The Eden Alternative - It Can Be Different
The Eden Alternative Philosophy of Care is guided by a set of Ten
Principles. This month we will explore Principle #3.
The Eden Alternative Principle #3
Loving companionship is the antidote to loneliness. Elders deserve easy access to
human and animal companionship.
You may have heard someone you love say they are lonely even though they are sitting in a
dining room with 30-40 people. Having true companionship and being connected is about more
than being surrounded by people who are friendly towards you. It is about being in meaningful,
and sometimes deep, relationships with others. People are more open when they have built
consistent, caring relationships with those around them. It is through relationships that we gain
trust in one another. When we trust we are at our best and commit to helping one another
through good and bad times. When caring relationships are nurtured, people are willing to
speak and listen so that needs are met. A safe environment is created where elders are willing
to speak up and share their ideas and knowledge.
Companionship stretches further than the doors of the homes and organization. Volunteers,
friends, and families can be a resource to spread the message of person directed care and a more
positive Elderhood out into the larger community. Reaching out into the community, fostering
new relationships not only help the Elders find the companionship they need but also provides a
reservoir of ideas that can stimulate ongoing growth.
Companionship can be accomplished by simple measures such as interacting with the same
children on a regular basis; having animals as permanent residents at the home; having
permanent care partners on each neighbourhood; learning the Elders' stories; care partners
developing meaningful relationships with Elders and other Care partners.
Being deeply known matters. Companionship breeds engagement.
Cough & Fever plus either
a sore throat, sore joints, sore muscles or exhaustion.
