David McNaughton of Killin and hymns were sung to music provided by the RAF Kinloss Voluntary Band. Ministers from Callander and Balquhidder also took part, as did Padre Ian Greenhalgh, Station Chaplain RAF Marham. The last issue, for example, cost about 75p per copy! Although it was slightly larger than usual, it merely illustrates the recent trends. The production costs have risen by more than 60% and in spile of the great support of our advertisers we are currently running at a loss. StrathfillanCommunity Council

By-Election

II has been decided by Stirling DistrictCouncil Community Services Departmentin consultation with community councilsto postpone Community CouncilElections from May 1995 until October1996. However, Strathfillan CommunityCouncil decided at its meeting on7 December 1994 by a majority of fourvotes to two that they would prefer tohold an Election to enhance theircredibility with the community.Accordingly, a By-Election has now beenarranged for 27 June 1995 and thetimetable is summarised below:-

Last Dale for Lodging Nominations 29May. Last Dale for Withdrawal ofNominations 5 June, Polling Day (ifrequired) 27 June, Inaugural Meeting tobe advised.

Community Council Elections aredifferent from those for Local Councillorsor MPs in that an Election only takesplace if the number of nominationsexceeds the maximum number ofCouncillors defined in the Constitution.

In Strathfillan this maximum number is14 and there were only seven nominationsfor the May 1993 Elections, theremainder of our Councillors having beenco-opted. Many people are doubtfulabout the credibility of a communitycouncil which has been appointed withoutthe need for an Election. However, others consider that providing an Electionand the opportunity for nominations havebeen well publicised then the councilappointed, without an Election, is just asvalid. Effectively those people who wishto serve the community are given thatopportunity. In order to promote thisElection on 27 June 1995 we havedecided to print a special By-Election

issue of the "By the Way" newsletter. Our wish is that the Strathfillancommunity will lake an active interestin this Election and ensure that thenumber of nominations exceeds 14, thusnecessitating an Election and assuring thecredibility of the new council.

Killin VillageEnhancement Project

At present Stirling District Council'sPlanning Department are consultingresidents and proprietors of homes andshops adjacent to the Breadalbane Parkentrance. This process will assist inensuring that revised environmentalimprovements for this area have the fullsupport of the community. We will knowby 11 May 1995 the outcome of thisproject's bid for European funding underthe European Regional DevelopmentFund. Once this information is availablewe will know what resources can bedeployed. Negotiations are continuingfor the purchase of the ground beside theCapercaillie restaurant. This site has beendesignated as the preferred site for a newcar park for the Village. The RuralStirling Partnership will endeavour to talkto the various Coach Tour operators whovisit Killin to establish what wouldencourage them to stay longer andthereby allow their passengers access tomore of the villagers amenities. Thiswill be done prior to any final decisionon coach parking to ensure that all parlieshave been adequately consulted. Onceall these threads have been pulledtogether it should be possible to hold thenext meeting of the Killin VillageEnhancement Group to discuss the nextmoves.

Salmon FishingDispute Settled

Owners of salmon rights on Loch Tayhave been in dispute with the TayDistrict Salmon Fisheries Board.Briefly the storm on the Loch has beenover the number of rods a singlefisherman with a salmon right mightuse to troll for salmon. Traditionallyon Loch Tay a single rightholder orsomeone with the rightholder'spermission could fish with three rods.Recently a policy of one rod only wasbeing promulgated by the Board. After intense pressure from salmonright holders, pointing out theprovenance of rights, preceding the1951 Salmon Scotland Act, the Boardaccording to a report in the Courierof 25 April 1995, has accepted thatsalmon right holders on Loch Tay maycontinue to fish with three rods, butno more than three per boat.

This ruling means that revenue fromrenting out salmon rights will not belost. Anglers would be loath to renta right which would allow only onerod to the individual fisherman. TheBoard, according to the Courier, wishes to commend proprietors andanglers who have in the past restrictedand will continue to restrict the totalnumber of rods used in their boats toa maximum of three.

It is unfortunate that the Board didnot discuss the matter with the WestLoch Tay Salmon Fishers Associationbefore attempting to put policy intoaction or indeed give notice to salmonright holders, many of whom wereharassed by the Bailiffs employed bythe Board.

We should like to draw your attentionto the letter on page 13 from fouryoungsters in the Village.

It seems to us that they have come upwith the germ of a good idea.

It is certainly true that there isn't a lotfor young teenagers to do in theVillage, particularly in the evening.Of course there are certain activitieson certain evenings, badminton, Boys'Brigade, even floodlit footballtraining, but the youth club idea whichthey are presenting is different and ifit were a reality, it would attract awide group of youngsters and as theold fashioned saying goes "keep themoff the streets ".

What these youngsters now need issome kind of response to their letter.

Of course a Youth Club, completewith premises, pool table, arcadegames and music, costs money andperhaps quite a lot. But in a Villagewhich has seen over the past few yearsa good part of a million pounds spent,or about to be spent, on facilities fortourists and visitors, surely its timesomething was done for the Villageyoungsters.

Who's going to respond to their plea? The Community Council? StirlingDistrict Council Leisure & RecreationDepartment? Forth Valley Enterprise?

Come on somebody, make a start! And it's not just money we need; it'salso people who are willing to becomeinvolved in such an enterprise.

Killin Drama Club

This year again Killin Drama Clubprovided us with a feast of variedentertainment with three one-act Plays.

The evening started off with theyoungsters performing the WaitingRoom. While a good performance, itwas disappointing that some of theyoung actors could not be clearlyheard by the audience. There are somepromising young people in this group

and perhaps with a firmer guidinghand, they could excel.

It was good to see some new facesjoining the "oldies" to tackle an AlanAyckbourn play "BetweenMouthfuls", which is a difficult playboth to produce and act. "In a Spin"by Richard Hodge told the tale of anunlikely robbery and was wellhandled by an experienced cast.

I hear talk of a new lighting system, and a Pantomime, which, if true, would give the Club a great boost.

A bad Winter for the SheepWhen asked to write a bit about the effect of the Winter on sheep, we had justhad three very wet months with over 30 inches of rain since 1 January. Cold, wet weather over a long period is just about the worst a sheep has to stand.

In cold, dry weather the fleece provides excellent insulation so the sheep needsless energy to keep herself warm. She therefore has more chance of givingbirth to and rearing a healthy lamb.

In wet weather the sheep uses all her energy trying to keep warm. It is alsoharder to get a dry place to lie and the ground becomes very soft, making itharder for her to get about.

The sheep give birth at the end of April until mid-May. The six weeks priorto this are the most important.

Fortunately, this year, although the sheep were lean at the beginning of April,it has been a better month with little rain or hard frost.

If the weather behaves for the next few weeks a reasonable lambing is hopedfor.

As far as Chernobyl is concerned, another farm was released from the schemein January. Levels continue to fall, but testing will probably continue for a fewmore years yet.

This is a plea for more members to comeforward and help us to keep the Clubgoing. Although the Club is stillmanaging to function and meet itscommitments and pay the Summer staff, the fall off in membership means thatthere is less revenue for the Club.

Since our inception, some three yearsago, we have not increased themembership or our prices for use of thefacilities. However, our costs continueto rise and although money is tight thesedays, a full adult membership of £25 isless than 50p a week. Children could hegiven a membership of £12 as a presentfor a birthday or suchlike. Membershipentitles members full use of the facilitiesat no extra cost for the full year April toMarch.

The committee are always looking atways to expand or enhance the facilityand any suggestions are very welcome, from members and non members alike. There is one way a lot of you do help usand that is buying the weekly tote ticketswhich have been a great source ofrevenue for the Club, in fact, if it werenot for the tote, the very existence of theClub itself would be in doubt.

We are determined to keep the Clubgoing, as at the moment the facilities arecomparable with any. So if you feel thatyou require a healthy outdoor pursuit, please consider us for a membership, ageis no barrier. We have tennis, bowling, football, five a sides and basketball. Ifyou don't feel a membership is for you, keep buying the tote tickets. As well ashelping us keep going, you never know, you might be lucky like Rachel andPeem.

End of an EraWith the retiral of George and Paddy after 47 years, Smith's Joinery firm closed, thelast of four including the Breadalbane Estate Joinery that once flourished in Killin.Fred Smith took over the business in 1942 from Ronnie Fraser. When George andPaddy started in their present premises the machinery was worked by two millwheels, water driven. Electricity was put in in the 1950s. George started hisapprenticeship at 10/- a week working on the wooden clinker built Estate and Hotelfishing boats.

The firm saw social changes, worked and made the last cart wheel and produced thelast working mill wheel for Edramucky and provided shuttering for the Hydro Electricschemes formative buildings. At one time employing eight people, work took thefirm to Glen Etive and Blackmount for estate projects. George remembers carrying

materials up to the Lawers/Ben Ghlassite hut for repair work. As well askeeping the books since 1947 Paddylooked after customers DIY needs, supplying nails, screws etc.

Although the business has closed, joinerywork is being undertaken by John Sinclairwho worked with the Smiths for 32 years.

We wish George and Paddy a happyretirement. George's wife Anne, now

recovered from recent illness, iscontinuing with her plant nursery.

No doubt Paddy will be able to give moretime to her many interests and Georgemore time to his golf!

WeatherNot since the glorious April of 1984 hasthe lambing period passed without atleast one disastrous day and night ofcold, downpour, gale and highlyunpleasant conditions. Although Aprilwas a month of contrasts with periodsof cold north east winds, on the wholethe weather was reasonably dry, which, coupled with warmer interludes, alsodry overhead, was a boon to the newborn lamb which stands a much betterchance of survival when dry, thoughcold, than when conditions perhapssome degrees less cold are wet andstormy and where wind chill andexposure arc detrimental to survival.

March 1995 contained what was perhapsthe worst of the winter's weather. Thearrivals of spring migrants was more orless on cue. Although a notable absencein recent years is that of skeins of geesflying north over Ardtalnaig, this maymean that for some reason these birdsare taking perhaps a more easterly routeon their journey from the Solway,Morecambe Bay and other winter-waysto their nesting grounds in the Tundra'sof Spitzbergen, Novaya Zembla and soon.

Centenary of Killin Masonic Lodge

The 100th Anniversary

A milestone was reached this year with the Killin Lodge, Breadalbane St FillansNo 815, celebrating 100 years since it's establishment in the Village.

The members had been making plans for this occasion for some time and thelast few weeks of hectic preparations culminated with the Centenary Meetingon Saturday 25 March in the McLaren Hall. There was a large attendance ofLodge Members and representatives from the Lodges in the Province, supportedby friends of the Brethren from as far afield as Nottingham and Huddersfield.

The RWM Brother William L Stitt welcomed the assembled Brethren into theLodge on this special day and hoped they would all enjoy (he proceedings. Thedeputation from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Perthshire West headed byBrother David H Cramb DPGM was then admitted and welcomed. TheDeputation from the Grand Lodge of Scotland headed by Brother (he RightHonourable The Lord Burton MWGMM was received in due form and welcomedby Brother Stitt on behalf of the Lodge members.

The impressive ceremonial of re-dedication was then carried out by (he GrandMaster Mason of Scotland Brother The Lord Burton and the Office Bearers ofGrand Lodge.

The Centenary Dinner followed at the Killin Hotel when the traditional Toastswere honoured.

Across the Years

The Lodge has always been supportedby a wide cross section of thecommunity and its records, which arecomplete, are full of local familynames from Lawers to Tyndrum andGlen Lyon to Balquhidder. There areentries which mark members leavingthe area from overseas; Canada,America, South Africa, New Zealand,Australia, India and Spain and to otherparts of the UK.

it is also fact that visitors to our cornerof Perthshire who had stayed for afew years joined the Lodge and thereis mention in later Minutes that theycontinued their Masonic interest backin their home locality.

From the early days the Members haveassisted in supporting localorganisations and have been presentat fund raising events, the first of thesebeing a concert in the Drill Hall, nowKillin Crafts and associated premises,in aid of local charities. Today theLodge plays its part in carrying onthe example set by our founders.

The present Lodge Members trust thatthey carry the hopes and aims of ourfounders with pride and it is our prayerthat caring Masons will still bemeeting into the millennium and forall time to come, in the Lodge Roomat Manse Brae.

Incidentally among the differentmeeting places over the years, onecannot be accurately located, namelythe Killin Armoury, where there wasa meeting in March 1906; anythoughts on this would be appreciated.

Killin and Breadalbane Angling ClubThe trout angling club was foundedin 1881 by permission of the Earl ofBreadalbane who agreed to incorporatehis name in the club name. Therehave been many notable members:-Peter Ross, a local shopkeeper, developed a trout fly which still bearshis name, as does the corner of theisland in the confluence of the Lochayand the Dochart. Danny Campbell, local newsagent for many years fishedfor Scotland many times, as indeeddid Willie Allan, his successor at thenewsagents. Mr Kynoch, theoriginator of the Kynoch Killer andthe Split Kynoch, lived at Tir Artairwithin quite recent memory.

The Centenary Dinner was held in1981, when 100 people celebrated 100years of club life. The Guest ofhonour was Alistair Nicholl, Secretaryof the Scottish National AnglingSociety and an international angler. In 1984 the local team progressed tothe semi-finals of the Benson andHedges National Competition at

Alex Stewart and Willie Allan

Graffham Water, but failed to reachthe final. The team comprised WillieAllan, John Elders, George More, JimSimpson, the late Jim Christie andTony Weaver. In 1981, early in themorning, two poachers were arrestedwith two salmon under the bridge onthe Dochart. No owner could befound to take out an injunction. Oninvestigation by Douglas Allan andTony Weaver, it was found that, despite denials by Breadalbane's

Solicitors, Countess Breadalbane stillowned the Salmon Right for the waterbetween the old mill and the bridge. This Right was purchased by the clubfor use by members who arepermanent residents of the village.

Engineering success story for Killin firm

Gordon and Steve

Next time you're going along theMain Street keep your eyes peeled forthe sign which reads "A & B Services,Scotland".

No, it's not just another touristenterprise! It is in fact, the locationof a highly successful engineeringbusiness run by Gordon Aitken andhis partner Steve Bennett.

Their business, which is concernedwith adapting, improving andmarketing very advanced forestrymachinery, has grown over the pasttwo years to the point where it isexporting to Wales, Ireland, and otherparts of the UK.

The photograph shows one of theirspecialised machines - the ABSLonghaul Skyline, which caused quitea sensation at an Association ofProfessional Foresters Show inSeptember 1994 and gained them

many orders. A & B are also agentsfor Tapio Harvester Heads fromFinland, which they have now fittedto excavators, so that this "high tec"piece of equipment is more easily usedin the forest. Add to that, they arealso dealers for the Canadian FirmOregon, which specialises in HarvesterProducts.

In fact, so successful has this latterdealership been, that they earned (fourof them) a prize of a trip to the factory

in Canada and four days "conferring"in the Caribbean sunshine! Not badfor two lads from Loch Tay! Forthat's where it started. Both Gordonand Steve learned their trade at GRSmiths of Acharn. That companysubsequently went bankrupt, soGordon and Steve got together to formA & B Forestry and AgriculturalServices, now a highly successfulenterprise. All quiet at theGreen Team?

Gel your ear plugs out! Regular GreenTeam meetings in the school gardenstarted again on the 27 April, and willtake place on alternate Thursdaysthroughout the Summer months.

Several meetings took place over theWinter, when we were able to use theformer shop a! Lynedoch (orHorwoods). The room is quite bareat the moment but members havebrightened it up by decorating it withsome of their artwork. In January,we all made 'green' resolutions so thatwe could all try and be moreenvironmentally friendly. Let's hopewe stick to them!

Last Autumn, the Team had collectedhazel nuts and some other seeds, which were planted during the Winter. The seedlings which grow from thesewill be planted by the children nearthe Lawers Burn to provide food forthe red squirrels living there. At themoment no young trees are growingup in the wood because of grazing.

The Green Team have an excitingprogramme of events lined up for theSummer including some bat detection, navigation, practising their observationand much more. We are also hopingto be able to take some of the groupto Killiecrankie, to learn about thewildlife there and see grey-hairedSteve! New members are welcome, just come along to the next meeting(ask Mrs Frost when it is) and we canalways use extra adult helpers.

Dear Sir

Alan McKenzie, Drew Wright, StevenGrant and myself (Graham Grant) havethought of an idea for 10-18 year olds. Some of the younger age group get intotrouble at night because there is nothingto do.

What we had in mind was a games roomfor us to play pool, arcade games andlisten to music. If we had to, we couldraise money somehow to pay for theequipment. We hope to try and get a lotmore kids and adults interested in thisidea. We would have to think of a placeand then ask permission. We could evenmake up a petition to see who is for andwho is against this idea.

Yours faithfullyAlan McKenzie, Drew Wright, Steven

Mervyn Brown who has farmedon Loch Tayside for the past 45 years, gave a talk that ranged over the changesin that time. A picture of farm life thatsaw the demise of the horse -mechanisation of farming. The Lochsidewith a two day a week bus service!

The general information combined withMervyn's interest in conservation, wildlife and, of course, the weather, provideda thoroughly enjoyable evening.

BB Car Treasure Hunt

On 9 April, 13 cars set out from theMcLaren Hall to solve the clues, theseincluded two entries from the KillinNews Team. The route was roundGlen Lochay, up past the Golf Course, back through the Village for a walkabout the Dochart Bridge, then to theHall via Lyon Road, for a well earnedcup of coffee and supper.

This was the second venture in thisform of fund raising and Alex Stewartdevised some fiendish clues in anattempt to fox the participants. Theseincluded historical, the obvious, atleast to him and Latin names forcommon birds to translate to English. It is my duty to report that the NewsTeams were no match for KayRiddell's car full of brains, who werethe overall winners, with the Webbfamily coming second after twotie-breaks.

The consolation prize went to CharlieGrant and family and the most originalanswer going to Richard Shand's teamwhose answer to the clue "By thesound of this, females are excludedfrom inspection" was a "a field oframs" when the correct answer was"a manhole cover".

The compiler has, under protest, agreed to easier clues if asked tocompose another hunt and the BoysBrigade benefited to the sum of £66from the evening with grateful thanksto everyone.

The next event will be the Car BootSale in the Park on 29 July. We hopeto see you there.

Thank YouFiona's Wedding

My niece Fiona was married inSt Fillans Church on Saturday29 April.

We had planned for a small weddingwith no more that 60 guests. Manymore were invited but it was assumedthat the overseas guests were unlikelyto come. We were wrong, over 100people replied saying they werecoming. We wondered if Killin couldcope with such an invasion. We nowknow they can and the Village gavethem a big welcome. We had awonderful day, perfect weather andguests were completely won over bythe Killin people and the superbsurroundings. Thank you to the manyguest house owners, hoteliers and shopkeepers who welcomed them andwhetted their appetite for more. Theywill be back.
