    Thinking vs Intelligence

The belief that intelligence and thinkingare the same has led to two unfortunateconclusions in education:

    1. That nothing should be done forstudents with a high intelligence becausethey will automatically be good thinkers.

    2. That nothing can be done for studentswithout a high intelligence because theycannot ever be good thinkers.

    Intelligence, Thinking &

    Knowledge

Thinking and intelligence are quite separate.

Intelligence is like thehorsepower of a car.

Thinking is like theskillof the car driver.

The relationship between intelligence andthinking is like between a car and thedriver of that car.

A less powerful car may be driven well.

A powerful car may be driven badly.

The skill of the car driver determines howthe power of the car is used.

The skill of the thinker determines how

    intelligence is used.

Therefore, intelligence & thinking are notthe same

    The Intelligence Trap

Highly intelligent people can be poor thinkers

because they fall into the intelligence trap when

there a lot ofjustifications. For example: you may immediately say the man on the

bicycle would be able to move faster IF they

travel the same distance; if the tyres are not

    punctured; if the man riding the bicycle is notsick or old; if the bicycle is not moving uphill;

    if.and on and on.

    2 Aspects of Intelligence Trap

    1. The more intelligent the person thebetter the defense of their own view.

The better the defense of the view the less thatperson sees any need to listen to others.

As a result, many highly intelligent minds aretrapped in poor ideas because they can defendthem so well.

    2. He thinks he is more intelligent than others(may be a correct view) wants to get mostsatisfaction from that intelligence.

The quickest way is to prove someone else wrongwhich establishes his superiority. Being constructive isless rewarding.

So, being critical and destructive is a much moreappealing use of intelligence.

It is even worse with the Western notion that criticalthinking is enough.

    Practice

Everyday we have to think. Does this

    practice make us better thinkers?

Unfortunately, it does not automaticallyfollow that practice improves a skill.

If you practice poor thinking for years, you

will become an extremely skilled poorthinker.

    Practice

    For example, consider a 60-year-old

journalist who has been typing thousands

of words everyday but is still typing withtwo fingers. At no point does practice in

two-finger typing can turn her into a

skilled touch typistshe needs a course. We need to learn methods of thinking

This is what this course is about.
