Barry Robert GatfieldBorn 13 June 1938Died 4 March 2009

Aged 70

Barry started collecting in 1979 when his young son Darryl

had to accrue a sizeable amount of money to buybike for

himself.

He had heard how you could get good money for old bottles

that had a marble in them, so Dad found out more about how

it was done and off father and son went to get rich.

They were told that you could get old bottles from under old

houses and so they found one with reasonable easy access

and it looked empty so under they went. After about an hour

of finding only broken bottles they finally hit the jackpot of a

couple of whole bottles

but not the ones with the marble. Then they heard the gate

open and then BIG hob-nailed boots just above their heads,

Darryl went white with fear as it was a gang house and Barry's

complexion change to pale as well. That sat for ages trying to

keep the gang from hearing their knees knocking and then

finally everyone upstairs left and so did Barry and Darryl at a

great rate of speed.

So that is how it all began for Barry, they had found a stone

ginger beer and 2 glass bottles and the stone ginger beer

really got a hold of Barry and that is what started him on

stoneware.

He collected crocks and ginger beers first and then he

discovered General stoneware, his first a lifetime favourite

piece was his Blue Huston Barrel. That barrel started him on

the road to competing for the Red Ribbon (Champion of

Champions)

He was a member of the Wellington Bottle Club for many

years and loved going to the meetings with his latest acquisi-

tion. He travelled all over New Zealand to shows and seldom

did he miss a ribbon.

He started showing in 1982 At the Easter Bottle Show at the

Horticultural hall In Lower Hutt and won two First Places in B

section with Crocks and General Stoneware.

He then travelled to Napier and did the same there at the

Nationals.

In 1984 He entered the General Stoneware A section and won

first place again.

He travelled to Christchurch and at the Ninth National won A

Section of General Stoneware.

In 1985 he caused a sensation when he arrived to show a

Peter Hutson Water-fountain. He won all sorts of prizes for her

(public vote, exhibitioners vote, best exhibit,).

In 1986 Barry finally won his Champion of Champions Red

ribbon.

That was also his last show as other things took his fancy, but

his love of stoneware travelled through his life with him.

Barry would be happy that his collection is going to be in the

public eye again

It will be nice to see what was his being showed all over N.Z.

again.

Thanks Barry’s life partner Pat Robinson
