEYMy dad’s pissed and this sucks. If things continue this way I’m going home.

KELLYJoey, come on. We’ll work it out.

Everyone fumes for a few moments. Jim rolls a joint.

KELLY (CONT’D)Jim, please.

She glances at Lexia.

LEXIA(turning to Jim)

Kelly and I have been talking and--

She looks to Kelly, who continues the bad news.

KELLYYou know as much as we do that this just isn’t working.

JIMWhat?

49.

Page 51: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

KELLY(sensitively)

We love you, you just haven’t been reliable enough to be the lead singer.

She looks down.

JIMBut this is my band!

KELLY(outraged)

Our band.

Jim puts his head in his hands.

KELLY (CONT’D)All we’re asking is for you to stand down until you can clean up.

Jim looks around helplessly, waiting for someone to come to his defense.

But Joey is too busy rummaging in the freezer for ice cream, and Lexia and Kelly remain resolute.

A beat.

Jim gives in, nodding.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia and Corrine sit, looking somber.

After a moment Lexia’s expression lightens.

LEXIAAnd suddenly I was the lead singer of The Blue Jays.

INT. JIM AND LEXIA’S ROOM- NIGHT

Jim takes out his frustration by song writing.

He scribbles in a notebook:

Gotta step down

If I wanna clean up

Gotta step down

If I wanna clean up

50.

INT. APARTMENT, LEXIA AND JIM’S BEDROOM - LATER

Lexia and Jim are both awake, laying in silence.

LEXIAI don’t want to fight anymore.

Jim doesn’t say anything.

LEXIA (CONT’D)You awake?

JIMYeah.

LEXIAC’mon. If we want to make it as a band we need to find a way to compromise.

Jim sighs.

JIMI never thought it would be me.

LEXIAWhat?

JIMLosing control of myself. This band means everything to me and I let you all down.

A beat. Lexia looks guilty.

LEXIAThere’s things I need to work on too. I know I should stop trying to take charge of everything.

Jim half-smiles.

JIMMaybe we’re just too similar for our own good.

A beat.

JIM (CONT’D)Come down here, I have a new idea for a song I can show you.

51.

Page 53: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

Lexia climbs down the latter and joins Jim on the lower bunk. They’re both in pajamas. He begins to play “Clean Up,” and they sit close to each other on the bed.

Lexia has a soft expression of admiration on her face as he plays. He has a talent for songwriting.

INT. APARTMENT, LEXIA AND JIM’S BEDROOM - THE NEXT MORNING

Lexia and Jim have fallen asleep side by side on Jim’s bunk, the guitar at their feet.

Jim wakes up and shakes Lexia’s shoulder.

JIMGotta get up! It’s our big day.

EXT. SHABBY BUILDING - LATER

Jim pulls into the parking area behind a shabby building in Thai Town, Los Angeles.

EXT. SHABBY BUILDING, FOYER - MOMENTS LATER

Kelly peers in through the dirty window but doesn't see anyone. Billy answers. He's wearing a pair of very worn-out jeans and a stretched out shirt. Lexia and Kelly look at each other, taken aback.

BILLY Hey guys, come on in. We’ll be recording in the basement if you want to go ahead and get set up.

INT. SHABBY BUILDING, BASEMENT STAIRS - CONTINUOUS

The band follows him down a set of narrow stairs into a grungy basement. The ceilings are low, and they hear a banging sound and a dripping pipe in the distance.

JIM(whispering in Lexia’s ear)

Are you sure about this?

JOEYWhere’s the studio?

Together they notice a small, dated sound board, computer, and moth-eaten chair huddled in the corner of the room.

KELLY(sighing)

Can I get a hand with the drums?

52.

Page 54: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

INT. STUDIO - 20 MINUTES LATER

The band is warming up, and Billy lumbers down, beer in hand and shirt riding up slightly over his potbelly.

SERIES OF SHOTS - BILLY CLUMSILY SETS UP THE SESSION

-- Opens an audacity recording session

-- Screws a mic holder onto a rusty and shaky stand.

MOMENTS LATER

BILLYY’all ready?

Kelly’s look of confusion turns to anger.

KELLY(upset)

Um, don't we need a few more mics for the kit? Like for the bass and high hats at least?

BILLYNo, no. That just makes it more complicated and the sounds get all jumbled anyway. This is that natural sound that you want.

(beat)What I did for Rihanna's demo.

Jim is about to interject, but Billy cues up the transformer before he has the chance.

BILLY (CONT’D)Well, what are we starting with?

LEXIASunny Days.

Billy clicks the record button.

BILLYRolling!

KELLYAren’t we going to use a click?

BILLYNah. Metronomes were all the rage in the 90s, but it’ll be more natural this way.

53.

Page 55: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

(beat)Whenever you’re ready.

Kelly claps her drum sticks together, setting the tempo.

KELLYOne, two, three, four!

The band begins to play. The acoustics are mediocre, but they give an energetic performance.

INT. LIQUOR CABINET - CONTINUOUS

As they play, Billy grabs himself another beer, belching as he chooses a can.

INT. STUDIO - CONTINUOUS

Billy returns just in time to end the session as the song wraps up.

BILLYWhat’s next?

LEXIAAren’t you going to get multiple takes?

KELLYDon’t you need to adjust the levels or anything? Or isolate the tracks?

Billy laughs dryly.

BILLY A common misconception in the industry. People think the sounds will somehow blend together better if they're isolated, but this way will sound more natural.

He guffaws.

BILLY (CONT’D)What’s next?

LEXIA(disheartened)

Let’s give “Firelight” a try.

SERIES OF SHOTS - THE BAND PLAYS THEIR SET

-- Song 2 - the band plays "Firelight" but have lost some of their initial energy.

BILLY (CONT'D)

54.

Page 56: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

-- Song 3 - Joey glares at Billy's back as he plays bass with unnecessary force.

-- Mr. Brad loosens his belt buckle, enjoying a third beer.

-- Song 4 - Jim is sits on his amp, deflated, while he plays guitar.

MOMENTS LATER

Jim stands up.

JIM(disheartened)

Can we redo that one?

BILLY The first take is always the best one.

(beat)You don’t want some tired out old track, now do you?

At last, the briefer-than-expected session ends and the band packs up their things and climbs into the van.

INT. VAN - LATER

They drive in silence for a few moments, everyone reflecting silently on the disastrous session.

Joey breaks the silence.

JOEY(to Lexia)

So... how did you say you found this guy?

LEXIAOnline. We all thought his music sounded good.

Kelly tries to stay positive.

KELLYMaybe it’ll sound better when it’s all done.

Jim looks up Billy Brad's page online and pulls up one of his slick-sounding demos. He pulls a metronome out of his guitar case and adjusts it as the song plays. At 124 bpm, they are exactly in sync.

55.

Page 57: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

LEXIANeedless to say, we were pretty worried about the demo.

Corrine gasps, shocked.

CORRINEDid he ever do it?

LEXIAWell, a CD did arrive a week later....

Her voice trails off.

EXT. APARTMENT - DAY

A delivery person drops off a padded envelope. Lexia hops up from the couch and grabs it, bringing it back into the living room to open with everyone.

Five discs labeled "The Blue Jays," are inside, and Lexia pops one into the CD player.

They wait with bated breath for the first track to begin.

It's awful. The arrangement is muddy and a corny echo has been added to the vocals.

JIMTurn it off!

Lexia turns it off, grimacing. There’s silence for a few moments.

JIM (CONT’D)(disbelievingly)

What the...

Lexia groans as they round on her.

LEXIA(defensively)

We all thought he seemed legit on his website!

KELLYLet’s call him. Demand our money back!

Lexia puts her head in her hands.

56.

Page 58: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIAThe contract says we can’t.

JIMThat was Joey’s dad’s hard earned money!

JOEY(nonchalant)

Ehh, he has more. (beat)

But there’s no way he’ll give us another 10K.

Joey shakes his head.

KELLY(mournfully)

I could be in school right now.

She slams her copy of the demo to the floor and kicks it.

JIM(to Lexia)

You told us you had it together!

LEXIAI’m sorry! We’re all in this together!

No one says a word.

JIMLex, I want this to work but if we continue at this rate I’m going home.

LEXIAOkay, okay. I’ll fix it!

Before anyone else can yell at her, Lexia grabs the keys to the van and hurries outside.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia gives Corrine a woeful look.

CORRINE Did you ever see Billy again?

LEXIAActually, I did.

57.

Page 59: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

EXT. ALLEYWAY - DAY (TWO YEARS EARLIER)

Lexia and Jim spy Billy dumpster diving in a wealthy neighborhood alleyway. He looks even more disheveled now and has a second missing tooth.

BACK TO:

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

LEXIABut only at a distance.

CORRINEWell, he certainly didn’t hold you back in the long run.

EXT. UCLA CAMPUS - DAY

It's a sunny day and students lounge on the quad. Lexia has a determined look on her face as she marches across campus.

INT. UCLA, MUSIC SCHOOL HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER

Lexia goes through a set of double doors into the music school. She looks fascinated by it as she is passed by hurried students carrying instruments.

She wanders down the hallway until she runs into a STUDENT. The student looks busy and frazzled but Lexia intercepts him.

LEXIAExcuse me I’m in the--

Her eyes fall upon a poster in the background that reads, "Declare a Performance Concentration Now!"

LEXIA (CONT’D)Performance concentration program and I'm looking to collaborate with a Music Industry and Technology student on a demo.

STUDENTYou mean MIT?

Lexia adopts a swagger, hoping to come across as a seasoned UCLA student.

LEXIAYeah, MIT. Y’know.

The student raises his eyebrows skeptically.

58.

Page 60: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

STUDENTOkay, good lu--

LEXIA(shrewdly)

What did you say the list serve e-mail is for the department?

STUDENTOh, I didn’t.

LEXIAOh, right. What is it then?

STUDENTI’m not really supposed to give it out...

LEXIAOh, but Professor--

Lexia scans another poster which has a photo of PROFESSOR JANS LINDEMANN.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Lindemann told me to ask you. He said you'd know everything I needed to know.

(beat, flatteringly)And he said you're one the best students here.

STUDENT (blushing)

He did? Wow. Well, I guess if he told you to ask me...

The student pulls out his bag and retrieves a notebook.  He scribbles down an e-mail address and hands it to Lexia.

STUDENT (CONT’D)Try this.

LEXIAThanks.

STUDENTGood luck.

Lexia nods and hurries away, looking down at the slip of paper.

59.

Page 61: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

EXT. APARTMENT - LATER

Lexia hurries inside. Jim, Joey, and Kelly are seated in the living room and looking grumpy. Joey plays a video game. Lexia rushes into her and Jim's bedroom and shuts the door.

INT. APARTMENT, LEXIA AND JIM’S BEDROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Lexia opens her computer and quickly composes an email to the MIT department at UCLA:

COMPUTER SCREEN:

Hey All,

My band and I are in the performance concentration program and we're looking to make a demo album with someone from MIT. Let me know if you'd be interested.

Sincerely,

BACK TO SCENE:

Lexia presses send and leans back in her chair.

She pulls out a notebook and begins to work on lyrics.

MOMENTS LATER

Her computer PINGS.

There's a message from ALAN Z.

Please let me know if you’d like to meet up and discuss this further--

INT. APARTMENT, LEXIA AND JIM’S BEDROOM - LATER

The sun is now low in the sky and Lexia has printed and taped up 25 Music Industry Technology major responses to the wall. There's a diverse group of candidates and she's created bullet points below everyone, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.

Lexia hears a knock on the door.

KELLY (O.S.)Lex, what the hell are you up to? Are we rehearsing tonight or what?

LEXIAJust a minute. I have a new plan for tonight.

MOMENTS LATER

Lexia opens the door and calls out to Joey.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Order a pizza!

JOEY (O.S.)What size?

LEXIALarge!

JOEY (O.S.)Can I get party-size?

INT. APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM - LATER

A pizza delivery person arrives carrying a party-sized pizza. Joey pays her and they head to Lexia and Jim's room.

INT. APARTMENT, JIM AND LEXIA’S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

They sit on Jim’s bed and look up at the bios on the wall with mild interest.

LEXIA(excitedly)

Meet the UCLA sound engineering majors.

The band looks at the postings skeptically.

LEXIA (CONT’D)I’ve narrowed it down to these six.

She gestures towards six faces: JAMIE SAMUELS, EDGARDO CASSIDY, GEORGIA GEORGESON, NICOLE BURTON, SOPHIA JANS and JON HALEY.

KELLYSix what?

LEXIA(proudly)

Six Music Industry Technology sound engineers.

JIM(Skeptically)

Don’t they look a little young? Where did you find these people?

LEXIAThese fine candidates come from the prestigious Music Industry Technology program at the University of California Los Angeles.

They furrow their brows.

KELLYOkay, well where are they now?

JIMWhich labels do they work for?

LEXIA...They’re still students.

Jim lets out a dry laugh.

62.

Page 64: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIMStudents? Please Lexia, I think you’ve wasted our time enough already.

Jim motions to stand up.

LEXIAHere me out. These people are all really good and they'll do this for free.

(beat)And they want this to be just as good as we do for their portfolios.

Kelly softens slightly.

KELLYOk, tell us more about the candidates.

SERIES OF SHOTS - CANDIDATES THAT ARE THE WRONG FIT

-- Jamie Samuels strolls across UCLA campus. He wears sunglasses and looks suave. A sample of his music plays.

LEXIA (V.O.)Jamie Samuels. Into hip hop, rap, and pop. Interned at Universal Records.

KELLY (O.S.)Eh, not really our kind of music.

-- Edgardo Cassidy is at work in a UCLA studio, making some funky beats.

LEXIA (V.O.)A junior in the music program. "Committed to making our music sound Amazing"

Kelly and Joey chuckle.

--Georgia Georgeson is at work in her dorm room. Her demo is of her singing with an electro-pop sound.

LEXIA (V.O.)Georgia Georgeson is a senior in the MIT program with job offers from RCA, Universal, and Mercury Records.

63.

Page 65: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIM (V.O.)She seems good.

BACK TO:

INT. APARTMENT, LEXIA AND JIM’S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Joey and Jim look at Georgia Georgeson’s head shot on the wall. She's very attractive with soft brown hair and large green eyes.

JOEY(grinning at the photo)

Yeah, her music’s really good.

JIM(confidently)

Let’s definitely go with her.

Lexia nods.

KELLYShall we vote?

They all nod.

LEXIAGeorgia Georgeson?

They raise their hands and the vote is unanimous.

EXT. UCLA CAMPUS, MUSIC SCHOOL - DAY

The band meets with Georgia in the audio studio.

GEORGIAWell, the main thing is that you're music sounds old-fashioned. Your technique and songs are good, but that rock band style just isn't cool anymore.

(beat)I'd like to add a more electronic element to what you guys are making.

Jim looks like he's about to protest and Lexia kicks his foot.

GEORGIA (CONT’D)I’m thinking synths.

JOEYThat sounds cool!

64.

Page 66: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

Georgia doesn't wait for the approval of the rest of the band.

She jots down a note in her notebook and then looks up at them, equally excited for the project.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

LEXIAWe all really liked Georgia but were still wary after the whole Billy Brad situation.

A look of realization comes over Corrine’s face.

CORRINEBut this is Georgia Georgeson? The famous producer?

Lexia nods and leans back.

LEXIABut we didn’t know what to expect at the time, and four months had already gone by.

Lexia takes a sip of water.

She pauses dramatically.

LEXIA (CONT’D)But then something crazy happened.

(beat)We got this team of students from UCLA who started working with us.

MONTAGE - The Blue Jays HAVE SUCCESS AT UCLA

A.) INT. DESIGN SCHOOL BUILDING, UCLA - DAY. The band leans over a table looking at their new posters and album cover art.

LEXIA (V.O.)We had a publicist and a design student for our publicity, and UCLA students started to know about us.

B.) EXT. UCLA CAMPUS, WELCOME WEEK. The band plays for thousands of students.

LEXIA (V.O.)Our gigs would start up and the crowds would grow which was pretty exciting.

65.

C.) INT. MUSIC VENUE, LA. A gig at a hip venue near UCLA. It is crowded with student onlookers. A team of UCLA students wearing headsets monitor their performance from the side.

LEXIA (V.O.)We also got a band manager, DAWN, who started getting us bigger and bigger gigs in town.

BACK TO:

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia leans back in her chair, a little smug.

Corrine changes the subject slightly.

CORRINEYou must have been spending a lot of time with your bandmates during this time.

Lexia nods.

LEXIAOh, you have no idea.

CORRINEBut there's one thing you haven't talked to us much about yet.

Lexia doesn’t know what she’s getting at.

LEXIAWhat do you mean?

Corrine gestures towards the audience.

CORRINE(slyly)

We all know about you and Jim.

Lexia blushes.

CORRINE (CONT’D)Isn’t this around the time you started offically dating?

INT. APARTMENT, LEXIA AND JIM’S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Jim lies on the lower bunk and Lexia lies on the upper bunk. They're both wide awake.

66.

Page 68: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIM(excited)

Lex, come down here I just got a crazy idea for a new song.

Lexia sighs, but clambers down the latter to join Jim on his bunk.

Jim's been scribbling in his song notebook, illuminated by a small reading light.

He picks up his guitar and begins to play softly.

JIM (CONT’D)Here’s the chorus.

JIM (CONT’D)(singing)

He might not make it all the way there, but he's still a happy man.

He’s got his friends and he’s got some time to spend upon his land.

Lexia joins in.

LEXIA(singing)

He’s in love he’s been in love but he can’t tell anyone.

Jim takes a turn.

JIM(singing)

She’s in love yeah she’s in love but she can’t tell anyone.

They giggle, it sounds catchy.

Jim pulls out a recorder so they can capture the new song.

JIM (CONT’D)(singing)

She’s in love, yeah she’s in love but she can’t tell anyone.

LEXIA(singing)

He’s in love he’s been in love but he can’t tell anyone.

Lexia stops the recording.

67.

Page 69: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIA (CONT’D)I have an idea!

Jim hands her the guitar.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Pick?

He hands her the pick and their hands touch for a moment. They both blush, but stare at each other, captivated.

After a moment Jim leans in to kiss her. She's tempted, but just before their lips touch--

LEXIA (CONT’D)We can’t.

JIMWhy not?

Lexia pulls away.

LEXIAWhat about Joey and Kelly? What about the band!

JIMIt doesn’t matter! We’re doing so well.

Jim opens his laptop. He pulls up their album statistics, where a graph shows the downloads for their new album have reached 2,000 and are steadily increasing.

JIM (CONT’D)We’re making it already.

LEXIAThis isn’t enough.

JIMBut it’s a start!

He rubs her back.

LEXIATons of people put out albums everyday.

She looks down, sorrowfully.

LEXIA (CONT’D)We’re still just nobodies.

68.

Page 70: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

Jim puts his arm around Lexia to comfort her and a tear slides down her cheek.

JIMWhat’s wrong?

LEXIAI’m never gonna make it. My dad was right.

JIM(soothingly)

C’mon. We’re all in this together. We’ll make it as a team.

Lexia cries harder, burrowing her face into Jim's shoulder. He rubs her back.

JIM (CONT’D)C’mon.

LEXIAWe can’t.

JIMBut we'll use the inspiration for songwriting.

Lexia hesitates but then kisses him.

INT. APARTMENT, KITCHEN - MORNING

Jim and Lexia come into the kitchen at the same time. Kelly and Joey are sitting there, eyebrows raised.

KELLYMorning.

JOEYDid you two sleep well?

Do they know? Jim and Lexia glance at each other, blushing.

LEXIAFine.

JIMYeah.

Kelly smirks, pouring herself a cup of coffee.

KELLYSo... what’s on the agenda for today?

Lexia pulls out her planner.

69.

Page 71: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIAJoey, go to Universal. I heard  Benny Blanco and Kuk Harrell hang out at Solo café between 5 - 7.

Lexia turns to Kelly next.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Kelly, you should try RCA today. Cirkut and Pharrell Williams will be there – try to catch them when they're on break.

Kelly nods, putting on her coat.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Jim, I think you should try Son-

He cuts her off.

JIM(hurt)

Aren’t we going together?

LEXIANo, I’m going to try Mercury records today.

JIMCan’t I come?

LEXIANot this time.

EXT. MUSIC DISTRACT, LOS ANGELES - LATER

Jim pulls the van to the side of the street as Joey, Lexia, and Kelly unbuckle.

LEXIA Meet back here at 10! Call if anything changes.

Jim nods as the others clamber out of the car.

EXT. VAN - SAME TIME

Lexia, Joey, and Kelly wait at the bus stop on the opposite corner. After a few moments a bus comes into view. Lexia looks from the bus to Jim's car and back to the bus. The bus screeches to a stop and Joey and Kelly board but, at the last second, Lexia darts away.

Kelly calls after her, but the bus doors close and it pulls away.

LEXIA(distantly)

Taking a cab!

Lexia grabs a cab just as Jim finds a gap in the traffic and pulls into the street. Jim notices her in his rearview mirror and starts to follow the cab.

He follows the best he can, but when he reaches the highway she's lost amongst the sea of four lane traffic.

INT. BUS - 20 MINUTES LATER

Joey and Kelly exit the bus at the same stop and then head in different directions.

KELLYSee you in a bit!

EXT. UNIVERSAL RECORDS - 20 MINUTES LATER

Joey loiters outside Universal Records, looking around for producers.

EXT. RCA - SAME TIME

Kelly waits outside RCA, also looking around for producers.

EXT. UNIVERSAL RECORDS - SAME TIME

Joey stares longingly at a café across the street.

Someone stands in front of them, but they appear out of focus in comparison to the neon “Cheeseburgers Served Here” sign. The person comes into focus. A YOUNG CELEBRITY.

YOUNG CELEBRITYYou hungry?

Joey’s jaw drops. He tries to speak but can’t.

EXT. UNIVERSAL RECORDS - MOMENTS LATER

Joey and the Young Celebrity walk towards the restaurant together.

EXT. MEETING PLACE - 10PM

Jim pulls up to the same spot where she dropped everyone else off at. Joey and Kelly are waiting, but Lexia is not there.

KELLYWhere’s Lex?

Joey checks his text messages. There’s one from Lexia.

JOEYSaid she found her own way home.

INT. APARTMENT, LEXIA AND JIM’S BEDROOM - LATER

Jim and Lexia lie in Jim’s lower bunk, cuddling and intertwining their hands. Moonlight shines across their content faces.

JIMI think this is the happiest I’ve ever been.

(beat)I never would have been brave enough to do this whole music thing without you.

He kisses her on the head.

LEXIAAnd to think, you almost didn’t let me in the band.

JIMI must’ve been crazy.

Lexia becomes a little agitated, letting go of Jim’s hand.

LEXIAJim, can I tell you something?

JIMOf course, anything.

She fidgets and then sits up.

LEXIAMy dad had the same dream as I do when he was our age. He had a band and talent, the whole package, and it all fell apart.

JIMWhy?

72.

Page 74: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIAI don’t know. He never told me explicitly, but I was born when he was just 19.

Understanding comes over Jim suddenly.

JIMAh. But we’re being safe...

He hugs her and kisses her exposed shoulder gently.

LEXIAI know, I know. It’s not that.

She’s quiet for a moment.

JIMWhat is it?

LEXIAI’ve been telling you all that he was fine with this, but truth is he’s not.

A beat.

LEXIA (CONT’D)He’s always said I’ll never make it and I’m deluding myself.

Lexia fumbles in the desk for the green guitar pick. She shows it to Jim.

JIMThe most important thing is that we’re trying and we’re happy.

(beat)Just don’t listen to him.

LEXIAI know.

(beat)But I can’t bear the thought of proving him right.

JIMI won’t let that happen. We’re in this together.

Lexia cuddles closer to him, feeling safe in his arms.

JIM (CONT’D)I love you.

73.

Page 75: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

Lexia kisses him.

A beat.

Lexia starts to giggle.

JIM (CONT’D)What?

LEXIAWell there’s one question I have for you.

(beat)Why were such a hard ass back in high school?

Jim giggles, thinking it over for a minute.

JIMTo get the ladies, of course! No one likes a cheerful rock star.

INT. APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

The band is gathered in the living room, playing cards. After a round ends Lexia stands up.

LEXIAI need some fresh air.

She pulls on her coat and grabs her bag.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Gonna go for a drive.

Kelly, Jim, and Joey look at each other, confused. She’s never requested fresh air before.

JOEY(reasonably)

If you need fresh air why are you going for a drive?

She’s already outside.

LEXIA (O.S.)I’ll put the windows down!

Lexia grabs the keys from the key hook and closes the door to the apartment behind her.

JOEYShouldn’t we be practicing tonight? The big show’s on Saturday.

74.

Page 76: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIM(to himself)

Where did she go?

INT. APARTMENT, LEXIA AND JIM’S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

Jim goes into his and Lexia's room and finds Lexia's planner in the desk drawer. He flips through until he finds the current date, where the event "9pm, Zander Café" is marked.

INT. APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Kelly and Joey are exactly where they stood before, still looking confused.

Jim grabs his coat.

JIMI’m going out too.

He closes the door behind him before they can say anything.

EXT. APARTMENT - NIGHT

Jim hails a cab and it pulls away.

EXT. ZANDER CAFÉ - 20 MINUTES LATER

Jim exits the cab and runs up to the restaurant. He peers in through the window and finds Lexia seated next to an man of about 42, JOHN PRICE. They are talking flirtatiously, and he brushes a strand of Lexia's hair behind her ear.

INT. ZANDER CAFÉ - CONTINUOUS

At this, Jim gasps and runs into the restaurant. He tries to side step a waiter, but is stopped by the HOST. The host wrinkles his nose at Jim's scruffy appearance. This is clearly a black tie restaurant.

The host comes up to Jim.

HOST(speaking with a pompous French accent)

Can I help you?

JIMI just have to talk to my girlfriend over there!

He points towards Lexia and Mr. Price’s table.

75.

Page 77: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

HOSTAbsolument non. That is a very important private meeting.

JIM(protesting)

Please, I just need a minute! This is important!

He tries to shake off the host but three more waiters appear and together drag him out. As Jim is pulled away, Lexia glances up and sees him. Her eyes widen for a moment, but then she turns back to Mr. Price, pretending not to have noticed.

INT. ZANDER CAFÉ, DINING AREA - CONTINUOUS

MR. PRICESo it starts at 9pm on Saturday?

LEXIAYes. I’m so honored that you’ll be able to make it.

MR. PRICEWell, I’m looking forward to seeing what you have.

Mr. Price touches her hand in a romantic way. She blushes, looking down.

From outside again, Jim sees.

INT. APARTMENT - LATER

It’s past 1am. Jim waits up in the living room, looking distraught.

Lexia comes in. She’s changed back into her regular clothes, but some of her make-up remains.

JIMWhere were you all evening?

LEXIAJust needed some fresh air.

Lexia pours herself a cup of tea in the kitchen.

JIMI saw you at Zander Café!

Jim stands.

76.

Page 78: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIM (CONT’D)Are you sleeping with him?

LEXIAYou followed me?

Jim doesn’t respond.

Lexia sets down the kettle.

LEXIA (CONT’D)I was having a meeting with the president of RCA.

JIMWhy didn’t you tell me? You’re the one who always says we’re in this together.

LEXIAIt’s not what it looked like.

Jim grabs his coat.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Jim, wait! I can explain.

He leaves the house, furious.

Joey and Kelly come out of their room. Joey’s wearing footie pajamas.

KELLYIs everything okay?

Lexia’s on the brink of tears. She hides her face in her hands.

LEXIAHe’s gone.

KELLYHe’ll come back.

Lexia stares out the window, sorrow in her eyes.

INT. APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM - THE NEXT DAY

It’s the day of the big show and Jim’s nowhere to be found.

Kelly tries his cell phone. There’s no answer.

77.

Page 79: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

INT. APARTMENT - LATER

The band is agitated.

LEXIAI’ll call and tell them we’re not coming.

KELLYWe’ll still go. I can sing Jim’s parts and, Joey, you and I will have to do our best.

EXT. APARTMENT - MOMENTS LATER

Lexia, Joey, and Kelly pack up the van. It doesn’t feel right without Jim there.

INT. VAN - MOMENTS LATER

They drive in silence to the gig.

Lexia dials Jim’s CELLPHONE. It goes to voice mail.

LEXIAJim it’s me. Please, please come. I know you hate me but do it for Joey and Kelly. C’mon.

EXT. BIG VENUE - SATURDAY NIGHT

It’s raining as Joey and Kelly unpack the van. Lexia calls Jim again from below the awning on the brick concert building.

LEXIAWe need you, man. Please.

(beat)Just come.

INT. BIG VENUE, BACKSTAGE - LATER

Lexia huddles by the curtain calling Jim again.

LEXIA(Annoyed)

Jim, c’mon. This is getting ridiculous. Just swallow your pride and get your ass over here. You’re only hurting yoursel--

Someone taps Lexia’s shoulder. She doesn’t look up.

78.

Page 80: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIA (CONT’D)(gruffly)

Give me a minute!

She turns back to her phone and sighs, softening.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Look, I just really need you here.

(beat)And not just for this show. I need you here because I love you. I loved you in high school, I love you now, and I love every single moment I spend with you.

(beat)I’m not always good at showing it, but you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

She’s tapped on the shoulder once more.

A beat. Lexia looks up.

LEXIA (CONT’D)(very annoyed)

Jesu--

It’s Jim.

Lexia blushes.

LEXIA (CONT’D)Oh--

JIMIt’s me you bozo. And we’re supposed to be on stage now!

Joey and Kelly shake their heads.

Jim and Lexia kiss.

An MC comes over.

MCYou’re up!

The band huddles together in a circle for a quick moment. They hold hands, eyes closed as they reflect internally on their year in LA. As the suspense builds they pass around a hand squeeze and head for the stage.

79.

Page 81: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

INT. BIG VENUE, STAGE - LATER

The band has taken their positions on stage and wait in the shadows for the lights to do on. Lexia spies Mr. Price in the audience.

MCPlease welcome...

(beat)The Blue Jays!

The audience claps as the lights go on. Lexia glitters in a sequined dress under the colorful stage lights.

We see Georgia standing in the crowd, watching proudly.

SLOW MOTION

Lexia’s heart BEATS LOUDLY for several moments. She looks back at Kelly who sets the tempo, clapping her drum sticks together four times.

BACK TO NORMAL SPEED

The band bursts into a rendition of Long Drive.

The crowd and the band are energized and a minute or so into the song, Lexia boldly comes down the stage and begins to wade through the audience, shaking and grabbing hands of fans as she passes by.

In the back of the venue the light designer finds a spotlight and follows Lexia with it through the crowd.

Lexia reaches Mr. Price, who is delighted when she playfully runs her hands through his hair.

MOMENTS LATER

Lexia returns to the stage just in time for the song’s climax/bridge.

Kelly does a terrific DRUM SOLO, and Joey nails his bass riff. Jim joins Lexia center stage where they share the mic to sing the final refrain.

The music cuts and the audience roars. The band comes forward and takes each other’s hands for a bow.

INT. BIG VENUE, BACKSTAGE - MOMENTS LATER

The band cheers and gathers around for a hug. Jim rumples Lexia’s hair fondly.

80.

Page 82: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIMYou were amazing!

LEXIAWe did it!

Lexia squeals and jumps into Jim’s arms.

Kelly and Joey notice Price coming over, and signal Lexia's attention, excited.

Price has a huge smile on his face and reaches out his hand to shake Lexia's.

MR. PRICE(to Lexia)

Fantastic. Really superb. We’ll talk soon.

He hands her a copy of his business card, eyes only on her.

INT. APARTMENT - LATER

The band is gathered in the living room. Mr. Price’s business card lies on the coffee table and they all look at it.

JIM(upset)

He was only looking at you.

LEXIALook, it’s probably just because he’d already met me.

Jim rubs his head in his hands.

JIMHe just wants another teenage solo artist.

KELLYC’mon Jim. Lexia wouldn’t sign anything without us.

(a beat)Would you?

Lexia looks away.

LEXIAOf course not.

81.

Page 83: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

INT. JIM AND LEXIA’S ROOM - LATER

Jim and Lexia lie on the lower bunk once more. Lexia leans over to put her arms around Jim, but he pulls away slightly.

JIMYou’ll talk to Price?

LEXIAOf course I will.

INT. RCA OFFICE - DAY (ONE WEEK LATER)

A corner conference room with a large, oval table. Lexia is meeting with Mr. Price and a board of producers from RCA.

MR. PRICE(condescendingly)

Your bandmates seem like good kids, but be reasonable.

(beat)In the industry we can offer you world class musicians and top consultants. At the end of the day, your friends will only hold you back.

Lexia fingers her father’s guitar pick, reminded of her dad’s prophecy that she would never make it.

CUT TO:

INT. LEXIA’S HOUSE, BEDROOM (ONE YEAR AGO)

Lexia sits on her bed and Tim grabs her guitar out of her hands.

TIMYou’re deluding yourself if you think you’ll make it.

(beat)You’ll never be anybody.

BACK TO:

INT. RCA OFFICE - DAY

Mr. Price waits hopefully.

After a moment’s hesitation, Lexia uncaps her pen and signs the record deal with a flourish.

82.

Page 84: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia shakes her head as she recounts a slightly modified version of the story to Corrine.

LEXIAWe were all taken by surprise.

(beat)Of course I refused the deal and told Mr. Price that I wouldn't accept without the others.

CORRINEThat must have been brave to turn down RCA!

LEXIAWell, my bandmates thought the same thing. They knew the deal was too good to turn down and told me they’d be happy for me.

Corrine wipes a tear from the corner of her eye.

Lexia shrugs.

EXT. APARTMENT - DAY (4 MONTHS AFTER THE DEBUT PERFORMANCE)

SUPER: “FOUR MONTHS LATER”

Lexia pulls up outside the apartment in a private car. It's been one year since they moved to LA and Jim, Joey, and Kelly are moving out of the apartment now that their lease is up.

Lexia gets out of the car and walks up to the front door. She knocks, a little nervous.

Joey opens it.

JOEY(nonplused)

Oh, it’s you.

LEXIAI just wanted to say goodbye.

Joey starts to shut the door in her face.

JOEYSorry, we don’t have time for assholes.

83.

Page 85: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIM (O.S.)Tell the landlord we’re almost out of this shit hole!

Kelly comes into view and spots Lexia.

KELLY(disgusted)

It’s her.

Lexia enters the apartment and faces Kelly and Joey.

LEXIAOkay, okay, we’re not friends. But just let me grab my things.

Kelly laughs dryly.

KELLYWe were never friends. You used us all a long.

Lexia says nothing, but heads back to her room. She is nervous as she pushes open the door.

Jim sits on the bed holding his guitar on his lap and playing a minor chord progression.

Jim looks down as soon as he notices her.

LEXIAJim, I....

JIMLook, I really don’t have any interest in talking to you.

Lexia walks over to the dresser and loads her pathetic belongings things into a small bag. A tear threatens to fall from her eye.

As she turns to go Jim says softly--

JIM (CONT’D)Was all of it fake? Our whole relationship too?

A tear slides down Lexia’s cheek.

LEXIAJim, I’m sorry. I never saw this coming.

A beat.

84.

Page 86: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

LEXIA (CONT’D)(lamely)

Can’t we be friends?

Jim sets down his guitar angrily.

JIMOf course not! You could be the most famous, wealthy celebrity in the whole world and there’s no amount of money you could pay me to be your friend.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Back in the show.

CORRINEAre you still in touch with the band?

Lexia's smile falters for a moment, and a bead of sweat begins to form on her brow.

LEXIA(unconvincing)

We’re still very fond of each other, but after that our careers ended up going in different directions.

INT. COLLEGE PROFESSOR OFFICE - DAY

Kelly is now an Associate Professor of music at UCLA. She sits at her desk, wearing a scholarly outfit.

LEXIA (V.O.)Kelly went back to school and got a degree in musicology. She graduated early and became an ethnomusicology professor.

EXT. COLLEGE CAMPUS - DAY

Joey wears a chef’s suit and decorates a fancy cake.

LEXIA (V.O.)Joey did his undergrad at Hamilton and is now in grad school for cooking.

85.

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW, PROJECTION BOOTH - DAY

Jim stands in the back of the auditorium in the projection booth, looking menacing.

LEXIA (V.O.)And Jim does sound engineering now. I think around here, in fact.

BACK TO:

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

At that moment Lexia glances up and notices Jim in the back of the booth. She quickly hides her expression of shock and turns her attention back to Corrine.

Lexia smiles, but she is sweating a little more now, and is becoming anxious to leave.

CORRINEWell our time’s almost up, but I have one last question for you.

Lexia nods.

CORRINE (CONT’D)(gesticulating)

Way back in high school, how did you know that this was what you wanted to do? What called you to LA to make it happen?

FLASHBACK:

INT. LEXIA’S HOUSE, BEDROOM - EVENING (2009)

15-year-old Lexia is on the phone with Mr. Price.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. MR. PRICE’S OFFICE AT RCA - SAME TIME

Mr. Price holds Lexia’s amateur demo tape(the same one she gave to Jim) in his hands, considering it, but shaking his head.

MR. PRICEThis is a decent effort, but it’s really not good enough for me to sign you.

He motions to put down the receiver.

86.

Page 88: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

MR. PRICE (CONT’D)Best of lu--

LEXIAI’ll do anything. How can I make it better?

Mr. Price chuckles softly. She is not the first girl he’s had this conversation with.

MR. PRICEGet a backup band, come to LA. I won’t be easy and you’ll probably fail, but if music’s what you need to do you have to go all in.

LEXIAI’ll do it.

MR. PRICEI'm not saying I’d recommend this, but if you ever get here with a band, give me a call.

Lexia nods, a determined expression on her face.

LEXIAThank you. I’m sure you’ll be hearing from me again.

Mr. Price looks doubtful. He's heard this before too and doesn't expect another call from starry-eyed Lexia Black.

BACK TO:

INT. LEXIA’S HOUSE, BEDROOM - EVENING (2009)

Lexia hangs up the phone.

BACK TO:

INT. CORRINE MICHAEL SHOW - DAY

Lexia shrugs.

LEXIAJust had a feeling, I guess.

For a split second Corrine looks menacing. Could she have figured out the real story?

Lexia blinks and Corrine’s sweet expression has returned.

87.

Page 89: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

CORRINEWhat amazing intuition.

A beat.

Lexia forces a smile. They both look at the clock, their hour is up.

CORRINE (CONT’D)It was a pleasure to have you on the show.

They shake hands.

LEXIAThank you. It was wonderful to be here.

Lexia stands and can't help but glance back at the projection booth. Jim is no longer there, and Lexia gulps.

She maintains her cool as she walks off stage, but as soon as she's behind the curtains tears off her lav mic, and runs to the dressing room.

INT. DRESSING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Lexia kicks off her heals, puts on a pair of expensive but slightly more comfortable shoes, and pulls on her coat.

INT. STUDIO BUILDING, OUTSIDE OF DRESSING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

A large security guard greets Lexia and walks near her as they leave the building. He opens the door and she walks outside.

EXT. STUDIO BUILDING - CONTINUOUS

The air is cool and it's a gray fall day. Leaves swirl in the streets and Lexia blinks in the brighter light.

She starts towards the car that awaits her when Jim appears. She stops abruptly, looking at him.

He has a slight glow surrounding him in the bright light.

The security guard motions to keep him back, but Lexia raises her hand, stopping him.

JIMWell? Was it worth it?

Lexia looks to the sky, holding back tears for a moment.

88.

Page 90: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

She hardens.

LEXIAWorth what?

A beat.

LEXIA (CONT’D)(defensively)

I have everything I ever wanted.

JIMMaybe on the outside. But on the inside you haven't changed. You're still the same unhappy girl I used to know.

LEXIALike you should talk. Excuse me, or was it you in the back of the audio booth engineering my big interview?

She smirks and folds her arms.

JIMYou don’t know anything.

A beat.

JIM (CONT’D)At least I have a heart and a happy family.

(beat)You couldn’t pay me to be you.

Lexia looks away.

LEXIAGoodbye, Jim.

A beat.

JIM It was all just a game for you, wasn’t it?

Lexia turns back.

LEXIAYou have no idea how I feel. How I feel about you, or about any of this.

(beat)It's not easy, you know.

89.

Page 91: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

JIMSeven years and you still can't fess up to what you did to us. To me.

LEXIAI’m sorry.

She blinks back a tear before reflexively reaching out for Jim’s hand.

LEXIA (CONT’D)(hurriedly)

Maybe we could give it another try.

At the moment someone in the distance, PERSON 1, notices Lexia and points.

PERSON 1Look! It’s Lexia Black!

People start to hurry forward, and Jim is gone. She glances around for him and then slides into the back of the car before the oncoming stampede can reach her.

INT. PRIVATE CAR - CONTINUOUS

Lexia looks out the window and rain begins to fall on the windshield. She catches the driver’s eye in the rearview mirror and they both look away quickly.

EXT. LEXIA’S APARTMENT BUILDING - CONTINUOUS

Lexia is whisked inside by another security guard. They ride the elevator up to the penthouse and he nods as she exits into her apartment.

INT. PENTHOUSE - CONTINUOUS

The elevator doors slide shut and Lexia is left alone. The furniture is dark gray and bright sunlight is obscured by thick, bar-like wooden blinds.

She checks her phone and there are no messages.

INT. PENTHOUSE, OFFICE - MOMENTS LATER

Lexia walks into her office where she has a mahogany desk and more dark furniture. She takes a seat and opens the drawer. Inside is an old photograph of her and Jim hugging, Joey and Kelly standing slightly in the distance but smiling at the camera.

90.

Page 92: THE BAND by (Ava Burnham) - University of Michiganeburnham/screenwriting/the_band.pdflead guitar parts. He’s confident and sexy and worshiped by onlookers and bandmates alike. A

A stray tear slides down Lexia's nose but she quickly wipes it away. Next to the photo is a new, sleek looking journal with the words “Songs About Jim” embroidered on it. She picks up the notebook and opens to a new page.

THE END

91.
