(WKJRDA) is the frst established Junior League in Brit-ish Columbia. Te league was ounded just last year, inFebruary o 2011 by Krystal Stevenson.

Krystal ex-plains what mo-tivated her. Iwas in the earlystages o joining

a womans teammysel, when oneday, watching myteenage daughterarrive home rom

school, I realized what a great empowering sport for youngwomen roller derby would be... I asked my daughter Hope(now Wol Haley) i she was interested...and she was, orsure! So she Facebooked and emailed all the young womenshe knew and by the end o the week we held our frstjunior meeting with 13 young women, my daughter and

mysel. From there our league now stretches all over theWest Kootenay, with girls ranging rom ages rom 5 to 18.

Te West Kootenay Junior Roller Derby Associationprovides girls aged 5 to 18 the opportunity to partici-pate in the cutting edge, competitive sport o at trackroller derby. All the kids take a skill testing program thatis broken down into three dierent stages....each stagesgoals need to be met beore moving to the next. Ultim-ately, the girls are ready to compete in a bout.

WKJRDA has a strong philosophy that is designed toinstill positive ideals and help young girls realize their

own potential. Te association strives to create a sae, unand positive environment where girls can be athletic, in-crease their sel-confdence, orge new riendships and beboth sel-empowered and sel-expressive. Tis is a placewhere girls learn teamwork, good values, discipline, con-fdence, interaction and stewardship through the com-petitive sport o at track roller derby.
