Dr. Vartak’s Coliseum

About Bajirao

ajirao Ballal was born as the first

son of Balaji Vishwanath Bhat, a

Chitpawan Konkanstha Brahmin

Peshwa. History indicates that he was born

in the region around Pune-Satara, probably

at Saswad. Historical data indicates that he

was born at daybreak on the full moon day

of Bhadrapada month (of Hindu Lunar

calendar) of Shaka 1622. Which turns out

to be 18th August 1700.

Exact time of birth is required to cast a

birth chart. However, history only states

that he was born at daybreak on the full

moon day of Bhadrapada lunar month.

Accordingly this horoscope was created;

but it tallies a great deal with the life of

Bajirao.

With this basic information, let us attempt

to create the horoscope by calculating the

planetary positions. It is the Tercentenary

year of his birth. Hence, I have endeavored to

prepare this horoscope on this occasion.

Planetary Positions

he planetary positions on 18 August 2000, at sunrise is as follows - Rashi, Degrees,

Minutes and Seconds are given in sequence.

Sun 4-1-29-36, Moon 11-3-7-32, Mars 3-17, Mercury 3-40, Jupiter 1-14-32,Venus 4-19,

Saturn 1-6-32, Rahu 3-0- 24, Ketu 9-0-24, Uranus 9-24, Neptune 9-10, Pluto 7-16

According to the modern astronomy, every 72 years, the Sun recedes one degree due to the

precession of equinoxes. Over the period of 300 years, the Sun has receded by 4.16 degrees.

Sun‟s position as on 18/08/2000 is 121.5 degrees. Adding 4.16 it is 125.66 degrees, which is the

position of Sun at the time of Bajirao‟s birth. It is a full moon day. The angular separation

between the Sun and the Moon on a full moon day is 180 degrees. Thus moon‟s position was

305 degrees. Mars takes 1.88089 years to complete one rotation. Thus 300 years ago, Mars was

at 287.37 degrees or in Capricorn at 17 degrees. Jupiter completes one rotation in 11.863013

years. Hence 300 years ago Jupiter was on 300.573 degrees. Saturn takes 29.4544832 years to

complete one rotation; hence Saturn was on 329.82 degrees. Rahu takes 18.5992 years to

complete one rotation; hence Rahu was on 136.7 degrees. Sage Vyasa has named Uranus as

‘Shweta’ (for more information please read my book „Swayambhu‟). Hence I am using the name

‘Shweta’ for ‘Hershel’ or ‘Uranus’. Shweta completes one rotation in 84.01 years. Hence on

18/08/1700, it was 88.4 degrees. Sage Vyasa named Neptune as ‘Shyam’ in the Mahabharata.

„Shyam‟ takes 164.78 years for one rotation. Thus the planet was on 344.58 degrees. Vyasa has

named Pluto as ‘Tivra’. Pluto takes 248 years for one rotation. Hence, Pluto was on 150.5

degrees.

Based on the above calculations, Bajirao‟s natal or birth chart is as below-

T

Page 3: KN RAO BOOK 17

Since he was born at sunrise on 18/08/1700, the ascendant is Leo, Mars is exalted. Saturn,

Sun are in their own sign. Mercury too is in its own sign, further it is exalted. In the

astrological scripture ‘Sulabh Jataka’ the following shloka appears.-

“Tribhihi Uchham Atairbhupah Tribhih Mantri Swarashigaih I

Tribhih Astagataiah Dasah Tribhih Nichgataih Jadaha II”

The above verse means, if three planets are exalted, he becomes a king, if three planets are in

their own signs, he becomes a minister. If three planets are faded he becomes a slave,

servant. If three are lowest he becomes mad.

In this chart the three planets, Saturn, Sun and Mercury are in their own sign, in Bajirao‟s

natal chart, hence he became a minister. Since Mars and Mercury are exalted he became the

Prime-Minister. If three planets were exalted, he would have been a king, like king Shivaji.

Though, he did not have that fortune, the two exalted planets made him behave like a king.

First House

Let us consider his birth chart now. The Sun is in the first house or the ascendant. Venus,

too, is in the first house; hence he was bright, gallant and handsome. Venus gave him an

attractive face. Jupiter and Moon aspect the ascendant from the seventh house; hence there

was purity in his beauty. Since Saturn is in Aquarius and aspects the ascendant, Bajirao was

tall, agile and slim. He used to ride his horse with a great speed.

Venus placed in the first house granted him the appreciations for fine arts like music. Thus,

he was in love with Mastani an artist herself.

Second House

Exalted Mercury placed in the second house made him rich. It also made him a practical,

alert, a successful and determined diplomat. His speech was sweet, effective, and logical.

Hence, the first speech he delivered when he became Peshwa was very effective. Even later

he impressed others through his oratory and communication skill. He was attached to his

family.

Third House

Since Jupiter is making a trine with the third house, he was gallant. But there was purity

even in his gallantry. He never became violent unnecessarily.

Fourth House

Saturn aspects the fourth house, hence his mother had a long life; but he did not receive

mother‟s affection. Due to the lord of fourth house is in the sixth, he had very little family

Page 4: KN RAO BOOK 17

life as he used to be away from home, mostly on the battlefields. This was again the reason

for the members of the family having enmity with him, making excuse of Mastani’s arrival.

Fifth House

Jupiter the lord of the fifth house in the seventh house made him knowledgeable and

intelligent and blessed with good sons. Saturn, the lord of the sixth house, is in the seventh

house, which created for him plenty of enemies; but he earned a lot of wealth from them.

Since Mars is exalted in the sixth house, he always defeated enemies. Mars aspects Venus,

hence women used to be attracted towards him, but he never exploited the situation because

of Jupiter's aspect on Venus.

Sixth House

Mars the lord fourth house in the sixth house did not allow him to enjoy family life.

Members of his own family became his enemies. His mother, brother Chimaji and son Nana

behaved like enemies in the Mastani episode. The members of family did not appreciate his

greatness; hence he remained unsatisfied at home.

Seventh House

Saturn is in the seventh house in Aquarius. He loved from heart to heart. Since Jupiter and

Moon are also located there, there was purity in his love and devoid of lust. His love was

divine. Since Rahu aspects the seventh house from opposition, his wife Kashibai had ill

health and used to be sick, often. Bajirao cared her lovingly since Jupiter and Moon are in the

seventh house. He loved Mastani whole heartedly. He married Mastani, she was not his

concubine. Mastani, too, was a virtuous, talented artist. She loved Bajirao with purity.

Kashibai was never jealous of Mastani. Bajirao married Kashibai due to Jupiter and Mastani

due to Moon. Bajirao was loyal to both and was not a womaniser.

Eighth House

Mercury has the opposition aspect with the eighth house; hence he was ephemeral. He

suffered from paratyphoid, which was not diagnosed properly. He died at the age of forty.

Jupiter, the lord of the eighth house is in the seventh house hence he passed away

unexpectedly.

Ninth House

Mars, the lord of ninth house, being exalted, he was fortunate. But Mars was located in the

sixth house (enemy‟s house). Hence, Bajirao’s Guru Bramhendraswami became his enemy. Bajirao

used to donate money to his Guru. But the same money was lent to Bajirao as loan and his

Guru harassed him for interest and return of loans. Due to Saturn's aspect with the ninth

house, he traveled the length and breadth of the country and prospered during this journey.

Page 5: KN RAO BOOK 17

Tenth House

Venus, the lord of tenth house along with Sun in the first house crafted him successful in

diplomacy; however Venus conjunct with Rahu led to early demise of his father.

Eleventh House

Since Jupiter has a trine with the eleventh house, he had prosperity. Mercury, the lord of

eleventh house exalted in the second house blessed him with prosperity of all sorts. These

were based on his intellect.

Twelfth House

Moon, the lord of the twelfth house conjunct with Saturn and aspected by Rahu in

opposition. Mars aspects the 12th house due to which he had huge loans and enormous

expenditure. Since moon is the lord of 12th house and is conjunct with Jupiter, both being

auspicious planets, he borrowed personal loans and spent on charity and nation building.

Ascendant

eo being the ascendant, his built was like a king and quite impressive. He had a broad

shoulders, sharp vision, manly beauty and leadership qualities. He liked perfumes.

People always surrounded him. He had a smiling face; his smile was captivating and

impressive. He got all round success and was a great diplomat. He used to dominate others

easily, was strong and healthy. He used to draw pleasure in judging one‟s strength. He was

like a volcano. He didn‟t like others guidance, he was aggressive, progressive, magnanimous,

gallant and used to maintain self-respect.

His attitude was modern, had the courage to break old traditions and set new customs.

Hence he married Mastani. He planned thread ceremony for his son Samsher Bahaddar, born

to Mastani. He accepted wrath of Brahmins and members of family. His love was pure due to

the aspect of Venus over Jupiter and Moon. These two planets and exalted Mercury granted

him the ability to carry out in- depth study. He vehemently stated that Hinduism accepts

paternal system of society; hence Samsher Bahaddar must be regarded as a Hindu Brahmin.

Even Shankaracharya had to accept his argument.

Now, let us analyse the moon sign chart.

Due to conjunction of Jupiter and Moon, there was purity in his beauty. Saturn being in

Aquarius, he was tall and agile, hence he used to ride a horse with a great speed. He defeated

his enemies because of his swift moves. Owing to Aquarius, he used to consider any issue in

depth and study it in details.

L

Page 6: KN RAO BOOK 17

Although, he had lot of things in mind, he would reveal only a few, he was diplomatic. Due

to aspect of Venus on the Moon, he had a pleasing personality, attractive built and face, he

was straightforward, pure at heart, bright, had a liking for fine arts. He was shrewd,

diplomatic since Saturn is close to Moon. He never ditched anyone; but never got cheated by

others, too. He believed in „Shatham Pratishathyam’ („Tit for Tat‟ policy).

Mercury is in opposition of second house and Jupiter the lord of second house is in the first

house with Saturn and Moon; hence his speech was clear, pure, intellectual and meaningful.

Both Mars and Saturn aspect with the third house hence he had high degree of valour.

Further Mars is exalted and Saturn is in the first house in its own sign Aquarius hence his

valour was accentuated. However malefic planets Saturn and Mars aspecting the third house

(related to brothers) triggered his brother Chimaji to be against him in the Mastani episode.

Venus the lord of fourth place is in the seventh house, hence he had a beautiful wife; but

since Venus conjunct with Rahu, he had limited family life, it was not satisfying. Venus the

lord of fourth house (which concerns mother) is with Rahu, further Saturn, Mars, and

Jupiter have aspects with Venus hence mother‟s love, too, was eclipsed. Venus indicates

semen virile, love for a female which affected mother‟s love. Radhabai started harassing

Bajirao due to Mastani’s presence. Due to Jupiter‟s aspect with Venus there was no total break

up with mother. Bajirao‟s devotion to mother was great, hence he kept on loving his mother

and for her sake kept Mastani away.

Mercury the lord of fifth house being exalted, he had sons; but he got moderate love from

them. Since lord of fifth house is in the eighth house for death, in a way, his son was

instrumental for his death. Bajirao‟s son Nana took an extreme view in the Mastani episode;

he put her under house arrest and kept a watch on Bajirao. Bajirao felt quite harassed and lost

the will to live. Hence he did not heed to medical advice. He used to enter river Narmada

Page 7: KN RAO BOOK 17

when he had high fever due to paratyphoid. Frustrated Bajirao used to ask his colleagues,

„Whom should I live for?‟

Jupiter aspects the fifth house (concerning knowledge) and lord of the fifth house, Mercury

is in its own sign and is exalted; hence Bajirao had a sharp but pure intelligence.

Since Mars aspects the sixth house (concerning enemy) his enemies were always destroyed

by him. Sun, the lord of the seventh house, is located in the seventh house only, in

conjunction with Venus; hence he had a bright and beautiful wife. Further, she was sober

since Jupiter and Moon are watching the seventh house. Saturn aspects the seventh house

indicating bigamy. Both the women were beautiful, affectionate. However, due to Rahu in the

seventh house, his wife Kashi used to be often sick. Aspect of Mars on the seventh house, kept

him away from his wives, on battlefield. Mercury, the lord of the eighth house, in the eighth house,

gave him a short life span. However, due to the Jupiter's aspect on a Trine, he was fortunate.

However, the ninth lord Venus is conjunct with Rahu, therefore he did not get a good Guru.

His Guru Brahmendraswami Dhawadshikar did not behave like „Guru‟.

Mars, the lord of the tenth house, is in the twelfth house, he lost his father when he was

young. Mars in the third house from the tenth house, his father, too was gallant. Jupiter in

the first house indicates that he gained everything only by fair means. Saturn the lord of the

twelfth house and Mars in the twelfth house, created enormous expenditure, he almost

became bankrupt. However, Saturn conjunct with Jupiter and Moon aspected by Sun, the

expenditure was for charity and for political reasons.

Saturn aspects the tenth house and hence he was in service throughout his life. However, lord of

tenth house Mars is exalted and Saturn is in its own sign, position of his employment was of

a very high rank where he could display his spark and valour.

Notes of Historians

istorian Grant Duff wrote – „Bajirao had both, head to plan and hands to execute.‟

Saturn in its own sign Aquarius with Moon and Jupiter; Sun, from in its own sign

Leo aspects Moon and Jupiter, hence he had an efficiently organizing mind and

skill. Since exalted Mars is aspecting the third house (relates to hands), he was capable of

executing his plans. Aries, the third house and exalted Mars the lord of the house aspect its

own house and the exalted Mars aspects it; hence strength of his hands got multiplied.

Historian Yadunath Sarkar aptly described Bajirao as the ‘Heaven born cavalry leader’. In the

natal chart, Saturn from Aquarius aspects the ninth house; further Mars, the lord of the

ninth house aspects its own ninth house. Saturn gave him the speed of whirlwind, while

Mars imparted him valour.

Mars- 06-21 Rahu- 10-22 Pluto- 05-20

Sun and Mercury are in the seventh, Mars in the third, Jupiter in the eleventh, and Saturn in

sixth house. Mars aspects his sixth, ninth and the tenth house, hence he defeated his enemy,

became victorious and successful. Saturn was in the sixth house, hence enemy was quite

elderly and superior to Bajirao, and still Bajirao defeated him.

iii) Defeat of Mohamed Bankash, 19-03-1729.

Sun- 11-08 Jupiter – 03-07 Uranus 07-06 Venus-00-23

Moon- 07-01 Saturn- 10-13, Neptune- 01-18 Mercury- 11-15

Mars- 01-14 Rahu- 10-02 Pluto- 05-22

Sun was in the eighth house hence there was threat to life; but moon was in the fourth house

hence victory was easy. Mars in the tenth house sharpened his ability. Since transit Saturn

Page 9: KN RAO BOOK 17

was in the same house just as the birth chart i.e. in the seventh house, he got one more

beautiful partner Mastani. Venus was also in the ninth house aspected by Saturn; hence his

fortune helped him. Jupiter placed in the twelfth house aspected his fourth house and hence

victory was easy.

iv) Victory over General Dabhade at Dabhoi on 01-04- 1731

Sun- 11-21 Jupiter – 05-10 Ketu- 02-22

Moon- 09-05 Venus- 10-04 Uranus- 07-15

Mercury- 10-28 Rahu 08-22 Pluto- 05-26

Sun was in the eighth house, his life was under threat. Moon was in the sixth house

(enemy‟s house), therefore enemy was from his own community, and hence he had to act

mildly. Mars in the eleventh house aspects the sixth house which resulted in defeat of the

enemy and gains from the campaign as well. Jupiter in the second house (represents wealth

and family) aspects the sixth house, hence enemy was from his own community; hence

Bajirao had to take mild action. Both Jupiter and Saturn aspects the tenth house, hence there

was a total victory.

v) Invasion on Bhopal and victory over Nizam 25-10-1737 to 07-01-1738

The planetary position as on 25-10-1737 was as below-

Sun- 06-11 Jupiter- 10-23 Ketu- 10-15

Moon –07-01 Venus- 05-03 Uranus 08-08

Mars- 08-05 Saturn- 02-05 Neptune- 02-10

Mercury- 06-14 Rahu- 04-15 Pluto 06-13

Sun was in the third house hence there was tremendous high spirit. Mars was aspecting the

eighth house (of death). There was a threat to life. Mercury was supporting Sun in the third

house intellectually. Venus was in the second house (wealth). Saturn was aspecting the

ascendant and the eighth house, hence power of Mars was diluted and life was saved. Jupiter

was in the seventh house. Bajirao overpowered Nizam in a difficult situation and forced him

for a truce.

The planetary position on 07-01-1738 was as below-

Sun- 08-26 Jupiter- 10-28 Ketu- 10-11

Moon- 03-09 Venus-08-05 Uranus- 08-12

Page 10: KN RAO BOOK 17

Mars- 09-26 Saturn- 02-00-32 Neptune- 02-08

Mercury- 09-06 Rahu- 04-11 Pluto- 06-15

Sun was in the fifth house aspecting the eleventh house (of gains) indicating that the truce

was gainful. Both Mars and Mercury were in the sixth house in Capricorn. Hence, the

enemy was defeated due to Bajirao‟s valour and intellect. Jupiter was at its original position

in the seventh house and graced trinal aspects on the third house (concerns valour) and

eleventh house. That implies gains through valour. Saturn in the eleventh house made him

gain a lot of wealth through this invasion; all guess work came true and he emerged

victorious. Uranus was in the third house, Neptune was in the eleventh house giving

benefits.

vi) Invasion on Delhi on 29-03-1737

Sun – 00-11 Jupiter- 10-18 Ketu- 10-26

Moon- 10-24 Venus- 01-04 Uranus- 08-11

Mars- 03-23 Saturn- 01-17 Neptune- 02-05

Mercury- 10-20 Rahu- 04-26 Pluto- 06-12

Sun was in the eighth house, life was under threat. Mars was in the twelfth house aspecting

the sixth house indicating destruction of enemy. Mercury and Jupiter in the seventh house

aspects the ascendant hence life was saved. Jupiter's trinal aspect on the third house (valour)

and eleventh (gains) houses resulted in gains through valour. Since Saturn was in the tenth

house, enemy was overpowered rapidly.

vii) Death on Thursday the 28 April 1740

Ascendant- Pisces, Moon in Taurus

Sun- 00-17 Rahu- 02-28. Pluto- 06-19

Moon- 01-11 Jupiter- 02-18 Ketu-08-27

Mercury-00-25 Venus-01-28 Uranus 08-24

Mars- 11-07 Saturn- 02-28 Neptune- 02-12

Sun and Mercury were in the ninth house, Mars in the eighth house (death), Saturn, Jupiter

and Rahu were in the eleventh house (gains). Saturn was aspecting the eighth house. Jupiter,

the lord of eighth house, was with Rahu. Mars is responsible for blood disorders, whereas

Saturn created „Vaata-Dosha’ (an Ayurvedic term to depict a type of disorder) which resulted

in his death. It was paratyphoid in which both blood and intestines are affected resulting in

death.

Page 11: KN RAO BOOK 17

Note:

s per my calculations, 18 August 1700 was not a full-moon day of Bhadrapada

month.

18-08-1997 was a full-moon day in the month of Shravan. Let us check the „tithi‟

of 18-08-1700, which is 297 years ago. Considering the solar year has 365.25 days,

thus 297 years implies 108479.25 days. Deduct two days for leap years since two

centuries have gone past, to get 108477.25. This is to be divided by the number of days of a

lunar year i.e. 354.36696. The remainder of the division is 40.96 days. One lunar month is

29.53058, deducting it we get 11.43 days. That implies 11.43 days were left after full moon day.

Thus 18th August +11 days=29 August 1700 was the day when it was full moon day of

Bhadrapada. 18 August 1700 was the third day after new moon day, Bhadrapada Shuddha

Tritiya.?

Accordingly, moon was in sign Virgo or in the second house of Bajirao‟s birth chart. It does

not affect the prediction, since all other planets remain as discussed above.

In my opinion, he must be born in Bhadrapada Pournima (full moon day). Based on that

somebody related it to a date, which was not correct. Most likely, his date of birth could be

29 August 1700, because his mother Radhabai must have said that Bajirao was born on the full

moon day of Bhadrapada lunar month. The Western calendar was not used in India, then.

Hence Radhabai quoting a date was impossible, so we must believe in the „tithi‟.

Why does this discrepancy of 11 days occur?

It is due to the shift of dates made by Pope Gregory during 1582 to adjust the seasons. After

4th October, the date should be 5th; but he took 15th of October 1582. He eliminated 11 days.

Although, British did not accept the change suggested by Gregory immediately, eventually,

they accepted and after 2nd September 1752, instead of 3rd September, they labeled the date

14th September 1752. Bajirao‟s birth date is 18th August 1700 which is after 1582 and prior to

1752. Hence there was confusion in English calendar. Therefore it is not wise to use the date.

It is intelligent to use the Tithi of Hindu calendar. Dates are imaginary, so that there may be

mistakes. Tithi is not imaginary. Tithi is evident from the Moon. Readers must take a note of

that there cannot be any mistake in the Tithi.

A
