ShowUp for Le$$

Monty Python’s Spamalot Presented by Phoenix Theatre at Phoenix Theatre ShowUp for Le$$ Price: $38.00 Regular Price: $76.00 Tickets available for select dates in September

Phoenix Theatre kicks off its 92nd season with one of the funniest shows on Earth, Monty Python’s Spamalot. Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical, Spamalot, written by Monty Python alum Eric Idle, lovingly rips off the

film classic Monty Python and The Holy Grail to tell the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their epic quest. However, diverting a bit from the real story, this hilarious musical that pokes fun at Broadway musicals features such oddities as a line of beautiful dancing girls, flatulent Frenchmen, cows and killer rabbits. Phoenix Theatre’s own associate artistic director, Robert Kolby Harper, performs the role of Robin, while Phoenix favorite Toby Yatso tackles Lancelot.

Reviewers’ Roundtable

The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

‘The Awakening’

Rebecca Hall plays an author in 1921 London who is approached by a teacher (Dominic West) to investigate the recent death of a student at his all-boys boarding school and finds her reliance on science to be insufficient to explain the strange phenomenon going on around her. (R – 107 minutes)

Stan: “Admittedly, my ‘guilty pleasure’ genre is ‘B’ sci-fi films and frequently my TV sits on the SyFy Channel on a ‘B’ sci-fi/horror/thriller movie. This view of the genre from our British counterpart [which I’ve always enjoyed in the genre] and a ‘grandiose’ effort with a period film setting, the story from writer/director Nick Murphy for his feature film debut, down plays the usual ‘bump-scares’ of the genre and up plays the psychologically implied drama, and

yes, I had to know how it ends which is a key factor to the genre.” Grade: C

Joseph: “‘The Awakening’ has more atmosphere and emotional depth than most horror flicks. Unfortunately, it also has more downtime, resulting in a ghost story with less ‘boo’s’ than ‘zzz’s.’ Thanks to its reliance on melodrama as opposed to supernatural scares, writer/director Nick Murphy’s first feature-length film – an import from the UK – will likely appeal to both moviegoers who do not ordinarily see horror flicks as well as fans of the genre. However, about halfway through the story shifts, losing both its believability and its audience’s interest.” Grade: D

‘Celeste and Jesse Forever’

Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg play a couple that met in high school, married young and are now growing apart. They agree to separate, attempting to maintain their friendship while each of them pursues other people. (R – 91 minutes) Stan: “As with the smaller independent films, ‘Celeste and

Jesse Forever’ takes advantage of the aspect of not following the traditional ‘feel good’ romantic comedies of bigger films and grounds the story in the ‘not so perfect world of relationships’. The non-traditional ‘Hollywood ending’ is a welcomed change, just as real life relationships are tenuous at best, and the film reminds us of that one true love that wasn’t meant to be…” Grade: C

Joseph: “‘Celeste and Jesse Forever’ is a decent albeit unbalanced romantic dramedy. After all, from its title, one would anticipate that director Lee Toland Krieger’s movie – which was written by Will McCormack and star Rashida Jones – would afford both leads an equal amount of screen time. And while the journey is enjoyable, too much time is spent with Jones’ Celeste whereas Andy Samberg’s Jesse – the more likeable of the two – draws the short straw, sort of speak.” Grade: C

‘The Expendables 2’*

Old-school mercenaries are reunited when they are enlisted to take on a seemingly simple job. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the mercenaries are compelled to seek revenge in hostile

territory where the odds are stacked against them. (R – 103 minutes)

*Not made available for review.

‘Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai’

A samurai arrives at the doorstep of his feudal lord, requesting an honorable death by ritual suicide. The lord threatens him with the tale of a desperate young ronin who made a similar request with ulterior motives, only to meet a grisly end. Undaunted, the samurai tells a story of his own, with an ending no one could see coming. (NR – 126 minutes)

Joseph: “‘Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai’ wields more than most martial arts motion pictures. Granted, the new Japanese-language drama – Takashi Miike’s remake of Masaki Kobayashi’s 1962 cinematic adaptation of Yasuhiko Takiguchi’s novel – has enough keenly choreographed swordplay to satisfy fans of the genre. However, it also has enough metaphorical swordplay – the kind in which words are used as weapons – to appeal to other audiences, as well.” Grade: C

‘Hit and Run’

Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell play a young couple that risks it all when they leave their small town life and embark on a road trip that may lead them towards the opportunity of a lifetime only to be chased by a federal marshal (Tom Arnold), an ex-boyfriend (Michael Rosenbaum) and a very dangerous criminal (Bradley Cooper). (R – 100 minutes)

Stan: “This co-directed film from director David Palmer and director/star Dax Shepard has the quirkiness of a Quentin Tarantino film with the addition of an assortment of eclectic character portrayals that each of our own ‘off center’ side will latch onto. My two: Bradley Cooper who’s a 180 degree turn from his ‘nice guy’ roles is ‘not to be reckon with dangerous’, and Tom Arnoldwith a similarity to his ‘True Lies’ (1994) character with a lot of ‘over-the-top’ borderline schizophreniaadded for good measure, is a real hoot!” Grade: B

Joseph: “‘Hit & Run’ takes views on an extremely entertaining ride. The new comedy, which was written and co-directed by star Dax Shepard, is packed with action, laughs and recognizable actors – the best of

whom is Tom Arnold, who gives a performance unlike one you have ever seen him achieve before. The exciting chain of events gets more and more eccentric by the minute, making for a very fun film.” Grade: B

‘The Odd Life of Timothy Green’

Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton play a couple who cannot wait to start a family but can only dream about what their child would be like. When a young boy (CJ Adams) shows up on their doorstep one stormy night, the couple learns that sometimes the unexpected can bring some of life’s greatest gifts. (PG – 125 minutes)

Stan: “With a basic premise that asks a lot at the onset, CJ Adams as a mysterious young boy who is ‘suddenly’ a part of a childless couple, and, Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton as the couple who’s heartfelt desire becomes a reality, the performances of these three ‘thespians’ moves the story from its fantasy ‘roots’ to a believable drama that rekindles the joys of parenthood that many of us have been fortunate enough to have experienced.” Grade: B

Joseph: “‘The Odd Life of Timothy Green’ is a humungously heartfelt fairy tale. Moreover, only Disney could tell a story with such organic emotion – which, let’s face it, is not the easiest task when said story is this farfetched. Needless to say, it takes a little suspension of disbelief to take in this tall tale about what is essentially the epitome of a Cabbage Patch Kid. However, the happiness and high spirits that sprout out of this motion picture are well worth the extra effort.” Grade: B

‘ParaNorman’

Kodi Smit-McPhee voices a misunderstood boy who, able to speak with the dead, takes on zombies, ghosts, and witches and – worst of all – grown-ups to save his town from a centuries old curse and finds his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits. (PG – 93 minutes)

Stan: “Cute in its basic theme of a young boy who is the ‘Ghostbuster’ of his small town, ‘ParaNorman’ is more adult minded with lines from the boy like ‘Don’t make me use the Hummus, its spicy’ as one of his

Sdefenses [elicited a chuckle from this reviewer], is sure to go over the heads of younger viewers. The voice-work of Kodi Smit-McPhee as the boy captured my attention with more than enough to see it through to the end.” Grade: C+

Joseph: “‘ParaNorman’ is dead on arrival. The new stop-motion animated adventure from Laika Entertainment – the studio responsible for 2009’s grim masterpiece’Coraline’ - is a colossal disappointment, lacking both the unrivaled originality and immeasurable charm of that earlier effort. What we are left with is a tedious fairy tale in which the jokes yield less laughs than they do zombie-like groans.” Grade: D

‘Sparkle’*

Jordin Sparks plays a musical prodigy who struggles to become a star while overcoming issues that are tearing her family apart. She tries to balance being a daughter to a single mother (Whitney Houston) and a romance with her manager (Derek Luke) all while starting a dynamic singing group during the Motown-

era. (PG-13 – 120 minutes)

*Screened after deadline.

‘Union Square’

Tammy Blanchard plays a woman who, having rejected her tumultuous family and cut off communication, is almost ready to commit to her longtime fiancé when her sister (Mira Sorvino) surprises her with a visit. Their combustible reunion brings them to unforeseen places, shattering and reconstructing both of their worlds. (R – 80 minutes)

Joseph: “Mira Sorvino’scharacter in ‘Union Square’ would make even Romy White cringe. The new drama from writer/director Nancy Savoca features a pair of protagonists – one of which is portrayed by Sorvino – who are so annoying that they essentially qualify the motion picture as completely and utterly unwatchable. After all, why would anyone root for these characters to work out their differences with one another when they themselves cannot even stand to be in their presence for a mere 80 minutes.” Grade: F

Soundbite Spotlight

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released in theaters.

Actor/Writer/Co-Director Dax Shepard (‘Hit and Run’)

By Joseph J. Airdo

“I am a gear-head at my core. All of my free time is made up of motor sports endeavors, be them motorcycles or off-road racing or track days. I just love anything with an engine. That is one of my main loves. Obviously, my other well-known love is Kristen Bell. Plus, everyone else in the movie is a close, personal friend of mine so this was really just an excuse for me to get together everything I love for 6 weeks.

“I did not have a stunt double even one time in this movie, which was one of the reasons I made it in the first place. I wanted to go have fun and do the stunts I had seen in movies as a kid. My main inspiration was showing off in my cars. I got to do

all of that. And those days were just unbelievable. We sometimes had 14 hours of straight driving, going through four sets of tires in a single afternoon. That is about as good as it gets for me. That is nirvana.

“I learned that capturing car chases is a lot harder than I imagined it would be. I thought that the difficult part of a car chase is getting the cars to do what you want them to do. But, in fact, what is really difficult is photographing what they are doing in a way that truly conveys how exciting the stunt itself is. There is much more that goes into mapping out the different shots to keep an action sequence feeling high-energy. That stuff is technically very challenging so I learned a lot during that process.” – Dax Shepard

‘The Imposter’

A 13-year-old boy disappears without a trace from his home in San Antonio, Texas. Three and a half years later, he is found alive thousands of miles

away in a village in southern Spain. His family is overjoyed to bring him home but all is not quite as it seems. (R – 91 minutes)

‘The Truth is Out There’, Part 7’

By Stan Robinson

Continuing the ‘debunking’ of the article ‘Readers Digest: 13 Things a Movie Theater Employee Won’t Tell You’ by Ilana Strauss; Brian Deveny, theater owner (since 1975) and Chairmen of the Arizona Theater Owners Association; David Ramsey, movie critic (since 1994) and President of the Phoenix Film Critics Society; and myself, a movie reviewer (since 2006) and Film Columnist with AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine, examine the next items on the list of 13…

10. No, I can’t give you extra cups. Everything is inventoried at the end of the night.

Brian: “This is the only statement of the total 13 things that’s 100% true! I carry a decent size courtesy cup, as do most theater owners/managers, because those aren’t inventoried. Just ask for a courtesy cup, and if any one just has to have a full size cup they have to pay for it, it is inventoried! That statement is a hundred per cent true. The larger cups are inventoried.”

David: “While it is true they use cups to inventory the number of drinks sold every theatre I have ever been in have courtesy cups they will give you at no charge. They will even fill them with ice and water. When you ask for any extra cup that is what you get. Some theaters (Harkins) have larger courtesy cups than others that come with lids.”

Stan: “I’ve frequently asked for a second water cup when I have a guest with me and have never been refused. And yes, I would guess that items are inventoried but more for replenishing and not to limit customer use.”

VINO and VERSE… WINE BLOGSA great way to get an honest opinion about wine is through a wine blog. Bloggers tend to be opinionated, honest and, at times, a little over the top. Although there are unspoken rules about blogging, there really aren’t that many rules and it’s a great way to hear a point of view you might not hear from an experienced journalist. Mind you, these are not always professional writers and therefore you might find more typos and curse words than you are used to but overall I appreciate bloggers and their unique perspectives.

If you love wine then take some time to follow a few bloggers that fit your perspective. Just like wine, you will find some you like, and some you won’t. You have to taste a few… ahem, read a few to find out.

If you would like to follow some of our local winemakers here in Arizona, check out:

●● Canelo Hills Winery: Find out from a family winery, the trials and tribulations of running a vineyard and winery all by your-self. There are some cheers and some tears… www.canelohills-winery.com/blog

●● Lawrence Dunham Vineyards: Hear from owners Peggy Fian-daca and Curt Dunham on their unique perspective of owning and running a winery in the Chirica-hua foothills in southeastern Ari-zona and living in Fountain Hills. They have a true love of fine wine and love to share ways you can improve your own wine pleasure. www.lawrencedunhamvineyards.com/blog.html

●● Kent Callaghan of Callaghan Vineyards: Enjoy reading Kent’s

tasting notes from the many unique and special wines he en-counters. Kent has a highly expe-rienced palate and the informa-tion he provides is very insightful. You might learn something about a new wine!

●● Maynard James Keenan of Ca-duceus Vineyards: Yes, we have a rock star that makes wine in Arizona (and very good wine at that). Check out his journal on the Caduceus website. Follow him through his journey of grow-ing and making amazing Arizona wine. (Note… they are working on a new website. Once the new site is launched the blog may be at a different url) www.caduceus.org (click on tab: journal)

●● One of the most detailed blogs on every aspect of starting a vineyard and beginning your own winery. Mark Beres and Mark Moeller are two rockets scien-

tists (No kidding! You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to grow grapes, but these guys are!) They explain in great detail everything that goes into planting, growing and cultivating grape vines and a winery from scratch. www.flying-leapvineyards.com/blog/

●● Weekly Wine Journal: Tim Hilcove lives in Phoenix and loves wine. For fun he started a website and blog, taking pictures, videos and writing his opinions and experi-ences about wine in Arizona. www.weeklywinejournal.com

●● Wine Inquirer: Jim Seder started Wine Inquirer to share his love of fine wine and Arizona. Living in Tucson, Jim features articles on Old World and New World, start-ing discussions with his audience about interesting nuances of the wine world and of specific wines. www.wineinquirer.com

●● Wine a bit… you’ll feel better: Re-nee Keele started this blog about wine from an ordinary person’s perspective. She talks about wines she drinks at home and those she enjoys while traveling. You’ll also find interesting food posts and recipes to pair with your wines. www.wineabit.net

●● A new concept, Experience 52 explores wine, tacos and beer… who knows what’s next. If you’re interested to learn more about the wines they drink each week, check out lo-cally based Kristi Trimmer at www.52wines52weeks.com

●● Wine Spectator alum, James Suckling always has something interesting to say about wine (and a lot more)… www.james-suckling.com

Of course, don’t forget to check out Arizona Vines & Wines publisher’s blog at ArizonaVinesAndWines.com.

A Winning Approach to Wine Lists

By Marlene P. Baumann

You’ve been handed the wine list when dining out. Maybe it’s an evening out with a special person, dinner with a group

of friends, or a high-stakes business dinner. Either way, the wine list can cause anxiety to creep in—even for experienced wine buffs—nobody wants to make a mistake. Some wine lists are excruciating! We’ve all seen wines lists with print so small it takes a magnifying glass orthose so many pages you feel you’re at the library. There is no reason to let the wine list spoil your wonderful evening. It is your spending money and your free time. You want it to be pleasant and the restaurant does too.

Let’s walk through a game plan for navigating a wine list. First, if possible think ahead about the restaurant. Most have their wine lists posted on their websites – it’s worth checking out what’s on their list and the various price points. I encourage you to set a wine budget and know your wine style preferences in advance, especially if you are going to an exclusive, special occasion kind of place. There will be a sommelier—let your budget and preferences be known. Then let them do a great job in delighting you. The sommelier knows the wine list inside and out and truly has been hired by the restaurant to help you find enjoyable wines. He or she doesn’t want to make you uncomfortable by suggesting wines out of your price range nor wines on your “won’t drink ever list”. No sommelier? Follow your own criteria on budget and wine style.

Wine lists are usually organized by type (sparkling, white, red, sweet) and then further broken down (Country, Region, Appellation). Many will be organized by price within these groups. One typical defect in restaurant wine lists is that they are woefully not current (despite this being the age of computerized inventory…). You’ll see a 1997 something and they bring you the 1999 – many times without even telling you about the switch. To be fair, these are often innocent oversights because restaurants order little quantities at a time and run into inventory problems. My advice is to carefully remember what you ordered (wine name, year, and price) – jot a note to yourself if necessary, because when the bill comes, recall is not the sharpest. It has happened to me and I had to stare down family members who thought I was auditing the bill too carefully…until I saved everyone from an overcharge for a wine we didn’t even have. Playing With Your FoodBy Josh Moffitt, www.ArizonaLandBaron.com

This is an article about an article about a book. Can I do that? If you are reading this, then apparently…..yes. So I read an article in Food & Wine Magazine, written by Ray Isle about a book on wine pairing called Taste Buds and Molecules, written by Francois Chartier.

The “basic idea is that certain aromatic molecules in certain wines and food act as sensory bridges.”

The short version is that it is a highly technical version of the wine pairing principle of “pairing like with like,” using predominant volatile aromatic compounds that you may not have known existed if it were not for science. The book has a series of charts to use as a guide.

In the article, the author has Food & Wine test chef, Marcia Kiesel, prepare an entrée using coffee, Chinese five spice and salmon as recommended by the author or the book. Naturally the chef raises an eyebrow and asks why. The author explains the reasoning and that he wants to pair it with a Zinfandel. We don’t get any more information about the recipe except that Chef Fancy Pants whips up an amazing dish, it pairs surprisingly well with the Zinfandel and the author suggests that readers try this at home.

So, I tried it at home. I dusted some salmon fillets with Chinese five spice, freshly ground coffee and some ground Himalayan pink sea salt and then seared the salmon in avocado

oil. I also puréed some celery root after roasting it with nutmeg, shallot, garlic and butter. I then deglazed the roasting pan with some day-old brewed coffee and chicken stock to create a flavorful sauce which I served over some roasted baby carrots for a side dish.

I paired my dish with a 2009 “Federalist” Zinfandel from Alexander Valley. The salmon was seared a perfect medium rare with a crisp crust of coffee and Chinese five spice. The salmon and the wine tasted good, but I was lacking the “aha” moment of the promised molecularly divined pairing. What could be wrong? Well, after much discussion, we pulled out different Zinfandel. This time we had a 2009 Klinker Brick ‘Old Vine’ Zinfandel from Lodi. This wine was much jammier, with big, bold, earthy, spicy, oaky, smoky flavor that paired immediately with the roasted coffee flavor. The previous wine, the Federalist, was fruity and light. It had good acid to pair well with the fatty salmon and it brought out the lighter spices in the five spice, but the

coffee was in the background. With the Klinker Brick, all I could taste now was the coffee. It did indeed pair well with the dish, but the salmon was now in the background.

So what did I learn by playing with my food? Next time I grill a ribeye, I will try a coffee rub and pair it with an Old Vine Zinfandel. Next time I prepare salmon, I will choose a lighter, fruit forward acidic red wine. Also, I think I will pick up a copy of Taste Buds and Molecules and see what else I can play with.

Craft Beers and the Local Bars Who Love Them!

Hello craft beer lovers and friends, it’s time to take an in depth look at the best places in the East Valley (mostly) to congregate for libation, cuisine, communication and those hard to find brews that don’t always make it into the public eye. In this ‘no particular order’ list of top great pubs and places, you’ll find some old favorites and hopefully a few new hangouts that might not have been on your radar. You may find this catalog a bit different than expected,

but understand that’s the very idea. These places are all locally owned, locally operated and worthy of the title “Best in Valley”.

Kicking things off, let’s start the list of favorites with the Hungry Monk. Established in 2010, this Chandler hangout has quickly become known

for two things, hot wings and India Pale Ales. Most importantly, there is always a deal to be had on both. Famously, Wednesday is the night to congregate here, as all twenty eight beers on tap are only three dollars and the boneless wings are forty nine cents each! There are fifteen or so wing flavors to choose from including a few secret ones if you are in the know. Beers on tap always include local favorites such as Four Peaks Hop Knot, SanTan Brewing Devil’s Ale plus a multitude of strong ales and special beer blends including the Skirt Chaser and the J-Lo. Owner Jim Lolli and second in command Hop

Head Fred share a special passion for beer - and believe me when I say it shows.

Moving forward, let’s take a peek at Boulders on Broadway. Located in Tempe, this place is a staple and longtime participant in our growing community. Established in 2007, Boulders has thirty craft beers on tap as well as great deep dish pizza with breakfast specials on the weekends. Plus, they feature half off most bottled beers on Thursdays. Why is this special you ask? Because there are seventy five to choose from! They consistently feature a very eclectic

range of beers on tap and have been in the game now for quite some time. In addition, the food is quite good and lead bar man Chis Shinn made our list last year as one of the most Influential Beer People in AZ for his love of bringing new, younger clientele from ASU into the craft beer fold.

Moving forward, is my old favorite haunt, Papago Brewing. Established in 2001, Papago located in south Scottsdale, is known quite well for their own brews and offer another 26 craft “guest” beers on tap including a cask engine and four hundred fifty or so bottles for sale, all of the time. In addition, their mug club is the deal of deals. Forty dollars a year gets you $1 off your beers anytime for the entire year and a much larger pour. Beyond that, the pizzas are delicious, plus their chief beer dude Ron Kloth is a Cicerone Beer Expert and was also an inductee in last year’s list of most Influential Beer People.

Another old favorite of sorts, is Taste of Tops. Connected to Tops Liquor in Tempe, Taste of Tops was founded in 2010 with 24 taps handles and a focus on only the rarest of craft beers. Need that one beer no one else can ever seem to get their hands on? This

is the place. A great atmosphere frequented by home brewers and beer geeks alike, Top’s is a mark you will not want to miss. Greg Eccles, Top’s owner, is a Certified Cicerone Beer Expert and is known for helping other industry people pass this most difficult of tests.

Next up is MOTO Sushi located in Phoenix, AZ. Now, I know what you are thinking, a Sushi Bar in this list? The answer: Absolutely! This is no ordinary Sushi Bar. With 8 eclectic beers on tap plus a cask engine for Real Ale and a wild bottle selection, where else in the world would you find this combination? I love the idea of drinking craft beer and eating raw fish! After chatting with owner Vince Heppler, I discovered that Moto is not merely a sushi bar, but rather a bar with sushi. In addition to the beer itself, Moto is also known for their yearly Stone Brewing Anniversary Party and for Meet the Brewer sessions with people like Brian Strumke of Evil Twin Brewing and the Odell Home Brewers Competition. Now that’s craft!

Let’s keep the good momentum going with AZ. Wine in Scottsdale. Ok I know, first a sushi place and now a wine store? Just hear me out. AZ. Wine features 12 dedicated craft tap handles and rotates them constantly. In addition, they have a great philosophy on happy hour as the specials rotate and change every week. On my last visit I drank Bell’s Hop Slam for three dollars a pint. Yes, I said pint! These guys are BIG on LOCAL with many beers and wine produced right here in the Grand Canyon state. Believe it or not, what makes AZ. Wine so special is the unpretentious garage party feel you encounter while drinking there. It’s simple, easy, casual and fun.

Marching on, next up is Fox Cigar Bar in Gilbert. Yes, another surprise!

Don’t forget that this list is for everyone and trust me when I say that I know a lot of smokers who drink craft beer. New to the scene here in the East Valley, Fox has 14 rotating craft beers on tap and 75 whiskeys, bourbons and scotches to pair making this a destination for anyone who likes a good Cuban(ish) stick and fine living. Bar manager Cliff Coen always keeps things fresh with a fantastic rotation of craft beer, single malt scotches and cigars. Most importantly, check out the brand new patio. Not a big smoker? That’s ok, because this patio is cool.

On to yet another gem we go, with OHSO located in the Arcadia district of Phoenix. A relative newcomer, OHSO opened its doors this year with 36 craft tap handles, Gastro Pub style food and a soon to come One Barrel (31 gallon) NanoBrewery on site. With the intention of brewing small batch specialty beers tailor made to fit their customer base, OHSO truly has a leg up on the competition. Happy Hour is generous to say the least with $6 pitchers of local beer that runs from open to 6pm Monday - Friday. The menu features originals such as the Brewer’s Plate which reminds me of a posh ploughman’s lunch and their almost famous Green Chili Dip. PS. Did I mention the amazing patio?

Heading back to into Tempe, we must chat about the Yucca Tap Room. Known in years past as the only tap room without taps, it all changed in 2010 when Ron Amneus was hired to open an adjacent “hideaway” bar of sorts with 16 craft tap handles and an amazing juke box. It’s always a bit odd walking into the Yucca, considering the original bar has been in existence for more than forty years. As you enter this comfy rock and roll dive bar you’ll find an unassuming brown door on the west wall. Walk through to find a completely different pub! Moving into 2012, Ron added another 13 tap handles and a full kitchen where everything is made from scratch with a health conscious attitude. They even grind their own burger meat and hand roll falafels to order.

Perhaps another surprise of sorts

is Trophy’s Steak House in Queen Creek. Trophy’s is an enigma…wrapped in a sweater. A little shocking at first, but very cool once you settle in. The theme here is “North American 29”. Every big game animal available in North America from bears to water buffalo are stuffed and mounted here in a true “hunters” museum-like atmosphere. The eclectic menu consists of wild game and top choice steaks as well as daily specials and burgers. The beer selection is always top notch with 16 craft drafts and a nice bottle selection to boot. Owner Brett Dettler also posts a list of his upcoming kegs so customers know what’s coming next. Happy hour runs from 4pm to 6pm and is always a good time.

Now let’s head out east to the Handlebar Pub in Apache Junction. I realize that A.J. is not known for fine cuisine or craft beer, but don’t be so quick to judge. Founded in 2010 by Jeff and Alec Golzio, Handlebar features 26 all craft beers on tap plus a cask beer engine. Specials include the “Almost Famous” Tuesday pint day where everything in a pint glass is only $3. When it comes to food, this pub has the market cornered. To begin with, the burgers are made from 100% grass-fed free range beef and specials are always house smoked over locally sourced pecan wood. Beyond that, everything else including produce is also locally sourced and organic. Jeff prides himself on being a publican with an atmosphere where people laughing and chatting is always louder that anything on the tele.

Our next stop, TT Road House is a good one indeed. Founded in 1995, TT Road House was selling craft beer from breweries like SKA and Bear Republic long before it was hip to do so. The place has an all-out, anti-authoritarian feel and the barmen all have character. Bar manager Skoog

keeps a great selection of craft beer with a smattering of import and lo-fi domestics such as High Life and PBR to please even the most hardcore punk. Speaking of punk, the jukebox here keeps it real! 13 taps, 30 or so bottles and that jukebox all make for an interesting evening. Here are two insider secrets: the place is said by many locals to be haunted - and when industry reps. from breweries around the country are here in town and off the clock, they can often be found at TT. Shhhh, don’t tell.

Heading back towards south Tempe, it’s time to talk about Flanny’s. Another newcomer to the scene, Flanny’s is best known for their

Third Thursday Tap Takeovers featuring one brewery and many specialty beers. A true family-run establishment, on any given day owner John Flanagan and his son John Jr. plus mum and daughter can be seen fulfilling every duty from bartending and busing to cooking and serving. Overall, a comfortable atmosphere and a nice selection of craft brew earns Flanny’s a spot on the roster.

Next on the list is Sun Devil Liquor in Mesa. Known many years for its selection of well over one thousand beers for purchase to take home, Sun Devil also has a secret, the basement bar. Yes I said basement, this is Mesa after all! Cellar might be the more

appropriate term, but either way it’s all good. As you enter the store, walk straight back and then to the right to find the stairs down to heaven. A comfortable yet rustic bar awaits you with very limited edition craft beers on tap, lots of wine and a comfortable atmosphere. Many craft beer fanatics refer to this as the dungeon, but I truly enjoy this covert cloak and dagger hangout!

Macs Broiler and Tap takes us back into Tempe with an emphasis on pairing. With a menu chock full of in-house hand cut steaks, fresh ground burgers and daily seafood specials, Mac’s focus is more on how the food and beer work together. Eight tap handles feature craft beer from Colorado and Arizona that are chosen mainly in reference to the menu. Barman Joe Bunting, formerly of Papago Brewing and Rock Bottom Brewery, is usually on hand to make sure you get the perfect pint - and you can always bet on a great meal to accompany that brew. Happy Hour specials run from Sunday to Friday and include one dollar off all draft beers. Truly a gem.

Next on deck is Bison Witches, founded in 2004 and located in downtown Tempe. Bison makes the list for the way it makes you feel. As you walk in you are immediately transported to your favorite Flagstaff hangout, deli style, complete with 14 mostly craft beers on tap, bread

bowls filled with warm chili or soup, Grateful Dead on the radio and some crazy shot special to make you forget the day. On that note, the bottle beer selection isn’t too shabby either. Much like the Yucca Craft Tap Room, Bison is hidden away. Just a short walk behind the Brick Yard building on Mill Ave., keep your eyes open and you’ll find it. Bar regulars here tend to keep quiet as they want to keep the secret to themselves. That’s just cool!

Lost Leaf in Phoenix makes our award-winning roster for its unique atmosphere and commitment to craft beer in an area not generally known for that sort of thing. While not exactly in the East Valley, this place is worth a look and certainly worthy of this collection of greats. The Leaf is an Artist owned gallery, bar and live music venue featuring over two

hundred beers, ciders, lambics and meads. Many are gluten-free or organic and only three dollars each daily from 5-7pm. Beers on tap are all local, there’s live music almost every night and the shows are always free. I like it!

Next up is Reserve Room AZ. Now here is a surprise! This little diamond in the rough is Brand Spanking New and located right next door to Down Under Wine in Gilbert. I love this place for their commitment to Belgian beer. Very small, very intimate and quite cool, the bottle selection includes Chimay, Westmalle, Liefmans, Unibroue and Ommegang just to name a few. Check this place out soon and have a chat with owner Josh Ivey who will fill your ear with his knowledge of beer.

Located on the Phoenix/Tempe border in yet another unlikely spot is the Draw Ten Saloon. This little sports bar is famous for its longevity in the area, but now under new owners JB

and Anita, it has flourished as a place to find local craft beer. SanTan, Four Peaks, Sonoran, Sun Up and more are always on tap, alongside pool tables and tremendous support for the Local Rugby Union. That’s good enough for me.

Lucky Break in south Tempe rounds out the list with twenty four beers on tap, more than a dozen gourmet burgers and pool tables galore. This huge upscale sports bar is owned in part by former ASU head coach Dennis Ericson and is a posh yet comfortable little place. Specials include happy hour seven days a week and burger night every Monday. Lucky Break is a great place to drink craft beer, play a little snooker, wrap your mouth around a big fat juicy burger and enjoy the day. Nuff Said.

What I loved most about compiling this wonderful collection is all the different kinds of places I found to drink great beer - and in most cases enjoy a tasty bite to eat. Located all over the city, each and every one of these gems is well worth your time and a bit of your hard earned currency.

As always, feel free to contact me at [email protected] with opinions, comments and questions. I love to hear them! Until next week, cheers!

“Finding time to relax is never really that far away”

One of my all-time favorite places that I used to bartend at actually is now The Beach Pit. The vibe is way more chill, with some reggae music and more selections for your beer. The new management is awesome; they treat you like one of their friends. The happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 3pm-7pm. They have dollar off basically everything you can drink. The best deal that I think that they have is 5 coronitas in a bucket for $6…and that’s all day every day. They have BBQ style food and people are already raving about it considering that it just opened last week. They have added TV’s now all around the restaurant, which helps liven up and modernize it a bit. I met Matt, Megan and Dennis and they offer great service! You will not be disappointed! This spot is new and improved and ready for a strong come back!! 414 South Mill Ave. #118 Tempe, AZ 85281

Hear the Vibrations!By Justin Patrick

There are unlimited choices when it comes to cell phones today. Whether you prefer a smartphone, a basic flip-phone, an android, apple, blackberry or any of the numerous other devices and platforms available, there remains one simple fact about them all. If you’re in a loud environment like a noisy restaurant or in an industrial construction area, it can be nearly impossible to hear someone on the other end of the line. Kyocera, a maker of many popular consumer electronics, has created a new technology to rescue us from these noisy situations that render our cell phones useless.

The Urbano Progresso, currently available in Japan, is the name of the phone that Kyocera has created that uses no speakers to produce sound. The problem with speakers is that they produce sound waves that get mixed up with all of the other sounds around us. This can make it impossible to distinguish your call from everything else that you can hear. The new Urbano Progresso uses an actuator system that translates audio signals into vibrations…

This “tissue conduction” system transmits vibrations through soft tissue and directly to the eardrum. Since sound waves die off faster when traveling through tissue, engineers at Kyocera built a ceramic actuator that sends out strong vibrations through the phone’s screen, into the skin and tissue of the face, and on to the eardrum.

Although Kyocera has stated that this phone will remain in Japan only, expect to see this technology called “Smart Sonic Receiver,” co-developed by Kyocera and KDDI in the US within the next year. I certainly cannot wait to get my hands on this technology so that I can hear my calls anywhere.

Whether they love the explosion-filled flicks or the classic cartoons, fans of the Transformers are all too familiar with their tragic origin. The planet of Cybertron is in the middle of a civil war between the tyrannical Decepticons and the peace-loving Autobots. Your mission begins here as you guide the transforming robots through the gritty, war-torn world, fighting the battles that would shape the destinies of Autobot and Decepticon alike.

“Transformers: Fall of Cybertron” is a third-person action/shooter that helps re-create the brutal battles between the Autobots and Decepticons. The game is truly a fan’s dream come true, thanks to the epic scale of the world that includes such iconic heroes as Metroplex and Grimlock, complete with their legendary transformations. Multiplayer shines as well, with 12-player action across multiple modes and some of the most detailed character creation to date.

“Transformers: Fall of Cybertron” offers not only a brilliant representation of the world-famous robots but an entertaining gaming experience as well.

SUPER DUPER BRAVE…. Or Super Duper Dumb?

You be the Judge!

Moving forward with RUSH, a closer look at ten of the most dangerous stunts ever successfully performed in the history of man-kind by the bravest and most daring of men. Or perhaps,

individuals missing a chromosome or two, with too much time on their hands. We’ll leave that up to you. One must ask themselves however, if the tables were turned, would you have the “marbles” to set out to conquer any one of these death-defying, hair-standing, jaw-dropping feats?

#6 Evel Knievel – Motorcycle Daredevil

Known all over the world and famous for his crashes as much as he was for his audacious stunts, Knievel was a daredevil God during the 1960s and 70s. Initially, he performed stunts on his motorcycle to support his family, but it wasn’t long before he began performing stunts in front of the whole world. Knievel was relatively known among the esoteric during the 60s but it was his jump at Caesars Palace, well…more the crash-landing at Caesars Palace in 1967 that made

him a star. He went on to perform jumps around the world and break bones in nearly every stunt; legs, feet, hips, back, concussion – all sustained until 1976 when Knievel practiced for his outrageous shark jump. Inspired by the film Jaws, Knievel planned to jump a tank full of live sharks. However, during one of his rehearsals he crashed into a cameraman and broke both arms. Worse was suffered by the cameraman though who lost an eye. So distraught was Knievel, he retired from performing again.
