HISTORY OF HACKING
The first bona fide appearance of a computer hacker occurs nearly 100 years later, in the
1960s. A “hack” has always been a kind of shortcut or modification a way to by pass or rework
the standard operation of an object or system. In fact, the most elegant and enduring hack from this
period is the UNIX operating system, developed in the late 1960s by “Dennis Ritchie” and “Keith
Thompson” of Bell Laboratory. The 1970s produced another type of hacker , one focused on
telephone systems known as “ phreakers ”, these hackers discovered and exploited operational
characteristics of the newly all electronic telephone switching network that enabled them to make
long distance calls free of charge. Modems, devices that enabled computers to communicate with
each other over telephone lines, were also more widely available and significantly extended the
hacker‟s reach.
Sniffing is the use of a network interface to receive data not intended for the machine in which the
interface resides. A variety of types of machines need to have this capability. A token-ring bridge, for
example, typically has two network interfaces that normally receive all packets traveling on the media on
one interface and retransmit some, but not all, of these packets on the other interface. Another example
of a device that incorporates sniffing is one typically marketed as a “network analyzer”. In the united
States, script kiddies are less serious crackers are thought to be between 12 and 30 years old. This
new breed of “hacker” directed its knowledge towards distinctly criminal pursuits including the
distribution of pirated, commercial software, games, computer viruses and worms that could virtually
shut down systems. The number of popular books and films at this time, beginning with 1983‟s movie,
War Games. Nowadays the hackers are growing all over the world be careful guys.

YOUR SMARTPHONE AS A 3D SCANNER
3D scanning aims to capture the geometry of the 3D world. However, most existing solutions
require a complicated setup, are often hard to use and might not always work outdoors.
Marc Pollefeys, professor at the Institute for Visual Computing and his group found a way to
develop a software that works with existing smartphone technology that allows the user to scan a
3D model almost as easy as taking a photograph. The technology was demonstrated publicly for
the first time today at the International Conference on Computer Vision in Sydney,Australia.
As all calculations are performed directly on the phone, the user gets immediate feedback and
can select additional viewpoints to cover missing parts of the 3D model. "This is an important
advantage compared to solutions that batch process all the images in the cloud at a later time",
explains Marc Pollefeys.
The app also makes it possible to visualise the state of the 3D scan from different viewing angles,
allowing the user to cover all the areas of the object he is interested in. Having a solution on a
mobile phone enables the acquisition of 3D scans on-the-fly anywhere. The approach works in a
wide variety of settings, including low-light conditi-ons such as inside a museum.
After the 3D capture is started, the system automatically determines the correct moments to
extract camera images based on the user motion. "Only two years ago, such a software only run
on massive computers. We were able to shrink processes down on smartphone level and make
them highly efficient", says Marc Pollefeys.
Contrary to image-only 3D capture solutions the app is able to determine the absolute size of the
scanned 3D object, as well as the vertical direction. Because of the complexity of the calculations
needed to reconstruct hundreds of thousands of points, the graphics co-processor (GPU) of the
phone is used to enable a faster reconstruction and increase interactivity for the user.
3
The technology also allows the 3D capture of faces, giving a third dimension to portraits, profile
pictures or images of loved ones. Having a convenient way of getting 3D models of everyday
objects, users will now be able to copy real-world objects by scanning a full 360 degree model of
an object. The resulting 3D model can be used for visualisation or augmented reality
applications, or even be used for 3D printing, potentially at a remote location, effectively
enabling the user to replicate an object.

APPLE GIVING AWAY IWORK FOR FREE WITH IOS DEVICES
The application is Apple's version of MS Office.
Apple‟s iWork application suite will come for free with all new iOS 7-based devices.
This would be welcome news for iPhone fans since this application is a useful one and costs $5 to $10 at
the moment. The announcement is in fact somewhat a surprise from the company.
Apple‟s iWork consists of Pages and Numbers, which is the iOS counterpart of Microsoft‟s MS
Word and MS Excel. Apple‟s iWork also includes the iMovie, Keynote and iPhoto applications. These
apps are amongst the most useful and popular applications on Apple as the cover almost all the basic
office needs that users can have. “With one touch, boom, all five of these apps are downloaded for you,
and some additional ones,” “We think that iWork is a really key advantage for a customer‟s productivity
and that iPhoto and iMovie are great for their creativity,”he added. The apps have all been made free for
all new iOS devices. This means that users, who are now buying iPads, iPhones and the fifth generation
models of the iPod Touch, will all get free access to these apps. It should generate a lot of interest
amongst the fans of the company to use these services more avidly.

DELL TO ADD CHROMEBOOK 11, LOOKS BEYOND WINDOWS AND
ANDROID
Dell joins growing market for thin-and-light Chrome OS laptops, but will initially ship
Chromebook 11 only to educational institutions Dell said it would join a growing market of thin-and-
light Chrome OS laptops with the new Chromebook 11, but the system will initially be available only to
educational institutions. The company did not provide specifications for the laptop, but in an email said
more Chromebooks will be announced for "budget-strapped" small-and-medium business and consumers
in the coming months. Dell did not provide a shipping date for the Chromebook 11.
PC makers and Google are promoting Chromebooks , which are low-cost laptops for those who
do most of their computing on the Web. Dell already offers Android tablets starting at $149, and laptops
and tablets based on Windows. A new wave of Chromebooks hit the market in October from Acer,
Hewlett-Packard and Samsung. Laptops with 11.6-inch screens include Acer's $199 Chromebook C720,
Hewlett-Packard and Google's $279 Chromebook 11, and the $249 Samsung Chromebook.
Hewlett-Packard also sells a $299 Chromebook 14 with a 14-inch screen. Acer's $299
Chromebook C720P, which started shipping a few days ago, has an 11.6-inch touchscreen. Chromebooks
have processor options of either ARM or Intel's Celeron, which is based on a Haswell microarchitecture.
Depending on the screen size and processor, Chromebooks can offer more than six hours of battery life.
Many Chromebooks have minimal storage of just 16GB, but come with two years of 100GB of free
cloud storage on Google Drive.

STEAMOS
Steam is coming to a new operating system
As we‟ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we‟ve come to the conclusion that
then environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam
itself. SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big
screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.
Fast forward
In SteamOS, we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and
we‟re now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level.
Game developers are already taking advantage of these gains as they target SteamOS for their new
releases.
Cooperating system
Steam is not a one-way content broadcast channel, it‟s a collaborative many-to-many
entertainment platform, in which each participant is a multiplier of the experience for everyone else.
With SteamOS, “openness” means that the hardware industry can iterate in the living room at a much
faster pace than they‟ve been able to. Content creators can connect directly to their customers. Users can
alter or replace any part of the software or hardware they want. Ga mers are empowered to join in the
creation of the games they love.
In-home Streaming
You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too. Just turn on
your existing computer and run Steam as you always have - then your SteamOS machine can stream
those games over your home network straight to your TV!
Worldwide
Steam is in 185 countries and has been translated into 25 languages. Truly global platform, Steam
and now SteamOS, brings entertainment to an audience without borders.

GUARDIAN
Tech major Microsoft on Thursday launched „Guardian,‟ a new safety application (app), that
enables friends and family of Windows Phone users to track them in real time. Available exclusively for
Windows Phone users, Guardian‟s „track me‟ feature allows friends and family to track them using
Microsoft Windows Azure cloud services and Bing Map APIs, a statement issued by Microsoft here said.
Microsoft Launches New Safety Application
“Guardian users can call for help through an „SOS‟ alert button and also connect to security
agencies, police and hospitals easily via this app in times of distress,” the statement said. Guardian was
developed over six months by a group of enthusiastic Microsoft employees in India, within the Microsoft
Garage, a global employee innovation initiative that g ives the employees an outlet to explore ideas. “Our
employees wanted to do something to enable people to feel safer in our cities. So they used their spare
time to develop Guardian,” Managing Director of Microsoft IT India Raj Biyani said in a statement.
Guardian is a robust personal security app with more safety features and capabilities than any other
comparable app available to Indian smartphone users today, he claimed.
To use Guardian effectively, users need to add the names of friends, family members and security
groups to the settings. In an emergency situation, the app can be used to alert them, via the SOS button.
All the user has to do is tap the SOS button. The phone then sends a distress SMS to all buddy mobiles,
notifying them of the emergency along with location details, Microsoft said. “At the same time, the SOS
button also sends emails to buddy email IDs and posts to private Facebook groups, if registered.”
Pointing out that Guardian uses Microsoft Windows Azure cloud services and Bing Map APIs
extensively and can help the authorities and medical teams track the user, the statement said the phone
can be traced even if it is broken.

NEXT GENERATION COMPILER OF MICRO SOFT
Microsoft execs also showed off without using the codename a new technology in development
for compiling directly .Net code to native code. That technology, from what I've heard from my sources,
is codenamed "Project N."
Microsoft Project Manager Orville McDonald showed a quick demonstration during the Visual
Studio launch of two different versions of Microsoft's FreshPaint app running on Microsoft Surface
tablets. One of the versions made use of unspecified optimization technology that caused the application
launch and run more quickly than the version without. McDonald said the faster version used an
experimental technology in development at Microsoft that involved the ability to compile .Net code to
native code directly.
We don't do JIT (just-in-time compile) and use optimization that we use for C++ code,"
McDonald told the audience. He said at some point in the future, Microsoft planned to make this
technology available to the wider development community. I've gotten a few tips in recent months about
"Project N," which, according to my contacts, is designed to make applications developed in .Net/C#
work better on Windows 8 and Windows RT via new compiler technology under development at the
company. My tipsters have said Microsoft is planning to go public with its Project N plans in 2014.
It's not clear exactly how this new compilation technology will manifest. It could be something
that Microsoft uses internally on the back-end, Microsoft to compile apps submitted by Windows
developers before they are made available in the Windows Store.Microsoft already has done work
around improving compilation of Windows Phone apps involving Machine Dependent Intermediate
Language (MDIL).

CHROMEBOOKS' SUCCESS PUNCHES MICROSOFT IN THE GUT
Chromebooks had a very good year, according to retailer Amazon.com and industry analysts
and that's bad news for Microsoft.
The pared-down laptops powered by Google's browser-based Chrome OS have surfaced this
year as a threat to "Wintel," the Microsoft-Intel oligarchy that has dominated the personal-
computer space for decades with Windows machines.
As of late Thursday, the trio retained their lock on the top three places on Amazon's best-
selling-laptop list in the order of Acer, Samsung and Asus. Another Acer Chromebook, one
that sports 32GB of on-board storage space -- double the 16GB of Acer's lower-priced
model -- held the No. 7 spot on the retailer's top 10.
Chromebooks' holiday success at Amazon was duplicated elsewhere during the year,
according to the NPD Group, which tracked U.S. PC sales to commercial buyers such as
businesses, schools, government and other organizations.
NPD's tallies, Chromebooks accounted for 21% of all U.S. commercial notebook sales in
2013 through November, and 10% of all computers and tablets. Both shares were up
massively from 2012; last year, Chromebooks accounted for an almost-invisible two-tenths
of one percent of all computer and tablet sales.
Stephen Baker of NPD pointed out what others had said previously: Chromebooks have
capitalized on Microsoft's stumble with Windows 8. "Tepid Windows PC sales allowed
brands with a focus on alternative form factors or operating systems, like Apple and
Samsung, to capture significant share of a market traditionally dominated by Windows
devices," Baker said in a Monday statement.

CAKEWALK SONAR X3
Cakewalk SONAR X3 ($149.99 list) may be the least expensive version of SONAR available, but it's no
cut-rate digital audio workstation software. In doing this review, it would be easy to look at all the things
taken out from the higher-end Studio and Producer versions of SONAR X3, and list them all as cons for
this product.
SETUP RECORDING AND INTERFACE:
For this review, I tested SONAR X3c on a Core i5-powered Lenovo ThinkPad running 64-bit Windows
7. As with the Producer and Studio versions, there's no copy protection the way there is with Pro Tools
and Cubase, which is a huge relief when using an ultrabook or other laptop with few USB ports
The modular Skylight user interface is a gem, and one of the best things about the entire SONAR lineup.
It manages to stay reasonably uncluttered and attractive, while simultaneously letting you do everything
you need to do arranging, and mixing, depending on how you lay out the windows.
EDITING TOOLS:
As before, the Control Bar at the top contains oversized track control buttons and easy access to the
metronome, recording resolution, tempo, and meter. You can expand t he control bar to add sections for
loop recording, editing, and other features; and you can set the bar to float as well as stay affixed to the
top.
One of the new signature features in SONAR X3 is the comping tool, which lets you assemble the
perfect track from a series of take lanes. Each time you record, it creates a new lane. A special mode lets
you quick comp without the mouse; just hit shift and the space bar and you can toggle between the
various tracks using the arrow keys.

CHINA OPERATING SYSTEM FOR SMARTPHONE
IT BULLETIN DATE: 24-01-2014
China, wary of operating systems from the Western world, has built a new smartphone OS that it
believes will be more secure than the likes of Android and the iPhone. While China claims it as its
own, the OS looks like it's based on Android.
China Operating System, or COS, was unveiled last week by the Chinese Academy of Sciences
and the Shanghai-based Liantong Network Communications Technology, the New York Times
reported. COS is "designed for use on many devices including smartphones and personal
computers" and was called "a strategic product for national security," the Times said. US
surveillance and the end of support for Windows XP reportedly played a role in the system's
creation. Liantong Deputy GM Chen Feili said the ultimate goal is to make COS China's main
operating system.
While Windows is the predominant desktop OS in China, Android commands about 90 percent of
China's smartphone market, with iOS taking most of the rest, IDC reports.
Despite that, Chinese officials say it was developed "completely" by China. An article published
by the Chinese Academy of Sciences "said existing open-source operating systems pose security
risks, and foreign-made systems have 'acclimatization' difficulties in China, problems that COS
addresses," the Times wrote.
COS reportedly runs Java applications, supports HTML5 websites and games, and is compatible
with more than 100,000 applications overall.
China's claims about COS' origins raised suspicion, the Times reported:
Separately, the Chinese government signed a deal with Canonical last year to create a new version
of the open source Ubuntu for Chinese users that is intended to wean people off of Windows
desktops. At the time, Canonical said that "future work will extend beyond the desktop to other
platforms" such as servers, tablets, and phones. A recent financial report from Canonical said that
China accounts for the "majority of global units shipped" by the company.

POWER TO THE PORTABLE: 3 HIGH-PERFORMANCE MOBILE
WORKSTATIONS
Computerworld - Sales of PCs have fallen by 11% since 2012, according to statistics compiled
by Gartner analysts. However, there is one niche market that is still doing well: mobile workstations.
This category has seen an upsurge with increasing sales."It's been doom and gloom for PCs for several
years," observes Lloyd Cohen, director of market analysis at IDC. "But it's been anything but declines for
mobile workstations. It's the bright spot of the computer business, with sales growth of 5% a year and
lots of new systems available."They can be used for a var iety of graphics-heavy applications: geological
simulation software that peers 3,000 feet under an oil drilling rig; architectural software that virtually
moves a wall on a floor plan at a construction site; or special effects software used to alter a sequence on
a film set.
From the outside, a mobile workstation looks like any other lalptop. But "look inside," says
Cohen, "and you see that these are machines that excel at graphics and computation. They have the best
of everything." This can include a Core i7 processor, 16GB or more of system memory, the latest
graphics chips and at least 2GB of dedicated video RAM.Because they define the top shelf of the PC
business, mobile workstations can cost five times or more than a typical mainstream laptop. They are
also a throwback to a heavier and bulkier era of mobility. Mobile workstations can barely fit onto an
airline's economy class tray table and can weigh double that of a consumer laptop.
Eurocom Racer 3W:
Aiming for ultimate performance, Eurocom's Racer 3W spares no expense, leading to a mobile
workstation that can plow through the most complex graphic tasks The Eurocom Racer 3W includes the
most powerful mobile processor that Intel currently makes. The quad-core Core i7-4930MX cruises
along at 3.0GHz -- 300MHz faster than the HP or Toshiba systems -- and can punch up to 3.9GHz when
needed.
17
HP ZBook 15:
According to HP, the company is the leader in mobile workstations, with 42.5% of sales for the
second quarter of 2013. That may be because it offers laptops such as the ZBook 15, which is powerful
and well designed, and offers extras such as a Thunderbolt high-speed port for external drives.
Toshiba Tecra W50:
Although Toshiba is a newcomer to the mobile workstation market, its Tecra W50 can teach the
established players a thing or two about delivering a thin and light system on a tight budget (the base unit
starts at $1,899; the review unit costs $1,999). Unfortunately, it lacks the configuration options that the
others have.

WINDOWS 8 MARKET SHARE SURPASSES ALL VERSIONS OF OS X

The growth Windows 8 experienced in August was the largest month-on-month gain since its

could perhaps be related to the price cuts of Microsoft's Surface RT and Surface pro tablets, or the leaks
of the Windows 8.1 RTM, or simply a large amount of mid-year system purchases.
Market Share July 2013 Market Share Market Share Gain
Windows 8 7.41% 5.40% 2.01%
Windows 7 45.63% 44.46% 1.14%
Windows XP 33.66% 37.19% -3.53%
Windows Other 0.38% 0.27% 0.11%
Windows 7 also saw a gain of 1.14% in August, while Windows Vista and Windows XP declined by
0.13 and 3.53 percent respectively. Overall, Windows saw a fractional decline of 0.37% in the month.
Despite gains for Windows 8 in August, it seems Microsoft hasn't been able to convince a large number
of Windows 7 users to upgrade. The launch of Windows 8.1 later this year, which addresses a number
complaints surrounding Windows 8, may prompt more users to upgrade their OS, but at least for now it
seems Windows 7 and Windows XP will remain kings of the market.

NOKIA LUMIA 620
The Nokia Lumia 620 is a Smartphone designed, developed and marketed by Nokia. It is the
successor to the Lumia 610, and is one of the first Nokia phones to implement Windows Phone 8
alongside the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820. Although sharing a similar name with the Lumia
610, the Lumia 620 is a major overhaul over its predecessor, employing a 1.0 GHz dual-core processor.
It was announced in December 2012 and started selling in January 2013 in Asia, followed by Europe and
the Middle East at an estimated street price of USD 249. In the United States, the Nokia Lumia 620 is
available for AT&T's subsidiary brand Aio Wireless.
Like other Lumia devices with Windows Phone 8, Nokia adds these applications: HERE Drive+,
HERE Maps, HERE City Lens, Nokia Mix Radio(select markets), Smartshoot, NokiaCinemagraph. On
July 23, 2013, a variant of the Nokia Lumia 620, the Nokia Lumia 625, was released with a bigger
display and 4G support. Along with Lumia 810 and 928, this model will not get the FM Radio support
upon updating to Windows Phone "Amber". Reasons range from the model not having the FM radio chip
to the design of the casing(and earphone plug) not supporting the connection for the antenna required.

MICROSOFT SURFACE
The Surface debuted in two models, marketed as Surface RT and Surface Pro. Surface RT uses
an ARM (ARMv7) CPU running Windows RT whereas Surface Pro utilizes an Intel Ivy Bridge CPU
running Windows 8. The Surface devices use a molded magnesium casing known as "VaporMg"
(pronounced "VaporMag") that houses Surface's components paired with a PVD finish.A built-in
kickstand allows the device to be propped up for viewing without any additional hardware. For ports,
Surface RT features a full-size USB 2.0 port, an HD video out port, and a microSDXC card slot; Surface
Pro includes a full-size USB 3.0 port, Mini DisplayPort port, and microSDXC card slot. Both models
have two 720p HD front- and rear-facing cameras, and a 0.77 millimetres (0.030 in)-thick kickstand
which allows the device to be stood up at an angle for hands-free viewing.
Display
Surface RT and Surface Pro have screens of 10.6 inches (27 cm) with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Both
tablets use Microsoft's ClearType HD display technology and support an ultra-wide viewing angle and
auto-adjusting screen intensity. In announcement talk, Michael Angiulo said that when Surface Pro is
held at 17 inches (43 cm), the eyes will not be able to distinguish between individual pixels. Both screens
feature Gorilla Glass, scratch and crack-resistant glass. The display functions as a multi-touch input
device. While Surface RT includes 5-point capacitive touch, Surface Pro includes 10-points of touch
detection. In addition, Surface Pro includes a digital pen and Wacom digitizing technology. This allows
the pen to be contacted with up to 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity. To achieve highly precise pen
inputs, the display produces a weak electromagnetic

UBUNTU OS
Ubuntu is a Debian-based Linux operating system, with Unity as its default desktop environment
(formerly GNOME). It is based on free software and named after the Southern African philosophy of
ubuntu (literally, "human-ness"), which often is translated as "humanity towards others" or "the belief in
a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity".
Features:
Ubuntu is composed of many software packages, the majority of which are free software. Free
software gives users the freedom to study, adapt/modify, and distribute it. Ubuntu can also run
proprietary software. Ubuntu comes installed with a wide range of software that includes LibreOffice,
Firefox, Empathy, Transmission, and several lightweight games (such as Sudoku and chess). Additional
software that is not installed by default (including software that used to be in the default installation such
as Evolution, GIMP, Pidgin, and Synaptic) can be downloaded and installed using the Ubuntu Software
Center or other APT-based package management tools. Programs in the Software Center are mostly free,
but there are also priced products, including applications and magazines. Ubuntu can also run many
programs designed for Microsoft Windows (such as Microsoft Office), through Wine or using a Virtual
Machine (such as VirtualBox or VMware Workstation). Ubuntu Desktop includes Unity, a graphical
desktop environment.
History and development process
Ubuntu is built on Debian's architecture and infrastructure, to provide Linux server, desktop,
phone, tablet and TV operating systems. Ubuntu releases updated versions predictably - every six months
- and that each release would receive free support for nine months (eighteen months prior to 13.04) with
security fixes, other high-impact bug fixes and very conservative, substantially beneficial low-risk bug
fixes.
22
Ubuntu Server:
A screenshot of the Ubuntu 12.04 Server installation boot menu.Ubuntu has a server edition that
uses the same APT repositories as the Ubuntu Desktop Edition. The differences between them are the
absence of an X Window environment in a default installation of the server edition (although one can
easily be installed including Unity, GNOME, KDE or XFCE) and the installation process. The server
edition uses a screen mode character-based interface for the installation, instead of a graphical
installation process.

ANDROID KITKAT
Android 4.4 is designed to run fast, smooth, and responsively on a much broader range of
devices than ever before — including on millions of entry-level devices around the world
that have as little as 512MB RAM.
KitKat stream lines every major component to reduce memory use and introduces new
APIs and tools to help you create innovative, responsive, memory-efficient applications.
OEMs building the next generation of Android devices can take advantage of targeted
recommendations and options to run Android 4.4 efficiently, even on low-memory devices.
Dalvik JIT code cache tuning, kernel same page merging (KSM), swap to z RAM, and
other optimizations help manage memory. New configuration options let OEMs tune out-
of-memory levels for processes, set graphics cache sizes, control memory reclaim, and more
In Android itself, changes across the system improve memory management and reduce
memory footprint. Core system processes are trimmed to use less heap, and they now
more aggressively protect system memory from apps consuming large amounts of RAM.
For developers, Android 4.4 helps you deliver apps that are efficient and responsive on all
devices. A new API, Activity Manager is Low Ram Device(), lets you tune your app's
behavior to match the device's memory configuration.
24
You can modify or disable large -memory features as needed, depending on the use -cases
you want to support on entry-level devices.
New tools give also give you powerful insight into your app's memory use. The procstats
tool details memory use over time, with run times and memory footprint for foreground
apps and background services. The meminfo tool is enhanced to make it easier to spot
memory trends and issues, and it reveals additional memory overhead that hasn't
previously been visible.
