ATLAS – Gr. 12s only - is an exciting "career prep" program designed for students who have a strong personal interest in adventure recreation. ATLAS is a practical, “hands on” course taught almost exclusively away from the school, in outdoor settings, in a variety of seasons. Dance - The dance program is under the direction of Jennifer MacMillan. Ms. MacMillan holds a BFA with a Major in Dance from Simon Fraser University (CAN) and a MA in Teaching Dance from the University of Surrey (UK). She is also a registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance and a member of the British Columbia Dance Educators' Association. She is passionate about and committed to bringing high quality dance education to students within the public school system. Dance students in grades nine through twelve attend classes four days weekly and train in ballet, modern, jazz and hip hop. Yeti The YETI Outdoor program is open to any Grade 10-12 student who is currently enrolled in a full course load at Prince Charles Secondary School. Mountain Biking, Nature Photography, Climbing, Camping, Paddling and a variety of outdoor certifications make this program a natural draw for our secondary learners in Creston.
The program presents elective courses that are worth 4 credits each. (per/100 hours of activity). Essentially, 4-6 weekend activities and activity prep are required to earn the four credits.
In order to fund the program, and maintain the goal of offering activities at no cost to students and families, students must be fully scheduled.

Mount Sentinel Performance and Media Academy (Academy PM) is a cross-curricular program that is designed to prepare students to enter post secondary education or a career in the film, theatre, game and digital media industry. This program includes a rotating selection of credits but always includes:

This program is one full semester in length and offers students an opportunity to work on major, student led projects and

In the spring students will receive their Lakewater Level 1 paddling certification as a part of the course, which will include a 5 day canoe and hiking trip on Slocan Lake, in Valhalla Provincial Park. Last year students in this class hiked the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail along the southwest coast of Vancouver Island.
Outdoor Adventures Winter Course The Outdoor Adventures Winter course focuses on exposing students to the brilliant ski and snowboard culture of the Kootenays, as well as winter safety and survival skills. Students visit with Stellar Heli Ski to learn about the business side of skiing, which includes a tour of the helicopter and practice using transceivers. The course also includes an Avalanche Safety Training day and a Winter Survival Workshop with local experts. world to take part in our one, two, and three-month winter program.
The program is designed to give students the best of a Canadian

Structure and Jurisdiction The education system in BC is structured as follows:

Each province or territory sets its own policies, regulations, standards, and curriculum.
Role of Teachers Teachers are members of the British Columbia College of Teachers, which
ensures they are competent and suitable for the important role they play in
society and have graduated with a 5 year degree from a recognized BC or
Canadian university.
Independent school teachers may be certified by the Ministry of Education
but this is not mandatory.
Public school teachers are also members of the BC Teachers’ Federation, a
provincial professional union affiliated with the Canadian Teachers' Federation
and Education International.

SD8 Kootenay Lake Update for Agents Our year began with the best start to date and all students are happy in their homes and schools.
I am so excited to tell you about the exciting new things and milestones that have happened in our district recently:
- We were the first district in the province to implement an Intercultural Certificate program which assures the
relationship building between Canadian and International Students
- One of our International Students received a full scholarship in Mathematics to UBC
- Selena Ye from China received a rare entrance scholarship from UBC for $6000.00 - AMAZING
- Our grade 11 students received 10 BCCIE scholarships for $1250.00 each - the most scholarships awarded any
district in the province of BC - BEST IN THE PROVINCE
- We have a new online application form with True North and the application fee can now accompany the
application form by using "Beanstream" which is right on line on our web site.

- We have a new brochure with new pricing for the 2019-2020 school year and beyond. If you are in

- Medical: The BC government has announced that in January 2019, all minor children will receive
medical coverage at a cost ($75/month) after being in Canada for at least 3 months.
- Our district will continue with GuardMe insurance for the first three months and have a top up with Guard.Me
to cover those services and products that the provincial healthcare does not cover.
- We have a new agent contracts with a new commission rate. If you have not received

- We will have a new arrival APP for students in the second semester this year to help them adjust to
their new HOMESTAY families, schools, and communities.
- We have a new pre and post English placement test through Global English which matches the BC
learning outcomes for ELL/ESL learning.
- For the first time we have added Zip lining to our monthly activities.

Step 2: Click the Forgot Your Password Link
Step 3: Enter your email address. This must be your official email address we have on file. Press the Reset Password button. You will see a confirmation message that an email has been sent.
Step 4: Check your inbox for a message with subject starting with “Password Reset Instructions”. If you do not see this message within five minutes, please check your junk/spam folder. Click the link to complete the password request. You will see a message “Reset Password Complete”.
Step 5: Return your inbox and locate another message with subject “TRUE North Password”. Copy the temporary password to your clipboard. Click the Login link.
Step 6: Login using your email address and temporary password copied from step 5.
Step 7: Change your password by entering your old “temporary” password from step 5, and a new password of your choosing. Press Change Password button. Click Continue.
Secure Online Application
8. Secure Online Application – Simplified Sharing
TRUE North online application now supports simplified sharing of applications between agencies and parents and/or students. The basic workflow:
1. Agent creates (or initiates) online application exactly as before (not parent/student).
2. Agent clicks share icon
3. Agent copy/pastes secure URL into an email to parent/student.
4. Agent will be notified when parent has completed application. Note parents CANNOT submit directly to
your school district. They can only complete required sections.

Wrapping up your time in Nelson
We hope you have had a fabulous time in Nelson and have made memories and friendships that will last a
lifetime! The International Programs Team has a few important reminders for you:
How long can I stay? All students must be on a flight home by June 30, 2017 unless you have permission to
extend by our office. Your health insurance ends on June 30 and you must be out of the country by June 30.
Flight details: Your homestay coordinator needs to have your flight details for your return flight home. If
your flights have changed, please make sure the homestay coordinator is aware!
Report cards: Report cards are given out at the end of the school year. However, many of you are leaving before
then. Our office will email a copy of all student’s report card to their agent who will then forward it to the
parents and or student. We keep a copy on our file.
Validation of Report Cards: Students from Mexico, Brazil and Spain– we will be validating your report cards
with the Embassy and then will forward the report cards to your agent by priority mail
Curfew: please remember that curfew and all rules are still in place until you are back in your home countries.
Make sure you have a positive end to this wonderful journey.
Saying goodbye: Do not forget to say goodbye to your counsellor and teachers (and return all textbooks).
I am sure your homestay families will be sad to see you leave! Leaving a thank you card or letter is always a
nice gesture. We will miss you!
Packing it all in! : So much to see and do! Please plan your weekends now. Also, leave time for packing and
any last minute purchases. You may need another suitcase if you have been shopping! Make sure that all
garbage, recyclable items are clear from your room and your room is clean.
Finally, we are sad to see you go but hope you have enjoyed your experience in Canada and will return one day soon! If
you have stories or pictures of your experience in Nelson, it would be wonderful if you could share these with us!

DILIGENCE - A P P L I C AT I O N PROCESS
It cannot be stressed enough, how important it is for the applicant/parent/agent to be vigilant and
diligent with providing the necessary documents during the application process. This includes a
personal letter stating their initial intent for going to Canada and why it will be important for them
to return home. Providing the agency and applicant with a templated letter will help to ensure
successful entry into Canada. A letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution is critical.
All public schools in Canada are DLis and the definition of full-time or part-time studies varies
depending on the educational institution.
BURDEN OF PROOF.
Unlike the criminal law standard - "beyond a doubt,"
- citizenship proof is the civil law standard of"balance of
probabilities." It is up to applicants to demonstrate that the
balance of probabilities indicates that they meet the
requirements of the Act. An officer at a port of entry
may form the opinion that an individual is inadmissible.
DUAL INTENT
IRPA 22(2): A foreign national may become a temporary
resident if the officer is satisfied that they will leave
RESTORATION OF A STUDY PERMIT
IRPR 1s2 - A student who has lost their status may apply to
reinstate or restore their status in accordance with the
regulations. The applicant must apply within 90 days of having
lost their status, meet the initial requirements for their stay,
Restoration of a status cannot be granted at a port of entry.
During a restoration, the student should not leave Canada for
any reason and should not continue to study. Fee for a

IMPLIED STATUS EXTENSION OF A STUDY PERMIT
