St. Roch Parish Bulletin Page 2
Dear people of God,
As we are closer to the advent and end of the ordinary season, the church
encourages us her beloved children to be steadfast and ready without being
discouraged or distracted until the Lord comes. Indeed, “the waiting game” is not
an easy one but it requires lots of patience, humility and most importantly lots
of wisdom. If we must succeed in this waiting game for the Lord, we must learn that
patience is the greater courage while wisdom is the greatest of it all.
Today therefore, we must ask God to grant us wisdom to know what to
do at all times especially when we tend to run out of the spiritual oil (patience, courage, hope, faith and so on)
necessary for waiting for the Lord to act in our lives. This is most especially, when it does appear to us that
Jesus is delaying too much to come to our rescue.
Saint Matthew’s Gospel of this week gives an eye-opening message by the story of the wise and the foolish.
The wise come prepared and the foolish do not think ahead. We are invited to reflect on this story and gain
wisdom from it. At least part of the wisdom to be gained is that we can die at any moment and we should be ready
to meet the Lord right now if this is when He calls us. Probably it is not going to happen right now, but it could.
This Gospel is not trying to scare us, but simply reminding us that this life is not all that there is. There is another life, and it is for that life that we live this life. God wants us freely to choose Him and that is why He has
created us. Let us open the eyes of faith and live like the wise virgins in the gospel. My prayers. Be safe and healthy.
God bless you all.

December 15-23 Annual Simbang Gabi Mass
This annual Filipino tradition of 9 nights of Mass makes this our biggest
celebration of the year.
Christmas Mass Schedule
December 24—6:00pm (St Roch) & Midnight Mass (St Roch)
December 25—Christmas Morning Mass at St Roch 8:00am & 10:30am
Limited seats. Please make your advance reservations.
Simbang Gabi is just around the corner and once again, St Roch will celebrate this traditional event this
year. Simbang Gabi is a Filipino Christmas tradition which includes a series of nine Masses on the day
leading to Christmas. It will begin on December 15 through December 23, ending with a midnight Mass on
Christmas Eve, December 24.
This tradition began by the Spanish Friars to allow farmers to hear Mass before going to the fields early
in the morning. Simbang Gabi is also known by its popular name “Misa de Gallo” or Mass for the Rooster.
Over the years, changes were made to the way this event was celebrated, mostly to accommodate the needs
of the parishes.
Simbang Gabi is not just a tradition that needs to be celebrated itself but is also the spiritual preparation for Christmas and
commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. This celebration is also seen as a way of requesting blessings from the Lord, as most
people believe that if one completes the series of nine Masses before Christmas, their request will come true.
Simbang Gabi is also recognized by some parishes in the Honolulu Diocese and the Catholic Filipino communities around
the world. No matter how and when this celebration takes place, Simbang Gabi provides a strong indication of the depth of
Catholicism among the Filipino people. St Roch Church is proud to continue this tradition in Kahuku and allow the strongly
influenced Filipino community to participate in this celebration. This year, our Filipino Catholic Club Chapter will be handling
this event. Please stay posted for more information on how you can help.
Thank you to everyone who participated in our
All Soul’s Day events. There were three
Masses, celebrated on Monday, November 2
each with a unique activity to honor our
deceased loved ones. After the homily at each
Mass, participants added names to the memory
tree, placed candles at the altar and the reading
of our deceased loved ones names. At the 12
noon Mass at St Joachim, a special blessing
was made by Father Sebastian at the church’s gravesite.
Volunteers added flowers to each grave. After the 7:00pm Mass at
St Roch, a special lantern ceremony was made at the Grotto. Both
memory tree and candles will be on display through the month of
November and candles may be picked up after this period. We
will announced when lanterns can be picked up. If you would like
to add the names of your loved deceased family members to the
parish’s book of the dead, please submit their names to the Parish
Office. Thank you to all the coordinators and donors who made
this event memorable and fulfilling for everyone.
Attention CCD Parents
Effective next week, in person CCD Classes will
resume . The younger children will meet after the
7:30am Mass while the older children meet after the
9:30am Mass. More details will be sent to parents
and all safety precautions will be established.
Congratulations to Esther Crawford
as our new Extraordinary Ministry
Coordinator. She has been highly
recommended for this position. She
replaces Mary Jean Lindsey, a long time
parishioner who served many years. We
wish Mary Jean our best wishes to her and Ohana.
