Cannabis And TheFuture Of The Industry

We invite you to join us on the evening of Tursday,January 7, 7 pm in the Hume Room of the Hume Hotel forthe Women Grow: Kootenay Chapter kick-off  event.

Tere will be an educational evening featuring presenta-tions by distinguished individuals in the cannabis indus-try, including advocates, CEOs and dispensary directorsdiscussing the current state of cannabis related issues inour municipality.

is event is guarantee to ring a p et ora o va ua einformation and networking opportunities to interestedindividuals and entrepreneurs alike! We encourage peo-ple of all gender identities to participate. Early bird ticketsare $25 and can be purchased online at eventbrite.ca, or atthe door for $30.

Women Grow was created to connect, educate, inspireand empower the next generation of cannabis industryleaders by creating programs, community and eventsfor aspiring and current business executives. Founded in2014 in Denver, Colorado, Women Grow is a for-prot

entity that serves as a catalyst for women to inuence andsucceed in the cannabis industry as the end of marijuanaprohibition occurs on a national scale. Since its inceptiononly a year ago, Women Grow has grown rapidly to 36chapters in the United States and Canada, with chapterevents being held the rst Tursday of every month.

Is this event only for women? No, absolutely not! Personsof every gender identity are welcome and encouraged toparticipate! Why is it so important for women to participatein this industry? To quote our Prime Minister, “It’s 2015”.Temotivation behind Women Grow is equal representation inthe cannabis workforce; when diversity in industry is fairlyrepresented, it more adequately addresses the needs of oursociety as a whole. As of now, women hold 36% of executivepositions in the cannabis industry compared to 22% in theU.S. as a whole and economists predict that the business oflegal cannabis will exceed ten billion dollars within the next ve years. Women are a very important part of this equation.

As Women Grow co-founder and CEO describes*“Once prohibition is lifed, cannabis products become

just like any other household good and we know womenalready control the majority of household spending. Ontop of that women are more likely to be diagnosed with a

chronic illness, more likely to try alternative health ther-apy, and are more likely to be in charge of the wellnessdecisions for their families. One in  ve women will facedepression. On in eight will face breast cancer.Tere is noscenario where I can imagine where women don’t becomethe dominant buyers of cannabis products.”

*Interviews are credited to Canna Insider. Event spon-sored by PlanC BioPharm and Te Kootenay’s MedicineTree. For more info, reach us at [email protected]

A Time For Giving In an effort to balance the crazy getting and spend-

ing o the holiday season, philanthropic organizationsaround the world have countered with a special day thatemphasizes giving. Tat giving can be expressed in manydifferent ways and doesn’t need to be limited to just oneday during the year. In your community you can look orspecial occasions that benet local charities – a Christ-mas concert where the proceeds go to supporting a localgroup, a community dinner perhaps and in this particu-

lar year, the many opportunities to donate toward reu-gee relie.

Tat’s the monetary side o it. But just as important aregifs o time and talent that con-tribute to the welare o everyonein our community. We know oseveral music students who will belling the halls with their music inseniors’ homes and extended careunits this month. Our commun-ities are loaded with many volun-

teers who give generously o theirtime in many different ways.

Tis is also the time o year whenpeople with surplus unds are look-ing or ways to make tax deductibledonations. Community Founda-tions are deliberately set up to re-ceive charitable donations to buildpermanent endowment unds thatbenet communities in perpetuity.

As o 2014 every community in the Columbia Basin isserved by a Community Foundation.

Te Osprey Community Foundation in Nelson andits three affi liate unds – the Community Fund o NorthKootenay Lake, the Salmo Fund and the Slocan ValleyLegacy Fund – serve a large part o the West Kootenayswith over $6,000,000 in endowments. Te earned inter-est rom those endowments benet the many registeredcharities in their communities on an annual basis. Youcan nd out more about any o those unds by usingyour avourite search engine or you can be in touch withDavid Stewart at [email protected] or call 250-353-7600.

Submitted by David Stewart for the Osprey family of funds.

What is GIVING TUESDAY? Imagine a day dedicated to giving back…

around the world, across Canada and in your own community!

encourage you tomake a gift to your

    community this year.

Just as Black Friday kicks off the holiday shopping season,is the opening day of the giving season.

It’s the global day of giving, a time to celebrate and encourageactivities that support charities and non-prots.

Whether it’s making a donation, volunteering time, helpinga neighbour or spreading the word, isa movement for everyone who wants to give something back.
