Family Members Make A Difference

We continue highlighting a few of the family members who make such a huge difference in

the lives of our Kings Way family. Not only do you spend time with your own family mem-

bers, helping with their care but you develop relationships with other residents.

Chuck Margeson - who comes daily to help with his Mom, Irene. Chuck goes above and

beyond to help with decorating for events, moving furniture around, assisting and joining in

programmed activities and even taking the time to sit and teach card games to the clients of

the Adult Day Program. Thank you so much for noticing how difficult it is for one or two

people to get some jobs done on time!

Wayne Sprague - who comes every day to help his mother-in-law, Dolly. Wayne, the self-

appointed “Zoo Keeper” has taken on the responsibility of feeding, watering and changing

the bird cages daily as well as feeding and changing our new rabbit's cage on weekends and

holidays. He has developed a close bond with other residents and staff members and helps

whenever he can. Thank you Wayne for lightening my load!

Beth Wilson - who comes each day to help with her Mom, Lillian, and also takes time to visit

with other residents who she recognizes as needing additional attention. Thank you for

wanting to do more!

Teresa Shannon - who visits daily with her Mom, Isobel. She has not only donated her time,

but money as well for our Bunny's medical costs, giving us a box full of pennies for us to wrap

and cash in! Thank you Theresa, it will be money well spent!

And to all the others that we haven't been able to mention, thank you from the bottom of

our hearts for all you do. You are all instrumental in making our house a home!

Special Salute To Staff Member - Doreen McCullough

In July 2013, Care Attendant Doreen Mccullough saw an opportunity to help her fellow Canadians when she saw the terrible flooding occurring in Calgary and surrounding communities in Southern Alberta. Over 100,000 people were displaced from their homes, many losing everything. Taking time out of her vacation Doreen and boyfriend, Peter went to the Canadian Red Cross to see where they could help. The first day of their volunteering, they were asked to help coordinate the relief lines. As residents came to the Red Cross for supplies and/or money, Doreen would help to make sure they had all their paperwork in order to speed the process. Day Two of volunteering took the form of helping clean up a home in the town of High River. She, along with a handful of others put on gloves, masks and overalls and went to work, shoveling muck and sludge out of one of the many affected homes and trying to save as much of the residents’ belongings as possible. Doreen stated it was a terribly sad sight to witness, people’s memories and cherished possessions being thrown out because of the water and mold damage. She stated that at one point, she had to go behind a barn and just cry. She also wanted to say that the people of High River, were amazing, they rallied together in the face of adversity with eve-ryone helping each other get through the disaster. She stated that it was not uncommon to see children with red wagons filled with water coolers coming to the sites and neighbors set-ting up makeshift sandwich tables for volunteers in appreciation for all the help complete

strangers were giving them.

On behalf of the residents and staff of Kings Way Care Centre, we would like to thank you

Doreen, for coming to the aid of other Canadians. We salute you!!!

In Loving Memory

Crafts & Prizes

The residents at Kings Way enjoy making crafts and love BINGO. We are looking of any craft ideas or prize suggestions that you may want to pass along or donate. We are sure that family members, volunteers or staff may have some wonderful suggestions!!

Larry & His Train

A few months ago, Larry Ryan came to Kings Way Care Centre from the hospital. He has a difficult time communicating and finds it very hard to get his desires vocalized. We discovered he worked for CP Rail for a number of years and thought that a model train set might bring some joy back into his life. Carol Kent coordinated the purchase of a second-hand train set from Kijiji and went to work setting it up in the upper dining room. On February 28

th, Larry was brought to the dining room to see ‘his’ train. He

immediately started smiling and talking about his years working for the railway, even interacting with another male resident who happened to be watching as well….Larry was content watching the little train tour the track for about 30 minutes that first day – obviously enjoying the memories it was bringing back. Congratulations staff of Kings Way for always thinking of our residents and bringing joy to every face!
