There is no doubt that people have all kinds of ques- tions about heaven and what it will be like. In todays gospel that issue is touched upon when Jesus is asked a very specific question about heaven. The key to understanding this incident is to realise that the Sadducees, who put the question to Jesus, do not believe in an afterlife at all. They represent a small branch of Judaism that was dominated by the Temple priests. Unlike the Pharisees they rejected the idea of an afterlife and the resurrection of the dead. So they think that by posing the right question to Jesus they can show that these are foolish ideas. Jesus, in answering them, does not tell us anything about heaven as such, he simply shows that their rea- soning is false because they have too narrow an idea of God. For the early church, faith in the resurrection of Jesus was the cornerstone of all their preaching and it was this that allowed a message of indestructible hope to reach many whose lives were filled with despair. As we move towards the end of the liturgical year, the readings invite us to think about the end. This is not an invitation to worry or be perplexed about what we dont know — it is rather an invitation to hope and have confi- dence in Gods will for us. Thinking about heaven requires more than simply trans- ferring what goes on down here to some heavenly sphere. Heaven is about union with God, life in its full- ness, so whatever idea we have of it, it will still come up short. There is no doubt that people have all kinds of ques-tions about heaven and what it will be like. In today’s gospel that issue is touched upon when Jesus is asked a very specific question about heaven.

Jesus, in answering them, does not tell us anything about heaven as such, he simply shows that their rea-soning is false because they have too narrow an idea of God.

For the early church, faith in the resurrection of Jesus was the cornerstone of all their preaching and it was this that allowed a message of indestructible hope to reach many whose lives were filled with despair.

As we move towards the end of the liturgical year, the readings invite us to think about the end. This is not an invitation to worry or be perplexed about what we don’t know — it is rather an invitation to hope and have confi-dence in God’s will for us.

Thinking about heaven requires more than simply trans-ferring what goes on down here to some heavenly sphere. Heaven is about union with God, life in its full-ness, so whatever idea we have of it, it will still come up short.

THE JOY OF KNOWING GOD’S WORD:

there will be an opportunity to tease out the message of the Scripture Readings of the next Sunday's Mass in a

friendly, safe atmosphere.

Every Thursday morning. We will meet in St Patrick's church after 10am Mass.

SCRIPTURE READING

Each week we suggest a piece of Scripture to use in your prayer. Light a candle and read slowly the passage,

re-read it a couple of times and reflect on it and listen to what God is saying to you.

This week’s is Luke 21:15— 19

GAYBO REST IN PEACE: Archbishop Eamon Martin de-scribed Gay Byrne as a gifted and ground-breaking broadcaster who will be remem-bered and quoted for generations.

Social issues and current affairs were grist to the mill of both programmes, at a time when there were few alter-natives to RTÉ television and radio, with the result that Byrne was often the first to air public discussions about issues that challenged Catholic teaching. Nevertheless, Byrne identified himself as a Catholic and carried a Ro-sary ring upon his person.

President Michael D Higgins described him as a man of great charisma. “Gay Byrne was someone who exuded warmth and presence, who was possessed of effortless wit, charm and who had a flair for broadcasting,” he said. “This was combined with an innate gentleness as a person, professionalism and humour.

“Through his work in radio and on television he chal-lenged Irish society, and shone a light not only on the bright but also the dark sides of Irish life. In doing so, he became one of the most familiar and distinctive voices of our times, helping shape our conscience, our self-image, and our idea of who we might be. Beyond com-passion, which he had in abundance, he had a sense of what was just.

WELCOME THE STRANGER: As protests con-tinue about locat-ing asylum seek-ers in a former hotel on Achill Island, the Arch-bishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary, has is-

sued a statement saying Ireland has a moral obligation to welcome the less fortunate into our country.

Dr Neary said. “As Christians we are morally obliged to welcome the stranger and, in the context of our im-proved circumstances, we have a responsibility to share with those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

We should also be particularly alert to those who are experiencing serious upheaval and a crisis of hope in their lives. “Critically, we also have a moral obligation to serve the common good by preventing the exploitation of sensitive situations concerning vulnerable people by those who trade in hatred and fear.”

The archbishop said that most Irish families know about emigration and the “fear and trepidation” that accompa-ny it. “Let our faith, and our own lived-experience, be a model of generosity to others,” he said.

One factor that may have led to disquiet among locals is that many were taken by surprise by the Department of Justice plans for the Achill Head Hotel. Dr Neary said: “It is important that effective advance planning be un-

dertaken by the State including a full and transparent consultation with local people.

Such preparations should go some way to allay fears and misunderstandings while, at the same time, ena-bling this important human-centered initiative to work sustainably for the whole community.”

CONNECTING THE SACRED & SCIENTIFIC: A Portarlington-based priest who was ordained in 2014 following the death of his wife has launched a new website which he hopes will help others suffering the pain of the loss of a loved one. Fr Sean Hyland is a priest of the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin.

His new online resource is linked to his book ‘Whisperings of My Soul’ which was published in 2018 and was a number one best seller in Veritas stores around Ireland and continues to be one of their best-selling books. His inspirational story also tells of his grief after losing his beloved wife as well as his children and the messages from heaven he received in consola-tion.

Fr Sean believes that most people form a worldview in their teens or early twenties. After that, people resist any challenge to their worldview. He says a worldview of atheism, a belief that God does not exist, can be es-tablished very early in a person’s life. He also believes there is no disconnect between science and faith. In fact, the more that people learn about science, the more it should strengthen their faith.

The idea of the website is to have a resource that will engage young people while they are still curious and still open to discussion and have an appetite for knowledge.

“We need to provide young people with the irrefutable evidence for Intelligent Design in the universe. I want to show them that it’s a very small step from Intelligent De-sign to a Divine Creator and that’s how the idea of the website came about.www.whisperingsofmysoul.com will be launched on 6 November.

VOLUNTEER VINCENT'S NEWTOWN-MOUNTKENNEDY SHOP: Volunteers are welcome to work in Vincent's Newtownmountkennedy shop. Vincent’s charity shops are a very important as-pect of the service SVP provides.
