How many times did we hear our parents say, “If you can’t do the job right, don’t bother doing it at all!” This applies especially to the way we live. If we love life – live it to the fullest! If we love people, we should love them completely as they are, and not in “bits and pieces”. We are all children of God! If we believe in our children, we should be “all-in”, with no reservations. If friends mean a lot to us, we should cherish them as treasures and work to deepen our relationships. 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 8, 2015 Readings: 1 Kgs 17:10-16; Heb 9:24-28; Mk 12:38-44

Most teachers recognize it by the second week of classes. Experienced coaches

can spot it after just a few practices - the serious students and those who are

half-hearted about education; the serious athletes, and those who just want the

glory of being on the team. Half-heartedness is all too often a commonplace

attitude. It makes for a terrible waste of talent, dead-end careers, poor

relationships, loss of morale and zest for life. Half-hearted people disappoint

and even annoy us.

This was a particular problem for Jesus. He warned His followers that God

prefers us hot or cold and that He, Jesus, becomes nauseated when we’re

lukewarm. Entering the kingdom required full-hearted conversion to a new

way of life. There would be no compromise between God and “controlling”

material wealth.

In today’s reading from 1 Kings and the Gospel, we hear about two women; full

-hearted women, giving of all they had. Jesus commented on the poor widow

with admiration, not for the money donated, but for her attitude of soul.

Happiness goes hand-in-hand with “full-heartedness”. If we want to be happy,

“Give it all you’ve got.” “Wishy-washy” efforts in anything we do rob us of

energy and effectiveness. How many times did we hear our parents say, “If you

can’t do the job right, don’t bother doing it at all!”

This applies especially to the way we live. If we love life – live it to the fullest! If

we love people, we should love them completely as they are, and not in “bits and

pieces”. We are all children of God! If we believe in our children, we should be

“all-in”, with no reservations. If friends mean a lot to us, we should cherish

them as treasures and work to deepen our relationships.

If we’re really going to follow Jesus as his disciples then it’s up to us to develop

more profoundly our personal relationship with Jesus. There’s no looking

back!

Peace,

Deacon John

The Liturgy Team

The second part of the renewal of Liturgy and the Liturgy Team at St. Paul Catholic Newman Center continues this Monday as we encourage conversations with ministry leaders and members discerning the “style and content” of each ministry, as well as the necessary response and preparation for members who are called to one specific liturgical ministry or another.

This Monday, the Eucharistic Ministers and Ministers of Proclamation will meet at 7:00 p.m. in the worship space.

All who are involved with either of the two above Ministries are required to attend. Also, those who recently attended the meeting on the Ministry of Hospitality are strongly encouraged to attend.

Preparations for the new Liturgical Year and Advent are well underway. Your attendance at this meeting will guarantee that all who come to worship with us will feel welcome, invited, and encouraged.

Dear Newman Center friends: I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of the Newman Center staff for the past seventeen years (as Director of High School Ministries 1998-2002 and Director of Campus Ministry 2002-2015). I have been blessed with amazing students, worked with dedicated volunteers, and come to know so many of you as friends, mentors, and faith family! In mid-November, I will be leaving my position at the Newman Center to work as an admissions advisor at a vocational school in Fresno. I look forward to the new experience, but I will definitely miss all of you and hope to keep in touch (my personal email is [email protected]). Please keep me in your prayers as I take this next step on my journey! -Karena (Karey) Spach

Month of All Souls During November, we pray especially for our Faithful Departed. Here at St. Paul’s, we have a memorial book in the rear of the Chapel, our “Book of the Living”, to enter the names of those who have died during the past year or departed loved ones whose names are not in that book from previous years. At each and every Mass all year long, the Eucharistic Prayer contains a Remembrance of the Dead.

Also, we have tables in the rear of the chapel during November to put small photos of the deceased whom we keep in loving memory and prayer.

May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

Peace & Justice Part of our mission as a Peace & Justice committee is to assist in educating & informing the parish of service opportunities.

One of the many challenges Fresno faces is that of poverty. Blessed Mother Teresa has these wise words on the subject of poverty: "To know the problem intellectually is not to understand it. It is not by reading, taking a walk in the slums, admiring and regretting that we come to understand it and to discover what it has of bad and good. We have to dive into it, live it, share it."

We all have an opportunity to do just that in our Newman Center neighborhood. Consider joining Circles, an ecumenical ministry at Wesley Methodist down the street from us. Learn more at circlesusa.org or call Wesley

224-1947.

Food Recovery Program Serving Newman Neighbors Newman Center volunteers are continuing to serve a healthy hot meal to hungry and food insecure people who live around the Newman Center every Friday. Each week more than 50 people attend, many of them children. The families enjoy food that would have otherwise gone to waste, but it is instead “recovered” by students in the Fresno State Food Recovery Network. We are always looking for Newman Center volunteers who are willing to commit to working one Friday a month setting up, preparing food, serving and cleaning up. If you are interested in joining this rewarding program, please email [email protected].
