HARBINGERRace analysis An impressivethree-length win in thiscontest, formerly run as theJohn Porter Stakes, markeddown Harbinger as amiddle-distance performer ofconsiderable promise.

The four-year-old looks thesort of late-blooming startypical of his trainer, SirMichael Stoute, in the mouldof recent Group 1 winners Askand Mountain High. In fact, that pair, as well as Harbinger, made their debuts in theWood Ditton Stakes, finishingplaced and then winning theirmaiden on one of their nexttwo starts.

Harbinger won his maidenat Chester, by three lengthsfrom the usefulChangingoftheguard, in suchimpressive fashion that he wastalked of as a serious Derbycontender. His Epsom Classiccredentials went untested ashe was ruled out due to amuscle tear in his quarters, buthis subsequent commandingdefeat of the admirably toughFirebet in the Gordon Stakes atGlorious Goodwood suggested

that, had he been at peakfitness, he would haveperformed creditably atEpsom.

Next came the GreatVoltigeur Stakes andHarbinger’s sole disappointingeffort, when tailed off behindMonitor Closely and Mastery, who would go on to finishthird and first in the St Leger. He atoned for that run slightlyon his final start at three, inthe St Simon Stakes, when, sporting a cross-noseband andtongue-tie and taking on hiselders for the first time, hefinished third to High Heeled.

The Ormonde Stakes atChester could be Harbinger’snext port of call, and he holdsearly entries for the Jockey

Club Stakes, Coronation Cupand Irish St Leger.Pedigree Juddmonte stallionDansili has enjoyed a purplepatch in the past week. As wellas Harbinger, he wasrepresented by three Listedwinners – Foreteller in the Prixde Suresnes, Famous Name inthe Heritage Stakes andAbaton in the Premio Nataledi Roma – as well as anexciting two-year-old debutwinner from his seventh cropin Leopardstown maidenscorer Zoffany, and animpressive three-year-old debutwinner at Pontefract in BatedBreath.

Dansili has sired fiveindividual Group/Grade 1winners – an admirable featbut still not quite reflective of

PUNCHER CLYNCHRace analysis It is doubtfulthat this year’s Ballysax Stakeswill prove as informative forGroup 1 races as previousrenewals, which have beenwon in the new millennium byluminaries such as Galileo,High Chaparral and Fame AndGlory.

It is hard to believe thatBallydoyle’s two entrants,Criterium de Saint-Cloudrunner-up Mikhail Glinka andmaiden winner At First Sight, are Aidan O’Brien’s principalDerby hopes, like the famousthree mentioned above wereat this stage of the season.Ballydoyle’s obvious Derbycontenders head to Guineasraces first this year– St Nicholas Abbey toNewmarket and Jan Vermeerto the Curragh or Longchamp.

To add further confusion, the race was run messily, withAt First Sight and PuncherClynch setting a slowish paceand dominating the finish, with just a short headseparating the pair on theline. Mikhail Glinka, havingseemed to get outpacedturning for home, found asecond wind to run on intothird, with hapless AddressUnknown, a last-time-outmaiden winner, travelling

strongly but failing to findspace and finishing fifth. Onlya length and a half covered thefirst five home.

Puncher Clynch seems tohave found improvementfrom last year. He won two ofhis five races, including anursery in which he beatsubsequent Royal LodgeStakes winner Joshua Tree(receiving a stone), and on hislast run at two was beaten outof sight in a nursery off amark of 91.

Trainer’s wife Jackie Bolgerwas realistic after the race, saying: “He isn’t ready yet tocope with real Group 1 horsesbut he’ll be fine at a level a bitbelow that.”Pedigree Puncher Clynch’sBallysax victory gave his sireAzamour a first Pattern-racewinner. Four-time Group 1winner Azamour, who standsat his owner-breeder theAga Khan’s Gilltown Stud inCounty Kildare, made a fairstart with his firsttwo-year-olds last year, ListedUsk Valley Stud Stakes winnerAzmeel being his mostpromising representative.

It is difficult to speculate onwhat distances the Azamourswill thrive over, if onlybecause the stallion’s own sireNight Shift’s stud record wasslightly spasmodic in thatdepartment. Mostly an

influence for speed, his twobest runners excelled overmiddle distances. To furthermuddy the waters, anotherNight Shift stallion, DyhimDiamond, was a 6f specialiston the track whose three bestprogeny have excelled insprints (Milanais), over 1m(Turtle Bowl) and overextreme distances (Bannaby).

Puncher Clynch’sstamina-laden maternalfamily suggests he willimprove the further he goes.Bred by Ennistown Stud,Puncher Clynch is the firstfoal out of the Rainbow Questmare Dance Troupe, aJuddmonte-bred serialplace-getter in France. She isa half-sister to smartdual-purpose performer SelfDefense and to the dams ofSt Leger runner-up The LastDrop and middle-distanceListed winners Degas Art andPersefona.

Dance Troupe is out of anunraced daughter of Irish1,000 Guineas and YorkshireOaks winner Sarah Siddons, dam of Irish Oaks winnerPrincess Pati and ancestressof Prix Vermeille winner andArc runner-up Leggera andher smart middle-distancehalf-brother Lucido.

Puncher Clynch was offeredat the 2008 Goffs Million saleand was registered as sold toJim Bolger – who trained theEnnistown Stud-ownedSaoirse Abu to Group 1 glory– for €32,000.

Dance Troupe has atwo-year-old filly by HurricaneRun (there should be noquestion of whether that onewill stay), a yearling filly byTeofilo, and was covered byTeofilo last year.Martin Stevens

the consistency with which hehas come up with high-classrunners. He has, for instance, also sired five individualGroup 1 runners-up.

With 17 six-figure yearlingsales last year, few wouldbegrudge Dansili a 2010 studfee of £65,000, which is a farcry from his introductoryprice of £8,000. And forbreeders whose price range hehas ascended out of, theycould take a punt on hisGrade 1-winning brotherChamps Elysees, who took upstud duties at Banstead ManorStud this year at £10,000.

The cross of Dansili overHarbinger’s damsire Bering hasalso produced Poule d’Essaides Poulains fifth and Group 2runner-up Handsome Maestro. It is the next generation of anick that scored when Dansili’ssire Danehill sired high-classjuvenile Russian Blue whenbred to a Bering mare.

Harbinger’s dam, PenangPearl, carried the colours ofhis breeder Ann Ooi tovictory in the Listed OctoberStakes. Harbinger is her fifthfoal and by far her best(by 41lb on Racing Post

Ratings, to be precise).Penang Cinta, the dam’s nextbest, never won above Class 5handicap level, but did at leastshow qualities of toughnessand soundness, winning eighttimes between the ages ofthree and six.

French-bred Penang Pearl isa granddaughter of Falmouth(then the Child) Stakes andStrensall Stakes winnerSauceboat, herself a daughterof Sun Chariot Stakes heroineCranberry Sauce. Sauceboatproved herself an ablebroodmare by producingPrince of Wales’s Stakes winnerKind Of Hush and Sun ChariotStakes winner Dusty Dollar, herself granddam of usefulJapanese two-year-old MissHirondelle.

Harbinger was purchased byJohn Warren for ownersHighclere for 180,000gns atBook 1 of the TattersallsOctober yearling sale in 2007,out of the consignment ofKirtlington Stud. OVERTURNRace analysis Overturn’srapid ascent through thehurdling ranks was crowned byan all-the-way success in theScottish Champion Hurdle, carrying 10st 7lb to beat smarthandicapper Gloucester(receiving 1lb), with 2005Supreme Novices’ Hurdlewinner Arcalis (giving 8lb) inthird.

The Donald McCain-trainedsix-year-old winner hasimproved markedly this year.In January, he was beaten intothird in a 0-100 Class 4 novicehandicap hurdle (carrying topweight) and he finishedrunner-up in a 0-105 novicehandicap hurdle last month. On his next start, heembarked on a love affair withAyr, making all to win a 2mnovice handicap hurdleunchallenged, and repeatedthe trick over the same courseand distance in similarfashion in a novice hurdle onhis last start before thisweekend.

Overturn was formerly asmart juvenile and later won a1m6f handicap off a mark of88 when trained by WalterSwinburn – whose father-in-lawPeter Harris’s Pendley Farmbred the gelding. He was thethird-highest priced lot at lastyear’s DBS October sales, when bought by McCain for£75,000.

Overturn has evidentlybenefited from a windoperation carried out thisseason and the better groundin the spring. He could makehis next start in the SwintonHandicap Hurdle at Haydock, and if the going is good orfirmer he would be a difficulthorse to peg back.

Pedigree Proof that Sadler’sWells is not only a dominantinfluence in Flat racing wasthere for all to see at theCheltenham Festival, wherethe Coolmore colossus wasgrandsire or great-grandsire ofseven of the meeting’s Grade 1winners.

The late Sadler’s Wellsstallion Barathea has sired twoGrade 1 winners atCheltenham in past years withcast-offs from the Flat– Triumph Hurdle winnerMade In Japan and FredWinter Juvenile Novices’Hurdle scorer Silk Hall(both, incidentally, out ofDarshaan mares).

By flourishing after a switchof codes, Overturn is not onlyfollowing the example ofthose paternal half-brothers,but also that of his maternalhalf-brother Fisher Bridge, who was rated 78 on the Flatand later Grade 3-paced inchases.

The pair are out of the Krismare Kristal Bridge, who wasbred and trained by PeterHarris and put up her besteffort when third in a lowlymaiden handicap.

That Kristal Bridge did not

win would not have galledHarris too much, as the familyowes him nothing. He owned

her dam, Connaught Bridge,a cheap purchase trained byHenry Cecil to win theYorkshire Oaks, and from

Connaught Bridge bredDorothea Brooke, a winner andlater dam of Middle ParkStakes winner Primo Valentino,as well as Lydia Maria, dam ofuseful performers Barolo andPropinquity.

Kristal Bridge’s last foalregistered with Weatherbys isthree-year-old filly Kristalette,by another Pendley Farmhomebred, Leproello. She wascovered by Beat Hollow, another son of Sadler’s Wells, last year.George Kimberley

QUICK QUESTIONSEamonn CullenMarketing manager,Bloodstock South Africa

What attracted you toworking in South Africa? Ihad come to the country onnumerous occasions and wasimpressed by the standard ofracing and type of horses thebreeders produce. I’ve beenfriends with Mike de Kock andbloodstock agent JehanMalherbe for many years. Iwas approached by JohnKoster of Klawervlei Stud andMary and Jessica Slack ofWilgerbosdrift Stud aboutmoving here. The support I’vereceived from people in theindustry has been amazing.

What are your hopes orexpectations for theup-coming EmperorsPalace National YearlingSale? It is impossible topredict what way a sale isgoing to go as there are somany outside factors that wehave no control over . . . I didnot comprehend that a volcanoin Iceland could affect a sale inSouth Africa as a number ofEuropean buyers have beenprevented from attending.

What are the advantagesand disadvantages ofSouth African racing? Thequality and the facilities at theracetracks and the trainingcentres for the horses areworld class. The value inhaving a horse in training andthe cost of getting involvedshould attract more overseasbuyers and the prize-money isgood. On the other hand, theworld does not know what agreat country this is to ownracehorses, the standard ishigh but there is amazingvalue here. We see whathappens every year in Dubai, that a small string of SouthAfrican horses can perform onthe world stage.

Jolly Snake shows some biteBy Cathal Beale

IT TOOK just six weeks forJolly Snake to repay a huge chunkof the €20,000 his trainer Ger-ard O’Leary paid for him at theGoffs Kempton Breeze-Up whenwinning at Dundalk last Friday. The victory landed O’Leary, whoalso owns Jolly Snake, a £10,000Racing Post Yearling Bonus anda £5,000 windfall from the breeze-up equivalent.

O’Leary said: “Me and my headman, Cooper Donnelly went overto Kempton having picked out20 or 30 horses from the catalogue. We actually had not planned onlooking at Jolly Snake but saw him

walking by usand he reallys t o o d o u tf r o m t h e

that and decided to buy him. Theconsignor, Eddie O’Leary of LynnLodge Stud, told me the horsewas very straight forward andcould win a bonus – how right hewas.”

With a string of ten horses onthe Curragh the win was a wel-come fillip for the whole teamat Dunmurray Hall. “The winwas fantastic for all the lads in theyard.,” O’Leary said. “My fathertrained here before me and the

likes of Cooper and Richard Don-nelly have been here since thosedays. They are great horse-menand put so much time and effortin to getting the horses right, soI was really delighted for them.

“Both bonus schemes are a

credit to the proactive peoplewho have made it happen. It’sgreat for the small man to beable to pick out a horse and haveit pay for itself within a few weeks. These incentives allow smallerguys to compete.”

Next on the agenda for JollySnake is the Marble Hill Stakesat the Curragh on Irish Guineasweekend. “It would be great ifhe could run into the places and

THE PARTNERSHIP between JimBolger and Ennistown Stud hasbeen consistently successful sincepurchasing Group 2 DebutanteStakes winner Gaudeamus in2006, writes Cathal Beale.

The following season SaoirseAbu landed the Group 1 PhoenixStakes against the colts beforewinning the Group 1 MoyglareStud Stakes and finishing third inthe 2008 1,000 Guineas. Lastyear Free Judgement won theG3 JRA Killavullan Stakes.

This year the partnership hasalready landed a blow with Punch-er Clynch’s battling performancein the Group 3 PW McGrathMemorial Ballysax Stakes at Leop-ardstown last Sunday.

The colt, named after a robustMeath footballer, seems to haveacquired his namesake’s battlingqualities, according to Ennis-town’s Ruairi O Coileain. “Seamus

Clynch played midfield for Meathminors in the All-Ireland final in1957 and was, and is, a greatbattler, so the horse is well named.”

“Puncher Clynch is a very toughcolt and has proven to be versa-tile regarding going and trip.Great credit goes to Jim Bolger andhis staff for pitching him in tothis company after a tough raceat Dundalk a week earlier.

“The whole team at Coolcullenare second to none. People like GerFlynn, Brian O’Connor, AdrianTaylor and Gordon Power amongstothers are top class horsemenand under the ever vigilant eyeof Jim Bolger they just keep pro-ducing incredible results.”

O Coileain is also keen to stressthe value of his own staff at Ennis-town, from where Puncher Clynchwas bred. “Christopher Markesruns the farm for us and he doesa fantastic job along with my

Next up for Puncher Clynchwill be a well earned rest. “He hascome out of the race well andeaten up but after two brilliantrides by Kevin Manning in quicksuccession he will have an easytime of it for a couple of weeksbefore a campaign is plotted forthe rest of the season. The tricknow is to try and repeat theprocess!” O Coileain said.

The runner-up is amember of Shamardal’s firstsouthern hemisphere crop.

Following two second-placedefforts at the top level – in theChipping Norton Stakes atWarwick Farm and the RanvetStakes at Rosehill –Rangirangdoo landed theEmirates Doncaster Mile.

His sire Pentire was a topmiddle-distance performer in1995/96. Having run unbeatenDerby winner Lammtarra to aneck in the King George atthree, he won the IrishChampion Stakes that year andtook the King George thefollowing year.

The son of Be My Guest hasnever stood in Britain orIreland, but was available toEuropean breeders whenstanding in Germany at Gestut

Once Were Wild tames her Oaks rivalsIsarland for a moderate fee.

USAAt Santa Anita, only fourrunners lined up for the filliesand mares’ Grade 2 SantaBarbara Handicap, and therewas no surprise when odds-onfavourite Tuscan Eveninglanded the spoils. The OasisDream five-year-old was bredby Hascombe and ValiantStuds, and placed in Group 2company when trained by
